Besides reading reviews of anime titles at ANN, which other websites do you read reviews on?

For example, this website has a large collection of comprehensive reviews.

www.everythinganime.com is pretty good, even if it's kind of small.

I'd guess those who are Polish would care, but maybe that's just me. Wink

On the other hand, I'm surprised nobody mentioned Animeondvd yet. But I also frequent Animenfo as well... having multiple people review the series does help to get a more balanced view. My biggest problem with the people who score the series higher/lower than they normally would because they feel the averaged score doesn't fit their point of view. I'd love to come up with a tool that scans for that kind of trash and delete those reviews. Maybe a reporting tool that would request a review be read if it felt it was out of place.

I would like it if animenfo would adopt the IMDB voting system. Just a simple 1-10 scale for the people who don't want to go through the trouble of writing a review, and just add in a review system for those who feel like writing one.

http://anidb.ath.cx/perl-bin/animedb.pl? is a good one as well imho which actually has adopted most of the IMDB voting system :p but is unknown to most people. I guess this helps =)

I mostly use AOD. But I usually will ask someone at one of the local stores that carries anime what a good series is.

http://www.animejump.com

Great website with hundreds of anime reviews. The webmaster for this site says he draws more inspiration from people like Roger Ebert than other, specifically anime reviewers. The reviews are polished, but it still has a fanzine type atmosphere.

Also, http://www.jascii.net

The writing style of this site is a little fanboy-ish at times, but it is a very good source of information on new anime in Japan. In addition to reviews, they have plenty of screenshots. This site is a good guide if you aren't sure which fansubs you want to get.

I'll take http://www.animeondvd.com for $400, Alex. That's my secondary review site, after ANN.

I am surprised no one mentioned http://www.themanime.org/. They have one of the most comprehensive review lists around.

Got to second that. I find that Chris' and my opinions on anime are pretty similar, for the most part. I've rarely disagreed with him to a large extent.

Except on Abenobashi... we disagreed on that one pretty strongly...

"As for ANN, the only problem I have is that the reviews sound a little biased sometimes (trashing seiyuu or dub performances in a somewhat harsh manner, but then again, it's hard to NOT be biased because I am too)."

OK, this I take serious issue with.

If I rip apart a dub performance, it isn't because I'm 'biased', it's because I thought the acting was bad. Bias means that certain studios or actors ALWAYS get good reviews regardless of the quality of their product. I don't do that. Some studios put out better product than others on average, but in general, everyone's turned out a stellar dub at this point.

I don't go easy on anything. If something sucks, I'll say so. I don't feel obligated to 'be nice' and not liking something does not mean I'm biased. In fact, I'm extremely forgiving when it comes to dubs. Most of my reviews give middling-to-positive notices on dubs, with some of them being flat-out raves.

Also, I don't think I've ever criticized the Japanese performances unless the voices were extremely grating or annoying. I'm not an expert in the Japanese language and therefore am not qualified to judge the acting. For the English versions, though, I've taken many, many, many classes on the art of acting (not being an actor myself, but being very familiar with the tenets of good acting), almost obsessively view and analyze both film and theater, and therefore I feel very qualified to judge the performance quality, so I do.

Unless you want to further clarify this statement, please make sure you really know what you're saying before you say it.

-Zac
