Without spoiling anything, I'll say the manga goes in some unexpected directions right around the time the last season of the anime ends off at. I'm talking like, actual plot progression, on a level that the story hadn't really seen up to that point. I'm not sure how the anime-only crowd is gonna react to that.

Well they were already doing that in the last season wiith the graduation talk. Then they thought it would be funny to leave us dry for 5+ years
