Dang it, I had that pre-order for the Earth Dancer Edition! I have a lot to say on this and other related stuff, but it goes against ANN rules. Stay safe everyone.

GSC is not the only company in this space that has halted shipments, but is likely the most prominent.

It is one million percent a stupid idea to accept a shipment when you don't know how much it's going to cost. The knock-on effect to this lack of incoming product is that store shelves are going to be drying up soon again.

Seeing Good Smile halt shipments and preorders along with several other Japanese companies has me feeling that nerds are being targeted right now.

I'm so bummed about the Earth Dancer edition, I haven't got a special edition in so long and this one looked so cool ;___:

I'm really hoping Good Smile Shop announces a delay in shipments to the US. Stopping pre-orders really makes no sense since they're a year out, current pre-orders are the real problem. I have a Pop Up Parade Falin Chimera figure pre-ordered for $206.99 that's due in May (probably the end of the month) that will end up costing me $500+ after shipping under the current tantrum rate. Hopefully there's either another delay, the $800 exception is reinstated or China becomes part of the 10% base rate.

I'd recommend people use sites like Amiami as my shipments from them have remained uninterrupted. I just got a payment request yesterday for a few model kits I pre-ordered.

This won't necessarily help for orders that include items made in China. Even if AmiAmi marks the country of origin as Japan on the customs forms, there's always a risk that your package will be opened for inspection, and you'll be on the hook for tariffs (as stated above, de minimis has been suspended for Chinese items).

It's a gamble for sure, but as long as the de minimis exemption stays in affect for Japan it seems unlikely they'd look if the value of the content is relatively low on the individual items. AmiAmi does indeed mark everything with a Japanese origin on the customs form so there's that, but two things we need to keep in mind is that the Japanese tariff rate was initially 24% before nearly everyone was reset to 10%, and de minimis is expected to be eliminated everywhere over time, they're just starting with China and Hong Kong.

At least you'll actually get your stuff. I'd rather pay a few bucks more if they do ding you for a tariff than not get something at all because a company decided to halt all shipping.

We know who to blame, it’s too bad a lot of Americans don’t understand what tariffs are

Well said. Sadly, this mess will only be the beginning for what's to come.

Agreed. I had one preorder from 2024 wind up being $20 more because it arrived just after the de minimus exemption was removed. A different one is stuck in a wait-and-see situation while the company tries to do something other than just pass the cost along.

Personally, it has affected my own shopping. I have ordered quite a bit of Hololive merch over the years, and now they have a specific disclaimer about sales to the US with the shipping costing a lot more. What makes me even more hesitant is that most of their sales are an on-demand system with a limited window followed by months before fulfillment. We've seen how much can change within days, let alone months. Necessities have gone from "stock up when there is a sale" to "stock up before it gets worse."

Retailers, in general, have been trying to get goods in while they can, but there is only so much that can be done there, and even if tariffs were lifted, it's not like supply would immediately restock.

I've yet to experience this, thankfully. I'm aware sometimes people talk about customs charging them a tax in the past but I have also never had to pay those in my life so I'm unsure what those circumstances are. Personally I don't mind if I have to end up paying a $10 or $20 dollars fee to get my items.

It looks so cool, I hope they sell the materials like the art book separately if they can!
