God, I love Another Code so freaking much. I played the original DS game long ago and, thanks to the new remake, I was able to experience the sequel. It was simple and not so long, but absolutely emotional and fantastic. I'm going to be picking up Dear me on release for sure.
The rotoscoped faces in the animation look straight out of anime Aku no Hana, though. Is there any staff overlap between the two? |

I'm confused about Shou's career. If you watched the first Mortal Kombat, you could tell one of the reasons he fits the character besides the hear, it's how he built he is as he performed most of his stunts until hurting himself while recording the fight against Reptile. I never understood why he disappeared from Hollywood until Street Fighter but I heard that it could be related to his culture as it appears he had to take a more peaceful job.

I'm surprised to see someone actually liked that redesign. Wayforward is usually good with designing hot female characters but that one was a miss. No idea why it was such a radical departure especially when none of the other Double Dragon characters were all that different. Always felt like it would have been better if they used that design for an OC rather than an established character fans would be upset about. |

I Love Double Dragon! It was new to arcades the year I graduated high school in…GASP 1987! I have most of the gams in the series except vs Battletoads, as I never cared for them. I might buy the new game.

I had to double check eventhough I already knew the answer but reading this I thought “didn’t they just announce the Marvel fighting game like a month ago”? Like damn
I’ll say I’m over here wondering why Chun-Li is in this if this is supposed to be an adaptation of 1. Even more so with Gen like Ryu, Ken, & Sagat being apart of original cast |

I encourage them to Not Buy Anything This is why I hate gamers. They complain and complai and complain but they still buy. The only reason prices are rising is because people keep buying. Make all the polite comments you want, if you give them your money they win. And they will keep raising prices. |

I don't know, but thanks for putting this bug in my ear; if I ever get a chance, I'll ask
Best I can gather, he just decided to step away from the spotlight to focus on his wife and kids. More power to him, some folks just prefer the quiet life. I respect that.
Gonna be honest; as much as I like old games, I'm not quite old enough to have been active in gaming roundabouts Double Dragon's heyday. So a lot of the series passed me by. I respect it for how formative and important it was to the development of beat-'em-ups--and eventually fighting games. But somewhere around the constant "re-inventions" of the game, they've just never figured out how to keep the series' spirit alive for younger people the way WayForward managed with River City Girls. I'm hoping this one at least finds an audience, it's a shame that such an esteemed franchise is on the rocks.
I'm gonna be honest, I forgot that Chun Li wasn't in the original Street Fighter cast (Birdie was, though! Everyone remembers Birdie, right?). But on the other hand, Chun Li is such a core part of the series that it'd be weird if they didn't include her. She's by far one of the most beloved characters in the entire franchise, if not the foremost woman in fighting games, period, paving the path for Sonya Blade, Mai Shiranui, Pai Chan and others. And the original Street Fighter is so overshadowed by the sequel that I don't think most people even know she was never in the original game. It's kinda like how Zorro originally used a pistol in his original serialized stories--most people don't know that, and they probably prefer he sticks with his iconic rapier instead.
There's a reason I underline being polite when you voice your criticism, and it's because there's already too much vitriol out there, man. There's no room for nuance online, and that nuance is important because without it, you get people running around parroting the lie that Switch 2 games cost $90 or that "you don't really own the console." Not to mention: being loud only guarantees that you get blocked. You're not sending your criticism to John Nintendo, you're spamming the mentions of some underpaid intern manning the Twitter page. I'm sure spamming "DROP THE PRICE" in Twitch chat was cathartic, but that didn't achieve much, did it? I think back to Pokémon fans raising a ruckus about "Dexit" and how all that achieved was confirming that you really, really don't want to listen to anyone who deigns it necessary to say what they "really" think about Pokémon, because all you're gonna hear is sound and fury signifying nothing. And that just ain't an attitude to have about freaking games, man. This is supposed to be a hobby. This is supposed to be fun. If you're not having fun, you need to reevaluate what you're here for and what you want out of stuff. The moment you frame your relationship with a thing as adversarial, you're setting yourself up for a bad time. If fifteen people drop into my mentions in all-caps, I'm not gonna give them the time of day. If one person drops into my mentions, is polite, actually uses punctuation and is speaking in good faith, I'll actually listen. And that goes for a lot of people. I dunno, go burn a trash can if you really want, I guess, but so long as I have a platform I'll use it to encourage people to remember there's another person on the other side of the screen, and they're likely having just as bad a day as you are. |

- ArcSys: I admit, I'm not that much into ArcSys compared to other Japanese fighting game developers like Capcom, Namco or SNK, I've only played Dragon Ball FighterZ with some of my friends, but I do know that they make and publish other types of games, I can understand why some were disappointed with the presentation, I think the problem with many companies doing Direct-type presentations is that they see it as an opportunity to give the spotlight to some lesser known titles, but kind of tricking people into thinking they'll show something bigger. Still, it was nice seeing a new Bubble Bobble and Double Dragon, and at there was something Switch 2 related outside of a Nintendo presentation;
- Street Fighter: honestly, I don't have very high expectations for a new SF live-action movie, while there tons of great martial arts movies, I believe SF is better suited to animation, as a kid I watched the 1994 live-action movie, but I much preferred the anime movie. By the way, I know these news are recent, that's probably why they weren't featured in this week's column, but man, the things happening at Xbox are not looking good at all, with all of the layoffs, and the fact that Rare's project, Everwild, has been cancelled as well as the new Perfect Dark reboot. Honestly, I had my doubts when they announced both games a few years ago, especially Perfect Dark, since they described it as a AAAA game, but I hoped that both projects would see the light of day. |

It's less because they're recent and more because it revolves entirely around Western studios. But for the record, Microsoft's business practices suck: they've done everyone said they'd do in the lead-up to the Activision-Blizzard acquisition, and they're responsible for laying off more people in this week alone than Nintendo currently employs in their entirety. And that's before you get into tragedies like Everwild's cancellation (they'd been working on that for almost a decade!), or even John-freaking-Romero--an industry legend--having his studio shuttered by no fault of his own or his studio's efforts. But also, this is a conscious decision on my behalf because there's only so much I can say about these massive lay-offs. I can only talk about how devastating this is for the industry and the people that work in it so many times. Especially when I called this shot years ago. I can only dedicate so much energy on bad news before it starts affecting my day-to-day efforts. "It's just taking Nintendo a long time to see their future exists off of their own hardware," my ass. I hope you all understand when I say that I don't want to have to beleaguer the discussion on Microsoft much longer. |

Koudelka came out in 2000? Huh. For whatever reason, I tend to think of it as more of a 90s game.
Still, always glad to see that one remembered -- especially now with even Shadow Hearts fading from our collective cultural memory. These were all incredibly unique RPGs, from the genre's golden era, and it's a shame so little of that era has been preserved for the future. All four games would obviously be edit greatly from a remaster or remake, but I feel like... and maybe this is a bizarre comparison to make... I feel like Koudelka is a lot like the original OG Resident Evil games, in that it could really transform into something much more compelling to modern audiences with a slick remake that reimagines the story as a a bit more grounded and realistic. Like imagine how cool it would be to see Koudelka brought to life with the care and detail of the RE4 remake. |

I'm not burning or encouraging anything like that. Spamming drop the price is precicely the thing I dislike. I'm saying being polite wont change anything, the only thing that changes things is not buying. Gaming is a hobby that's supposed to be fun, but it's becoming increasingly expensive. Everyone agreed that the prices for new nintendo games were insane, and yet they buy. Or rather, the people who can afford it buy. I imagine there's a lot of kids who would have loved to play mario cart but their parents can't afford it so they'll have to settle with watching streamers play it. Basically my point is the people raising prices do not care about how polite you are or how good your argument is, they only care about money, so if people (like me) don't want games to be so expensive you can buy max 1 per year, then not buying is the only option. The 3DS didn't sell as good as nintendo hoped and the prices went down an insane amount. |

My older brother still has his copy of Koudelka. The only reason he has it was because he used to work at Gamestation in the early 2000s (we're UK) and bought it off someone looking to sell it, and the only reason he bought it was because he heard it was related to Shadow Hearts, which he also happened to pick up before. Though he's never opened up the case and played it haha.
I never got the chance to play it myself but watched let's play vids of it, and for its time, the story and acting was incredible for the most part. This scene in particular's a favourite of mine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ns10hzKYgYo&t=1s It's a shame that Kikuta didn't get to realise his vision for Koudelka as a survival horror game and that his resignation meant he couldn't follow up on the series personally. But at the same time, if that didn't happen, Shadow Hearts might not have existed, or at least not in the way that it did and Shadow Hearts is a series that's made a longlasting impression on me. I thank my older bro for introducing me to that series, and no other RPG since has filled that niche like Shadow Hearts provided for me. I'm praying for Penny Blood to find a publisher and reach the funding it needs, it's the closest thing to a new Shadow Hearts we're going to get.
Probably because Koudelka came out in Japan in 1999 and was released overseas in 2000. |
