First off, I like to congratulate Babymetal to become the 1st Japanese act to be on the top 10 on Billboard 200 chart. Something that no other J-pop/J-music wasn't able to do. So far, only K-pop were able to break into the top 10 on Billboard 200 charts for the last few years.

For people wondering why and how come despite anime and manga visible mainstream popularity in the US, Japanese music hasn't replicate the same success like their K-pop/Korean counterpart did. Well, it's a multifactor reason why that happened, but I can discuss on another topic or unless you want me to explain it later.

But anyway, Japanese music can be a hit or a miss amongst anime fanbase (even in the US).

I would like to see more anime/manga-based musical being done on Broadway and West End if they can adapt it. But even then, I'm not sure if they can reach the same level of success like on the level Hamilton, or Wicked. Even musical based on DC and Marvel (yes, we do have them if you aren't aware of this like we have one for Superman, and one for Spider-man, and I believe one for Captain America) are either a hit or miss too.

It's pretty clear to me that the (K-)anime song of the summer is "Golden" from K-Pop Demon Hunters.

I was literally coming in here to ask if the KPDH references were on cooldown after the film got a whole column.

Also IIRC the punchline of the beef-less stroganoff song was the dish ended up being bad and they got a bad score, but all I know it from is the memes.

I'm slowly watching my way through Healer Girl, which is probably one of the most musical anime I've seen (I did start Red Garden years ago but haven't finished it. Gotta get back to it). I highly recommend Healer Girl because characters will just launch into songs about random stuff and it's good fun.
I'm not a big musical fan but I really want to watch a musical anime that has all the campy nonsense of a musical, with stupid random songs and stuff. Healer Girl does that well so far.
I remember the start of Love Live S2 had that vibe with Honoka's song and everyone joining in. I really wanted a Love Live series that was more of that....

Maybe it's not musical theater but I've only seen one anime this summer with a musical sequence featuring a former Megadeth artist in multiple languages and that's Dan Da Dan.

e: just got around to watching this week's episode last night and yeah, there's a whole classical music fight. Which reminds me of the "William Hell Overture" from season 1.

I thought that giraffe shot was from Apocalypse Hotel for a minute because I can see the Ginza Wako department store in the background, the same building that became the Gingarou Hotel in the Apocalypse Hotel anime.

If I think of "anime" and "summer", two theme songs from Kimagure Orange Road come to mind, most obviously the first OP "Night of Summer Side" since "summer" is in the title but "Orange Mystery", the second OP, has more of an intense summer vibe to it.

A summer anime song that usually jumps in my head is Summer Rain from "Cross Game." Partially because I'm very literal-minded and it has the word summer in it, but also because the vibes and anime it's attached to just feel like summer to me.

Marty Friedman has also appeared with Revo in Luxendarc Kikou, the oratorio(?) based on the soundtrack of Bravely Default: https://youtu.be/ZDrp0k-11lM?t=2026
