I wanted to like this so much more than I actually did. But besides some aspects already mentioned in the review, one of my issues was that these heists weren't so much about the three sisters doing something particularly smart, but more about Toshio and the entire police squad being completely useless idiots. And that gets old pretty quickly.

Considering the series has clearly been updated to modern tech, I do kinda wonder how close to the original this is. And maybe better give the original a shot indeed?

All in all not a total waste, but it does feel like a missed opportunity.

It's all just kinda... average. I agree with the review that the heists have very little weight behind them. I don't mind certain things like Toshio conveniently temporarily not being able to see. In fact, I find those situations rather charming and fun. But yeah, gotta be honest, Hitomi gets pissy way too quick at Toshio. Yeah, he's an idiot, I get that, but he never ever means any harm and it's beyond me why Hitomi doesn't get it at this point (they've known each other for years now). Again, I get it, it's supposed to be comedic, but it falls flat for me.

Art is good and the animation is fine enough, but the CGI reminded me of the CGI bike chase from Detective Conan movie 7, which is infamous... from 2003. It looks that bad to me. The music is nice and I would like to ge tmy hands on Yuki Hayashi's OST, but I gotta be honest, I don't care much for Ado's music. She's good at what she does but it doesn't excite me. Still, it's cool she covered Anri's original song.

Personally, I'm not a fan of the modern setting and the use of internet, smartphones, etc. I get why they do it, but ironically it disconnects me from the show much more. Perhaps that's just because I have seen the 80's anime.

Overall, it's just a fine show that's mildly entertaining. I will finish it, but the 80's anime was far more charming to me. It has the same issues when it comes to Hitomi and Toshio, sure, but it had much, much more going for it besides that (including episodes focussing on Ai and Rui!). I feel modern anime just doesn't do episodic stories very well, but that's a whole other subject.

Anyways, that was well written review!

Having watched all six episodes, this almost feels more like a "best of" compilation than a proper adaptation of the source material, and I say that as someone who hasn't seen the original series or manga.

The relationships are very basic and they seem to focus more on forced drama than the actual heist aspect of the show. I also feel like they haven't really gone into why Cat's Eye is perpetuating theses heists, outside of the paintings having a connection to their father.

I'll watch the next batch of episodes when they drop, but I'm pretty underwhelmed for something I was looking forward to before the series started.

I am a big fan of this and City Hunter, but boy did this turn out to be "meh" I watched the first ep and lost interest. I could just watch the original. If you're going to remake something...remake it. You could keep the basic story idea intact and make it more coherent. Missed opportunity.

It's tough to watch the series if you're not invested in the HitomixToshio relationship because that's kind of the emotional core of the story, though I don't think the remake did the best job conveying it. If you take episode 1 as a standalone it really feels like Hitomi is only dating Toshio to use him for their heists but then come episode 3 they establish they're high school sweethearts and their relationship had nothing to do with Cat's Eye needing a police informant, it just evolved into that whether Hitomi liked it or not. And then the relationship kind of falls by the wayside until they adapt one of the most popular Hitomi and Toshio chapters in episode 6.

At least Ai got a spotlight a in episode 3.

I appreciate that they're doing their best to properly modernize everything and adapt the sisters' thieving and how the police operate to the 2020's, even if in the process it highlights how this is the kind of series where you're supposed to often leave logic at the door and just enjoy beautiful women in skintight catsuits pulling off heists and embroiled in romance drama.

I think the show does suffer a bit from feeling like they have to speedrun everything to fit a one-cour anime versus the amount of episodes the original anime had. I mean, they fit in three different heists in episode 1 which in the original anime would've been their own individual episodes. So it makes it somewhat harder to really get a feel for the vibe and the characters to an extent because of the pacing.

That being said, while the animation isn't amazing or flashy, I do appreciate how they managed to capture the cast and their designs in modern animation and the redesigns for the Kisugi Sisters' catsuits are on-point. I haven't checked out the dub but the new JP cast is amazingly on-point, especially Mikako Komatsu as Hitomi and Ami Koshimizu as Rui.

It's kind of Hitomi's character that she runs hot and is the sister to most likely fly off the handle, especially when it comes to Toshio.

It's been disappointing to me it seems like Cat's Eye has never quite got the same recognition among broader anime fandom like City Hunter because in many ways I think the premise of Cat's Eye is more interesting and this reboot deserved better. Anyway you can watch the original show free on the official TMS YouTube channel.

At least, I can tell you that it is known in South/Latin America and Europe. Not at the height of City Hunter', but Cat's Eye has some fans.

I think it's at least semi-popular if only because it had that crossover with Lupin III and now this remake.

Well, I can at least be glad of this remake for finally getting me to read the manga (that, and the new omnibus release). I jumped ship on the anime after that first episode, but I'm enjoying the manga a fair bit.

As for the status in the fandom, I dunno... for the most part it feels like the shounen action genre is so ubiquitous that anything outside of that is "niche". Cat's Eye, at least, is one of those series that gets referenced a lot, so I think most people who are deep into anime will at least be aware of it.

And I'm not sure how accessible it's really been in English until relatively recently, which would necessarily prevent it from being more widely-known.
