It's a sequel, not a reboot.

Three episodes in, I stand by my initial thought, namely that this is a Sentai ran though a James Gunn style filter, but they get the style rather than being a surface level take on it. It’s got an equal balance of cynicism and idealism in its veins, showing that while you don’t always get the ideal group, you can get a group of clashing personalities to work towards a greater goal, while not shying away from the fact that this approach has problems. It even has the mic drops you’d see in one of his films or shows.

Knowing this is a split cour I really hope they dub it between cours.

Takeshi Kusao's easily recognizable voice, which most people might know as Trunks, gave away the mysterious man's identity, lol. Hope we see more of him.

I'm loving what I see so far, especially how they're managing to establish more personality and backgrounds to the main characters right away, something the original series was lacking - as far as I remember it, it turned mostly into a "Ryo and friends" show. Even if there are clear Sentai archetypes at play here: the outsider Red and the Blue who can't accept him, the wise Green,.the dumb but hella strong Yellow, etc., they're done well so far. The head writer wrote a fan favorite tokusatsu (Kamen Rider Build), so perhaps he was the right person for the job.

spoiler[I hadn't seen the old show in a long time, so I didn't recognize his voice, but the first thing I did after seeing him better in this episode was look up Ryou's seiyuu...lol]

I was surprised to find out how much I really enjoyed the premier, since sentai isn't normally my cup of tea. One thing I have to chuckle at is just how heavily both the OP and ED lean into that classic Heroic Walk Cycle™ (dunno if it has an actual trope name, but you know what I mean). But it's a trope that always looks cool, and never seems to get old, so I'm happy to watch them go forth, again and again and again and... Laughing

The first episode is strong, the next two have been more typical "building up a team who doesn't get along" stuff. I'm still on board to see where this goes, though.

Watching the original at the same time has been interesting (I saw Ronin Warriors on Toonami, now I'm seeing it subbed). It has some great visuals and animation for TV anime of its time, not to mention very good armor designs, all the way down to the grunts. Which does make it kind of a bummer this new one is full of ugly boring CGI zombie things instead. I'm also really not sure how I feel about the newly added music aspect (yes, we get it, the original is from the 80s...)

Good to know ahead of time it has two cours, so I hope it takes full advantage of having some room for a modern show.

I heard the new series is gory apparently? Funny since the original show was incredibly tame.

I should also add that Katsuki Masako, who voiced Kayura in the OG series, also cameo'd as Kaito's grandma.

This has brought speculation from JPN fans wondering if Kayura herself will (or won't) appear in the sequel since they've already used up her VA...

I am not sure... I feel that the series has a huge tonal mismatch, in one scene we have children being murdered on camera and in the next one we have early 2000s Bleach stiled slapstick/screaming humor.

I have no problems with continuing watching, but it's certainly uncomfortable, I cannot take serious a series that wants to be gritty and 2000s screamy at the same time.

Besides, I personally cannot stand this type of "IT'S FUNNY BECAUSE I AM SCREAMING" type of humor.

Yeah, some of the humor feels out of place and extinguishes some of the sincerity.

I was jazzed seeing/hearing Ryo Sanada in the latest episode, though. That, and "Linda Linda" by the Blue Hearts (though covered here).

after ronin warriors, i highly doubt that sunrise will even want this sequel to be given an english dub. otherwise, the anime would have gotten a simuldub broadcast along with sentenced to be a hero

the original Troopers also got themselves stuck in there after being mobilized against it five years ago. It's neat enough as a tease for old fans who might be curious about seeing their faves before this is all over, but it's also notable as being virtually identical to a key plot point from 2019's soft-rebooted Sakura Wars game!

I remember in Shin Sakura the spoiler[OG cast went missing after using a ritual that trapped both themselves and the massive demon horde they were fighting in a pocket dimension; iirc this was badly received by the JPN fanbase who considered this move as technically killing off the OG cast (I think some dialogue mentioned their self sacrifice, which added to the displeasure of the fanbase among other aspects of the game).]

In New Samurai Troopers the dialogue has only kept it to the OG Troopers missing in action.

Rather disappointed in Crappyroll for not translating “Samurai Hearts” on screen. This song is licensed in the US so there’s no reason for it not to be done.

I also don’t like Nasti’s new voice. If this is truly meant to be a sequel then why not try to keep the same or similar tone?

Where is the Ancient One? If it’s not still Kayura then who else can it be? Or is there no longer an Ancient One due to her death and never having children?

Additional thoughts:

Where the hell is Jun?! He clearly would want to be a part of all this, especially with Nasti (or Naste, however it’s actually spelled) being there.

Will the white armor make an appearance soon? Or have they not figured out how to make a replica version of it using the bracelets?

What did Ryo do to the other four original members?

Sequels should always explain these things early on!!
