why did cartoon network take off Trigun to show more Lupin III reruns?

Probably they ran out of airings of it and/or didn't want it to get stale

Cartoon Network tends to swap out their anime from time to time so as to avoid programs becoming stale. They'll let Trigun run a few times, then swap it out for Lupin III, then swap Lupin III out for, say, Blue Gender after a couple runs.
This way they get more "mileage" out of their shows. If Trigun were a permanent fixture, people would complain about lack of variety and Adult Swim would have less places to put new shows when they arise. |

A little late for that, I might say.  Of course, the way they do their rotations is very advantageous for them. One new show(in most instances) gives them a couple months for one run alone, as well as increase their number of permutations and combinations of the existing shows. And with several new shows coming, it vastly increases variety as they portray it.
