Telepathy Girl Ran
I'm only planning to pick up one new show for the summer season, and it looks like it might be this one. Although TGR (or TSR = "Telepathy Shojo Ran" if you prefer) seems aimed at the same target audience as typical magical girl series (i.e. preteen and early teen girls), it has none of the typical magical girl brightness, cuteness, or sense of magic and wonder. Instead its first two episodes have been a rather dark and serious look at Ran, a first-year middle-school girl whose potent mental powers are gradually awakening, and a bitter, cynical classmate whose powers have already awakened and who seems determined to provoke Ran into fully realizing hers, too; one gets the sense that this other girl is generally unhappy with being a "monster" (despite being probably the prettiest girl in class) and wants Ran to share in the misery. Also, someone in a mask is going around manipulating animals into attacking people and setting up deadly situations for as-yet unknown reasons, giving the series something of a mystery feel as well. The production values are decent, and it's been well-written so far. It's also one of the rare shows where the heroine has a completely intact (if rather odd) family at home. With two episodes already out, I think it shows a lot of promise for those who can tolerate how youthfully it skews. |

It's a bit cheesy at times and the sudden psychic battle in the middle of the classroom wasn't quite what I was expecting, but so far its pretty good. Definitely one of the better shows of the season (of what I've seen so far).

Just like in the Spring I'm starting an awful lot of the Summer shows and this is definitely one on my list. I was actually waiting to know more about it before I watched it as well as getting some other things out of the way, currently on disc 6 of Get Backers and first episodes of a bunch of other shows that were a bit higher on my list and still looking out for a sub for Ultra Violet Code 044, which is my top priority of the summer shows.
But I think Key's post just helped bump this show a bit higher on my list. It definitely sounds like it's worth checking out and I'll probably watch it after I get through at least one more disc of Get Backers, if I don't get hooked on the next story arc. Thanks for the great info, Key. |

I watched the first episode of Telepathy Girl Ran yesterday and I agree; it does show some promise. It has that old school charm that I like. I expected it to be more cutesy, but it was suprisingly down-to-earth (and a bit mysterious). Ran is a likable protagonist and her rival also seems like an intriguing character. Emiri Kato and Kana Ueda are very good as both of them. I especially liked that hint of madness Kana Ueda put in Ran's rival (who's name is escaping me at the moment...)'s voice. I'll definitely keep watching.

From the first two episodes, this series has been a pleasant surprise. Like Key stated, the writing has been pretty good thus far, and I really like the art style and character designs, although the animation, while good, could certainly use some work. Out of the few new series I've seen so far, it's certainly the best of the lot. I'll certainly be sticking with this one.

I dunno...something about it made watching the 1st two eps a real slog.
Maybe it is just once again the 'mysterious power and the plot thickens...' Something about it gave me vague hints of Kurau, but without the emotional bond. The unappealing character designs didn't help, they try something that breaks the mould, likely in an attempt to make it look different from your generic romanticloliharemmoespinelessfest series but to me they just went with bad designs. |

Really? I actually rather like the designs. It has a more realistic look and feel to it than most anime series.
Episode 3 is now out, and it affirms that I was correct in my decision to keep watching this one. It completes the series' apparent foundation arc in a predictable but still fairly satisfying way and has some worthwhile (if also retread) things to say along the way. And although I say "predictable," the identity of the masked figure may still be a big surprise. That, I didn't see coming. Last edited by Key on Sun Jul 13, 2008 2:46 pm; edited 1 time in total |

It's something about the heads, they just don't look...'right' to me.

I agree, I was just about blindsided by that revelation. As for the designs, Midori reminds me a little of Natsuki from My-HiME. Not that it's a bad thing. Natsuki's design was one of my favorites from that series after all. |

Wow, I really enjoyed episode 4. Lots of funny moments, plus it set up the next plot arc quite nicely. The sequence in which Midori spoiler[fell head over hells for Ran's brother Rin] left me with a big smile on my face. Never would have guessed that she could be so infinitely adorable. Although, I probably should have seen it coming. She did say this after all: spoiler["If I'm not cute, then there's not a single girl in the world who is."]

This show totally has me in it's clutches, unlike any other show this season.
The simplistic character designs against the detailed (Sometimes messy, though) backgrounds create a beautiful atmosphere. Overall, it feels like a kid's show, but I don't mind, because it has an almost slice-of-life feel to it, and the storyline is rather well-written (Sometimes a little over-the-top), too. The relationships between the characters are great, too, it doesn't seem to introduce characters just to ignore them later on, which happens far too often. (And sometimes, even I got the wordplays. At times like this, I feel it would be great to be able to speak Japanese. Ah, well.) This show sure is no masterpiece (yet?), but it totally grew on me within 3 episodes. |

This series already had me hooked, but that scene, more than any other, thoroughly endears this series to me. It just came out of the blue, and spoiler[Rin is not exactly an epitome of the masculine or classic bishonen look]. And I noticed how quick you changed your avatar to reflect that scene. . . |
