What's with the hate of the Kanon dub? People think Brittney Karbowski killed Ayu's "Uguu!" catchphrase. I disagree. This being one of the few anime I've seen both the subbed and dubbed version, I like Chris Patton's sarcasm of Yuichi and prefer Jessica Boone as Nayuki to the Japanese seiyuu. Not too surprisingly, the fact that is dubbed in English will cause the personalities to change from the original. Is this just another one of those cases of the dub vs. sub debate? I think this is one of the cases where the dub surpasses the original. But I'll leave it at that. (note, the thread title is a pun of "crushing cans").

Hmm...I haven't heard much hate of the Kanon dub, but I don't make a point of it to go to dub-bashing forums. I don't really think the personalities of the characters were changed but yeah, English voices can give a different feel to the characters. That's not neccesarily a bad thing, though.
I really like this dub and personally, I really love Brittany Karbowski's Ayu. It's different than Yui Horie's Ayu, which I like. I don't think Ms. Karbowski's performance would be as good if she was to imitate the Japanese voice. She brings a uniqueness to the character by giving her a bit of a lower voice, yet still retaining a lot of energy and spark. I also think Jessica Boone fits her role very well. Her voice for Nayuki works well with the kind, though a little passive personality of the character. I don't see much wrong with it. |

Agreed, where are all these Kanon dub-bashing comments coming from? I haven't seen them around here, and I have personally found nothing wrong with ADV's dub.

There's always people who will bash the dub of any anime work.
It's always based on personal preference, so you ask 10 people, you'll likely get 10 different answers. Personally i thought the VA's did an exceptional job, and portrayed the characters very well. I'd say some of them went above and beyond their usual standards and did an even better job for this series. I thought the flow of some of the translation was better to, and that is exceptionally rare. It's rare because while many translations might alter just a few things, the meaning isn't quite the same, or they detract from the intent. Kanon, as a series, did not suffer from this at all. In fact i'd say any "liberal" translations were done to perfection. Because of this, i dare say i think many of the Va's were really able to flow with it, and it was better because of it. Chris Patton's sarcasm of Yuichi, is a great example. Now just having to wait for V6, at least we know it's gonna come out eventually. |

I usually watch my DVDs in Japanese (especially the ones that take place in Japan) and I've always found moe characters who use terms like uguu or nyao rather annoying. It's one of those things that bother me in either language. |

I tend to watch both. It depends on what i'm doing at the time. If i am able to sit down relax and enjoy the show I'll watch it subbed, but if im doing something where i may be distracted, I'll watch the dub, that way even if i am not directly watching i wont be missing any story line plots. How'd ya like that run on?

(I know this is a couple of weeks old, but I missed it while out of town over the 4th of July weekend.)
Honestly, I think the definition of "killed" that the haters are working under is "failed to pronounce it in exactly the same way as Yui Horie did." Which is a rather unrealistic and undesirable standard, if you ask me. If they really wanted to kill "uguu," they could've tried to write it out completely, as most older dubs would've done. (ADV's Abenobashi dub, for instance, leaves the uguu intact in a Kanon parody moment, but cuts out the ~ryun sentence tag used in the same episode.) I haven't found anything seriously wrong with the Kanon dub, either. It's perfectly faithful and very well-acted in the emotional scenes, and the slight alterations in the comedy scenes are always for the better. Some of the secondary characters were a bit off at times, but the lead performances have been great. Even Japanese fans have taken an interest in Brittney Karbowski, so she can't be that much worse than the almighty Hocchan-sama. |

A lot of it is probably the fact that the girls lose a lot of that moe cuteness in their voices that the Japanese cast has. Of course some may find their English voices a bit more realistic and a lot less annoying than those incredibly high pitched Japanese voices. Strangely their voices never bothered me any.

I like they lost the moe voices, one of the reasons I enjoyed watching the one episode that I did (I was gonna continue, but I never bothered) If they did have the moe voices, I know I wouldn't have liked it.

That's exactly why I prefer ADV's dub. I watched Kanon fansubbed and it was unable to hold my interest, I actually kinda found the whole cutesy voice/phrase thing obnoxious. I had felt the same way with Air, but when I saw how well ADV had done with Air, I gave Kanon another shot and I find it a lot more tolerable in English. |

I like Kanon better in English as well. I do believe, like most English dubs, that it kind of loses something in the translation though since we don't do those trademark chiripy high chipmuck female voices that well and instead sound like normal women. Whether you consider that a gain or a loss is up to you as a matter of opinion.

ADV seemed to have hired good casts on previous shows, but about that trailer... ugh. I watch the trailers on DVDs a fair amount to find new shows/etc. ADV has the worst trailers IMO. They make even some of the better shows sound more corny than I think they are.

Bandai has the best trailers in my opinion. I like anime trailers that actually give you an idea about what the series is about rather than just making a vid of the opening sequence and calling it a trailer like a few companies do.
For instance the Infinite Ryvius Trailer is a good example of trailer done right in my opinion. Also uses some great music tracks from the series. |
