I don't want to get into any arguments so I'll just take for granted that the Japanese version is "better" than the English TV dub, but, still, whether or not you enjoy the version you see on television on its own merits is probably still a 99% accurate indicator as to whether or not you will enjoy the Japanese version, and, if you don't care for musclebound aliens in battles which last for several episodes at a time in English, it won't be your bag in Japanese either, even if the Japanese version has a few elements which aren't "kosher" on American kiddy TV for whatever reason.
EDIT: And before anyone brings it up... blah blah blah music blah blah missing or rearranged episodes yadda yadda yadda trying to appeal to a younger audience blah blah blah Gen Fukunaga and Bruce Faulconer. (Don't care. Don't care. Don't care. Don't care.)

Not for me, I can't stand Goku's japanese voice. They should have droped Masako Nozawa with Dragonball, the hero of the universe shouldn't sound like a shrill school girl.

Since it is used to hearing the voice of Nozawa since a child's time, it has not been felt such.

I prefer the original Japanese version. But, yes Goku’s voice can get a little irritating.

And those are being re-released, too.

Just to point out, the original Japanese music isn't that good to begin with. I'd say it's really no better than Faulconer's.

DBZ was popular, what, 10 years ago?
I've seen DBZ in it's raw form, and while I don't favor it anymore than the dubbed version, the only thing that irritated me were Goku's and Adult Gohan's voices. It really is amusing listening to these muscle-bound guys sound like little girls. *lol* Other than that, it's all a matter of opinion whether you prefer it dubbed or subbed. I don't think you need any of our opinions to justify that.

I agree, usually you'd think that the Japanese version would be better than the dubbed, but Goku does sound like a Japanese 6th grader.

Unless your the hugest DBZ fan, then yes it's worth it, other then that, it's not worth it. I could barely stand it in English, yet alone Japanese.

Gonna have to disagree with you there, senpai.
I couldn't and still can't stand the crap they play now. I'd much prefer Shinsuke Kikuchi's score. Classical (sort of) vs. heavy metal, hard rock, techno, and synthesizer (crap, that's totally unfitting, not to mention the terrible voice actors.)
No thanks, I'll take the trumpets and kettle drums over the electric guitars.
Heck, I'm so nit-picky, I even play Budokai on mute with the Japanese OST playing on my computer. Ah well, that's just me though.
Of course to answer the question of wheter I prefer English or Japanese is pretty obvious. I used to be a big fan, but I don't really care anymore. If all of it were like the first 3 movies, then I'd say go for dub. But of course it's not. So do whatever you want ... I won't stop you.

Well, if you have any doubts at all, I don't recommend investing in this 300 episode anime. I personally recommend the superior manga instead which has much less filler and costs less too. Not sure if Viz ever finished translating them, but if you're Japanese is pretty good or if you just like staring at the pictures, the recent Japan rerelease is pretty cool w/ color inserts and more. :)

The Japanese version of DBZ is much better than the English version, yes. And I would go so far as to say that Masako Nozawa's voice is much better for Goku than Sean Schemmel's, too. Just personal preference, but her voice fit so well with his character. I can't imagine anyone else pulling off that character as well as she did (and the English dub has done nothing to invalidate my opinion there).
However, I'll agree with what Tenchi said: if you don't like the show when you see it dubbed in English, chances are extremely good that you won't like it when you see it in Japanese. It's essentially the same show in either language, it's just better in Japanese; but since it is basically the same, there's no reason to think your opinion will change.

For your viewing pleasure, the American DVDs past season 3 are bilingual. The American version, no matter how "inferior", is a good indicator of the original version. the dialgue relatively similar, and you get the same footage on the uncut English tracks. In otherwords, there isn't much difference between the two except the obvious ones. And yes FUNi is attepting to redo Seasons 1 and 2.

What does this have to do with being able to enjoy the show for what it is? I watch episodes of Seinfeld in syndication a few times a week. The one from last night was aired in 1991. That's 13 years ago. I laughed my ass off.
Same concept.
Whether you like a show or not has nothing to with its age; you just have to give it a chance.
As an old-school DBZ fan, I will say that yes, I personally believe that the show is infinitely better when viewed in its original Japanese. Over the years, though, I've come to accept the dub for what it is, and have come to grips with the situation. Both the dub and the original can be enjoyed. It mostly has to do with which you saw first, and if you're coming into it with any pre-conceptions. That's not to say I like the dub (in fact, I'd much rather NOT watch it...), but I can fully understand why some people would like / dislike it.
If DragonBall was crap, why did it last for over a decade? Utter crap doesn't last that long, no matter how "cool" some fans might think it is (*cough, Hellsing, cough*... *smirk*).
Give it a chance, and you might find yourself pleasantly surprised, getting to love a cast of characters that you can literally grow up with.
