I used to be a schoolteacher about 2 years ago. A lot of the kids enjoy anime and manga (as I do). These were kids that were around the eighth grade. I have 3 grandchildren (mercy me, they better not be on this forum), who love anime and manga. They do not know I like it at all. I keep all of my anime away from them so they won't know. If they ever find out, I will give them my anime and manga I own. You may think a lady at my age (72) would be a real wierdo to be on a forum about anime and even an old lady who owns anime titles, (Yu Yu Hakusho, Rurouni Kenshin, Maho Tsukai Tai, almost everything else). You all are probably thinking, "Yeah Right!" But you're wrong. Anime is not a nerd thing by the way. It never has been.

i live in La, and a few yrs back when i was in high school, that was ur anime fan a "nerd" however as anime gets more exposure to its richness in quality of story, action, and drama, etc as it did over the past few yrs, that sterotype is slowly shedding away.

a friend of mine who lives in another part of cali mentions to me that being into anime is an insiginia of coolness, so people over at his neighborhood dont mind in expressing their opinions and news of various types of anime series'.

It's nerdy. It's animated stuff. Stand up to be counted and be proud of it. Smile

So do you hide it from them so as not to have to part with your collection Very Happy , or for some other reason. I don't think it's weird for you to be on the boards or have anime at all. The love of anime knows no bounds when it comes to age.

I guess you could call it a life-style, but as I pointed out earlier there are many types of anime fans. I should write a "field guide" detailing all these different types that I have observed over my 2 years and counting journey into Anime-Land...

I'm gonna be watching anime all my life too, but at my school, it isn't a nerd thing at all. Anime is popular than anything else at my school. Manga and anime are highly read and watched by at least everyone at my school. I enjoy it myself. The first manga I read was Naruto from a Shonen Jump manga magazine. It isn't nerdy at all, and if it is, then who cares "I'm a nerd then!" Nothing can stop me from watching anime!

No, I hide it so they will never find out that I am an anime fan. They would think it is very strange and just steal my collection and add it to theirs'. Oh well, I hope that doesn't happen.

I've known some cool people who dig anime. I'm a chill kinda guy and music and anime are two of my favorite interests. It's an art. Anime has so many appeals for different markets. There's something out there for everyone.

I've seen a chart on some website on what makes an anime nerd. It doesn't say that all anime fans are nerds only certain types. I agree with some of it.

1. People who call anime "Japanimation" (You don't call anime this just because it's from Japan. We don't call American cartoons "Americanimation". It sounds pretty stupid)

2.People who cosplay. (It actually depends on how you are cosplaying as. I'd like to look like one of the Getbackers since they're really cool. But I wouln't want to see someone looking like Goku or Vegeta in real life. It isn't just in anime. I've seen people cosplaying as one of the hobbits in LOTR, and in my mind I'm going "WTF?")

3. People who talk about anime too much. ( I admit I used to do this until I realized it annoyed people who weren't interested)

4.Pokemon fans over 8. (This one I disagree with. It should be over 13 not over 8. Back in the 6th and 7th grade, everyone in my middle school including the bullies were into pokemon)

No offense to anyone who are any of these.

That's an interesting thread: it truely shows how much the differences of culture bring differences of reactions

I live in France and anime is not considered as a weird thing in there. I'll not say it's socially accepted as a normal thing either but you'll probably never encounter persons saying that it's a 'nerd' -or even a 'geek'- thing in there, at the worst you'll meet an idiot who will consider himself smart in having fun of you because of this but it will not be difficult to make him look like the fool in the end

In fact, some animes were broadcasted towards the end of the 70s -things like 'Candy, Candy' or 'UFO Robot Grandizer' or even 'Battle of the Planets'- and they had a huge success until the middle of the 80s so the people of the TV bought a lot of license but they didn't pay a real attention to the content of them: this is how we got uncut 'Saint Seiya' or 'Hokuto No Ken' into kids shows Laughing This brought a big fuzz but at least noone could say anime was a child thing Wink

There has been some interest into anime OVAs or movies about a dozen of years ago where a few persons (like me) discovered different things than the ones broadcasted at TV when I was kid but these ones had some difficulties to impose themselves for reasons similar to the ones exposed in this thread. The shows from childhood, on the other hand, seemed to find some sort of natural way into the heart of spectators and this helped the anime genre to be accepted as a whole through years: nowaday you can find all sort of products, ancient ones like new ones, though not as much varied as in USAs, but it's better than nothing

In fact, it is very common to find people of 25 - 35 years old being into anime, even if it concerns mainly these 'old' animes broadcasted a while ago, or simply liking animes in general. We even have an itinérant show called 'Gloubi-Boulga' which features a character from an old TV kids show: he was an orange dragon named Casimir who lived into the Island of Children and had all sort of stories with his brother Hippolythe (green this one...), he also had a personnal cooking recipe called... gloubi-boulga Razz The itinérant show features Casimir and some projections of the most popular animes from this period and the majority of the spectators (thousands of them) are beetween 25 and 35 years old, some of them even come with their own kids! It's pure fun to see all this people applause the exploits of Grandizer on the big screen or dance and sing with Casimir himself (it's still the same actor under the disguize btw)

As for the ones who consider me as a nerd/geek/whatever, well, when i see what sort of shows they like (real-TV crap, cop/love never-ending series or soccer championship...) I frankly prefer being a [insert adjective of their choice here] Rolling Eyes Razz

Anime will always be a "nerdy" thing because it pushes too many limits on what many people think that a cartoon should be. That's why people of all ages enjoy Disney movies. They embody everything that society feels that a cartoon is with maybe one cuss world that makes it feel more adult(I don't know why). Throw in an anime disc with a lot of cussing and it's not a cartoon anymore to some people. Cartoons should be funny and ridiculous. They can have no deep plot with mature themes. That's what they think. They refuse to watch anything that's not the conventional cartoon with bugs bunny or play any great game that isn't hip or cool because it looks silly but is hella good (cough*Viewtiful Joe*cough) But I'm glad anime pushes the limit because if it didn't, we would be sitting around buying old Johnny Quest episodes instead of Trigun and CB
(Thinks about Johnny Quest DVD)
Damn you Hadji!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
