I have a vague recollection of an anime I saw about roughly 15 or 20 years ago and I'd really love to see it once more. I only remember these vague scenes: it starts when a people has to flee for something, they can change form thanks to a toothed little ring they place in their neck (i think). The main character stays behind for some reason. Later this boy tries to refind his people and his girl above all. He is accompanied by a little white animal that can change form. Later he meets a girl who at the end of the film appears to be a plant, goes to sit by the water and grows root at her feet. Then the little animal takes its true form and it is the girl he was looking for! Not much to go on is it?
