In fairness, all these events are contractually obligated to act like they're going to go on until they're told they can't.

That’s why I was surprised the ACen announcement came as early as it did. If this is force majeure, then it implies that Illinois has already extended its “no big indoor gatherings” mandate through May, and I have no idea if that’s actually the case.

One possibility I’m open to is that contracts are a two-way street: the convention center and hotels are probably operating with greatly reduced staff and may not be in a position to hold up their end of the deal if a con actually did manage to bring in 30,000 people. Plus, it does the convention center no good to drive the con’s parent company into bankruptcy; that just means missing out on years if not decades of steady business once the pandemic is over.
