Is it just me, or does the artwork seem different in the latest reincarnations of Shaman King released by VIZ in Shonen Jump? Maybe the mangaka had new assistants by this point?

How did you think it looked different from previous chapters? The artwork looked the same to me with its sharp-cornered characters and bold lines.

It doesn't sound like -censorship-, but instead merely redrawing a few panels. It's not that uncommon. Japanese imageboards regularly have comparison pictures of broadcast anime, and then "official" DVD releases. The same, I assume, regularly happens with respect to manga. Usually it's to correct mistakes like bad perspectives and poorly drawn characters.. There was one recently of the comparison between broadcast and DVD versions of Galaxy Angel on yotsuba; I'll see if I can find it for posting. Sometimes the differences are pretty significant. Given that this sort of correction (not "censorship"; that's an entirely different issue) occurrs between anime releases in Japan, I don't see why it wouldn't happen between Japanese manga releases AND sometimes even when the title's being released in the US.. |
