I just finished watching this anime and I haven't heard of it her so I thought I would spread the word. Its set in the present or near future. But there is one difference there are these people called Contractors. They have abilities that far surpass the normal human being. The ability to manuplate gravity, control fire, and teliport are just a few. However this ability is a 2 sided sword. After they use their powers they must do something. Think OCD. They are not too fun breaking your own fingers, throwing up, and drinking the blood of children. Twisted Evil

any more and i will give away too much of the plot. I recommend that you watch this series it is really good, although not for the faint of heart/stomach Wink

I saw this show and thought it was very entertaining, and its always fun trying to figure out what each contractor's requirement for using their abilities are. I always thought that Hei's contract to use his power was to spoiler[eat lots of bowls of noodles] but it is spoiler[shown in the last episode that he inherited his ability from his sister].

I'm still waiting to see what Funimation plans to do with the license. I'm guessing that they're trying to get either Darker than Black or Claymore onto [adult swim] before they release any DVDs.

Also, there seems to be a DVD only episode 26 that I just found about right now...

You didn't look very hard, did you?

I'm not sure what I was expecting from the bonus episode, but that wasn't it. Not to complain, it was a fun episode, just WAY less serious than most of the rest of the series. Oh, geez, fanfic writers are scary. spoiler[Elephant love]. *shudder* And was it just me that missed out on spoiler[Saitou] having a crush on spoiler[Misaki] for the entire series?

FUNimation® Entertainment Divulges Cast of Darker Than Black at New York Anime Festival 2008
Declassified Production Records Reveal Covert Casting of Popular Japanese Animated Series

As New York Anime Festival kicks off today, top ranking officials at the secretive U.S. anime house FUNimation Entertainment now admit that a cast is in place and production is in full force on the mysterious action series Darker Than Black.

Communications chief Jackie Smith says she welcomes an investigation into who revealed the identities of the talent operatives.

"We will find our leak," she said. "Our staff has extensive experience in counterespionage and handling matters involving corporate security."
Produced by studio Bones, the animation studio behind Fullmetal Alchemist, Darker Than Black is a enigmatic story about a new and deadly breed of covert agent now walking the streets. Known as "contractors", these spies and assassins wield supernatural powers to carry out the dirty work of others.

The cast, directed by Zach Bolton, features voice actors from the best of FUNimation Entertainment series including Beck, xxxHOLiC and School Rumble.

Already known by anime aficionados, veteran actors Justin Leibrecht and Brina Palencia and Bolton will be introduced to fans in their respective roles as part of this clandestine cast at the premier of the first three episodes of the series on Saturday, September 27th at the New York Anime Festival.

Jason Leibrecht gives voice to Hei – He is known by many names; BK201, Black Reaper, Li, Hei. A feared Contractor with the power to manipulate electricity, he works closely with his team under the control of a mysterious syndicate. A master of combat and infiltration, he dons a mask and overcoat when the duty of dirty work calls. Though most Contractors are emotionless, BK201occasionally shows glimpses of humanity. However, make no mistake - where the Black Reaper goes, trouble follows.

Brina Palencia brings life to Yin – A member of Hei's team, Yin is a medium known as a Doll. She assists missions with her ability to use water in a valuable way; she can transport her senses of vision and hearing from puddle to pool to faucet to lake, with mere physical contact. Stoic and somber, the little girl's past is rife with pain.
Leibrecht, Palencia and Bolton will also be signing autographs at the FUNimation booth. Please visit the booth (#504) for the session schedule.

Other cast members include:

* Kent Williams plays the role of Mao
* John Swasey is Huang
* Kate Oxley is the voice behind Misaki Kirihara of the Public Security Division
* Christopher Sabat is Yasuke Saito
* Todd Haberkorn is Yutaka Kono
* Troy Baker is M16agent November 11
* Nazia Chaudry is April
* Cherami Leigh is July
* Laura Bailey is Amber
* Chuck Huber is Nishijima

FUNimation Entertainment is set to release the first volume of Darker Than Black on DVD on November 25, 2008.

I saw the trailer for this series on the FUNimation podcast and I want to see it now. It just looks really good. Cool

It's also in widescreen...let's just hope that FUNi doesn't mess up the video.

Funimation has added a special website that you can preview the first 3 episodes of Darker than Black in ENGLISH! and the quality for online streaming is pretty good. It took me a few tries but the password was quite obvious. The password is spoiler[BK201], added spoiler tags for whose who want to try to guess themselves.

I'll probably watch later on tonight and give my impressions.

Copy and pasted from the FUNimation forums

After seeing the first episode, it seemed pretty neat. It seems to taking its time in setting up the premise. The animation of solid, but I was expecting a bit more since it's from BONES. The opening song is pretty good, IMO, but the ending song is "meh" for me. The BGM was just all right seeing as it's coming from Yoko Kanno, but I'll give it some more time.

Overall, very promising.

EDIT: Oh, and I'd like to add that the dub is pretty good. I thought that the main character was played by Kent Williams, but it turned out to be Jason Liebrecht. Never really heard of him before, but it's nice to see that FUNi is using relatively new actors for their leads. The old regulars are still fine, but I like someone new every now and then.

Yeah i'd have to agree with braves with the word he used, neat. It does seem pretty neat, kinda makes you wanan watch it. It's interesting how it's like an action yet it's subtle at the same time. But atop that, it's most certianly interesting, consisting of some of my favorite elements in anime. And again, the characters is what i find most important in an anime (below the plot lol)... and i really like them so far with those dubs. I get differnet character opinions in Dubs and Subs, it's kinda this flaw in my thinking... i don't konw why it occurs like that but it does.

But yes, the Dub is also pretty good. I'm not one to be able to point out a bad dub (except for interlude whherree eevverryonnee ttaalkked liiike thiiiis maaakiingg iimpooortaant voowels seeeem slooow aand loong). So yeah, so far it looks pretty good, i'm excited for the realease of this series onto DVD. I hope the gap in differnet releases of volumes isn't too large.
Thanks Clodus for that.

NP. Yeah the dub was pretty solid. I was pleasantly surprised with everybodys voice, even the side characters did a good job. The 4 main leads all sounded very fitting similar to the Japanese version. The only real problem I had was sometimes Kate Oxley as Misaki sounded like she had something in her nose.

Yeah, i was deifnitley suprised, and yeah the side characters were all very well Voice Acted. I was suprised, i mean ... somethin' that does bother me about the whole VA thing is if they just don't try at all or don't think the side characters Voices are as important. I can see the rational in thinking that, but like it really does make all the difference, it makes it seem more realistic, both thematically, with the plot and even with communication. So yeah i agree with you there, definitley a pleasant suprize in the Darkger than Black VA package.

Laughing Laughing Haaha, that's funny, yeah i know what you mean. That did bother me a bit, but still despite that one flaw i think the VA job is well both individually, and together sum up a pretty good package of VAs to make the show definitley one that is pleasant on the ears.

Ah. I adore this show. This is the anime that brought me back to watching anime.

Now for as stylish and badass as most of this show was, it did have its faults as many have mentioned in this thread. The ending felt rushed and much of the nuance of storytelling present throughout much of the series went out the window as they tried to jam lots of info into the last few episodes.

Now, with that in mind... ALLOW ME TO WAX POETIC:

spoiler[There were so many beautiful, understated character moments. Amber kills herself to give Hei what she believed he wanted (and then turns back time to allow him to do as he chooses) -- to live in a ~dream world~, human again with his sister and all those he loved. Instead, Hei decides to trudge on through life, continuing with the burden of his contractor abilities because although he loves and misses Pai, he learns that she is with him in a way. She gifted him with what she had to offer and lives in his heaaaart. Plus, the way the little syndicate team came together proved to Hei he has people on the earth now that do care about him in their own way (Huang and Mao die for him. Yin pulls him back to reality, and Misaki lets him escape.)

Although much of the ending was rushed, I *adored* the dream sequence with Hei reverting to a child. To me, the most poetic theme throughout the series was the stereotype of character forced upon Hei. He is known by like 5 different names and shows numerous different personalities. Here in this dream environment, his own person confusion is illustrated physically as everyone tells him to be himself -- he interrupts 'no I am the black reaper!' as the mask appears on his face only to be removed by Pai - "No, you're my brother."

The most important theme to be was the concept of identity. How much do we allow what society thinks of us to define who we are? And how does society react when we don't act as expected? We have Yin who is supposed to be a shell of a human with no emotions making a conscious decision to stay with her team, arms outstretched to feel the glow of the moon. April and July visit November 11's grave everyday to leave flowers and cigarettes, etc etc. Then, the people acting the most "heartlessly" are the humans basically trying to destroy the contractors out of fear. With this idea in mind, Hei is the ultimate protagonist to reflect this idea: Hei is neither human nor contractor and acts in a way that confuses everyone around him including himself as he gets lost amongst the roles he is supposed to play. Where does the real Hei lie? Is he the assassin who joined up with the Syndicate solely to stay with his sister? Is he Li Shunsheng, the quiet Chinese foreign exchange student? Is he BK201 - the cursed murderous contractor (another note, he is the only contractor who wears a mask)? Or is he the boy who gazes at the stars?]

I don't know. I just wrote a novel. But I honestly adored this series.

vouch, I just rewatched this series last night (japanese w/ subtitles), and I really do love it. spoiler[It has a good mixture of action (the fight scenes between Hei and the blood-exploding-guy are especially awesome), heart warming moments (awwww, Yin <3), drama and thrills, sad moments and funny ones (Mao is imo the funniest character in the series, his speech about contractors, fear and rational decisions followed by him turning around and attempting to meow at Amber in one of the final episodes was absolutely hilarious).]

This anime is definitely in my top 10. A rather rushed ending, but nonetheless I love the characters. I guess I also like the fact that in this anime, rather than most, it wasn't completely over-dramatised and the character's reactions seemed more realistic and less stylised. It had a very raw feel which was cool for me. Definitely worth the watch.
