Well.

That is something I certainly did not expect to read today.

Was this unknown? I see Figma ads on 4chan a lot. Although I guess you don't have to invest in a site to advertise on it. But I thought it was known Hiroyuki is pretty involved in the anime industry since he founded 2ch (or 5ch these days) and how involved it is in the industry, especially for web novels.

Also those 2 former employees.. why would you work at an anime figure company if they hate "potentially obscene sexually explicit anime products and merchandise"

Looking through the ANN thread a year ago when they reported on the employment lawsuit, everyone pretty much thought the idea of Good Smile investing in 4chan was bunk, and the Shueisha article is in Japanese, so unless you know the language, you’d still be in the dark there.

EDIT: You’re also making a pretty broad assumption about folks even using 4chan in the first place.

I heard something about this on a live stream maybe a week ago, and kind of assumed it was via 2 ch. It may seem odd at first glance, but I thought it was pretty believable with the prior history.

Question: Why do the reports focus so much on Good Smile's involvement while only mentioning Kadokawa briefly despite having twice the investment? If it were written anywhere else that would be one thing, but on a news site that's owned by Kadokawa it makes me wonder if it's having an effect on ANN's journalistic integrity, like it was written to shift pressure onto GSC and away from Kadokawa. Doesn't feel right.

^ is this your impression based on the Variety article compared to this?

I don't think I see what you're implying in either of them.

>The former employees also accused Good Smile of distributing "potentially obscene sexually explicit anime products and merchandise" of underage characters

I remember laughing at that farce back then and it's still funny even now

Oh, I thought those two completely made up all the 4chan stuff. Seems like it was only partially.

People find this surprising? I remember seeing GSC ads on the site long before GSC even tried entertaining the thought of entering the English market and when it was just anime and manga stuff. Mind you, it was via J-List advertising them so I dunno if that counts.

Quote:
According to an anonymous source at Disney interviewed by WIRED (not corroborated by ANN), Good Smile's licensing agreement with Disney will end in May. The source claimed that Disney has decided not to renew the deal after WIRED alerted the company of Good Smile's relationship with 4chan.

This, on the other hand, I'd maybe claim BS on it. Disney has some of the best lawyers on the planet and they claim that they didn't know? Maybe they just flat out had no interest on it being renewed to begin with. There is absolutely 0% Disney wasn't aware of GSC's connections.

Honestly, this and the article from last year just make me laugh hard since they both try and portray this as something shocking when if you've followed GSC for any amount of time at all for their non-western proprieties, it's really not.

Disney is currently in the process of making multiple financial cutbacks like firing thousands of employees and shutting down tons of projects. It could just be a coincidence they decided to pull out of the niche Japanese figure market

I'm asking why all the focus on GSC when Kadokawa invested twice as much? The Wired article only refers to them vaguely as a "major Japanese telecommunications company" without calling them by name. Even the ANN article, knowing better, mentions them, but really as just a footnote. I want to know more about Kadokawa and their current status with 4Chan.

Okay, I understand what you mean.

Personally, this is pretty much new news to me, so I can't say I feel as unsurprised as most of you ^^;

I'd have to read more into this, since I don't know the exact situation with Kadokawa either.

As far as Disney is concerned, I think it was more about the situation that was discovered when investigating the shooter, in Buffalo. Perhaps they then learned about it more in detail, but decided that was the nail in the coffin for their agreement. Maybe it's naive of me , but I don't know how much 4chan would be known to a multimillion corporation compared to... people who actually frequent the site regularly. It's not uncommon for business to conceal information from other companies reputation-wise. Not ethical, but I don't think I'd be that convinced about Disney knowing about that site before.

Basically funding on 4chan is something I did not expect Good Smile Company to do

4chan gets around 25 million unique users per month. It's essentially the biggest community of Japanese-focused culture in the English speaking world to the point you have Japanese creators doing AMAs on /a/ like the author for Log Horizon author and Studio Trigger. I remember series like Watamote even marketed itself in Japan as being popular on 4chan by calling it the American version of 2ch since it was one of those series that seemed to be more popular overseas than in Japan. Non-Japanese creators and fans go there too, but that's not really my forte so I'm not too familiar with them outside the big ones like Minecraft getting it's start on /v/.

Maybe they knew, maybe they didn't, but I have to concur that it's unlikely to be the reason they're not renewing their contract; assuming that part is true. Disney is not exactly known for being a upstanding moral compass. But I suppose we'll never really know.

Despite me don't liking 4chan at all, I don't see a problem with this.
