Life-Size Paper Votoms Robot Figure Unveiled at Wonder Fest

Scopedog statue is 3.8 meters/12.5 feet tall; creator sells PDF instructions

The model gun and accessory maker Dai-Nihon Giken unveiled its completed 1/1-scale Armored Trooper Votoms papercraft figure at the Wonder Festival 2013 Winter event at Makuhari Messe in Chiba on Sunday. The top and bottom halves of the Scopedog statue had to be trucked in separately and then assembled at the venue one day before the event started. Overall, the statue is 3.8 meters (about 12.5 feet) tall.

Tanegashima built the statue with a stepladder base so individuals can board its cockpit, but it ended up being too fragile to support riders. Construction of the statue took up much of creator Kenkichi Tanegashima's home before it finally made its way to Makuhari Messe.

The figure is his fourth papercraft project, and he showed the bottom half at last summer's Wonder Festival. He previously constructed and sold Mami's giant musket from Puella Magi Madoka Magica at last year's Wonder Fest convention. Customers could also purchase PDF instructions to built their own 1/1 paper Votoms statue for 3,000 yen (about US$32) at the convention, or by mail order.

Tanegashima also sold Dominator and Armor Magnum garage kits at his booth for 18,000 yen (US$194), which sold out. The Dominator is the weapon wielded by agents in Psycho-Pass while Armor Magnum is featured in Armored Trooper Votoms.

Another builder, Kōgorō Kurata, famously built a life-size statue of the Scopedog Brutish Custom out of iron about six years ago.
