I have a quick question for some of the old-school fans here.

There's an OVA I've had an interest in owning for quite some time, and I want to make sure I'm getting the right edition. The anime in question is Kite, from 1998 and directed by Yasuomi Umetsu. From what I can see on Amazon, there's a Kite Remastered, and a Kite Director's Cut. I'm interested in owning the one with higher picture quality and honestly the better cover, but I'm not sure if this is the remastering of the original uncut version (the Director's Cut), or the version which has 20ish minutes cut off of it.

If anybody can tell me which edition to get in order to have the original, uncut version with the less savory scenes intact (I can't bear watching a director's work get butchered; I'd rather see it as it was intended), it would be much appreciated. Smile

The Remastered edition of Kite appears to be the original heavily edited version of the OAV which removes nearly all the title's hentai content considering it has a 16+ age rating. The Director's Cut version restores most of the sex scenes, but some shots with an underaged Sawa are cut from the movie.

If you're looking to get the whole thing uncut, you're better off getting the Special Edition DVD of the series.

You should consider the edited version. The sex scenes were added solely for the reason of getting it greenlit in the first place, not by Umetsu's own desire, so nothing is "butchered". It's a great OVA and the sex scenes only detract from the show.

You should get this one.

In this case, I think that the edited version might be closer to what the director intended. I recall that during one of the holiday ANNCast episodes Justin Sevakis said, while explaining why it was one his favorites, that Yasuomi Umetsu prefers the edited version and made it a hentai only to get funding. Some probably like the uncut version and I think that there is one removed scene that is held to have dramatic significance, but I suspect that the 'original intent' rationale is succeptible to doubt.

I've got the complete version and the most cut version. The sex scenes are almost completely unnecessary and spoil the tone and flow of the anime.

Except... the underage scene, which occurs near the end, actually provides backstory and is very relevant to what is going on. In the cut version, the cut is awkward and there is clearly something missing.

On balance, I'd go for the edited, director's cut version. It's closer to his intentions, if not perfect.

The version you get won't change the fact it's an awful movie. I would recommend avoiding it.

I would respectfully disagree, as explained here and here. Each to their own. Wink

Since those posts I've changed its rating to very good.

While not as eloquent as errinundra posts, I, too, disagree, though not respectfully.

spoiler[I highly doubt just taking out the random horrible underage rape scenes would make me feel much different about it considering I disliked the movie's core elements as well. The characters would still be unlikable and the story would still be nothing but sex and violence with little substance and a crappy ending.]

The sex scenes were the best part. Watching it edited is just blasphemy.

Same with it's sister OVA, Mezzo Forte.

Thanks for the info as I was also concerned about this. I'm pretty confident I saw the original, unedited version as it was in the porn section. I don't recall much of this movie, but I do remember spoiler[the rape scene], well, I should say the plot element.

I've been wanting to add this to my collection, so it looks like the special edition/edited is the way to go. If the Director's Cut (odd considering he wanted it edited) screws up the original, then this isn't the one I want.

Go figure I wouldn't remember the sex scenes. Anime cry

I would be a little careful with this whole "the director only put the sex scenes in because it was a condition of the OVA getting made but he really didn't want to" stuff. It could be true or it could be bullshit. The sex scenes in Kite are actually more integral to the story than the sex scenes in Mezzo Forte which really do come out of nowhere and can be snipped in their entirety without any loss of story coherence (I still love 'em, though). Needless to say, Umetsu directed both. I dunno, the sex scenes are so lovingly rendered, I have a hard time believing he did them under duress. He was also the character designer for the Cool Devices segment that just happened to feature hardcore rape scenes of an underage schoolgirl. See a pattern here?

@ Blood-,

While I don't disagree with anything you're saying, unless the viewer has a particular liking for those types of scenes, they add little if anything to the story. I think they actually spoil the flow of each anime. If a viewer dislikes those sorts of scenes, both OAVs are fine without them.

Well, speaking as someone who has never seen the uncut version of Kite, I can honestly say that I never felt much of anything was missing. spoiler[It was pretty obvious that Sawa's "handler" was sexing her up without actually seeing it take place (when she denies his request to sit on his lap after the elevator scene).] That's all we really need, anymore and it's just... porn.
