What are your opinions on strobe lights as an effect in anime? I, having been epileptic for 2/3 of my life, (Although am not any longer), have never enjoyed them as it makes me turn away from the screen rather than look at the sweet artwork. This happened alot with DBZ, obviously, but I noticed alot of older series used it for a special effect. Although I have a soft spot for older, handdrawn series, I can't stand too much strobes so I tend to watch newer series that don't rely on them so heavily.
As sort of a side question, if anyone can recommend any older anime that might be at considered at least somewhat shonen, but don't have heavy strobe lights, that'd be cool. Thanks! |

I think most anime have tried to steer clear of the flashing lights effect ever since the Pokemon seizure incident (under "Electric Soldier Porygon"). That's probably the reason why it's used more often in older anime. There were also some new animation broadcasting standards regarding flashing lights put into effect after the episode aired. |

Precisely. Ever since then, you'll hear the cautionary phrase テレビを見る時は部屋を明るくして離れて見て下さい (Terebi o miru toki wa heya o akarukushite hanarete mite kudasai, "When watching television, please brighten the room and watch from a distance") before anime is shown on TV. - abunai |
