I recently purchased Angel Links thinking because it was from the same universe as Outlaw Star it'll be just as good. Disappointing how the show sucks. Just wondering if anyone else wasted money buying the same crap or other crap.

Well I only buy shows that I have already watched and had that "I must own this" feeling, or only after some thorough research into a particular show. One show I saw and had to have was (since you mentioned it) Outlaw Star, and one show I hadn't seen, but had a good premise and good reviews was Elfen Lied. But my one exception is I do regret buying the Naruto vol 1 uncut box, simply because it's such a massive series and I'm not a big enough fan of the series to merit buying the rest of the series.

Excel Saga: the humor just didn't work for me and I found the characters -other than Excel and Illparazo- to be totally disagreeable.
Full Metal Alchemist (4 DVDs in total): it's beyond me why this series has garnered such love and praise. I'm a sucker for sci-fis with philosophical and psychological overtones, I gave this one more chances than I should, but in every time it ended up one of the most boring experiences that I've ever had.
.hack//SIGN: the only thing that I enjoyed in this one was the soundtrack -which I ended up buying- and the character design by Sadamotto. It had a cool and original premise that sadly was poorly executed.

Angel Cop Complete Collection - It was cheap and looked cool, so I thought I'd give it a try. Didn't realize how much the show sucked until it was too late.
Pure Love - Again, the cover of this hentai title looked cool, but the actual content looked like some guy made it on his PC using the most basic animation software and no writing sense. Not sexy, not titillating, not entertaining at all.

.hack//Legend of the Twlight - I loved .hack//SIGN, .hack//Liminality, and the first set of games, so I eagerly picked this one up, even with bad reviews (after all, all .hack-related stuff has gotten quite a few bad reviews). I wish I hadn't, I really wish I hadn't. Between the characters not actually being the same characters, the ugly animation and monsters, and the scrapped together plot, I was annoyed. And then there was the 10 minute exchanges every episode of "Onii-chan!" "Rena!" "Onii-chan!" "Rena!" ad nauseum. Not only was it annoying, it was downright creepy.
On the other hand, I was very happy with my purchase of the manga. It was still a pretty blah plot, but it was executed much better, and the creepy twincest vibe was toned down to pretty much non-existent.
Neon Genesis Evangelion is the other one I truly, absolutely regret buying. However, I bought it back before there were many options for renting (and the first volume was the first DVD I ever bought), so I didn't really have a choice in buying it. I was told "You like anime? You've gotta watch Eva!" over and over again--even though my anime viewing at the time was limited to chunks Sailor Moon, Magic Knight Rayearth, Nurse Ririka SOS, and Marmalade Boy. Actually, I did rather enjoy the show for awhile, but I was one of the many who was utterly turned off by the last few episodes, and was so mad about it that even though I own Death & Rebirth and End of Evangelion (or whatever those extra DVDs are called), I still haven't watched them. I've had them for about...5 years now? Something like that. I plan on rewatching the show eventually, now that I've seen a few other shows that mess with your mind. Perhaps I'll be able to either appreciate the ending, or at the very least, not let it ruin my entire viewing experience.

Debutante Detective Corps. I bought for 3 bucks during an ADV clearance sale. "It's only 3 dollars!" I thought. "For that cheap, even if it's not very good, I'm sure I won't mind!" Who'd-a thought I could regret a 3-dollar DVD so much? I really should've known better... 5 main characters in a half-hour long show, that uses 1/3 its run time showing them arriving at school in odd ways. Yuck.
(I try to justify it with my other 3-dollar DVD, Grrl Power, which I actually really liked. "I would've paid $6 for this one alone, so I didn't really waste my money", I say. )

I just found another one while looking through my anime collection : Mahoromatic: Automatic Maiden, While watching it, I figured that I highly underestimated the warning on the back of the cover -Mahoro was awesome and her background story seemed interesting, but a teacher who lusts after her underaged student and all that emphasis on her unrealistically large melons, just turned me off after a few episodes x_x Women may would want to stay away from it.

I usually do research on a title before buying so I don't normally end up with something I don't enjoy. However, there are two exceptions that come to mind.
First is Gilgamesh, despite mixed reviews I decided the premise sounded interesting enough to look in to further. Have to say I was incredibly disappointed, not only was it incredibly dull and almost a chore to watch, but the gothic style just didn't work and the dialog was very poor. Then taking in to account that I found the animation was inconsistent and mostly very poor, often resembling old Scooby Doo episodes, though even worse I thought. Needless to say I ditched this series.
The other was Final Fantasy: Unlimited. I was on an FF spree, playing older games and racing through FFX so I admit I was just looking for more FF. So I picked up FF:U and brought it home and was horrified by how awful it was. First it had one of the worst dub performances I'd ever heard for the part of the male kid lead. The animation was poor, it didn't feel like Final Fantasy, the artwork was bad and the story was just sort of ... meh. There just wasn't anything that drew me in to this series and a lot of things that had the opposite effect. Little did I know I was in store for a lot of Final Fantasy based disappointments down the line.
I've done a lot more research since those two series to the point I'm much more cautious now and never buy without doing a lot of digging about the series at the very least.

Spiral, oh dear God I hated Spiral. I found the first two DVDs very cheap so picked them up sight unseen. I had great luck the first few times I did this, but Spiral broke me of the habit. The plot and episodes were SO bad I gave the DVDs before I evern finished them.

Technically my brother bought it. I received Death/Rebirth for me for christmas (or a birthday... I forget...) Bearing in mind I hadn't watched NGE at all before hand. Not that I blame my brother - I guess he was just down the shop, knew I liked anime and the NGE cover looks pretty cool.
Needless to say, when I tried to watch Death/Rebirth without having seen the series it left me puzzled and angry.
I have since attempted to watch the actual series and then I can rewatch my generous present. Unfortunately I realised I just didn't like the series and so I think Death/Rebirth will always be a 'waste of money DVD' for me.

Onegai Twins- I really thought is was going to have the same charm that Teacher had, but I was sadly mistaken. I never cared for the characters and thus I never cared for their circumstances.
Ai Yori Aoshi ~ Enishi- For it being like a second season, to me there was no real plot at all. Everything seemed like a filler, plus a really disappointing ending.
RahXephon OVA- yikes! It wasn't even cannon with the series. There was only about 15 minutes of information that was new and relevant to the origonal anime story, the rest just left me frustrated.

.hack and Hyper Police. .hack was okay because I got it cheap, but it really didn't have anything to draw me to it. Hyper Police was expensive, and didn't have good translation into English, I think.

Same here, I was watching on [adult swim] and got really into series, especially after episode 7 (Night of the Chimera's Cry) but after that episode, every seemed to go downhill as far as I'm concerned, especially in the second season. I stopped buying the DVDs after the first tin was filled.

Earthian dumb *sigh* It sounded a lot better in the summary, which I think is rare for anime/manga. Usually the summaries are really lame and I have since learned never to trust them. Just buy it and watch/read it.
Also ginormous series like Rurouni Kenshin and Naruto. I bought the first couple RK dvds, but at $27.00 bucks a pop I decided it wasn't financially feasible. (thank god for fansubs)
Download. Delete. Buy.
Some of you mentioned FMA. I thought the anime was alright, pretty entertaining, but skimping on a lot of plot. Read the manga if you have not done so yet. It's much better.
