Alright, so with my recent first time exposure to the loveliness that is Utena, I found that I couldn't help but to constantly make parallels and connections to Ikuhara's more recent works, Mawaru Penguindrum, with it's abstract storytelling, themes on self actualization and love... and... well... I'm putting the cart before the horse a bit here
And I guess that through these experiences, I kinda wanted to be exposed to more works that are "spiritual cousins", of sorts. Two or more things that are more or less similar in tone and theme, but are overall completely standalone and can elicit completely different emotions and viewing experiences. I kinda take that back. It doesn't really have to be JUST thematically similar. What you have in mind can be anything from the music to characters to pacing to infinity and beyond, just as long as you associate them with one another. [EDIT: Added some paragraph breaks for better readability. -TK] |

You'll have to be a little more specific in your wording. Because "pairing" anime that are similar in tone falls dangerously close to "comparing like-mindedness," which can, then, be misconstrued as a type of recommendation, and we don't really allow recommendation threads.
What exactly are you going for? |

Hmm... Yeah, now that I look at it, it's totally a recommendation thread and I have absolutely no idea what I was expecting others to make of it. How about instead of blatantly asking "give me some titles that you associate with one another" I change it to something more along the lines of "what aspects of a show can cause that association and give an example or two." That's really more of what I was going for initially anyway.

Yeah, if you break it down to more holistic points like "(very) particular aspects," I think that would narrow it down more, as opposed to just "requesting similar titles."
I could probably think of an example or two, but my brain is kinda' fried from lack of sleep, so maybe a little later -_-.. (wouldn't mind others giving it a shot, though!). |

Awesome
glad you gave this thing a shot. You heard it first folks! Specific, piecemeal examples of what might cause you to be reminded of something else and give a title or two.

Gravion and Godannar always go together in my mind because a friend and I "swapped" watching them at the same time. Beyond being funny mecha series the two have very little in common otherwise.

They also have lots of big breasted women in tight suits for another thing. Along with hapless male characters. And speaking of shows with big breasted women that are similar if you want mirror image T&A shows look no further than Queen's Blade and Ikki Tousen. One is more martial arts oriented while the other is weapon based combat. In the end both shows are about the T&A and exploding clothes. Whenever I hear anything about one I always think of the other. For me another pair of shows I tend to associate with each other are Ghost in the Shell and Patlabor. Both are futuristic "cop shows" in essence. Both feature a strong mech presence. Granted the suits used in patlabor are different than the tachikomas in GITS. To me though both shows are first and foremost "cop shows" and that is the first focus. Not the mecha aspects of the shows. Both also deal with more deeper plots involving humanity as opposed to always being just the villain of the week every episode. Both have great casts of characters that work well together. Whenever I watch one I tend to think of the other and get an urge to watch it. |

For me right now, it's Madoka and Kamen Rider Gaim. The two shows couldn't be further apart (magical girls fighting witches and street-dancing fruit-themed armored warriors fighting monsters from a strange forest). Until you start hearing 2 certain words being used repeatedly in both series: hope and despair. And the fact that spoiler[at least some of the monsters used to be people]. Yes, indeed, Urobuchi has managed to convince Toei to let him traumatize young children.
What I love, though, is that even though both have similar themes and some similar aspects, and Urobuchi wrote both, they're both independently enjoyable, and despite a few "Urobuchi, remember that you're not writing Madoka right now" moments, watching Gaim doesn't feel like I'm watching a retread of Madoka in different clothes. |

Anyway, I thought of more series that I group together. Steel Angel Kurumi Zero and Digi Charat Winter Garden both took fun-loving franchises and made cool moody dramas out of them. I'll always group those 2 together. I should also bring up Level E and Mission E. I loved Code E and was thoroughly enjoying Mission E but I never saw the end of it. When I first heard of Level E I naturally assumed they were related. They're not, but the damage was done. They're grouped together in my mind. |

Trust me when I say he didn't have to try very hard. Past Kamen Rider shows have been plenty traumatizing. For example in 555 spoiler[Orphnoch are humans who died but are lucky enough to evolve and revive.] Then there's Hibiki. Dear God, Hibiki. ... Speaking of Hibiki (segue!), I put Symphogear and Nanoha in a similar category, as they favor a technology/mecha spin on the magic girl genre. Symphogear easily wins out on hotblooded awesomeness, though. I agree with Gravion and Godannar, as I bought the thin packs at the same time. |

I'm actually still working my way through older KR series. I started with Decade, then W, OOO, Fourze (which was early in the series at the time, so I'd been caught up), and Den-O. I haven't been able to watch earlier series, though I've stayed caught up since then.

Whenever Wendee Lee voices someone, I always think of Haruhi Suzumiya, even when it's not in anime.

To come up with an answer, all I have to do is look at my DVD shelf. There's the easy ones where I order them by animation company like Kyoto Animation and Gonzo or by director like Junichi Sato...
In two seperate shelves across from each other. Well, there's literal top shelf Sato and then there's shows like Pretear and Gatekeepers. Anyways, it makes sense even if it's retroactively. For whatever reason, I have the Baka and Test series next to the Is This a Zombie? series. Goofy anime leads with wacky humor throughout and harems; Fair enough. Next to that combo is Tenchi Muyo War on Geminar and Hand Maid May. Harem lead as world savior {through the harem} with dubious fantasy and science fiction trappings. Did I mention the maids? Why do I have Elfen Lied next to Girl's Bravo? Meek wormy harem lead paired off against a violent girl romatic love interest and a simple minded and easily compliant one. Violent horror versus violent comedy? Not that different. Next to that is Genshiken which gives the club something to talk about, I guess. Midori Days next to Squid Girl; Lead heroine who is a hand is next to the one who is all hands. Alphabetical order is boring... |

I like to watch the first Kenshin OVA followed by Peacemaker Kurogane, as they both cover roughly the same events from different points of view. Granted, Peacemaker as a whole is not on the same level as the first Kenshin OVA, which is one of the greatest anime of all time, but the last five episodes are intense and make you wish it would be continued to follow the characters through the historical events which would have followed. The events of the Peacemaker anime touched just the surface of their stories, and much more happened which would be perfect material for a true epic if covered correctly.
