Somebody posted a camrip, which eventually got posted to Twitter prompting a takedown notice from khara. Only khara's response to demonstrate their ownership over the copywritten material came with the video file for the short, causing it to get disseminated in full across the internet
So now they've basically just given up and are posting the short themselves, despite intending it to be only for the event. A complete screwup all around

Made no sense why the heck they'd keep this limited to an event to begin with. I'm happy this happened.

It's a bit sad that there's no context as to why this has happened, why did Khara suddenly change mind about something they swore would never be released outside of this event (or perhaps future physical events)? Of course we've all heard rumors, but it would have been a lot more interesting to see ANN write an article that actually included a bit of research on the situation.

More than likely the backlash from the public caused them to release it.This is of course my opinion.

Khara released it to the public only because they accidentally included it themselves when retaliating through emails to people uploading camrips of it online. I wouldn’t be surprised if the public backlash contributed to this decision too though.

Heh, yeah, I had a friend share a link to the full high-quality version on Twitter yesterday. I'd like to think that a friendly Khara intern was embracing the maxim that information wants to be free.

Regardless how or why they decide to release it, I am glad they did. As a piece of nostalgia bait there is nothing better. I love all of the references to the iconic scenes(and music!) from the original series, and also the newer Rebuild films. The scene with the hand sketch images with Shinji at the train station at the train station made me tear up.
No idea how the new Eva will be like, but its been quite a ride for someone who has been there since the beginning.

The short was great!
Even though I watched it unsubbed, it was still funny!
Khara should totally do a comedy spoof skit series of Eva like FUMmOFU or Tony Takezaki's Evangelion!

They may as well try to make some revenue off it if it's going to be distributed anyway I imagine is their logic. As someone who could never go to an event and see the short, I'm kind of glad piracy forced their hand.

Unless I'm missing something, there's still no option to watch with English subs, so this is upload is still not doing it and YouTube's auto subs are completely useless.

Words on the street promised me an Asushin ending from this short. The ending we got was surprisingly not quite that, but close.

So everyone has an ending now but Rei? Mari for Rebuild, Asuka for this

At the time I'm writing this comment, the short has amassed almost 3 million views on YouTube alone, now it seems Khara's former statements that the short was only going to be shown on Evangelion's 30th anniversary event kind of dumb in retrospect, like, why wouldn't they want people all over the world to be able to watch the short, I'm reminded of Hideaki Anno's recent commnents that he makes anime just for the Japanese, but they cannot ingnore Evangelion's international audience. Why couldn't they had official subtitles ready or even trying to contact Evangelion's international dub VAs to voice the short?

Pretty sure you're mixing apples and bricks there. Anno's words did not imply anime isn't made to be seen by anyone other than the Japanese, but rather that anime is made with the Japanese in mind, it's their target objective, which doesn't mean they don't provide it to overseas viewers, it actually means the "flavor" of anime is there because it is made with the Japanese values, culture, and ideas in mind, not the international audience's... we've all seen what happens when an anime is pandered to "overseas" people, it ends up as a soulless, empty, and "tries to please all" nonsense
As for the short not being available outside of the event, that was an intent on Khara's (or Anno's) part, as it was intended to be a manzai comedy, mimicking a real theatre's manzai show, so it makes sense for it to be shown in a specific setup, not on a TV screen. That is, apparently, the idea anyway, which doesn't mean many people weren't sour about this, since for a plethora of reasons, they weren't able to go to the exhibition (distance, money, timing..., you name it).
As for the lack of English subtitles? That's an obvious and logical thing, the short/OVA/special was not intended to be viewed nor sold outside the event, which is held in Japan alone, and is intended to be seen by the Japanese, safe for the occasional foreigner. In other words, adding English subtitles was unnecessary, and an added cost with no obvious benefit. The fact they ended up posting the short on Youtube is only a consequence of unfortunate events surrounding the situation, not at all an intentional, planned thing, so they were not able to add the subtitles in time (and please, even if fan subs were made in a matter of hours, those do not go through a professional process, which can take weeks, if not months).
