One of the worst anime I've ever seen no question

Quite obvious the franchise doesn't fall on the reviewer's tastes. Laughing

Otherwise, the anime is/was quite popular, at least when season 1 aired, and the light novel itself is trailing DanMachi in numbers in both in the West and in Japan if last year's numbers are to be believed. I haven't watched the anime personally, but am reading the novel.

It and Alya are probably the two leading shonen romcoms currently running?

It is a slow show without a doubt, but it is a compelling romance.

The book is definitely better, but not really in an "OMG! Don't judge it by the anime, the book is soooooo much better!!!!!" way, though there could be an argument for volume 1. I thought S1 was OK enough, but I kind of can't stand season 2 so far: boiling the books down to just the pure plot, and none of the inner thoughts of the protagonists reveals that there really isn't much of a plot or story aside from the bare minimum. And now that they're declared their feelings (for two entire episodes) there's nothing much more going on.

As for the books, in English there's currently 11 (1-10 and an 8.5), with another one scheduled for August. I read up to 8.5, getting progressively more bored, and more importantly, more frustrated and annoyed with Amane, and only made it halfway through 8.5. There's a very very slight chance that if the book series ends soon, like with volume 11 or 12, that I'll read the rest just out of curiosity about how it wraps up, but there's a LOT of other books, manga, anime in line ahead of it. If it goes beyond 12 the chance of me reading will drop to 0.

I suppose I have to agree with the reviewer, the anime really is bad. What's more, the LN isn't much better either, it reads like something from the 1950's. And yet I love them both, so what can I do?

Kennedy's two reviews of this series: F.

They show no understanding of the progression of the characters from the first season, the manga, or the light novels. The second season immediately follows the story from the first season, and knowing the plot makes a huge difference. Admittedly, if you didn't follow the first season, you won't understand why the second is what it is.

So please, find a reviewer willing to put in the work to understand what's actually going on in the story.

Reading 9 and 10 are definitely worth it. Don't be discouraged by 5.5 and 8.5; those sets of side stories are mostly disposable.

Cool! Thanks for that! I guess I'll drudge through the rest of 8.5 to get there. I don't feel right skipping it.

While I can see where the criticisms in the review are coming from, and do agree that this was a slow-developing one, I had a much more positive reaction to it overall and felt that the central relationship was sufficiently earned. Not a great series, but I was satisfied enough with the first season that I'll stick with it through the second.

Mostly disposable, but there's a story in 8.5 - A Secret Just for Two - that I think should have been in the main sequence as it leads directly into the start of volume 9.

Haven't read the books, and I already made these comments in the series discussion forum, but I like the show. The main thing that frustrates me is how many times the MC goes "Damn it, don't tempt me woman! Do you now understand what will happen if I unleash the howling wolves of lust!" or something to that effect. While she's forced to do most of the heavy lifting in terms of moving the relationship forward.

The main thing I like is watching these two damaged people create their own private snow globe where they gradually feel safe enough to come out of their shells. That's why I don't find it boring.

Season 2 seems to be about emerging from that snow globe to deal with the world at large.

I'd like to point out, since some of my comments may have been unclear, that when I started the books, the main thing I liked, and why I started them in the first place, was for the slow-burn romance. (My favorite LN series only has the confession in book 5!) So that's not what I mind in the show exactly. It's just that in the second season it's becoming too clear (for me) that without the inner thoughts and other aspects of the difference between book and show, its not compelling enough. I'll probably still stick with it though. Interestingly, it's a show I get more enjoyment out of when rewatching YouTube reaction videos.
