They still strangely have not said. I'm guessing it's a movie because it's titled similarly to the 'Reze Arc' movie as 'Assassin's Arc.' Indicating it will only cover that arc, which is pretty self-contained like Reze, and is not that much longer than Reze either. A proper Season 2 will probably follow which won't have any arc names as those are more spoilery, plus the next arcs have more closer continuity between them that, in my opinion, are better told continuously in weekly episodes, as they would suffer if broken up into films as none of them are long enough to work as films and together are too long to be 1 film. By adapting the Assassin arc by itself as another movie leaves Season 2 with enough time to wrap the entire 1st Part of Chainsaw-Man with a regular 12 - 13 episode run. This would work well story-wise. It is also possible that MAPPA could just do a longer Season 2 of more than 12-13 episodes, and 'Assassin's Arc' is simply the first bunch of episodes from Season 2 being released as a theaterical special, like JJK Season 3... But that was not something MAPPA tried to hide with JJK, and just called it Season 3 The Culling Games Part 1.
That only applies to new original stuff under Netflix, which let's them control the IP.
I'm guessing Japanese theaterical release in Fall 2027. |

The arc is 18 chapters long, only 4 more than the Reze film, and not much happens either. The less than half as long follow-up arc is more memorable.

Right! Reze was 14 chapters and ran 1:20 (100 mins) Assassin's Arc is 18 chapters, and assuming a similar ratio would be a little over 2:00 (120 mins). As most of the chapters are action heavy, even with MAPPA original animation sequences, it would still be fine as a 2 hour adaptation, and the pacing will feel much faster than Reze. Many big anime films are over the 2 hour mark - Akira 2:04, Spirited Away 2:05, Princess Mononoke 2:13, Wins Rises 2:06, Demon Slayer Mugen Train 1:57, Demon Slayer Infinity Castle 2:35. So Chainsaw Man pushing a 2+ hour movie after Reze's success isn't out of the ordinary. In fact that can ride Reze's success with a longer film, and believe me it will actually feel shorter as this arc is very fast paced and focuses more on plot development and lore. A proper Season 2 will benefit from Assassin's being it's own film and picking up where it leaves off. |

I don't know if I should be surprised they put the scene with all the ladies in bed together in the trailer. On the one hand, of course they did, but I still wasn't expecting it.
I can't wait to tell people Happy Halloween. |

Another reason why I think this will be a movie. Less censorship concerns for TV broadcast.  Until it is broadcast on TV anyway...
I could see them releasing this near Halloween 2027.
