Characters who display lovable cuteness, comedic value, or impressive combat skills are commonplace in anime, but far rarer are the characters who triumph through intelligence, cleverness, and/or cunning. The goal of this tournament is to determine which character is the brightest of the bright and the cleverest of the clever, as determined by forumite votes. This is a tournament where the prodigies, technical whizzes, masterminds, ace detectives and top students shine.

NOTE: Since this tournament is being run on an English-language site based in North America, official English spellings, title translations, and naming conventions will be observed in any case where it matters.

NOTE #2: This tournament is about assessing characters based on classical interpretations of intelligence. Body-Kinesthetic intelligence, Interpersonal intelligence, and other exotic interpretations on intelligence from Multiple Intelligence Theory do not apply here.

Tournament Rules/Standards:
1. This is a single elimination tournament using a standard advancement bracket.
2. Advancement is determined by receiving a plurality of votes in a given match-up. In the event of a tie, all tying participants advance.
3. The field is divided into four lettered Groups, each representing one of the four major branches of the bracket.
4. Each voting phase will last exactly one week, beginning and ending at midnight Tuesday forum time. No votes posted after the cut-off time will be accepted, even if an official end to the round hasn’t been announced.
5. Anyone who is a registered forum member in good standing (i.e. you aren’t currently banned) is allowed to vote, regardless of whether or not you’ve participated in any previous round or group. However, you must vote for all match-ups in a particular week or none of your votes will be counted.
6. Although providing reasons for your votes is not required, it is strongly encouraged, as not everyone is going to know every character and convincing arguments have proven to be a major factor in past tournaments.
7. Key is the final arbiter of the tournament unless he specifically passes on authority to someone else.
8. Please note that this is a tournament strictly for anime characters. Deeds/characterizations offered in manga or novels which goes beyond what is shown in the anime version is inadmissible for consideration.

References
Since voters are not expected to know everyone going in, a Guide which briefly describes each character is being provided. This is broken down by Groups and is linked below and in the set-up post for each round. Relevant video clips will also be linked to participants beginning with Round 3, and pictures will be linked on all character postings.

A1:

L

Went with the one I know.

A2:

Jimmy Kudo/Conan Edogawa

Knew neither, just guessed.

A3:

Kazundo Gohda

Went with the one I know.

A4:

Yuko Amasawa/Isako

More realistic choice.

A5:

Makubex

Know neither, guessed.

A6:

Urumi Kanzaki

Went with the one I know.

A7:

Motoko Kusanagi

Went with the one I know.

A8:

Near

Near is clearly smarter, and of course spoiler[dum dum dum.]

A9:

Char Aznable

Char is more intelligent in a practical way, possessing great cunning. Minoru was a great engineer, and technologically savvy, but that's it.

A10:

Ayumu Narumi

Vote against Kenshin.

A11:

Ryoko Uchida

Seen neither, Noein is far more intellectual.

A12:

Yurika Misumaru

Went with the one I know.

A13:

Shuurei Kou

Seems very smart, determined and hard-working. I'm a softy for that sort of female.

A14:

Autor

Durandel was more a child of poor writing than actually being a proper mastermind.

A15:

Yukino Miyazawa

Went with the one I know.

A16:

Shikamaru

Realistic choice.

Key, a good fourth of those pictures are broken links. Just a heads up. I mean, being unable to see Gouda's ugly mug makes me all sad inside. Wink

WHEE! Let's get this show on the road! At least this time I saved the hard copy from the mini-game to help me remember who to vote for!

Group A-1
L, Death Note
vs.
Dr. Kosaku Tokita, Paprika

I'm going to vote for L not because I've read/watched the series but because of what others have said.

Group A-2
Jummy Kudo/Conan Edogawa, Case Closed/Detective Conan
vs.
Yuko Ichihara, xxxHOLiC

Yuuko because I'm a big fan of her and of Clamp and because she is very intelligent...even if others don't always understand what she says.

Group A-3
Kazundo Gouda, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig
vs.
Yang Wen-Li, Legend of the Galactic Heroes franchise

This was a guess for me but mainly because of the popularity of the series: Kazundo Gohda

Group A-4
Yuko Amasawa/Isako, Dennō Coil
vs.
Choji Suitengu, Speed Grapher

Another guess for me but I'm going with Yuko Amasawa.

Group A-5
Rin Kobayashi, Please Save My Earth
vs.
Makubex, Getbackers

Because I nominated the guy and I like his intellegence, my vote is for Makubex.

Group A-6
Urumi Kanzaki, Great Teacher Onizuka
vs.
Shima Katase, Stellvia

Because she's just so darn cute and the fact that she tried so hard to overcome her self perceived weakness, Shima Katase.

Group A-7
Eyes Rutherford, Spiral
vs.
Motoko Kusanagi, Ghost in the Shell franchise

I'm going with Eyes Rutherford because I've seen the series and I liked how he made the lead character dance to his own tune so to speak.

Group A-8
Near, Death Note
vs.
Alex Rowe, Last Exile

I'm going with Alex Rowe because 1. I've seen the series and 2. there are already two other DN characters that I'm going to vote for.

Group A-9
Minoru Kokobunji, Chobits
vs.
Char Aznable/Casval Rem Daikun, UC-related Gundam titles

I'm going with Char Aznable because I've heard enough about him that he's a much admired person...regardless of his methods.

Group A-10
Kenshin Himura, Rurouni Kenshin franchise
vs.
Ayumu Narumi, Spiral

Ayumu Narumi because he was able to work his way out of the fiendish plots that Eyes and the others planned just for him.

Group A-11
Amy Mizuno (aka Sailor Mercury), Sailor Moon
vs.
Ryoko Uchida, Noein

Do you even have to ask on this one? Ami Mizuno because she is very smart and to keep my fangirl side happy.

Group A-12
Yurika Misumaru, Martian Successor Nadesico
vs.
Ichigo Morino, Please Teacher!

I don't think that she's going to last long because for a smart person, she's pretty dumb (and very single minded) but my vote is going to Yurika Misumaru.

Group A-13
Shuurei Kou/Hong, The Story of Saiunkoku
vs.
Dewey Novak, Eureka Seven

My vote is going to Shuurei Kou mainly because I've seen the series.

Group A-14
Gilbert Durandal, Gundam SEED Destiny
vs.
Autor, Princess Tutu

Again, because I've seen the series and because he was very helpful to Fakir, Autor

Group A-15
Miria, Claymore
vs.
Yukino Miyazawa, His and Her Circumstances (aka Kare Kano)

This was a complete guess on my part but the vote goes to Miria

Group A-16
Mr. X, Argento Soma
vs.
Shikamaru Nara, Naruto

My vote is going to Mr. X mostly because I really can't believe that someone from Naruto is all that super intelligent.

Group A-1
L, Death Note
vs.
Dr. Kosaku Tokita, Paprika

Tough call, since I've actually seen both of these, but I'm voting for L, he figures out things very fast based on incredibly tiny details.

Group A-2
Jummy Kudo/Conan Edogawa, Case Closed/Detective Conan
vs.
Yuko Ichihara, xxxHOLiC

Jimmy Kudo on the basis that I havn't seen/read xxxHolic but have seen Case Closed

Group A-3
Kazundo Gouda, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig
vs.
Yang Wen-Li, Legend of the Galactic Heroes franchise

Yang Wen-Li, havn't seen either, but I'll probably see Legend of the Galatice Heroes sooner than GITS

Group A-4
Yuko Amasawa/Isako, Dennō Coil
vs.
Choji Suitengu, Speed Grapher

*changing my vote to Suitengu, based on DerekTheRed's campaign. Since I never bothered to finish Denno Coil, I feel no guilt in changing my vote. I might watch Speed Grapher though.

Group A-5
Rin Kobayashi, Please Save My Earth
vs.
Makubex, Getbackers

Rin Kobayashi, havn't seen Getbackers

Group A-6
Urumi Kanzaki, Great Teacher Onizuka
vs.
Shima Katase, Stellvia

Urumi Kanzaki, havn't seen Stellvia and it probably wouldn't matter to me who Urumi was up against, I'd still probably vote for her even if I knew the other character.

Group A-7
Eyes Rutherford, Spiral
vs.
Motoko Kusanagi, Ghost in the Shell franchise

Eyes Rutherford, I've seen a few episodes of Spiral, and I know that Spiral is full of smart people

Group A-8
Near, Death Note
vs.
Alex Rowe, Last Exile

Alex Rowe, currently in the process of watching Last Exile, but I jsut don't find Near to be as smart as a lot of the other Death Note characters.

Group A-9
Minoru Kokobunji, Chobits
vs.
Char Aznable/Casval Rem Daikun, UC-related Gundam titles

Char Aznable, going on reputation here

Group A-10
Kenshin Himura, Rurouni Kenshin franchise
vs.
Ayumu Narumi, Spiral

Ayumu Narumi, actually seen enough of both series on this one, I perfer Ayumu's logic.

Group A-11
Amy Mizuno (aka Sailor Mercury), Sailor Moon
vs.
Ryoko Uchida, Noein

Ryoko Uchida, havn't seen Sailor Moon, Uchida was quite possibly the smartest character in Noein and thought decades ahead of her time

Group A-12
Yurika Misumaru, Martian Successor Nadesico
vs.
Ichigo Morino, Please Teacher!

Yurika Misumaru, guide

Group A-13
Shuurei Kou/Hong, The Story of Saiunkoku
vs.
Dewey Novak, Eureka Seven

Dewey Novak, guide

Group A-14
Gilbert Durandal, Gundam SEED Destiny
vs.
Autor, Princess Tutu

Autor because I've seen Princess Tutu (about 4 times)

Group A-15
Miria, Claymore
vs.
Yukino Miyazawa, His and Her Circumstances (aka Kare Kano)

Yukino Miyazawa, saw a bit of Claymore, and no one struck me as super intelligent

Group A-16
Mr. X, Argento Soma
vs.
Shikamaru Nara, Naruto

Mr. X, I too have trouble beleiving someone from the Naruto universe to be more intelligent than half of group A

Amen to that. Hopefully, I can use that to my advantage because I've actually seen a lot of these shows, unlike the 40-60 relationship I had with the Duo tournament. (Having seen like 40%, and not the entire series thereof in most cases. -.-')

A-1
L
Sadly, I've not seen Paprika, (I will! I must!) but any inventor of sleep psychosis machines, no matter how charming and brilliant, can surpass the disturbedly delightful mind belonging to L. He posits that a victory in round 1 will be about 87%.

A-2
Jimmy Kudo/Conan Edogawa
This is a tougher one, but I chalk a lot of Yuuko's brilliance to the same source as Ginko of Mushi-Shi's: experience. Jimmy Kudo can't really claim that up front. He's just brilliant all on his own, not only in the cases he masters, but fooling your own girlfriend, (who is also quite brilliant) into thinking you're on vacation and NOT right under her nose for ten-something years is a big deal, too. (Not that he knows anything about women, but that's all guys for you.)

A-3
Kazundo Gouda
Yang Wen-Li is a tactician and a man of charisma and simplicity. But Gouda is all that and then some, (minus the simple part) and he's clever enough to get away with being horribly two-faced. He's so smart and so ahead of the game during the whole conspiracy plot of 2nd gig that he's actually scary whenever he talks. You often wonder what he's REALLY thinking even when it looks like he's being honest for once, either to the unsuspecting good guys or his own compatriots. (Well, the face is scary too. The face is freakin' creepy.)

A-4
Yuko Amasawa/Isako
Haven't seen either series in question, but out of all the characters I had to look up more info on for the tourney, Isako's profile stays MOST firmly in my mind. That girl sounds like a machine. Seriously. Crazy multi-tasking mindbending skillz.

A-5
Rin Kobayashi
Two wicked little children... Twisted Evil I simply found one to be more wicked and manipulative than the other is all. He does all that MakubeX does at a younger age, and he has better people manipulation skills. (Could be because he's cuter?)

A-6
Urumi Kanzaki
I'm...not sure why dear little Shima is here honestly. She is very very intelligent and learned in the bookish/hands-on sense, but I don't remember her being particularly daring or plotting or...I don't know that she showed much initiative as a pilot. (It has, however, been a LONG time since I saw Stellvia and I saw just two episodes.) Urumi is a hoot, though, and apparently her IQ is over 200? Sweet, didn't know that...

A-7
Motoko Kusanagi
Eyes Rutherford, you cute little pansy in all those car commercials, you! Anime smallmouth Well, he's clever, but he takes a backseat to the real brain-baby in Spiral, who is also in this bracket...anyway. Motoko is a top competitor period if only for showing intelligence in so many fields, tech work, battle tactician, head knowledge, negotiations, deduction skills, and hey, even martial arts and combat takes a fair amount of know-how in order to react quickly, as she often has to. (Batou, just leave her alone...)

A-8
Near
Eh, this is a tough call, but Near does prove himself to be brilliant. The BIGGEST problem I have with him is one I'll bring up fairly often in this tourney, I'm sure. He's smart, but not proactive about it. Still, the same could be said of the languishing, brooding Alex Rowe, so I'll give Near the nod. Hey, in Near's favor, throwing money around, (sometimes literally) is very proactive! Very Happy

A-9
Char Aznable
Proactivity gets Minoru here. They're probably equally "smart," but Minoru is essentially the "exposition man" of Chobits, and even spoiler[his circuits get overloaded by a certain hacker otaku late in the series.] Char keeps himself busy through several seasons of war, and looks good doing it.

A-10
Ayumu Narumi
I could almost call him Jimmy Kudo Jr. (Oops, that's more like that Osakan rival of Kudo's. So Ayumu is Jimmy Jr Jr.?) He has an uncanny ability to solve any puzzle without losing his glum and angsty cool, even when he finds himself attached to explosives or suspected of foul play. Comparing him to Kenshin, who is probably less intelligent and crafty than his kindred spirit Vash the Stampede who isn't even in this tournament, makes it an easy choice. (I mean, c'mon, Vash fights with his brain and doesn't kill anybody AND he calculates bullet trajectories/complex plant chemical equations in his head and he's not here...I just don't think it's his or Kenshin's game.)

A-11
Sailor Mercury
Just because what little I saw of Ryoko colored me unimpressed. A lot of those kids are bright, and she's too emotional and inactive for my tastes to be a superbrain. But Sailor Mercury's, um...smart. Laughing

A-12
Ichigo Morino
Haven't seen Please Teacher! (someone wanted me to but the subject matter made me turn it down at the time...) but this is very much a vote AGAINST Yurika. I mean, she's like Shima of Stellvia in that she's booksmart, and she makes some life-saving decisions, but...eh. She's really spacey, really sweetsy, and for as many life-saving decisions as she makes, she also pulls a lot of crap that sends the whole boat on red alert and gets her and anyone causing issues for Akito in deep trouble. She's capable (sometimes), but not brilliant.

A-13
Shuurei Kou
Just started watching this show. That is a strong female character for you, and half her brains is in her people skills. She knows how to work a chain of command in a society that's hell-bent on telling her what kind of person she is when she's much more than that. Even if that weren't the case, though, I'd vote against Dewey. I mean, he does spoiler[start a program or two brainwashing children] but he is largely inactive for the series' run, and that's a crime for a master tactician. At least put in appearances in your own show. A lot of his plots go through, honestly, because the military state is ripe for ideas like his anyway. It could have been anybody in his position to put forth the changes he did.

A-14
Gilbert Durandal
This one...I could be swayed on. Autor seemed like too much of an exposition man/mentor figure to me, not a true working mastermind, so I stuck with what I was familiar with. Still, Gilbert is a valid choice given his brilliance as a politician and tactician. Yay for propaganda!

A-15
Miria
I don't care for either of these two, but this is a vote against Yukino. She's bright and sometimes perceptive...but that's it. She's actually pretty oblivious in many regards and being game show-worthy isn't enough for me.

A-16
Shikamaru
He comes into his own overtime, though I'd be hard-pressed to call him a genius when we first meet him. Actually, his evolution as a character is almost inspiring, and one of the better parts of Naruto. Thumbs-up from me. ...And...who's this Mr. X? He was hard to even find information on....

All of the broken links should be fixed now. (The big problem was that I keep forgetting that any .jpg file I put through Windows Paint comes out as .JPG instead when you save it off, and that's not the same when it comes to file names.)

And that's why I voted for Shikamaru, despite not being very impressed with him. Hardly anyone knows who Mr. X is, and I'm not surprised. A mysterious and rarely seen character from a little-known EVA-clone isn't going to get much love, no matter how clever. Obscurity comes with that sort of territory.

It's really hard, actually. I have to balance my feelings against the harsh call of realism. And then, to make matters worse, if I don't know either character, I have to put my faith in chance. Cold, sneering, uncaring, emotionless chance. And if I pick wrong, I have to live with the anguish of reflecting on what could have been.

Ai ai ai.

Time for me to let loose on this tourney. Laughing

Group A-1: L (Death Note)
Besides by reputation amongst fans, L does all he can to maintain a keen sense of logic regardless of how unusual it makes him look to others. Dr. Chiba might be more intelligent in the field of science. But, he isn't as analytical with detail as L can gather up from observations.

Group A-2: Conan Edogawa (Detective Conan)
I haven't seen xxxHolic, but I've read up on details of Yuko's character. Conan/ Shinichi relies on his keen observation of the most obscure details to figure out the actions of criminals so he as a detective, he is pretty skilled in analytical details and takes the initiative with what he discovers. Yuko, while intelligent, seems to be the type to let things progress which detracts from how I would want to view her.

Group A-3: Kazundo Gouda (GITS: SAC 2nd GIG)
Taking advantage of political tensions and knowing how to manipulate them in his favor was on a grand enough scale for me to pick Kazundo.

Group A-4: Yuko Amasawa (Denno Coil)
Haven't seen Speed Grepher, but learning about Choji made me see him as a guy just consumed with revenge. Yuko, on the otherhand, seems like quite a hacker with her computing skills and has me tempted to wanna check out Denno Coil in the near future.

Group A-5: Rin (Please Save My Earth)
Being able to manipulate all the folks he knew in his past life towards suffering had a grand scale of cleverness compared to the hacking skills of Makubex.

Group A-6: Urumi Kanzaki (Grand Teacher Onizuka)
Being a natural genius, Urumi's intelligence surpasses all her teachers and she's clever enough to even get things into school which other kids with a bad reputation wouldn't have the smarts to do. Being able to keep a guy like Onizuka under control with some clever tricks earns her some cleverness points as well. I haven't seen Stellvia so from what I've heard of Shima, she doesn't seem as clever with her brains as Urumi would be.

Group A-7: Motoko Kusanagi (Ghost in the Shell)
Motoko's skills with computers and robotics as well as being clever enough to cheat death on a few occasions surpass the clever and intellectual talents I've seen from Eyes.

Group A-8: Near (Death Note)
Throughout Last Exile, I had the feeling that Alex just sat around or showed off his accuracy with weaponery so I couldn't see what made him such a smart or clever captain. While nowhere as clever as L, I've seen enough cleverness from L to give him the vote for this match.

Group A-9: Char Aznuble (Mobile Suit Gundam)
Besides his reputation amongst fans, Char's quite the capable commander and the manipulative fellow. Having both the intelligence and cunning to lead easily surpasses the computer and persocon making talents of Minoru.

Group A-10: Ayumu Narumi (Spiral)
Ayumu has the analytical skills of a detective allowing him to get out of any threatening situation the Blade Children throw him in. Kenshin's only analytical during the heat of battle to observe his opponent's fighting style.

Group A-11: Ryoko Uchida (Noein)
With enough knowledge on quantum mechanics and being able to understand science decades ahead of her time, Ryoko surpasses Sailor Mercury in intelligence.

Group A-12: Yurika Misumaru (Nadesico)
Morino may have emotional maturity and been clever enough to try manipulating a relationship for her friend. But having the capability to become a captain allows Yurika's talents to outshine Morino due to having a position of authority and responsibility.

Group A-13: Dewey Novak (Eureka 7)
Dewey took advantage of his military status by manipulating many of the planet's human population to believe he had a just cause while only trying to push along his own radical agenda against his brother, Holland.

Group A-14: Gabriel Durandel (Gundam Seed Destiny)
Granted I've seen neither series. But from reading about Gabriel, he seemed like a brilliant scientist who took advantage of his status in PLANTS to manipulate folks to do his bidding until they are of no further use to him. Autor didn't seem to have anything on that level of cunning and intelligence.

Group A-15: Yukino Miyazawa (Kare Kano)
Besides being one of my favorite anime heroines, the fact she could hold up the facade of being a smart, friendly, and athletic girl since being a child makes Yukino quite the cunning gal.

Group A-16: Shikamaru (Naruto)
Mr. X didn't have anything that stood out for me when I researched on him. Seeing enough of the tactics Shikamaru did to outsmart his foes on enough occasions, the kid's smart and clever enough to get my vote.

A-1: L. Without a doubt, he is one of the smartest characters I can atone to seeing in an anime series. He is spoiler[having to battle one of the more sinister of villains, one who doesn't know how deep they are, though he comprehends that is risking his life to try and put this criminal to justice.]

A-2: Yuko Ichihara. I was thinking about going with Jimmy, but there is lot more I think that Yuko has to deal with, on a vast power level compared to where Jimmy is at. That's just my thoughts.

A-3: Kazundo Gouda. The guy is spoiler[trying to bring down the government of Japan, how much smarter could you be than that?! At that particular level, making Section 9 have to think even harder to try and outsmart him. Which is what makes him a very intelligent person.]

A-4: Choji Suitengu. I actually don't know either character from either of the series, so I am just picking one.

A-5: Makubex. I know of the series Getbackers, although this is based on what I have read of the manga, but still Makubex is a cyber genius so to speak.

A-6: Shima Katase. Don't know either of the series, but the cutie genius appeals.

A-7: Motoko Kusanagi. First of all, how could you have two masterminds from a series like Ghost in the Shell in the same bracket? But whatever. Motoko Kusanagi spoiler[not only has the looks to do her job, but also the training and thinking factor as well, as she has to many times go into plan B, which usually would take quite a bit of time to come up with, but she is capable of doing it in a matter of seconds when time may be running out on something important.]

A-8: Near. Another person that I am shocked to find in the same bracket as somebody from the same series, especially when it's freaking damn Near versus L! WTF!? Near spoiler[clearly proves himself to be the successor of L, although there are the times when he can't do it alone, when he knows he can use all the help he can get. Still, he is the one who is able to outwit even Light.]

A-9: Minoru Kokubunji. Haven't seen either series, but I know of Chobits.

A-10: Kenshin Himura. Haven't seen the other series and I haven't seen this series to remember anything to summarize kenshin in a good way, but I still vote for him.

A-11: Aya Mizuno. Haven't seen Sailor Moon in forever either, but I still like the series, so I vote for Sailor Mercury!

A-12: Yurika Misumaru. Haven't seen either series, but I know a little bit more about Nadesico through the manga, so I vote for Yurika.

A-13: Shuurei Kou-Hong. Dewey spoiler[doesn't know crap about what he's doing, even though he's practically the number one guy with a plan to take over the world or whatever he was trying to accomplish.]

A-14: Gilbert Durandal. Don't know either series, so I just went with a random pick.

A-15: Miria. C'mon, I love Claymore the series, and I don't know about the other one, so...

A-16: Mr. X. Don't know either series, but I like the goatee.

Group A-3
Kazundo Gouda, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig vs.
Yang Wen-Li, Legend of the Galactic Heroes franchise

Voting For: Yang Wen-Li, Legend of the Galactic Heroes
Reason: It’s difficult to say who is more intelligent as I don’t know Kazundo Gohda. However, Yang Wen-li’s adroitness allowed him to survive longer than he would if he wasn’t clever. Had it not been for his insight and admittedly Dusty little help he would have died at the time when the prequel My Conquest is the Sea of Stars took place. Even Reinhard acknowledge Yang Wen-li to be a capable tactician. spoiler[ The best example of it is the fact that after the recapture of Iserlohn by Yang Wen-li Reinhard himself led army to fight with Yang Wen-li’s fleet even though Yang Wen-li’s fleet was at a great numerical disadvantage. However, neither Reinhard nor his admirals were able to defeat him and Yang Wen-li died undefeated. After the death of Yang Wen-li, Reinhard didn’t want to fight with remains of Free Plants army, which the Yang Wen-li’s fleet was, because without such a skillful tactician it was like flogging a dead horse.] Yang Wen-li didn’t gain the monikers “The magician” “Miraculous Yang” for nothing, after all. I think he deserves my vote
Possibility of Change: Slim
