It was a big disappointment. First of all, it was advertised to have merchants, at least how I understood it. I'd be looking at the Frame Arms Girl display, just to be disappointed when I learned I needed a badge to visit their booth at Comic Con. I'd see people carrying around all this anime merch and it'd all be from Comic Con.
Next, the FAG panel was interesting. The main attraction, the movie, had the seats set up poorly. I was close to the middle row and it was impossible to read the subtitles without constantly moving my neck around. I wanted to talk to the panelists (wasn't this the point of such a small event), but they left as soon as the movie started. I did overall enjoy the small event, but was disappointed in the overall quality of the convention. They needed merchants and more stuff to do. Or at least reduce the price.

I haven't been to either of the last 2 NYCC/Anime Fest, but the failure both years does not surprise me.

NYCC Actually had Anime Fest back in 2007 (And I think maybe in 2006 too?) and I attended in 2007. It was also the same year they hosted the one and only "American Anime Awards"

I went because I was more into the Anime Fest portion of the con then the Comic Con portion, but I went to both obviously. The Anime Fest portion was held in either the basement or a parking-garage-feeling location of the Javitz, out of the way and not very large. There were a few panels, no separate artist alley or dealers room. The panel rooms were too small and couldn't half the attendees waiting in line. Other then a few signs saying you were in Anime Fest, scheduling signs and room panel signs, I don't even remember there being any decorations for that section of the convention.

I left very disappointed and actually walked to Book-Off and bought more anime merchandise there then I did at the con.

I attended the American Anime Awards as well. It was an entertaining show, but I remember the nominees being very confusing because instead of selecting the best anime/manga of that year they went and picked nominees from anime of years past. Like the more recent Fullmetal Alchemist competed against Ranma 1/2 and Akira. It was bizarre. o_o

I think my ONLY highlight of the con was despite not being a big western comic fan, getting to see Stan Lee up close when he walked past one of the lines we were standing in to get into an event.

So yeah, NYCC doesn't have a history of treating anime with the highest regards.

They did combine NYCC and Anime Fest in the Javits before, though it was under another name. They used to put all the Anime specific stuff up on the fourth level where the press and cosplay lounges are now. Anime merch dealers were with all the rest of the regular dealers, but they had a dedicated Anime Artist Alley set up in the front and few stages set up in the back. That also gave access to an outside balcony with the water as a backdrop that was great for photos. I think 2011 or 2012 was the last year they had it set up like that, which is a real shame.
