If this rumor is true this is great news and while adults can make their own decisions having high school students in gravure photo shoots simply made the idol industry look sleazy. Wake Up Girls was one of the few anime that covered this issue and while it is only a rumor at least it would indicate that there is concern over this issue.

I'd say something like "it's good to finally see change in this regard" but it's enormously depressing that it even happens in the first place.

This is why I think beauty and swimsuit competitions should be reserved for those 18+. Only in fiction, particularly anime/manga/LN, could you really get away with this type of event.

Look, what's accepted in one country might not be in another. The Japanese have their beliefs, and we have ours.

That being said, I do agree that this is good news, but the fact that it happens at all is pretty disheartening.

Great, now maybe they'll end the romance ban, sponsor a public service campaign to convince fans that idols are people with the freedom to live their own lives, and issue a profound apology to Minegishi for how they treated her.i

Ha ha ha ha, yeah, who'm I kidding.

It's sad that the suspected motivation for this is the 2020 Olympics. I imagine if they weren't worried about looking bad to the silly foreigners, they wouldn't make this move at all.

Is this where I go to publically declare my support for the move whilst my inner perv secretly weeps tears of fury?

I’d say this is a good thing. Shame they didn’t think of it sooner.

Despite the word "young" in their titles, these magazines visibly target a postpubescent audience.

Young/Yangu in the Japanese publishing industry refers to the young end of the adult market; i.e., late teens/early 20's. So, for example, Young Jump caters to a somewhat older audience than Shounen Jump, while the josei magazine Young You catered to a slightly younger audience than the original You (aimed at women in their mid 20's). In general, if a seinen magazine has "young" in the title, it tends to be heavier on the sex and violence, in line with what publishers expect the tastes of young men in that age range to be.

As to fewer bikini shots of under-18's, this is a positive development.
