I've noticed in quite a few animes I've seen that when a character is making a face at another character (often girls to boys or other girls) they stick out their tongue and pull down their bottom eyelid. It just bothers me because I want to know why this is; is it a Japanese thing, like how American's stick their tongues out at each other?
and while we're on the topic of weird body-related things, why do boys' noses run in anime when they're attracted to girls? Just curious. Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------- why are there ann coulter ads at the top of the web page??? |

It's the Japanese equivalent of the F-word.I have seen a ton of anime and the funniest one is Pichu doing that to Pikachu in one of the movies. The 4kids narrator goes "whatever that means" It is a taunt or provoke, like slapping the bottom.
It is telling the audience the shock or desire the character wanted to see. It's usually the innocent character. It's to much for them to handle, blood rushes to head, sprays wildly. It probably came from manga. It is an easy way to draw nudity shock. |

Wait, what? I've always thought it was the same as sticking your tongue out - a childish reaction to something.
I read somewhere that Japanese mothers would sometimes tell their sons that if they looked at a pretty girl with impure thoughts, their nose would start bleeding so everyone would know. |

No kidding. That makes a lot of sense.I have heard different explanations of these things, from my sensei, over the years. |

That move is just a taunting move, really it has no meaning or any story behind it. I did that to my freind before when I was little. It is same as the first white guy I saw doing this move by putting his 2 hand across the groin area and yelled " suck it". I didn't know what the hell does that mean because asian dont taunt ppls by saying "suck my donky" all the time like the white guys.

It's like if you were to flip the bird at someone in japan,it doesn't have the same meaning. It doesn't mean "F you" it usually means "challenge".Though I wouldn't doubt it, if it has changed from the 80's.

The good old "Akanbe" (pronounced like "a-kan-beh") eh? Anyway, there you go. A gateway into the ANN lexicon list.

You sure, I'm pretty sure it isn't as harsh as F you anymore.

O_O;;;;;; Ummm... I would say "no". But you're welcome to try it with a Japanese native and see what happens.
As far as I know- -The "pulling the eyelids down" gesture is, indeed, equivilant to the "raspberry" or "bronx cheer"- a childish gesture of defiance. Some people stick out their tongues while doing it. -The nosebleed thing is a reaction to sudden, intense sexual desire. I don't know what the story is about it, but I think it relates to an old superstition that the accelerated blood flow thanks to the heart speeding up, coupled with the week skin inside the nose, causes the nosebleed. This doesn't happen in real life, but as a animation trope it endures. -The finger is the finger. As far as I know, it's always been the finger, going back at least to ancient Rome. Seriously. In Latin it was called the "digitus impudus"- the "impudent finger". |

Over the years, we have had a lot of threads dealing with akanbe (I wrote that Lexicon entry, btw) and other Japanese gestures. You might want to browse these golden oldies:

The "finger" was back whenthe french and english were having a war. And the Frecnh would cut off the fingers of the captured english so that they couldn't draw back arrows and do their archery. and So since the french had middle fingers they would stick them up at the english. Oh and thank you d.yaro for telling us the name of the gesture, its much appreciated. |

I'm sorry, but that's a myth. A few seconds of googling would have led you to Snopes.com, which specializes in debunking this sort of nonsense. - abunai |
