I hope Criterion release SAC on Blu-Ray, if they can. The last Blu-Rays had... problems.

You're not kidding! Not a comprehensive list, but after picking those BDs up for dirt cheap, I still felt surprised at the issues they had. From my experience: No chapter breaks on the blu ray. No signs/songs track. Only SDH subtitles. Slow, and almost eligible disc menus D1/Ep1: Jpn audio breaks in D2/Ep7: green distortion in first sec of OP D4/ep26: last ed bit crushed sound If Criterion did a blu ray release of SAC S1, 2nd Gig, and Solid State Society & did what they usually do in bringing back old extras, making new ones, etc - they'd be day 1 purchases. Curious to see if what they stream of SAC - will be it better quality than the current US blu rays, or will it be a port of the same masters & subtitles with the same issues. |

Wow. That's something. I just picked up the season one release a week or two ago because I wanted to watch it again. I'm glad I only paid about $8 for it. |

Whoa nice to see Criterion really jumping into the anime scene. Gunbuster: The Movie, huh. I think the original OVA would be a better idea to have since that has already been released, and have an English dub, and also the OVA works better IMO.
If Criterion is jumping on anime, maybe they'll do foreign-language TV dramas/miniseries in the future meaning they can have K-dramas since they're now treated like prestige TV. |

I would hold off hoping on Criterion releasing blu-rays for any of these. They have had the Ghost in the Shell movies for awhile, and they have been gradually spreading more into anime, adding movies like Redline. But I can't think of any that has gotten a physical criterion release lately.

Do they have a quality 4K or BD release for GiTS2: Innocence yet? The 4K for the original Mamoru Oshii movie is honestly an incredible transfer. |

I'll see how it works out before popping over to Criterion Channel. Retro Crush been my 'go to' for some retro anime that I missed out on (ie, Bubblegum Crisis & Bubblegum Crash, Dirty Pair, City Hunter) or never had the chance to finish (Samurai Troopers), Tubi does have a decent selection of anime titles in their library.

I hate to rain on anyone's parade, but people shouldn't expect much from this news. Criterion frequently cuts deals with other licensing companies to put films on the Channel, and they're always streaming-only and for a very short period of time (we're talking a few months). This isn't even the first time they've done anime: GitS 1995 has been on the channel before, as have the films of Satoshi Kon, Makoto Shinkai and, of all things, Tamala 2010. This is the first time they've done an anime TV series, as far as I know… so maybe they'll pick up more in the future… but even then I doubt it'd be anything particularly obscure. They don't go very far afield for their anime. Unless it's Tamala 2010 (great deal there, I guess).
I would love to see Criterion put these into The Collection and give them exemplary Blu-rays. but it's extremely unlikely.
They actually put Blossoms Shanghai, directed by Wong Kar-wai, on the Channel last month! |

Also hoping this somehow leads to a proper NA release, even if it isn't by Criterion directly.
Wouldn't happen to be using an un-modded panasonic player, would you? I've been thinking about importing that set, but I don't have a region free player, just a panasonic that sometimes is able to play region B titles, but it's not a guarantee. |

I picked it up, too, during the big Sentai sale a couple months ago. Haven't gotten around to watching it yet, but man, super disappointing to find out it has so many issues.
Yup, very unfortunately. Even outside of anime, they've got a number of "big" classic movies they released on DVD, but still haven't gotten around to doing BRD releases for. Though perhaps classic anime fans represent a bigger market than classic movie buffs? |

Nope, just some possibly-shady Chinese-developed player software that ignores my drive's region settings (and for all I know is sending all of my personal data back to the CCP). It's pretty janky and doesn't handle menus well, but hey it works. I know there are other more involved software methods that probably produce better results, but I haven't felt motivated to try those yet. |

There's an Amazon seller that mods Sony Blu-ray players (FHD and 4K) to be all-region for Blu-ray AND DVD.
