Anime Expo 2007
New License Roundup

by Mikhail Koulikov,

Despite occasional talk about some sort of slowdown in acquisition of new anime and manga titles for distribution in the US, by the conclusion of this year's Anime Expo, almost every one of the companies present at AX revealed new properties to the public.

Anime

Eight different anime companies (ADV, Bandai Entertainment, Bandai Visual USA, Funimation Entertainment, Geneon Entertainment, Manga Entertainment, Media Blasters and Nozomi Entertainment) revealed a total of forty-one new anime titles. This number includes both individual series, OVA's and feature films, as well as two second seasons of series already available in the US. Two of the forty-one anime have not yet been released in Japan, while seven have previously been released in English by another company.

Novels and artbooks

Anime and manga are two components of the Japanese popular culture triad that American audiences are by now fairly familiar with. Increasingly, though, licensors have also been working to translate into English and publish in the US the third part of the same triad – novels and artbooks. And while the list of Anime Expo 2007's novel/artbook licenses is much shorter than the lists for either anime and manga, it is important to remember that only two or three years ago, no Japanese novels or anime-related artbooks were available in English at all.
