I think the most interesting part of the Kirby video was Sakurai’s emphasis on there being no ability to view online rankings in time trial records, where you know right away after the first run how good you are relative to everyone.

I’ve played a few games that have this recently and have been able to place highly or set world records and there is admittedly a sense of satisfaction I get from knowing how good my gameplay is relative to the other 10 people or whatever that have bothered to try, but I wonder what kind of vibe this creates since it feels like being able to readily see this information could discourage people from even trying if it gets too sweaty.

(In the grand scheme of things, I actually normally assume that games I rate highly in normally lack competition and are niche since I’m an average player at best)

Some games are designed with competition in mind, but it seems like Sakurai is going out of his way to discourage this, so it’s interesting how people always take his games in certain directions and how this arises even without million dollar payouts.

I was at Level Up Expo in Vegas this year and that thing felt like Smash tournament more than anything even though there was more money in something like, say, Fatal Fury. You set foot in the room and it was obvious where the hype was even though I was surrounded by top FGC players in the area I was chilling in.

I think this deliberate direction is a testament to how strong Sakurai’s vision for games are since people want to take it to the next level even though he’s really just not going for this at all. There’s just a longevity there that is achieved because of how strong the entire package is outside of a player’s relative competitive ability.

I already have my favorite game this year with Ninja Gaiden 4 dropping, but this game has caught my attention a lot the more I see Sakurai talk about it.
