According to creator Yukito Kishiro, Aqua Knight is a remake of his 1988 manga-doujinshi Bugbuster.
Only three volumes of Aqua Knight were published before Kishiro placed it on hiatus to work on Battle Angel Alita: Last Order. Kishiro promised to finish Aqua Knight after the end of Last Order's run.
