Comic Zenon magazine announced in April that a television anime adaptation of the historical manga Gifū Dōdō!! Naoe Kanetsugu -Maeda Keiji Sake Gatari- had been green-lit. The manga follows the adventures of the real-life samurai Naoe Kanetsugu.

Hara first created the 1990-1993 manga Hana no Keiji -Kumo no Kanata ni- to adapt Keiichiro Ryu's novel about another samurai, Maeda Keiji. Hara and magazine editor Nobuhiko Horie then brought in manga artist Yūji Takemura to launch the spinoff Gifū Dōdō!! Naoe Kanetsugu -Maeda Keiji Tsuki-gatari- in Weekly Comic Bunch magazine in 2008. The three creators started the ongoing series Gifū Dōdō!! Naoe Kanetsugu -Maeda Keiji Sake-gatari- in Comic Zenon's inaugural issue in 2010.

The anime will premiere in Japan on July 2.
