The official website for the Gifū Dōdō!! Kanetsugu to Keiji television anime announced the main cast and staff on Saturday. Daisuke Namikawa (Fate/Zero, Aquarion Evol) will star as Naoe Kanetsugu, while Takuya Satō (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Cardfight!! Vanguard) will play Maeda Keiji.

(Historical Japanese names are listed family name first here, while modern names are listed family name last.)

Bob Shirohata (Hetalia, Hiiro no Kakera) is directing the series at Studio DEEN. Yasuhiro Imagawa (Shin Mazinger Shōgeki! Masaaki Kanan is in charge of character design, and KAZSIN will score the music. Makoto Shiraishi (DD Hokuto no Ken) will serve as program manager.

Comic Zenon magazine announced in April that a television anime adaptation of the historical manga Gifū Dōdō!! Naoe Kanetsugu -Maeda Keiji Sake Gatari- had been green-lit. The manga follows the adventures of the real-life samurai Naoe Kanetsugu.

Hara first created the 1990-1993 manga Hana no Keiji -Kumo no Kanata ni- to adapt Keiichirō Ryū's novel about another samurai, Maeda Keiji. Hara and magazine editor Nobuhiko Horie then brought in manga artist Yūji Takemura to launch the spinoff Gifū Dōdō!! Naoe Kanetsugu -Maeda Keiji Tsuki-gatari- in Weekly Comic Bunch magazine in 2008. The three creators started the ongoing series Gifū Dōdō!! Naoe Kanetsugu -Maeda Keiji Sake-gatari- in Comic Zenon's inaugural issue in 2010.

The anime will premiere in Japan on July 2.
