Just out of curiosity from Gai supporters, what makes him so unique to vote for him over Yasu even though judging from what's been said about him and his description, he sounds like an early take on Gurren Lagann's Kamina hearing about manliness, comic relief, inspirational figure and spoiler[early death]?

That's not really a wrong assessment, but it does make me ask: why shouldn't people vote for "an early take on Kamina"? Kamina was awesome.

I think this match is gonna come down to then whether or not folks are even familiar enough with the guy and even then, if they found him to be as memorable as you or his other supporters believe, kind of like the Komui Lee/ Hosaka match from Bracket B. It's likely gonna come down to personal preference. I just find that Yasu had more to contribute than the "early take on Kamina" vibe I'm getting off Gai's description and what I looked up on the guy.

I've thought from the beginning that this should - and will - be a close match between two ideal but dramatically different molds for supporting characters: Yasu plays a critical true support role in his series, while Gai is a defining and influential character. Both are really strong approaches for supporting roles. It's just a shame that this has to be decided in the first round, as this one has more of a third or fourth-round feel to it.

I generally copy and paste the list Key posts at the opening of each round but I have used other people's posts before, if it makes you feel any better (and you definitely aren't the first to do something that made this practice obvious Razz).

Autor, Princess Tutu
vs.
Walter C. Dornez, Hellsing franchise

Autor

Group D-3
Osono, Kiki’s Delivery Service
vs.
Minoru Kokubunji, Chobits

Minoru Kokubunji, the only reason why is because he's young, talented & more reliable

Group D-4
Jiriya, Naruto franchise
vs.
Kikyo, Inuyasha

Jiriya, i was going to vote for kikyo but when i think about it, i would rather go for Jiriya since he stands out more.

Group D-5
Meme Oshino, Bakemonogatari
vs.
Shuuei Ran, The Story of Saiunkoku

Shuuei Ran, A loyal warrior for the kingdom & its people. not only he's been a big help to the emperor but with the certain characters such Seiran, Shuurei & other important characters in the story

Group D-6
Tanda, Moribito – Guardian of the Spirit
vs.
Peter Spikes, Starship Operators

Tanda

Group D-7
Euphemia li Brittania, Code Geass
vs.
Mrs. Ichinose, Maison Ikkoku

Euphemia li Brittania
, she's been a great leader, helped the people of japan to gain hope for the country & for themselves. Even if she's so young, she managed to be more independent than i though she could be. So 10 out of 10 my vote goes for Euphemia li Brittania

Group D-8
Kaname Chidori, Koi Kaze
vs.
Patrick Colasour, Gundam 00

Patrick Colasour

Group D-9
Kyoji Ida, Millenium Actress
vs.

Ami Kawashima

Group D-11
Reira Serizawa, NANA
vs.
Osamu Akaishi, Cross Game

Osamu Akaishi, i dont know much about Osamu but im against on voting for Reira. the reason is that i dont feel like she fits the title of being a best supporting character. its not like i hate her or anything but my vote will go for Osamu Akaishi

Group D-12
Pedro, Excel Saga
vs.
The Colonel, Akira

Pedro

Group D-13
Akio Furukawa, Clannad franchise
vs.
Mr. Yotsuya, Maison Ikkoku

Akio Furukawa, Probably the most funny & entertaining guy in the series for me. He's more like a bridge for Nagisa & Tomoya in the way that he helped both of them to keep on moving in life.

Group D-14
Miwako Sakurada, Paradise Kiss
vs.
Seitaro Sakaki, Patlabor franchise

Seitaro Sakaki

Group D-15
Gai Daigoji/Jiro Yamada, Martian Successor Nadesico
vs.
Yasushi “Yasu” Takagi, NANA

Yasushi “Yasu” Takagi, he's probably more like the founder of their group Blackstones. he's outstanding & smart. Can't beat a thug-like guy who on the other hand is a lawyer too.

Group D-16
Minoru Shiraishi, Lucky Star
vs.
Wizardmon, Digimon franchise

Wizardmon, ill just go for him since Minoru doesnt seem to fit his role as a comic relief for the series.

She may not be a top contender, but she is important for the plot. After all Takumi created Trapnset for Layla because he wanted her to sing and become the ultimate singing princess. Layla’s voice is also a source of creative inspiration to Takumi, who writes songs for her and he definitely cares about his precious ‘angel of light’. Not to mention that she has relationships with the rest of characters that adds to drama.

Group D-1
Kuu, Haibane Renmei

Group D-2
Walter C. Dornez, Hellsing franchise
I would say that Walter is one of the unexpected characters in a story that relies mainly on style over substance. That is to say, he's not "deeper" than anybody else, but his story at least takes a surprising plot twist. He is definitely one of the most memorable butlers around.

Group D-3
Minoru Kokubunji, Chobits

Group D-4
Kikyo, Inuyasha

Group D-5
Meme Oshino, Bakemonogatari

Group D-6
Tanda, Moribito – Guardian of the Spirit
Tanda is a quite prominent, and very likeable character. I would like to see more of their relationship with Balsa... not sure if Production IG is willing to return to this though. Even though it was imo one of their best creations (and that's saying something).

Group D-7
Euphemia li Brittania, Code Geass
How can I not vote for her? Another character serving to highlight the awesomeness of Zero in one of the most memorable (and somewhat satisfying) moments of anime.

Group D-8
Kaname Chidori, Koi Kaze

Group D-9
Nagi, Time of Eve
Nagi the cool and somewhat mysterious bartender, of course. It takes quite something to run this sort of peaceful resistance initiative in what looks like a pretty oppressive state. Were this a full-fledged series, I'm sure she'd play an even more important role.

Group D-10
Ami Kawashima, Toradora!
Obvious pick, really. She is the girl that you'd wish the protagonist paid attention to. Personal preferences aside, she is one of those well thought-out and reasonable female characters that are quite hard to come by.

Group D-11
Reira Serizawa, NANA
vs.
Osamu Akaishi, Cross Game
I confess that at moments like this I feel completely lost. How should I distinguish two characters from series that I haven't seen nor have any interest in seeing (sports or music aren't really my favourite themes)? Wiki helps... but I don't feel that my vote is fully justified. Regardless of how awkward it feels, I have to pick one... Akaishi sounds like he plays a more important role (childhood friend), so I'll just go with him.

Group D-12
Pedro, Excel Saga

Group D-13
Akio Furukawa, Clannad franchise

Group D-14
Seitaro Sakaki, Patlabor franchise

Group D-15
Gai Daigoji/Jiro Yamada, Martian Successor Nadesico
This vote is more about his lasting legacy, his imprint, so to speak. Can't help but smile any time he gets mentioned, too Razz

Group D-16
Minoru Shiraishi, Lucky Star

I have voted for "Yasu" from NANA because I believe he is one of the best supporting characters in NANA. He's the cool guy, but he's an integral character that really keeps Nana together. Without Yasu, Nana would not be able to survive and the story can't continue. He's the bridge between Nana and her boyfriend.

However I don't know too much about Gai as I haven't seen the series.

Walter

Group D-3
Osono, Kiki’s Delivery Service

Minoru Kokubunji, Chobits

This is a difficult decision because I have not seen Chobits and can only go on the character summary, while Kiki is maybe my favorite Miyazaki work. I'm going to go ahead and vote for Osono because I think she's a great character and probably deserving of advancing, but it's not without some reservations.

Kaname Chidori

Group D-9
Kyoji Ida, Millenium Actress
vs.
Nagi, Time of Eve

Comments made by others voting for her and the strong guide entry have led me to vote for Nagi. The discussion of her character has also made me want to see Time of Eve, even though this is the first time I have heard of it.

Group D-10
Ami Kawashima, Toradora!
vs.
Norman Burg, The Big O

Again I am being swayed by the comments of others to vote for the character from the show I haven't seen over the character from the show I have. I am voting for Ami.

Group D-11
Reira Serizawa, NANA
vs.
Osamu Akaishi, Cross Game

Osamu Akaishi

Group D-12
Pedro, Excel Saga
vs.
The Colonel, Akira

As much as I dislike Excel Saga overall, Pedro was one of its few bright spots.

Group D-13
Akio Furukawa, Clannad franchise
vs.
Mr. Yotsuya, Maison Ikkoku

One of the coolest anime dads ever (in his completely dorky way): Akio

Group D-14
Miwako Sakurada, Paradise Kiss
vs.
Seitaro Sakaki, Patlabor franchise

I haven't seen any compelling arguments on either side of this one so far, and I'm not familiar with either character. I hate to have to vote in such a close contest with so little knowledge, but I guess I'll go off what I consider to be the more convincing guide entry and vote for Seitaro Sakaki.

Group D-15
Gai Daigoji/Jiro Yamada, Martian Successor Nadesico
vs.
Yasushi “Yasu” Takagi, NANA

Though I consider Yasu to be a strong contender, I'm voting for Gai without hesitation. I like what Olliff said about Gai having the greatest presence to screen time ratio. For a character that appears in such a small part of his series, he has an immense impact.

As far as the comparisons being made to Kamina, while I don't disagree that there are similarities between the two characters, Gai gives us an additional level of depth that Kamina doesn't have. If this were a vote between Yasu and Kamina, I would be voting for Yasu. Gai is, at the same time, a Kamina type character and also a parody of that type of character. spoiler[Unlike Kamina, Gai doesn't die valiantly battling the enemy, fighting for his friends and what he believes in. He is quietly assassinated in the dark because he is in the wrong place at the wrong time by a weasel of a character who is supposed to be on his side but is acting for his own self interests above all else. His death is pointless, undramatic, and shockingly anti-climactic. He has no heroic final moment of glory to inspire those around him to greater heights, he is just gone. His absurd death serves as a parallel to the the greater absurdity of the war they are all fighting, and the injustice of his death serves as motivation for the crew of the Nadesico, even those who initially disliked him, as they realize that Gai was fighting for his ideals above all else while others in greater positions of power and authority have much less pure motives.]

While Gai is the over the top, wanting to be heroic, fighting for his ideals kind of character, he is also an example of how the ideals he is fighting for are often warped and twisted and used by those in power to serve their personal interests. As the series progresses, we find that the war the Nadesico crew is fighting is not at all what it seems and characters that before saw Gai as a ridiculous and annoying person come to appreciate the almost naive purity of his motives as they begin to see just low lacking the motivations of so many of the people around them are.

Group D-16
Minoru Shiraishi, Lucky Star
vs.
Wizardmon, Digimon franchise

I was all ready to vote for Minoru after reading the guide entries. I don't know who wrote the entry for Wizardmon, but for someone who is completely unfamiliar with Digimon the guide entry is almost unintelligible as it uses so much language specific to the show that I think you would have to have seen it to make much sense of it. Subsequent comments by others have convinced me to vote for Wizardmon, but someone who knows the character may want to submit a revised guide entry for future rounds if s/he (it?) ends up advancing.

Oh dear. I hadn't seen his guide before but yeah, it's definitely not accessible to someone who hasn't seen the series (which is of course completely backwards since people who have seen the series shouldn't need to read the guide as much as those who haven't). It's been awhile since I watched the series but I could probably de-jargon-ify the entry enough for it to make sense to none Digimon fans.

I'm finally getting my votes in for this round! The new rule actually kept me out of the last round, since each bracket contained a character that I wasn't familiar enough with to provide a valid reason for voting. This round however, has several match-ups that I can provide reasons for.

Group D-1
Kuu, Haibane Renmei
vs.
Pero, Metropolis

Winner: Kuu

Group D-2
Autor, Princess Tutu
vs.
Walter C. Dornez, Hellsing franchise

Winner: Walter C. Dornez

Group D-3
Osono, Kiki’s Delivery Service
vs.
Minoru Kokubunji, Chobits

Winner: Osono

Group D-4
Jiriya, Naruto franchise
vs.
Kikyo, Inuyasha

Winner: Jiraiya

While Kikyo is a strong contender, I'm giving this match to Jiraiya,as I feel he had a much stronger presence and overall impact on the other characters in the show, particularly Naruto himself.

Group D-5
Meme Oshino, Bakemonogatari
vs.
Shuuei Ran, The Story of Saiunkoku

Winner: Meme Oshino

Group D-6
Tanda, Moribito – Guardian of the Spirit
vs.
Peter Spikes, Starship Operators

Winner: Tanda

Group D-7
Euphemia li Brittania, Code Geass
vs.
Mrs. Ichinose, Maison Ikkoku

Winner: Euphimia Li Brittania

Group D-8
Kaname Chidori, Koi Kaze
vs.
Patrick Colasour, Gundam 00

Winner: Kaname Chidori

Group D-9
Kyoji Ida, Millenium Actress
vs.
Nagi, Time of Eve

Winner: Nagi

Group D-10
Ami Kawashima, Toradora!
vs.
Norman Burg, The Big O

Winner: Ami Kawashima

Group D-11
Reira Serizawa, NANA
vs.
Osamu Akaishi, Cross Game

Winner: Osamu Akaishi

Group D-12
Pedro, Excel Saga
vs.
The Colonel, Akira

Winner: The Colonel

Group D-13
Akio Furukawa, Clannad franchise
vs.
Mr. Yotsuya, Maison Ikkoku

Winner: Akio Furukawa

Group D-14
Miwako Sakurada, Paradise Kiss
vs.
Seitaro Sakaki, Patlabor franchise

Winner: Miwako Sakurada

Group D-15
Gai Daigoji/Jiro Yamada, Martian Successor Nadesico
vs.
Yasushi “Yasu” Takagi, NANA

Winner: Yasushi "Yasu" Takagi

This was definitely the hardest vote of this round. Even though Gai's brief appearance and sudden death had a long-lasting impact on the crew, Yasu's level headedness, maturity and continued guidance to the rest of the band members makes him a much stronger supporting character.

Group D-16
Minoru Shiraishi, Lucky Star
vs.
Wizardmon, Digimon franchise

Winner: Minoru Shiraishi

Looking at my score in the mini-game, I'm definitely feeling a bit out-classed by the rest of the players in the game. I guess that's what happens when you know only about 1/3 of the characters and have to choose purely by guessing!

Um, I never said you had to know both, just that those cases are the preference. You could also make an argument in a case where you only know one and are particularly passionate about supporting that character.

Here is some last minute voting.

Group D-1
Kuu, Haibane Renmei
vs.
Pero, Metropolis

In Haibane Renmei, there is so much symbolism represented by the Haibane characters. Kuu is not exempt from this. Much of the anime is shrouded in mystery especially the concept of the "Day of Flight." To make my explanation short, spoiler[Kuu's Day of Flight] elicits a huge wave of emotion from all the characters. Kuu's spoiler["death/redemption"] is an important element which helps the other characters intrepret their purpose in "Old Home" and the town of Glie.

My vote goes to: Kuu.

Group D-2
Autor, Princess Tutu
vs.
Walter C. Dornez, Hellsing franchise

My vote goes to: Autor.

Group D-3
Osono, Kiki’s Delivery Service
vs.

Group D-6
Tanda, Moribito – Guardian of the Spirit
vs.
Peter Spikes, Starship Operators

My vote goes to: Tanda.

Group D-7
Euphemia li Brittania, Code Geass
vs.
Mrs. Ichinose, Maison Ikkoku

"Euphie" may have naive beliefs and ideals but she has a good heart. Despite her tragic spoiler[death accidently caused by Lelouch's Geass], all she ever wanted was to create a world where she, Lelouch, and Nunnally can live in together peacefully.

Despite all the nagativity caused by her choosing Suzuka as her Knight and her plans of implementing the Special Administrative Zone of Japan, she geneuinely wanted to at least make Japan a better for the Japanese and her half-siblings.

Her spoiler[death] also sets up Lelouch's overall plan in R2. Lelouch, out of atonement for his part in Euphemia's spoiler[death, plans to shed even more blood. This is so that people will not remember her for the massacre of the Japanese in the SAZ and her "Massacre Princess" title. Blood shed begets more blood shed.]

My vote goes to: Euphemia li Britannia.

Group D-8
Kaname Chidori, Koi Kaze
vs.

My vote goes to: Patrick Colasour.

This set of votes has come later than what I expected, to be sure, but still earlier than what was once the usual for me.

Group D-1
Kuu, Haibane Renmei
vs.
Pero, Metropolis

Voting for: Kuu

Group D-2
Autor, Princess Tutu
vs.
Walter C. Dornez, Hellsing franchise

Voting for: Walter C. Dornez

I would argue that Walter wasn't the most important supporting character in Hellsing -even if we weren't forced to go only by what has been animated so far- but he nevertheless stood out more than most as a human with an impressive set of abilities, hints of a potentially interesting background and a likable personality. On the other hand, Autor's importance was technically greater in the grand scheme of things within his own show but, as a viewer, I found that he didn't leave a lasting impression on me.

Group D-3
Osono, Kiki’s Delivery Service
vs.
Minoru Kokubunji, Chobits

Voting for: Osono

Group D-4
Jiriya, Naruto franchise
vs.
Kikyo, Inuyasha

Voting for: Kikyo

Not much of a fan as far as either franchise is concerned. I've barely seen a single episode of Naruto, if that much, but going by whatever limited percentage of Inuyasha I watched and what I can recall about the story in general, Kikyo was absolutely relevant the plot and something of a tragic figure given the nature of her predicament.

Group D-7
Euphemia li Brittania, Code Geass
vs.
Mrs. Ichinose, Maison Ikkoku

Voting for: Euphemia li Brittania

Not surprisingly, this was a simple choice for me. On the surface, Euphemia looked like little more than a Lacus Clyne (of Gundam SEED fame) copycat but, thankfully, managed to develop an identity of her own. She had the will to stand up for herself instead of accepting her assigned role as a puppet and represented what seemed to be a viable third alternative to both Lelouch's cynical rebellion and Suzaku's misguided collaboration. It's easy to dismiss her as foolish and naive or say she was all talk, but that contrasts with the fact she actually took action and was prepared to take risks instead of preferring to be an observer.

While the short term resolution of the ensuing scenario can rightfully be considered contrived or outright disappointing, in my humble opinion there is a clear "before" and "after" distinction. Euphemia significantly influenced the overall direction of the story through her effect on the mindset of the characters involved, directly or indirectly, for better and for worse. If anything, the show's second season could have used more characters like her, figuratively speaking, and maybe it would have if certain external factors didn't alter the equation...but I suppose that's a different debate.

Group D-8
Kaname Chidori, Koi Kaze
vs.
Patrick Colasour, Gundam 00

Voting for: Kaname Chidori

I'm not familiar with Koi Kaze, to be honest, so my vote could definitely change in later rounds...but the available arguments and the guide entry are far more impressive than anything I could say about poor Patrick, who is limited to being sympathetic comedic relief and -even then- not a particularly hilarious or memorable example in my humble opinion.

Kyoji Ida, Millenium Actress

Nagi, Time of Eve

Ami Kawashima, Toradora!

Reira Serizawa, NANA

Osamu Akaishi, Cross Game

Group D-12
Pedro, Excel Saga
vs.
The Colonel, Akira

Voting for: Pedro

I only liked certain episodes of Excel Saga, all in all, but don't really have anything to say against Pedro in particular. His predicament and a fair amount of the events of his sad tale stand out among the hilarious parts of the show. Even though the Colonel is one of the more memorable characters in Akira, I don't think the movie made the best possible use of him in the long run. Probably one more reason to check out the manga, I guess?

Akio Furukawa, Clannad franchise

Mr. Yotsuya, Maison Ikkoku

Miwako Sakurada, Paradise Kiss

Seitaro Sakaki, Patlabor franchise

Group D-15
Gai Daigoji/Jiro Yamada, Martian Successor Nadesico
vs.
Yasushi “Yasu” Takagi, NANA

Voting for: Gai Daigoji/Jiro Yamada

Going against my first impressions, I was this close to supporting Yasu after reading some of the previous posts. However, ManOfRust has done an excellent job of summing up what makes Gai -and his role in the series- so unlike Kamina. I have to wholeheartedly agree.

Because, as a matter of fact, I'll go ahead say that I've never been a big fan of the Gurren Lagann character in question, vastly preferring Simon instead. I know the actual debate is neither here nor there, but I suppose that much should stay on the record.

Group D-16
Minoru Shiraishi, Lucky Star
vs.
Wizardmon, Digimon franchise

Voting for: Wizardmon

Shouldn't have brought up the Kamina resemblance. Rolling Eyes

Still don't see what makes Gai so appealing, even when I did get an opportunity to see the first two episodes of Nadesico just yesterday. A character doomed to failure and being an annoying mecha anime otaku just doesn't scream funny to me while I got more glee out of Kamina's reckless actions and him actually succeeding in Gurren Lagann.
