As I mentioned in a different thread, there are 7 sequels I'll be watching (Call of the Night 2, DAN DA DAN 2, Dr. Stone: Science Future, Kaiju No. 8 second season, My Dress-Up Darling 2, Sakamoto Days 2, and Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun 3) and then 45 other titles I have identified to be sampled.

Does that mean I'll be watching 52 titles to completion? No. No, it does not. First, except in very rare cases, I don't chase titles that don't get a legit NA release. Last season that struck 8 titles off my sample list right off the bat. Then I've got samplers I'm pretty sure I won't stick with, but I don't want them nagging at my consciousness in a "but what if I'm missing something good???" way so I'll at least check them out. Those drops tend to happen fairly quickly.

Then inevitably there will be shows that I just don't jell with or don't like or become bored with, whatever. This past Spring season I dropped 23 of those titles.

All of which is to say I'm not particularly daunted by my 52-title sample menu...

It's certainly the most sequel heavy season I've seen in a good while, maybe ever. My sequels are Rascal Does Not Dream of Santa Claus, My Dress Up Darling 2, Kaiju #8 2, A Couple of Cuckoos 2, Dandadan 2, Rising of the Shield Hero 4, and I guess Reborn as a Vending Machine.

The new show I've got the highest hopes for personally is The Water Magician.

Oops, I mis-filed Rascal. It should be on my sequel list, not completely new show list. There's too many titles I'm looking forward to to mention, so I'll just note the far fewer I'm pretty dubious about, but "want to make sure" (note: I'm only listing titles that have a confirmed platform): Betrothed to My Sister's Ex, Dealing with the Mikadono Sisters is a Breeze, New Saga, Private Tutor to the Duke's Daughter, Ruri Rocks, Scooped Up by a S-Rank Adventurer, Turkey! -Time to Strike-, and, With Vengeance, Sincerely, Your Broken Saintess. 8 titles in total.

Judging by the first three volumes of the novel, the Water Magician should be excellent. The first half of the first volume of the novel was a very slow burn, but it picks up thereafter. It will be interesting to see how the anime handles it.

The Secrets of the Silent Witch is the show I'm most looking forward to. I'm six volumes into the novel version and it is excellent. Imagine a main character who actually shows growth during the period covered. Lots of skullduggery in high places. Highly Recommended.

Summer is really going to be the season that forces me to be more critical and actually drop shows that I am not invested enough in. Not doing so would mean a 40 plus watching list and that is just not feasible nor pleasant.

Noted, sir..

Blood - I'd add The Shy Hero and the Assassin Princess, Nyaight of the Living Cat, and Hotel Inhumans to that second list myself.

Smurky - you could try the inverse of the 3 episode rule, where if an anime you started out liking annoys or bores you more than entertains you for 3 episodes, drop it.

Normally, something like the Shy Hero would be on my questionable list but the fact that his three female party members want to assassinate him is juuuuuust enough of a wrinkle to raise my hopes a bit. Although it also has the whiff of a premise that is unsustainable. As for Nyaight and Hotel Inhumans - straight up looking forward to hose.

I'll be very curious about smurky turkey's summer experience. Will the smurkster finally be able to overcome his attachment to ani-meh??? Stay tuned!

And glad to see the you'll be checking out a couple of titles, Alan45! I know that's a rarity for you these days.

I like to see what they are doing with shows where I read the source material. It tends to get iffy. Apothecary Diaries has been done excellently but Too Perfect Saint turned out to be a disappointment.

Lets see...I generally start with 8ish and lose 2/3 as the season roles on. Ones I'm looking at:

Dan Da Dan: I really liked the first season. I don't particularly expect that to change. Only question is whether I watch dub or sub, honestly.

Dress Up Darling: I liked the first season a lot...but its a rom com. I get a bit surly when these start lacking any forward progression for the duo. Maybe it'll avoid that fate. Maybe not.

Kaiju No.8: Might save this to binge, but will almost certainly watch it.

Shy Hero: As Blood- mentioned, the premise seems interesting, but unsustainable. But I'll watch episode 1, anyway.

Hotel Inhumans, Gachiakuta, and Clevatess all seem somewhat interesting, but 1/2 will absolutely get dropped. They all seem to be darker stories- which I like, but like better in moderation.

And I'll watch Water Magician and Silent Witch too. The synopsis doesn't seem particularly intriguing, but good execution can go all the way.

Smurky, I would advise against trying to cut down on anime with duct tape over your eyes or shocking yourself with one of those electric dog collars every time you reach for a remote. Just in case you get to that point.

B-dragon – in a perfect world, I’d have two anime I liked every weekday, and three or four that I liked on Saturdays and Sundays.

Blood - I’ll be trying them out and hoping for the best, but the reason those particular three anime are included on my “Hopeful but somewhat dubious list” are thusly:

The Shy Hero and the Assassin Princess looks like a fun first episode, but like you said, the joke will be hard to maintain over an entire season. And maybe I’m wrong and they won’t try to counterbalance it with the dynamic of the assassins gradually falling for the hero they’re assigned to kill in a fairly predictable manner…and even if they do, it might still be fun if they handle it in competent mid-tier fashion. But it’s a toss up IMHO.

Hotel Inhumans could also be good, and my biggest reservation is that I didn’t enjoy the John Wick spin-off The Continental, and there's a bit of an aversion therapy thing going on. There’s also a real possibility that I won’t be rooting for any of the characters of the anime all that enthusiastically, which isn't a dealbreaker but has to be handled delicately. .

And Nyaight of the Living Cats? [Cover your eyes, Alan45] If they honestly treated it like a zombie type apocalypse and had people blowing the obnoxiously adorable cats away with shotguns and feeding them into wood chippers and such, I’d be all kinds of psyched up for it. But the satire looks like it’s learning toward a fluffy anime with bells and whistles.

I had a mini-epiphany around The Shy Hero and the Assassin Princesses today. It seems a few of us have doubts about how its premise can be satisfyingly stretched over a cours. However, I suddenly realized that I don't really care. Let's say I watched the first four episodes, basically enjoy them, but then my interest begins to flag, I can just drop the show AND still think fondly of the episodes I did enjoy. My completionist OCD will not be triggered. I actually experienced that with a few Spring shows like Zatsu Tabi and mono. I watched a number of episodes for both, enjoyed them... then realized I was "full" and didn't need to see any more. For me, this is a change from the days of when I dropped a show, I'd feel like I had picked poorly and "lost" because I wasn't going to watch the show to completion.

New motto: enjoy for as long as the good times roll and, if need be, say goodbye without regret, appreciating what you managed to hang around for.

I think the only completionist hang-up I have is after an anime is over. I love rewatching anime where I enjoyed the entire experience - I've rewatched Negative Positive Angler and Makeine since they finished up, for example - and I always rewatch the entire season even if I take a week to do it.

I judge new anime by their singular episodes as I'm watching them progress, but I judge old anime by their cumulative experience.

I've never rewatched any of Darling in the Franxx even though I really liked it up until the last five or so episodes. And I'll probably never rewatch an episode of Quality Assurance in Another World even though I liked the show a lot all the way up until the last episode.

Given how badly some shows fumble the ending I can not blame you. There are plenty of shows that make me want to do a re-watch and then I remember the stinker final few episodes or the ending that makes the whole season feel limp.

Welp, I've been doing something over the last little while that I don't usually do. And no, I'm not talking about being a nice person, wise guy/gal. I've gone through and watched all the trailers and checked out the visuals for the 44 shows I'm planning to sample (or at least the ones that get a legit release). I have to say that in virtually every case doing so increased my interest in the show. Normally, I avoid trailers because 80 to 90 percent of the time they don't have english subtitles. Anyway, I'm pretty stoked for the summer season. Here are the titles that are particularly piquing my interest:

Bad Girl (TV)
CITY The Animation (TV) - KyoAni's first non-sequel anime in 6 years
Clevatess (TV)
Dekin no Mogura: The Earthbound Mole (TV)
Detectives These Days Are Crazy! (TV)
Gachiakuta (TV) - a BONES production, woo-hoo!
Hell Teacher: Jigoku Sensei Nube (TV 2025)
Hotel Inhumans (TV)
Necronomico and the Cosmic Horror Show (TV)
Nukitashi the Animation (TV)
Nyaight of the Living Cat (TV)
Onmyo Kaiten Re:Birth Verse (TV)
Secrets of the Silent Witch (TV)
(The) Summer Hikaru Died (TV)
Takopi's Original Sin (TV)
Tougen Anki (TV)
Uglymug, Epicfighter (TV)
Virgin Punk (TV) - directed by Yasuomi Umetsu of Kite fame
(The) Water Magician (TV)
With You and the Rain (TV)

Somehow I don't think I have to worry about being exposed to harmful UV rays this summer...
