Masterpieces Rating
Angel Beats! (TV) Masterpiece
Angel Beats has an Amazing story line, amazing characters, clever writing, and sparkling animation. It also dominates with concentrated character depth. This depth is thorough and in that every episode is at minimum enjoyable. The show has a well ballanced and enjoyable ending unlike most Anime, and talks a lot about God and Love which I feel is important for everyone to think about! ***I do have to say though I watched this in Japanese. The English Dub is O.K., I've heard worst but it really weighs down a great show. The main character, Yuri's new voice just doesn't fit. Her characters voice was more athorative, higher pitched, and angrier at times.
Another (TV) Excellent
Are You Afraid of The Dark? No I mean the T.V. show. That's what this reminds me of. The artwork is amazing, as the characters are dark yet flashy! The voices are good (though I haven't heard the dub). The story line is nice and creepy, and doesn't move too . I can't give it 5 stars because the story doesn't seem super original, yet it's original enough. I have only seen 3 episodes. Will update!
Baccano! (TV) Masterpiece
Truly unique. Fast paced, and engulfing. Buccano has a well created non-linear plot, and phenomenal characters! What stands out the most is that it's set in the 1940's!
BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad (TV) Excellent
Beck is sweet and strange. It's similar to Boondocks as far as style and animation (and it's very bloody). It leans on the more avant guard artistic side of Anime. A very real tone is displayed, and some very unique characters appear. The fact that it's about a male music group for once, rather than female, adds to it's personality. On the other hand I'm turned off by the style of animation big time (that's just me) and I have a feeling it gets more explicit in other ways than it already is, and I'm not a fan of that. Also I'm lost as far as where the story is going. I'll have to watch more to give a better review. Does it have a message? What is the point of Beck? But overall this moves and seems like a great watch if this is the style your into it would be well worth it to try to get in to this!
Ben-To (TV) Excellent
Ben-To is fun. This unlicensed anime takes some simple and fun ideas and makes it just that. They fight over getting the Ben-To sale at the supermarket. The series evolves and doesn't disappoint. I haven't seen the whole thing though. Hopefully it doesn't drag out too long, and sticks to simplicity.
Blood+ (TV) Masterpiece
Revamped by excitement! Blood + is an exciting Vampire story that contains awesome animation, and action. I haven't seen enough of it yet but this is probably one of the coolest Anime ever!
CANAAN (TV) Excellent
CANAAN is an intriguing sequel to a video game series. I didn't know that when I started the series but that's cool that there's a back-story. Not playing the game only makes CANAAN more interesting. CANAAN is about two news reporters Maria, and Minoru. Maria is a photographer in training and Minoru is her agitated teacher. They collide paths with Canaan, Alphard, and Yun Yun who all have one dark secret in common. Yun Yun and Maria are a fun female characters who really add "light" to the somewhat dark story of SNAKE, a deep rooted terrorist organization as Canaan furthers that with her dark yet innocent personality and amazing fighting skills. Canaan sucks you in and never entirely loses focus. The plot holds together a very strong and interesting story line. On top of that it has a nice dynamic range of characters, and you get to know them all in profound ways. The animation is very eye popping here, showing some of the best action Animation I 've ever seen! The negatives are just that the original, and English Dub both have some flawed voice parts but it's still a really easy to get over. I would say the English dub is better than the original Japanese overall. This is because Minoru's voice sound way too out a place in Japanese apposed to that of Canaan's voice in the English version which is only unfitting on occasion. Another negative is the possible Fan Service Lesbian activity. A good thing is that it's reserved and there are no sex scenes (at least that I know of from watching the English version). I'm not a FAN of Fan Service and 90% of the time any sex scene between any body is just tha,t so I try to shy away from it all together. What I'm trying to say is you would think that this is the reason for the Lesbian relationship but it seems less likely as the show goes on. It seems like it is more realistic in a way and in the end it seems like the characters could just be really good friends, and that the director just wanted to give that Lesbian vibe. I'm not sure. The point here is that it's tolerable overall and doesn't ruin.
Chihayafuru (TV) Masterpiece
Chihayafuru is about Chihaya a girl with no talents and nothing to do. She feels sorry for Arata a classmate. They discover a beautifully addicting card game together. This is unexpectedly good! Why? I'm not really sure. The animation is amazing, the story is easy to follow and interesting. But why it stands out? If I had to "show my hand" it's the card game! The game is astonishingly cool, and when I watch this it makes me want to play it! To add to the shows emotional complexity this show is about bullying, a big problem in all countries, especially China and Japan. It's good to learn about this, and that it's a very dangerous thing, if you watch Chihya you should compliment it with the documentary "Please Vote for Me" about this same topic.
Clannad (TV) Masterpiece
Clannad is a truly unique emotional mystery. It has exciting characters and haunting themes, in a romantic way. Need to see more!
Claymore (TV) Excellent
Claymore hacks up the HD screen like a horror movie, it has a creepy vibe. The main character, Claire is drawn amazingly, and there are well used special effects. Despite this Anime being very medieval its not confusing. The relationships in Clay are well done and unique, they work heavily yet aren't too much, for those that hate sappiness. Unfortunately this isn't a masterpiece here's why; The supporting characters dub is annoying. The animation that doesn't focus on the main character's is weird. The soundtrack is repetitive and sometimes this works. I've seen this work before in films but I would like to hear something different here.
Corpse Princess: Aka (TV) Excellent
What I've seen of corpse Princess is good. The animation is above par, especially during the fight scenes, sometimes with Anime's it's the opposite so def plus, and the plot is well written and up to date. Their is a smidgen of fan service but it doesn't ruin. I wouldn't even call it fan service necessarily. What's the best thing about this?! Guns. If you're sick of swords like me, and don't want to watch the extreme fan-service of Highschool of The Dead watch this!
Darker than Black (TV) Excellent
Darker than black is an all around action, sci-fi Anime. Need to see more of this!
Death Note (TV) Masterpiece
This is one of the best films ever. What makes Death Note stand out is that it seems like it would be extremely boring but it's insanely addictive, comparatively on par with Sodoku, Tetris, and Lost. The only thing that sucks about it is that some of the latter characters, and it might just be the English dub.
Durarara!! (TV) Excellent
Durarara!! is just as good as it's older brother Buccano, although this moves slower. Slow is a good thing because this brings clarity to the script. Yet if it moved faster it would be a masterpiece. Buccano's only weakness was that it was too fast, making it confusing. The creators must have known this and slowed Durarara! in a reaction to Buccano. So the trick is perfect balance, Buc is too confusing (maybe cause of speed but not necessarily), and Dura is a little slower but easier to follow. Now if the creators could create their next Anime in between those two. Either way both of these are Classics.)
Eden of the East (TV) Excellent
Eden is a strange one. Ok so let's say if someone wanted to make a sexual-like Anime that some how didn't offend as much as Fanservice, or Lolita, but still gave that vibe....welcome to Eden of the East. One word, "Johnnies" This has a great modern story, and good Animation. The main characters are very modern and fun they're not too over the top but very authentic.
El Cazador de la Bruja (TV) Excellent
Think if Meryl Stryfe and Milly Thompson from Trigun had their own Anime. This is it. But this isn't as boring as Trigun in which you kind of get lost and you eventually lose interest because nothing new happens, in this film just when you think it's getting slow something happens. It's done very well. The western setting amongst modern day is interesting, and the dub is good enough that it doesn't interfere. There is a Moe character that kind of get's under my skin but she isn't around too often. This would be a Masterpiece it had more explicit fight scenes as in realism or maybe if the animation was a little bit darker or more realistic.
Ergo Proxy (TV) Excellent
What I like about Ergo Proxy is that it's dark. By dark I mean mysteriously captivating. It's very Sci-Fi in a futuristic sort of way but not too cartoony. It's a classic mystery, and reminds me a little bit of Wolf's Rain which is my favorite Anime. The main character is awesome and the robots remind me of Star War's Robot's. The reason this isn't a masterpiece but only is excellent is because of GOD LIKE SYNDROME but this is normal for most animes.
Fairy Tail (TV) Excellent
Fairy Tail is rad! To sum IT up quickly it's a mix between Inu Yasha, One Piece, Final Fantasy, and Dragon Ball. The only downside (upside to some) is that there's a small to moderate amount of fan service. At times some things might ruin the show for women, younger viewers, and conservative Anime watchers like myself. But at least it's somewhat tolerable unlike Anime like The Melancholy of Haruhi. IN General this is pretty much a perfect Anime besides the fan service. THE DUB is great, the action's great, the characters are all unique and the show flows smoothly and isn't confusing. This is based on the first two episodes. The art style sits well in between this style of action comedy and comments it perfectly
Fractale (TV) Excellent
In this show the civilization is living out life in a computer Avatar system. This creates all kind of controversy that involves Dopples (short for Doppleganger) which are Avatars, and there owners confronting the subject of morality with this "Fractale" system as they call it. But it's much deeper than that...years have gone by and now there is a revolution, and the lead Character Clain is in the middle of it. That is where Fractale starts. What I love about this Anime is that Square Soft got involved and it seems like their presence influenced decency in this Anime. Yutaka the director also worked on The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, and so did some other beneficiaries. Which made me nervous at first. I am not a fan of Obscene Anime's. Despite some strange sexual jokes this Anime is not that obscene. The characters in Fractale are great. There are many strong Male and Female characters, and each Character seems to develop fine so far. The story line has even become more interesting as the episodes go on. One thing that bothers me is the Animation, but it isn't terrible I just wish it was a little bit more detailed and less cartoony colorful. But it works well overall. The Japenese version also has very good music and voice acting which is a plus and the moe character is one of the least annoying I've heard. Overall this is one of my favorite new Anime's. It has surprises, great characters, great writing, good music and acting, and crosses genres. What more could you ask for? **********In comparison;************ *Frac! No this ain't Battlestar Gallactica! But it IS kinda funny that the plot is similar and that the first four letters are BG's famous four letter word! Fractale is also similar to Summer Wars. It's a more detailed and less pretentious Summer Wars as far as the story goes with Avatars and all. Overall it's superior. It doesn't get boring and it contains more interesting characters and plots.
Fruits Basket (TV 1/2001) Masterpiece
(The) Future Diary (TV) Very good
Also called Future Diary Yuki is a normal teenager who gets sucked into a game of life or death against 11 other people. He becomes friends, foes, with some of these other contestants most notably a girl named Yuno who really helps make the show over the top in a good way. The story is complex and dark, but also happy and simple. Future Diary just makes it as a Masterpiece in my opinion it's truely done well, it's a lot of fun, and it's not too long (13 episodes).
(The) Girl Who Leapt Through Time (movie) Masterpiece
Guilty Crown (TV) Masterpiece
WoW.
Guilty Crown has truly fearsome characters.
An inspiring dynamic and complex musical score
An above par story line
Amazingly ground shaking action sequences
And most important, breath taking animation!!! The details in the characters hair, and the beautiful backdrops are better than most
The problem? Weired Echhi fanservice. Such a shame. With a lot of new Animes holding back on this it's sad that Guilty Crown didn't follow suit, I could have tolerated a little but not this much. This would be my favorite new Anime if it wasn't for this!
Haibane Renmei (TV) Excellent
Heaven's Memo Pad (TV) Excellent (dub & sub)
His and Her Circumstances (TV) Excellent
This is great. This is the closest thing we could find to Fruits Basket. The reason this is not a "masterpiece" is because the main character can be a little annoying, and their should be more character development. They should have take out some annoying and sprinkled in something else reputable or interesting like developing a 3rd party character, but they didn't. Don't get me wrong though, this is still fun too watch. His and Her has a dreamy overall vibe. The drawings sometime suffer but this is made up for with Batman style cut scenes (think almost early 1960's Batman). The father is a perv, they should have replaced him with a cool cat.
Hunter × Hunter (TV 2011)
Hunter x Hunter is a remake. It's a very good remake. It has that classic Hayao Miyazaki feel but also has a little bit of One Piece flair. It works well. All the characters are balanced, and interesting. I also love how it's about pirates but in a classic way. It reminds me of One Piece the first time I watched it. Hopefully this won't get as annoying as One Piece. I'm waiting to see how great the female character is if there even is one, this can make or break a show.
Inuyasha (TV) Excellent
There's just something great about this, not sure what. It just moves, feels, and does everything right. I guess that's why it was over 200 episodes long, only being out "showed" by One Piece and a couple other Anime. Don't be scared away by the cartooniness. Inuyasha has a really intricate story line that includes many different love stories. The characters are probably some of the best Anime characters ever, Inu Yasha can really make the action seem intense thanks to great voice acting, and Kagome makes being the classic sweet innocent Anime girl next door look like nothing. On top of that there is Kitty La La, Sango, and Shippo which are straight out of a Myasaki film.
Last Exile (TV) Masterpiece
(The) Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (TV) Decent
This Anime is gross. It crosses the line a little bit in my oppinion. One second I'm sitting here thinking it's a great Anime, and it is well written and has some great characters, than it crosses the line with Ecchi, than again with Fanboy and Loli all in one shot (fondling a freshman over and over and over again), and throughout there is lot's of homosexual activity in the form of women that being said I'm sure it's just a sexist fanboy nod but maybe not. Either way it's sad. They didn't have to take it that far. Ruined such a great Anime.)
Monster (TV) Masterpiece
Monster is about social justice and responsibility. It's one of the most authentic and non cartoon style Anime's period. You can't help but take this serious and thankfully it's not set in ancient China like similar Anime's. Madhouse produced this so obviously it doesn't suck. If you like shows like Law and Order or shows about justice and corruption. Watch this.
Mushi-Shi (TV) Excellent
My Neighbor Totoro (movie) Masterpiece
What can I say. It's Myasaki. Great music. Great characters. Great theme song. Fun watch.
Nabari no Ou (TV) Excellent
Nothin' like a good Ninja flick. I thought this was well balanced. It wasn't too cheesy since the main character himself thinks ninjas are a silly idea, also the action is actually very well done. Most importantly, this story line is aggressive not letting a dull moment slip in. Oh and the Animation is great
Occult Academy (TV) Excellent
I just finished Occult. Now where's the sequel?!! It's a great show. Here are the five best things about Occult Academy; 1.) It's unique as there are not too many Anime's about the Occult 2.) Unlike most Anime this get's better as it goes on!!! 3.) There is very little Ecchi, or Fanservice and despite the cartooniness it makes this Anime more mature and respectable! 4.) The main character Maya is really awesome! 5.) A criticism I heard of the show was that there are some "fluff" episodes (mostly episodes (3-6). I don't agree. Fluff to me is different than "filler". A filler is something that is just made to create space (like on a cd) so you feel like paying for 10 songs. Fluff in film isn't to make something bad, for example on Buffy, or on Inu Yasha, or on The Office, Sienfeld. Not everything went together sometimes each episode had a simple plot (fluff). This is just the STYLE of show and yes it makes more money in the long run but I would rather a show stick around a little longer if it's good. Also most great shows mature with age after the first season in the "fluff" style as this was the case in the shows mentioned above. The only thing I didn't like about this was the slight cartooniness of the monsters etc! Get rid of the cartooniness go for more abstract!!
One Piece (TV 1999) Masterpiece
Paprika (movie) Excellent
What makes a great Anime Film;
1. Clear yet clever story. Emphasis on clear.
2. Unique characters.
3. Great music.
4. Deeply emotional dynamics anger, love more than on conventional movies
5. Great, detailed, bright visuals of course in every way!
6. The absence of ecchi etc. (so you can talk about it with others and so your lil sis can watch it!)
7. A good fast pace.

Paprika has it all. The characters are amazing. Especially Toru the obese guy. The visuals are like being in a candy store and dreaming at the same time. The story is unique and get's more unique as it goes on. The best part is that it's easy to understand. It loses you for a second or two but it brings you back.

There is one fanservice part but it's only once.

Lastly did Inception birth from this? There is a large chance since this came out first and the sharing dreams idea etc. is all present here. Watch this if you like Inception!
Puella Magi Madoka Magica (TV)
Puella Magi Madoka Magica is about a girl named Madoka, she has a dream about magic. A new character at school shakes things up in which adds to the intensity of the first episode. Along with a bloody creature named Kyuubey, who is infact quite rad. But he doesn't move his mouth when he talks=really annoying. First negative.

. Puella Magi is strange because it seems its for younger kids a little, but it has a more complex and dark story line (see article on this site where they ask the creator about this). To compliment the story Puella has really interesting, unique artwork which is nice for a change. The story unfolds nicely but not without a few quirks. The quirk? Fan service. I instantly turned it off. The girls in this show are like 10 years old but I thought this still might be enjoyable because of the artistic qualities. After the opening scene which displays them fully naked, and the fanservice dialog in the second episode. I couldn't take it anymore. This is just wrong.
Reborn! (TV) Excellent
Rental Magica (TV) Excellent
This is just an all around good Anime. Really it's one rating lower than what I gave it but the reason I gave it what I did, is because honestly there aren't many all around good Anime's in the first place. Most are usually tainted with confusion, explicitness, sexism, overtechiness, or fan service. So I gave this a higher review again because and all around good anime is rare. This does everything right, good unique characters, cats, and flashbacks (character depth), and on top of that it has good fight scenes. There is just nothing truly unique about it,or that stands out.
Rideback (TV) Masterpiece
Rideback is a story about Rin a former Ballet champ who broke her leg and couldn't compete anymore. Rin is accompanied by two unique friends. They are both great characters but one is slightly annoying. The other characters are just as good! Rideback is a masterpiece for two reasons. The first is that it blended two completely opposite ideas, mech robots and ballet into one creating one of the most clever premise's ever. Yet this is probably why some people dislike the show, mech/robot Nerds probably don't like this style show at all. It's far from Sci-Fi and much closer to slice of life. That being said I still think it's a great blend for guys and girls a like. The second reason is that this Anime is about overcoming obsticals and moving on, it's a little bit deeper than some anime's. Like in most great anime's emotions are portrayed here flawlessly, leaving you with great inner feelings and it is done with mech robot's? Yes! Another possible complaint though is that of CGI. I have defend the CGI here because it doesn't bother me like it does in other anime's. The CGI is above par here, and when in combination with great animation it looks awesome. For example there is a water scene in which the water is drawn over top of the CGI and it work's flawlessly!
Sands of Destruction (TV) Masterpiece
Great all around Anime. Too bad it is based on a video game. This show is like a better Inu Yasha or One Piece. It plays out like a classic movie title. The reason it's better than those two shows is because it's more dynamic. The fantasy side is more fantasy and the action is better action, and the characters are more unique. Some people might be turned off by the cartoonish animal characters but it's not much worst than a Final Fantasy/Kingdom Hearts video game. Also the story line is a simple and the story is a complex but not confusing. The story line is more similar to One Piece in that it is almost linear. And the characters remind me of Inu Yasha chracters but darker
Spirited Away (movie) Masterpiece
Summer Wars (movie) Excellent
Summer Wars moves like a Masterpiece. The opening sequence is awesome, and the two lead characters, Kenji and Natsuki are highly likable. Directed by, Mamoru Hosoda, the same director that made The Girl Who Lept Through Time wars is a story about a social network site causing the world to end. The most notable part of this movie besides the fact that they constantly play Coy Coy a Japenese card game throughout is the fact that every character has an Avatar making each character more unique in a duplicate kind of way. This is great except they should have brought this in to the movie earlier because it's one of the best ideas going on. Problem is we only see some Avatars until later. All the critics are saying that Summer Wars lacks a magic but I still haven't heard a good answers as to why. Well I'll tell you what it is. The beginning is too long. That's it. From the second half of the movie on it's great. Everything that makes an Anime great is there; great, unique characters, emotional daydreaming, teamwork, action. Before that... well...the intro is awesome but than I started to get board. Either way this small roller coaster ride is worth it! It's most defiantly fun to watch!
(The) Tower of Druaga: The Aegis of Uruk (TV) Masterpiece
Tower of Druaga is based on the video game of the same name, a game that runs on the Pac Man hardware. Jil is a want-to-be hero who just can't make it, Kaaya a Mage finds him after battle and heals him. The two start a group that eventually try to climb the top of Tower of Druaga. Druaga isn't what you expect it to be and that's why it works. There are great action sequences, but what makes this shine brighter than the average knights sword: The Characters. Each character is unique and truly awesome. Also the unexpected comedy smooths this Anime out into a nice delicacy. Wish the animation was a little bit better, but in general it's above par. This is probably in my top five Anime of all time since it's truly mysterious while being simultaneously funny. Reminds me of some really good parts of Final Fantasy.
(The) Tower of Druaga: the Sword of Uruk (TV) Excellent
The Sword of Uruk is a continuation of the first Season of Tower of Druaga: Aegis of Uruk. Simply put it's "excellent" but only because of the first season. There's far less comedy and GOD help us, no pun intended, this Season has amazing "EPIC GOD SYNDROME". The good news is that, for once, I could follow it and still enjoyed the show !!! I There was far less comedy this time around but I do like the new character becuase she's kind of Steam Punk. Now if only the Animation just looked a tad better! It still looks good on my Blu- Ray up-convertor but some of the lines don't connect and some of the animation starts to go down hill here in general, despite the converting. Overall I had to see the end, which was also disappointing in my opinion (don't want to give away spoilers). It probably would have ended better if they weren't coming out with the game or preparing ofr a sequal (my guess). Just like Death Note it should have ended sooner....the video game...eeeh probably not worth it.
(The) Twelve Kingdoms (TV) Excellent
This Anime starts out awesome! but suffers from the same symptoms as most Anime. The animation is choppy and scrolls, yet there are well drawn scenes. Also the story line is confusing, yet still has a habit of engrossing you. The writing sounds like it was written by one of the characters from The Big Bang Theory making this almost classic rendition of what could be a more detailed Narnia, an overwhelming and bloated Narnia. Twelves strength is the topics that are carried on dramatically throughout; poverty, suffering, corruption, salvation, and loyal friendships. This series is like a roller-coaster ride, but it's a great one
Un-Go (TV) Excellent
When They Cry - Higurashi (TV) Masterpiece
When They Cry moves like Lost, or an Alfred Hitchcock film, it even has similar music placement . Murder She Wrote also rings a bell when I watch this. What makes When They Cry different from Death Note and films that are dark/technical is that there's a balance of "slice of life" Anime here, that's actually why it reminds me of Alfred Hitchcock. With Alfred's films there's always that nice 60's Marry Poppin's thing going on in the back round, think Rear Window. This makes it all the more creepy.
Wolf's Rain (TV) Excellent
This Anime is above par. It has passion and it's unique. It also has good characters. The only reason it's not better than excellent is because I would expect a slightly less confusing story line (although I heard there is an OAV version expecially for the last episode so maybe this helps make it better). The story line is perfect for awhile but starts to get a little too confusing in the final episodes. They should have added a couple more episodes to explain the story and maybe a couple extra unique characters who have good character depth would have been nice. A classic Anime is one you can watch anytime with anyone. This get's close and misses, but it is a must watch. "Wolf" too me is perfect in many ways. It captivates the classic "sad" Anime feeling of Anime's Like Lord of the Fireflies yet completes the empathy in a God sort of way making it inspirational. The answer to the pain is Paradise and that's all that this film's about. Well it's also about dogs, man's best friend, which to me all great movies have. Additionally "Wolf" moves at a pleasing pace, the only downfall is the "stereotypical Anime God syndrome" thing, in which a large part of the Anime is devoted to the "who knows where or what", "large creatures in the sky" junk that just end up making many Anime confusing, but it doesn't destroy! Wolf's Rain is still great. Watch it on a winter day.
X (TV)
