SilencioParis's Anime

I'm a French/Spanish native speaker, so i apologize in advance for my funny sentences and use of words in English.

Seen all Rating Comment
Accelerando - Datenshi-tachi no Sasayaki (OAV) Very good Stories are short but well-written. Some very rare erotic ideas and details are carefully produced.
Ai no Kusabi (OAV) Decent I underrated it because, besides being far too dated in almost all respects, it's slow, or at least rhythm is weak enough to spoil a part of the experience. Otherwise, it's a honorable love story between two strong characters, which is kind of fresh, and i personally loved all the 'pet ring' thing ^^
Air Master (TV) Decent There's a lot of weaknesses in this one, and even one or two things that really annoyed me (some characters just don't have any interest for example). Despite all this, more of the fight scenes are well-made, as are something like half of the comic scenes, so i managed to see it until the end. I over-rated it a little, though, because some ideas are rare enough to worth it (the main character isn't a common top-model/idol/whatever bombshell, but has an atypical body that becomes engaging as the episodes go, for example)
Aishiteruze Baby (TV) Decent The overall impression isn't so good, i mean, music, graphics and animation aren't good enough to help the usual silliness of a shoujo setting, but... Despite all this negative points, this anime succeeds in -telling some not-so-simple stories with not-so-simple characters, in a way that i must admit, works.
Aki Sora (OAV) Decent This one is softer than the sequel but begins the story (see my comment on the sequel)
Aki Sora: Yume no Naka (OAV) Decent I guess lots of people call that soft porn, but personally i found it hot. The characters, graphics and animation are ok. The rest is quite common, but the story is good, except for the end, where i would have preferred a more tragic ending instead of one that you can so easily expect for a ecchi/hentai prod.
Akiba Girls (OAV) So-so Just otaku fantasy here... Well, fair enough for that kind of anime, some ideas are funny, even if i'm not fond of the subject, even if characters and graphics are hardly decent, and even if... (and so on)
Akira (movie) Decent Not the manga at all, but excellent ost and powerful graphics... a pity for the story and characters that deserved a better/longer adaptation.
Alien from the Darkness (OAV) So-so Oldies, but a good idea still a good idea, and it's just a shame it wasn't done nowadays. A shame this isn't high-quality anime.
Alignment You! You! The Animation (OAV) Good Good ideas, specially the fact that the dead just don't have any reason to feel guilty of any perversion any more. The rest is decent, excepting perhaps for graphics and animation, kind of overexcited sometimes, but, well, it's porn, so who cares.
Allison & Lillia (TV) Not really good The script is so bad i could (would ?) have stopped seeing this one, but i must admit some ideas and characters aren't rubbish. Unfortunately, they alone can't be much of a compensation. Should i add that animation, design, music, etc are (hardly) decent (all but aerial action scenes are appalling for example -_-') ? I saw it till the end though...
Amagami SS (TV) Decent It's a good piece of work based on a dating game. I didn't play the game, but despite the clichés of that kind of stuff, every story has a little something interesting enough to help. Still, it's too soft and indulgent in too many ways. (just for skipping purposes : Episodes 1-4 school idol senpai / 5-8 friend-lover classmate / 9-12 too-much-moe kouhai / 13-16 lightly tsundere kouhai / episodes 17-20 lightly dumb osananajimi / 20-24 lightly yandere clasmate / 25 hidden character)
Amagami SS+ (TV) Decent More of the same stuff, not better nor worse.
Amatsuki (TV) So-so Everything is average, which is kind of disappointing. Yes indeed, the story contains a lot of good ideas, of which just one is eventually developed enough to become appealing (the struggle against god). Unfortunately, it appears in the end, and since there is no sequel...
Amazing Nuts! (OAV) Not really good The first and third clips are ok... Well, ok for a showcase of graphics and animation, not really intersting for audiences who aren't planning to pay a studio to work for them or sth like that... Plus, some musics just suck.
Amon - Apocalypse of Devilman (OAV) Weak There are some really fun violent scenes, and some really weird atmospheres too... unfortunately, they are too rare and can't hide all the weaknesses
Amon Saga (OAV) Awful Everything is so bad in this one, you want to watch it till the end to see if it could possibly be worse... no, wait, don't do that !
Anata dake Konban wa (OAV) Weak Excepting some funny scenes, it's an ordinary hentai anime, with poor graphics.
Angel Beats! (TV) So-so The quality of graphics is good and animation is very good. Story builds several nice ideas and some characters are quite original, besides, it's often very funny. Unfortunately, a lot of the story is ambitious but just don't make any sense, the moe clichés are too numerous and most developments of the good ideas are botched. I found some consolation in the many laughs i had, though ^^
Angel Cop (OAV) Decent Kind of anime that stands for a generation (late 80ies), from art to script, with the weaknesses this kind of works had. Nevertheless, it has the good sides of this era, with dark stories, spectacular fights and politicized characters, and can produce some inspiration if you can stand dated material.
Angel Core (OAV) Decent Decent hentai, though i didn't like the lolicon part, but the nazi stuff is funny.
Angel Densetsu (OAV) Not really good Funny, and decent graphics, but the rhythm and characters aren't so good
Angel's Egg (movie) Decent I can't say it's good, because story doesn't make much of a sense, unless you can be satisfied by some biblical quotes as a so-called background. Nevertheless, graphics, animation and music are excellent, and the atmospheres forecast T. Nihei's masterpieces, among others. A must-see for Amano's groupies.
(The) Animatrix (OAV) Not really good Nothing more than graphics and animations, often on a poor inspiration.
Another Lady Innocent (OAV) Not really good Well, it's a piece of fine graphical work, but design and ambience don't worth it at all.
Antique Bakery (TV) Good Good-quality anime, with good characters. Sometimes 3d animation is a little weird. Besides, the bishounen+bakery concept is way too "women-aimed", a good idea indeed, commercially speaking... well, can i really say it's wrong ?
Aoi Bungaku Series (TV) Very good Not only it's six wonderful anime out of short classic stories (which i personally would have never known otherwise), but it's an adaptation of these works to the media. That means re-scripting the stories and finding the visual ideas that will best carry the written ones... and Madhouse succeeded in doing so. Still, some stories are better than others, but none of them is pointless, and the screen makes them shine.
Appleseed (movie) Weak At first I thought it was much worse. Not that it has anything good neither, but it's watchable if you're not allergic to Hollywood-blockbuster-like scripts (like i am) and dated cgi...
Ar Tonelico (OAV) Awful The only good thing is that there is only one episode of 25 minutes.
Arakawa Under the Bridge (TV) Decent Somewhere between T.Miike's Shangri-la and Sayounara Zetsubou Sensei, a good comedy, even if perhaps a little shallow, considering it deals with topics that could have deserved some development, and not just a gag succession.
Arakawa under the Bridge × Bridge (TV) Decent Some things are better, some others worse, but in the end it keeps the fun and rhythm of the first season
Arashi no Yoru ni (movie) Decent Good for children, but not bad even for adults to see. Graphics and animation are good, script is disney-ish but without the annoying songs, and characters are in tune with the story, despite some kawaii overloads here and there.
Arjuna (TV) Weak Idea in itself isn't bad, here and there a lot of true things are said. More important, the dialogues and interactions between the (not-so-bad) characters are pretty better than the average ones in anime. Unfortunately, there's nothing special about the graphics and animation, and when it comes to the CGI, well... worse may exist, but i don't want to see that. Besides, the story barely makes sense, often telling half-truths that all together don't make an argument and lacking the needed rhythm to sustain any suspension of disbelief. The last episodes are specially irritating and uninteresting. I was so sorry for environmental issues to be dealt with by such a weak anime, that i felt like leaving a longer comment than usual.
Ayakashi - Samurai Horror Tales (TV) Not really good Everything in the yotsuya kaidan (ep. 1-4) is bad, but i would have rated it awful, because of the potential of the original story... damn, that could have been so awesome that making this pitiful thing worth double punishment. The second story (ep.5-8) is better, which isn't very difficult indeed, still, there are some problems in the script and animation is bad, but may deserve a so-so rating. Last but not least, the bakeneko story (ep. 9-11) is the basis of the 'mononoke' series, and to me, the better shot of these... It's good anime, with graphics and ideas original enough to tolerate some dated cgi animations and the deus ex machina ending, typical of the main character.
Ayakashi Ayashi: Ayashi Divine Comedy (OAV) Not really good Same as main series, gives a slightly more interesting, but still clumsy, ending
B Gata H Kei - Yamada’s First Time (TV) So-so Classic "ecchi" anime, but fun enough to keep awake most of the time. Would have be nice if it went further in the story, perhaps in a 2nd gig, hoping it won't go otaku more than it already has, the idea deserves better
BaBuKa (OAV) Not really good Everything is not-so-good-porn, excepting the script and spirit of each 2 stories, which are good enough to be fairly original for that kind of media.
Baby Blue (movie) Decent Nice work and classic but well written script, a nice micro-story
Baccano! (TV) Excellent Baccano is a true masterpiece, but i've under-rated it a little because of the three last/ova episodes are kind of pointless ; and the graphics that could be better, no, must have been... well doesn't make much of a difference anyways, everybody has to see this one.
Bakemonogatari (TV) Good Brilliant graphics, animation and dialogues. The not really original stories and characters are the pretext to set up a surprisingly original piece of work (between xxxHolic and any harem-like, i'd say) that could, and probably have to, be seen more than one time. Still, it's a pretext, here and there, some of the chatter, anime/manga/game-nerd-aimed references and fanserv are pointless, it's inevitable and indivisible of the whole, as i suppose the author wanted it to be.
Balthus - Tia's Radiance (OAV) Weak Eroticism, story, animation, music, you name it... almost everything is a joke in this one. Graphics are dated but ok though, and being so dated turns it in a kind of funny anime (well, principally because there is only 25min of it ^^')
Bamboo Blade (TV) Good Being a 3d kendoka myself, it's difficult to be objective about this one... but i'll try: Graphics are good enough, animation is uneven (quite cheap sometimes) and music is ok. Story is not-so-classic, and fulfils its purpose efficiently despite some rhythm problems here and there. Characters are good, and i say that being a hard-core moe-hater most of the time, but i must admit they are well written and designed. Concerning kendo, there are a lot of technical errors, which i feel like forgiving because this anime shows the interest in kendo not in its sportive side (which could have easily lead to a sport/competition-anime, not only boring, but wrong regarding the martial art 'way' as i lived it until today), but in the relationships/challenges that it helps to create/overcome, which is more universal and interesting.
Bartender (TV) Not really good Even if the original ideas which link spirits to people's lives are (some of them only) quite well-written, you have to be a true fanatic of spirits *and* cocktails / expensive bars of Ginza or the like if you feel like forgiving the under-quality graphics, poor animation, deplorable rhythm / editing, not to mention unnatural characters... Everything is a poor pretext to present interesting cocktails, spirits and history in some of the less interesting attempts to do so.
Bastard!! (OAV) Not really good Well, Bastard!! is one of these wonderful manga that stands for a generation, and i deeply like it. However, this ova are a weak attempt to put it in animation, and being dated isn't much of an excuse... Still, some of the fun of the original work is still there, leaving me with the dream of a new anime series which will be a delight to see.
Batman: Gotham Knight (movie) Not really good The first chapter is quite funny, and has nice art and animation, i'd say it's decent. The second one got some good art too, but the script and ideas are too common, turning it weak. So is the third, with lightly better storytelling, but too poor inspiration. Same about the fourth, it has a ridiculous script and poor ideas, but with very nice graphics. Fifth one is interesting and pretty well done, i'd say decent, considering it's quite short. The last one has a good action and art value, but still too common and even somehow sweet to B.Wayne, which is bad. Overall, this series are a bunch of good graphic works tainted by the Hollywood crap of this last decades, the latter taking advantage on the former, and transforming a nice gamble in a disappointing show.
Battle Angel (OAV) Not really good Adapting such a nice manga as gunm into anime is difficult, specially when it comes to rhythm and script, and this is the major issue with this one. Still, graphics and animation aren't bad, a good thing for the battle scenes, and the ideas of the original work keep some of their power.
(The) Beast Player Erin (TV) Not really good It would deserve a "weak" rating, but art is so nice and 'made with love' that i overrated it a little. As it is, the "beast/human relationship" and "tool of war" alongside with the character evolution from childhood to adulthood are nice ideas, but none of them turn out right, because of bad script and the bad influence of some *very* annoying points : First, i almost fainted discovering after the last episode a preview explaining that they'll make an abridged series ! 10 episodes instead of 50, seriously, i'd better seen that one, since the long-version is a caricatural example of time-buying (flashbacks, re-storytelling, annoying songs, pointless scenes,...), this makes rhythm suffer a lot without any compensation. Besides, characters are often bad-written and unrealistic, with even a so-called comic pair of characters that have to be one of the worst-ever of that kind ever written. Lastly, it sometimes basks in naiveness making you believe you're seeing a Ingalls daughter playing with the smiling animals. Those negative points are linked to the difficulties they had to choose between a child-aimed anime (where simplification, so-called 'kindness' and these rhythm lengths are kind of ok, even if not excusable), and an actual original work, which they tried to make with the good ideas told above, ideas that young children would find boring i guess, in the verbose and weak way they are in this anime.
Beat Angel Escalayer (OAV) So-so Quite common, but they had some fun with the setting and some battle scenes, and that helps, for this kind of material, i can't say it's bad.
Beat Blades Haruka (OAV) So-so Quite common magical girl/futanari porn, yet not bad most of the time, there isn't anything new here.
BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad (TV) So-so Not a top-level production regarding graphics, animation and story, and there's a lot of issues in the rhythm and plausibility of the script, but ok, everything about music is kind of good enough to make up for it. I just regret that the last episodes are really a mess...
Behind Closed Doors (OAV) Not really good Basic and common bdsm porn, not a lot to tell about it.
Berserk: The Golden Age Arc I - The Egg of the King (movie) Decent Amazing script adaptation, i must admit it's a shorter and well written adaptation, which applies better in this format for such a long manga series. Still, the CGI is often clumsy, which is really annoying, and the first anime series weren't bad, so it's a bit uninteresting, for now
Berserk: The Golden Age Arc II - The Battle for Doldrey (movie) Good Same strong points as the precedent movie, with some animation and graphic improvements that almost remove all awkwardnesses
Berserk: The Golden Age Arc III - The Advent (movie) Good Same merits as the precedent, always that excellent choices in scripting that would have deserved a very good rating if this wasn't (again) the second adaptation of this work. At any rate, i wish the t 4°c will have the credits to go on, 'cause if they apply their writing talent to the next part of the manga, which is messy and uneven, we could be witnessing the birth of a masterpiece...
Bible Black (OAV) Decent Quality is irregular, specially regarding art and animation. I like futanari, so it's perhaps a little over-rated, but even without that, ideas and script aren't so bad, and it's overall entertaining.
Bible Black Only (OAV) Weak Just a bunch of poor sex scenes, without real relation to the previous series.
Bible Black Origins (OAV) So-so As the first OAVs, but without futanari...
Bible Black: New Testament (OAV) Decent Quality is a little better than the original, and story/characters are pretty the same. Still, inspiration is quite average, and even if you could fear it'd have been worse, it remains just an entertainment.
Binetsukko ♭37℃ (OAV) Not really good Art and animation are kind of poor, and sometimes it's over-censored, but plot and general ambience is fun enough to be watchable.
Birdy the Mighty Decode:02 (TV) Good At first i thought of not going beyond the two first episodes, but on the contrary, I must admit that it's quite better than the first gig. Animation and battle scenes are a true pleasure, plot is better (despite some unconvincing outcomes and expedient character's silliness) and overall impression is good... see ? that wasn't so hard to improve !
Birdy the Mighty: Decode (TV) Decent Animation is decent to good, even very good in some battle scenes. I didn't like the charadesign of the aliens, specially the anthropomorphic ones (what kind of swimsuit-con you have to be to find those 'clothes' arousing ?). Characters are pretty well made, specially the relation between the two main characters, that shows a girl and a boy actually sharing a strong friendship-love relation without becoming a damn couple, whoo, THAT's a relief. The rest (graphics, music, script, etc. ) is quite average. Regarding the main plot, it's not as bad as it seems, and the sub-plots, despite being classic, help it to resolve without sucking too much... 'cause yeah, it's far to be as good as it could be with a little, additional, yet simple effort, for sure. So, a decent entertainment, but not unforgettable.
Black Blood Brothers (TV) Not really good Graphically good, animation varying a lot but let's say it's average, as is the music and the script. Even if entertaining most of the time, the plot is desperately hollow, so it'll be vain to hope any kind of completion. Characters are far too common, and their designs are so shounen cliché style that you'll wander if you haven't seen this before a thousand times.
Black Lagoon (TV) Excellent I over-rated it a little, because i'm fond of this kind of setting, and besides i love bad girls with guns. At first, this anime could seem being just that, but don't be fooled, dive into it, and you'll notice how simple, amazing and fun it is... even if it doesn't intend to be a masterpiece, i have a smile stuck to my face for hours after every BLagoon's episode.
Black Lagoon: Roberta's Blood Trail (OAV) Good Script isn't as good, they tried to write too complicated s**t, when the force and effectiveness of this series is the simplicity. Still, it's worth seeing.
Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage (TV) Excellent Same as the first gig.
Blade of the Immortal (TV) Decent I under-rated it a little because of the not-so-good adaptation of the manga, which is a good/very good one. Despite that, it's pretty good anime, with nice ideas, good script and animation, and decent art, story and characters. It's quite battle-focused, and sometimes a little surprising in mixing historical and fantastic elements, as the swords for example, or the language...
Blame! (ONA) Weak Considering Blame! as one of my most-loved mangas and the experimental approach of these ONAs, i didn't feel like giving a 'bad' rating, but don't look in this one for the Nihei's original masterpiece, this is just some people who tried to make something based on it, and to me, didn't succeed.
Blood+ (TV) Decent Graphics could be better, and animation is a little clumsy in battle scenes, which aren't very original, as is the overall scripting (plus, 50 episodes is damn too long for what they've done with). That being said, the plot isn't so bad, and has got some excellent ideas that give a second life to vampire stories, even if lacks setting to make mechanics likely . Besides, some characters are well done, even if their decisions are from time to time quite stupid. In a word, worth seeing if you look for inspiration, but don't expect it to be *that* good.
Blood: The Last Vampire (movie) So-so Awesome production, a visual treasure with very good action scenes and music. The problem is, it's hollow apart from that, characters and plot are likely just because it's a forty minutes show, with a lot of battles. So much work for what in the end ? not enough.
Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-chan (TV) Not really good Funny sometimes, even if not unforgettable, overall quality being average. It's short, so that's kind of ok, though.
Blue Gender (TV) Decent Interesting story, most of its potential being thrown away by a hasty script writing i think, specially the last episodes, both excellent and awful in their depth and non-simplistic possibilities, unfortunately none of them will be used. Aside from that, animation is awful (you'll cry at every battle scene if you see this one), music and design are dated but sometimes surprisingly good (D.Aronofsky's 'Pi' fans, open your hears ;) ), and characters suffer from the scripting, which contaminates often the editing, turning the whole into a dull and pretty much weak show. But i insist, the story and its original issues worth it.
Blue Gender: The Warrior (movie) Not really good Good editing can make miracles, here's the proof, with battle scenes and tension reaching a decent level, when t'was pathetic in the series... Some animation and art is new, and usually good, but not enough. Besides, even if the first part of the series is well shortened, retaining all the good points, the second isn't, turning it in a more likely but not really interesting ending arc. I'd rather interesting errors than decent flatness.
Body Transfer (OAV) Good Switching is a nice fantasy, and this is a quite effective anime about it. Graphics could be better, and plot could be more elaborated, but well, that doesn't spoil the experience.
Bokurano (TV) Weak Graphically speaking, it's average, except for CGI, which is dated and uninteresting. About the characters, it's kind of ok even if not unforgettable. The main issue is, as almost always with the "game" settings, that pointlessness is everywhere, and even if it aims to depict the violence of modern society, it stops halfway too often, leaving the impression of holding back, when in fact cruelty is the only thing that could (perhaps) save the story from disaster. I deeply regret to have seeing all of this, but for the "world against world" concept, which stills a good idea.
Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan Second (OAV) Not really good Quite the same as the previous.
Boogiepop Phantom (TV) Decent Nice atmospheres thanks to the music and editing (kind of "s.e.lain-ish"), art and characters being quite good for that kind of theme. Unfortunately, once the puzzle is completed, you understand that there's not a lot to understand... Sometimes shallow, sometimes cryptic and often unoriginal, the story fails to make much of a sense. But graphics/sounds are original enough to worth seeing if you like dark ambiances, as i do.
BPS - Battle Programmer Shirase (TV) Not really good Some good ideas and fun scenes, but art and animation are below-average, and the hacker and romance themes aren't really relevant, just an excuse to moe. Besides, a lot of dialogues are pointless time-buyers, which is sad for a half-format series (12 min)...
Bride of Darkness (OAV) Weak Art is weak, animation bad, and anything else is quite classic and unoriginal, but the characters and the story, which aren't fully and correctly used, so...
Broken Blade (movie series) Not really good Very good to excellent art and an interesting setting. Characters and animation are good most of the time, even if sometimes totally wrong... weird. For a 5 hours show it would (should) have been ok even if not a masterpiece. Unfortunately, the story and music are unoriginal and, which is worse, the editing and script are terrible, i don't know which of the two dragged the other in such an abyssal nonsense, but it's as bad as a z-class Hollywood movie.
Bunny Drop (TV) So-so Nice art, pretty mature story and characters, but it stops where it should begin... i wish they followed the story far forward, it's frustrating as it is...
Cafe Junkie (OAV) So-so Overall, it's average to below-average, but the situations aren't bad, so it's watchable.
Campus (OAV) Weak Cheap production, and unoriginal story... well, at least it has one.
CANAAN (TV) Bad Looking at the good battle scenes and considering the rest as average to low-average, this anime would have deserved something like a not really good rating, but watchable for girls with guns fans. But some things aren't just low average, they are awful (most of the characters are just cheap moe empty shells, story without any kind of interest and full of cheap pathos as in worst hollywood productions, script so full of unlikelinesses and pointless scenes,...), so please don't do as i did and watch this s**t...
Capeta (TV) Not really good Art and animation are ok, even if cgi is awkward sometimes. Characters are quite ok, which is a true relief in that kind of anime. Unfortunately, all that can't turn an archetypal tournament anime in a good work, the mainstream and unoriginal needs, specially about the script (slow as hell sometimes, fast as hell at others..) and 'wtf' recurring details (pets, eventually terrible female characters, discard of the relationship arcs between them, and so on...). I suppose that if you're a huge fan of so-called motor sports it could be watchable. I, personally, watched it fast and already forgot 80% of it.
Casshern (live-action movie) Visually excellent, the design is soimpressive, it justifies to see it all, despite the average to weak level of everything else... i'd have noted it So-so to Decent, depending on the mood.
Castle Fantasia: Seima Taisen (OAV) Not really good Average porn production, awfully censored (the editing i mean) but with not so bad fantasy characters and story.
Castle in the Sky (movie) Excellent One of the best movies from H.Miyazaki and crew... Still, it's simplistic (the curse of young-aimed works) and quite frustrating in the end (the curse of the format), but in any case it's a must-see.
(The) Cat Returns (movie) So-so Cute, but excepting some good moments, it's not so inspired nor well-made and leaves the taste of some watered-down wonder in a classic story.
Cat Soup (OAV) Good Experimental but with a lot to tell, this work isn't unforgettable nor easy to assess, but works fine for its format, and i'd even say it's an excellent anime of its kind, which is hard to compare with other kind of anime... each individual has to make is opinion, and therefore, see it ^^
Cencoroll (movie) Decent Nice, well-produced and with interesting ideas and characters, but it's just half an hour of it, so it's difficult to tell if longer would have worth it, but it' should have been tried.
Chaos;HEAd (TV) So-so Excepting the last episodes, where script and even animation are painfully weak, i suppose because of the unclear story, even for the authors, the 8~9 previous episodes aren't so bad. It makes something interesting out of a harem-syle anime, which is pretty rare. The exploration of an otaku's delusions successfully goes far beyond its point, if you can bear the silliness of some tropes and the animation and visual below-average level.
Cherry no Manma (OAV) Awful Just... what... was... that...??
Chobits (TV) Decent The story and characters are interesting, but some of the ideas are too quickly scripted, while other ones (specially the cuteness + fanserv arcs, for example episode 14 is mental torture) are given far too much importance, so it's a bit disappointing in the end. Nevertheless, human nature and relationships are interestingly depicted, it's often funny, and art, animation, music and so on are at average/good level, so it's kind of ok.
Chocolate Underground (ONA) Not really good Kind of Orwell-ish, which is always a good thing, despite its naiveness. Perhaps good for children, supposing they can stand the foul cgi and weak scripting.
Cinderella Boy (TV) So-so Art is bad and animation awful, i must say most of the story is unlikely, but... But it's kind of ok, since characters and script are sometimes so excellent, that a good production with these ideas could be a very good piece of work !
City of Sin (OAV) Weak Basic and quite cheat porn, but... damn, what's with that music ?
Clannad (TV) So-so Technically good production. The plots around the different characters are interesting, even if unequally scripted, specially in the second half of the series, generally worst than the first. The true problem are the characters themselves. Most of them are over-cute caricatures/unoriginal moesugiru looks and attitudes, which drops every likeliness below zero, specially when the situations are unlikely to begin with. Could have been ok if it was a light and uninteresting show, but this one is far above that in the stories, so it doesn't match well. Still, *when* it works, it's excellent, specially for the dialogues.
Clannad After Story (TV) Not really good Always a good technical production. The first half is pretty much as the last half of the first gig, therefore with the same merits and flaws. Then, 'it' happens, and some flaws disappear, but even more do the merits... Story and script becomes an almost empty shell using thousands-of-times-used (and seen) melodramatic tear-jerking schemes and scenes, reaching painfully an ending which is a pointless exercise of nonsense, i'd say sth like a Mr. Bean's soap opera in anime, but actually worse. Despite all this, i kind of understand why so many people find the second gig more interesting than the first : Less moe (but not so better, most of the show remaining kind, soft and cute as a baby's a**, damn it -_-'), more adult themes (you've indeed not seen a lot of those in anime, but you know thousands in other media, i.e. unoriginal), and the ageing of romance anime characters, which is in fact a true good point, but unfortunately focused only on the two main ones, second roles getting so little benefit from this rather unusual and interesting theme, and this is truly frustrating. I must add that the comedy part almost disappears, and when it's here, it can't work well any more.
Class Reunion Again (OAV) Weak Quite boring, even if the second story's a little more watchable...
Claymore (TV) Decent Average music, average design/art (i actually love the rare moments it approaches a T.Nihei's work, but it doesn't happen so much), average... well, let's say classic scripting and even story (something like a Berserk setting with lot of tough girls cutting every single thing in slices). Far from being an excellent work, its intense rhythm (a little slow at the end though), decent charaters and funny action scenes kept me focused, and i must say a lot of ideas are worthy of being called good inspiration for dark fantasy stories.
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion (TV) So-so It's an easy analogy (well, if you've already seen this one) but since it upsets me, i'll make it anyways : This show is as a Pizza Hut's pizza. It looks good on the picture, some would say with too specific designs (if you're allergic to clamp, run for your lives) but being appealing means being audacious so you won't complain. It has variety, because you can be a whatever-fan you'll find it here, should it be kawaisugiru/moe cheese dripping from your fingers to your shoes, reckless violence/fanserv tomato sauce heating your tongue, or even dubious-freshness political/philosophical anchovies which you don't remember having ordered... It invades your mouth with a pretty much yummy taste at every first bite, because everything's about the action on the spot, and there are very good, even excellent sometimes, action/battle scenes. Frustratingly, the more you chew it, the more the supposed richness of tastes mixes into an insipid pulp, uninteresting to swallow, but hey, you've gone all the trouble paying it and since it's nutritious, so you'll swallow. If you wanted 'haute cuisine' (or even a hand-made, risky but unique) you won't have called them, would you ? I'm kind of ok with it, but even that said, there still a pair of serious issues : First is that, unlike pizza (well, i hope so), this isn't suitable for children, who will be lost in the complexity of plot/dialogues, and yet, you'll have to willingly disconnect 80% of your brain potential to suspend your disbelief and forget how unlikely/pointless they really are, because the show won't give you subtle treatment, everything will be told as if it were likely and interesting even if it's contradicting itself 20 seconds later. Second issue is, unlike pizza again, which takes approximatively 30 min. maximum to eat such a quantity you can't gulp down more, an anime show like this one takes *hours* to lead you to an ending that will revolve around (as everything in the show) deus ex machina scripting, often weak and caricatural to the point you probably won't even laugh at the last episodes. Arguably decent, ok, to kill time sucking eye-candy, but "very good" ? "excellent" ? fuzakeruna...
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 (TV) So-so More consistent/likely plots, but not enough to make up for the aimless repetition of not really good sauces/scenes of the first gig. It's so messed up all along than the ending tastes almost good, but as i said before, that's all you can expect from pizza hut's food... hope you're hungry.
CODE-E (TV) So-so Average production value, but there's some feeling of a caring staff that make their best for it. Story itself is quite classical one, excepting the end that opens on a larger and perhaps interesting plot. Characters and relationships are quite nice too... Won't hurt to see, but it's not really original.
Colorful (movie) Good Quite realistic, perhaps too much, but i can't say it's such big a flaw. Even if it's just about kind of classic themes, it's well made, and fits to the movie format without being boring, despite a slow pace and some exaggerated pathos at times. I'm not fond of the background ideology though, but it's ok since it's just a background and you can actually see this work without caring about it.
Consenting Adultery (OAV) So-so Average production, with a not so common design, even if not my personal favourite. The script and setting are kind of ok, but simplistic and not unforgettable.
(The) Cougar Trap (OAV) Not really good Cheap production, quite common in most of it, and yet, it was made with the kind of scripting and two or three uncommon ideas that more or less turn it into a watchable show
Cowboy Bebop (TV) Excellent Hi-level production, specially concerning music and animation, while scripts are all very good, and often excellent. As ever, this is thanks to the characters, who have some odd designs sometimes, but still fit perfectly to the setting. This one being, as the show itself proudly states, 'the work which becomes a new genre itself'... Well, honestly, that's far from being true considering all the western/film noir & SF crossovers that precede this one, nevertheless it's arguable groovier and better-looking than most of those predecessors. The tropes here are sometimes too big/copy-paste ones, which is a weakness, and i would add that the whole story is kind of average, but it seldom perturbs the experience, and i'd say this show deserves the classic status. However i personally would have liked more active and important female characters (even if it's better in this one than samurai champloo)
Crest of the Stars (TV) Not really good Art and animation aside, it begins as an average show with some good points in the setting and story. Unfortunately, it becomes more and more chaotic, with a climax of poor scripting and pathetic shounen tropes at the end. A shame.
Crimson Climax (OAV) Decent Not very good-looking, and arguably not really good scripted as it is, some originalities and a decent character and plot manage to rise this work a little higher than the average similar stuff
Darker than Black (TV) So-so Decent art and animation, even if not really good at times. Characters are decent too, though i strongly dislike the main one, which could have been easily good. Scripting varies a lot, from almost very good at the beginning to pretty much weak near the end, but the true issue is the setting-story relation. While the ideas are often brilliant, they've been gathered without any care, which facilitates disbelief. Could make good inspiration for something better, but don't hope a lot of it
Darker than Black - Kuro no Keiyakusha: Gaiden (OAV) Decent Well, it's not so bad, since it's graphically better and with a stronger rhythm than the rest of the series. By the way, it helps to see what is and what is not totally bullshit in the so-called plot of the second season
Darker than Black: Gemini of the Meteor (TV) Not really good So little is better than the first season (some scripts, some graphics, a few designs, some little details here and there...), and so much is worse (more moe-ish elements, messed up plot, awful scripts at times which spoil character values and make one of the worst ending i've seen, ...) than it would have been fair to rate it lower, but let's be kind with the authors, who i couldn't help but think of as interesting people
Death Note (TV) So-so Visually good, most of the designs are average though. Music and most of the characters, including the main one, are *very* caricatural. This makes a mostly unoriginal and missed atmosphere, kind of "wannabe dark" urban fantasy. Plot is interesting at first, but actually serves the only purpose to make the main characters awesome, so it doesn't make any sense / reaches peaks of unlikeness numerous times, even in the same episode. Scripts are most of the time good, with tension cliffhangers and stuff... but once again it tastes almost always kind of hollow. The last episodes are painfully weak, but at this point nobody cares any more i suppose. Despite all that, i over-rated this show because of the L character design, altogether with some ideas here and there that could be useful as inspiration perhaps... I usually dislike doing this, but i feel like adding a single moral note here, since this show denigrates a lot through its characters (specially women and the so-called 'criminals and serial killers'), though i think they didn't do that on purpose, but most probably out of shallowness
Deathtic 4 (movie) Weak Interesting graphic ideas, but nothing else worth much
Demon Prince Enma (OAV) Weak Graphic and animation are ok but for the cgi, quite awkward. Characters and setting isn't so bad, but as the story, it's far too common and unsurprising. It's just four i, but they manage to show a total lack of inspiration. Sad, the mood and idea were kind of nice.
Den-noh Coil (TV) Excellent Very good in all respects, needless to say, a must-see. Personally, i find the 'pet' theme a little too important in the last episodes, considering they could have kept it at its original level, which wasn't so insistent, but well... i over-rated it because the augmented reality theme seeds a very rich inspiration, from where a lot of works will be thankful in the future, and i didn't felt like waiting to praise dennou coil for it, really ^^
Denpa teki na Kanojo (OAV) Decent Pleasant fantasy, even if not really original, and quite well produced. Still, it's far too conveniently scripted to be exciting
Destined for Love (OAV) Not really good Quite weak, but i over-rate it a little just because for this kind of content they tried to build up some script here, even if it's just for the hell of it
Detroit Metal City (OAV) Decent Very funny and visually original most of the time, even if not excellent. Still, it's a bit shallow and could have been written far better, but it's short enough to reach its goal without any boring feeling anyways
Devilman Lady (TV) Not really good The story has some interesting moments but really not unforgettable, and the script is often a mess, but despite this, the general impression was one of originality. Something like "Oh, so a yuri-mecha-old-school anime can have true mature characters and themes ?"... One of those works that i can't help thinking they had the potential to be excellent. Still, it hurts the eyes and ears so many times, i had to under rate it a little.
Dimension Bomb (movie) So-so Well, excellent art and animation but anyways, it's more a musical clip (with some juno reactor though, which is good ^^), and a plotless one...
DNA² (TV) Not really good Bad-looking and silly, but with enough funny ideas to somehow keep you awake during the 12 episodes
DNA² (OAV) Not really good Just 3 more episodes of the same
Dogs: Bullets & Carnage (OAV) Decent Quite beautiful, with interesting characters and setting and decent production. I under-rated it a little considering it's way too short to know where it would have lead, and the action scenes are not so good, which is a shame in this kind of work. But it's inspiring, and that's fair enough
Dojin Work (TV) Not really good A light produced and short formatted show, sometimes funny, sometimes not really, but often catchy... i have to add that, as a long-term amateur artist myself, i kind of liked the 'don't want to go pro' underlying idea, even if story's not exactly centred on it
Dollhouse (OAV) Not really good Just too common and not well produced, but average porn
Doorbell (movie) Not really good Nice idea (though not really original), but not so well produced, so quite dispensable
Dōra (OAV) Weak Story has some not so bad ideas but anyways, it's often un-erotic because of the poor production
Dragon Ball Z (TV) Not really good As for dragon ball, this is way too long and lightly wrote to be what i'd have called good work, still, when having a soft spot for Toriyama's concepts, it's watchable, even if personally would recommend the 'Kai' series, shorter and better produced, while keeping the (not so numerous) good points of this nostalgic stuff...
Dragon Ball Z Kai (TV) Not really good As said above, it's shorter and slightly better-looking, but that's not enough to make it just better
Dragon Pink (OAV) So-so I can't seriously note it decent, because the poor animation and often weak art, plus the theme tropes that everyone couldn't like, but it deserves it if you do like JRPGs, because it's often funny and erotic enough to make up for it, with even sometimes a surprisingly good idea or two
Dragon Rider (OAV) Weak I overrate this one just because there's some good moments in the first ova, but all the rest is really flat
Durarara!! (TV) Good Very good production, often better than on Baccano, and always those inspired characters that work well with the setting. Plus, there are a lot of good themes in the story, and even if a little too ambitiously, decently to very good scripted. Unfortunately, there's a lot more 'bugs' than the Baccano series, and despite my respect for Narita R, i must admit it's part because of the story. Actually, by 'bugs' i mean a lot of errors in the setting, dialogues and even scenes that point the flaws of the story, and once you've seen them, it's difficult not to regret their existence or simply don't think about it... kind of spoils part of the fun, but not even half of it, fortunately. It's just that it's more than enough to see it one or two times...
Eden of the East (TV) Not really good Despite being a quite good to sometimes excellent production, the plot and scripting alongside with the characters are weak, and even bad, too often. Often enough to appear to me as one of those poor scenarios that have the only ambition to keep the spectator glued to the screen without giving anything in return. Still, there's some good ideas and moments left that could be inspiring, once you separate them from the boring and almost nonsensical whole... Edit : After some time, i realized that my understanding of 'neet' from my European assumption of the term was mistaken concerning the neet's movement in Japan, which i feel like very close to my lifestyle and beliefs. Since this show is so cryptically scripted sometimes, it wasn't clear at all for me what the true meaning of the word was. Perhaps i'm not the last to make this mistake, so please visit links like this one http://tinyurl.com/njlc9qz if you feel like learning some details about it. (still, this doesn't changes my point of view on the merits and flaws of the show)
Eden of the East: Paradise Lost (movie) Not really good As messy as the rest of the series 'til the end
Eden of the East: The King of Eden (movie) Not really good Same as the series, more or less
Eden's Bowy (TV) Not really good A lot of issues in this one, specially plot and overall production, very irregular and most of the time clumsy. But oddly enough, some ideas are interesting, some designs are original and their sense of humor is often good, so it's kind of entertaining. Besides, to kill gods is always a good thing to do ^^
ef: a tale of melodies (TV) Not really good Very good graphics, animation and editing, with a lot of graphical and narrative qualities. Unfortunately, that's the only thing that saves the show, mainly aimed at cheap pathos content, personally i didn't find any of the stories (shallow and weak) nor the characters (excessively moe too often) interesting, so i watched just for the sake of art. Also, music is almost always bad, which is ironic for a so-called 'tale of melodies'
ef: a tale of memories (TV) Not really good I watched this show after its sequel, but doesn't changes much the experience, as it shares the same issues. The whole visual work is very good, even if more conventional and unoriginal than the sequel. The moe-and-fanserv-way-of-filming is more present, which is a real pain too. Kind of compensating those, at least one of the love stories isn't as boring as the other ones... but don't expect much out of it anyways
El-Hazard: The Magnificent World (OAV) So-so Nice animation work, fun and quite original characters, art is uneven, but sometimes good and besides, the pace is almost good, although i don't really want to see the 20+ episode retelling. For this show has many flaws too : some ugly design/art, some bad characters, some boring stories, some wtf dialogues, some unoriginal backgrounds, some ...
Elf no Futagohime Willan to Arsura (OAV) Weak Plain and uninteresting not even well produced porn, with long eared elves...
Elfen Lied (TV) Not really good Decent production with a lot of annoying elements. To say the biggest ones : the main theme of the score is played so often that it becomes almost unbearable, the designs and characters are moe and therefore stupidity models, and above all, the story and script is really over-convenient and weak... I would have noted it even lower if i had taken in account that sf horror and romance themes are just a pathetic excuse for ornamenting quite common tear-jerking scenes, but it would have been unfair for those who, unlike me, like that kind of stuff
(The) Familiar of Zero (TV) Weak This one's both source of interest and disappointment to me. Production is decent and even good sometimes, keeping in mind it's depicted as a light entertainment with very archetypal patterns. Unfortunately, battles and magic are weak, and since they're important, it kind of spoils the rest of the production values. Then, the world and story have too much issues and this turns the not so bad characters into predictable puppets, plots into a unlikely sequences and the whole setting into a not even funny waste, specially on the second half of the show. It's a shame, because there are a lot of decent ideas here, even if not enough to make it an excellent show, it could really have been good. Aside from that all and any notation purpose, i must say that from a certain European point of view there's something... politically ambiguous about the world setting, to say the least : Both the symbolic of what Japan, the aristocracy, the nobles' intrigues (the so-called Reconquista omg ^^'), and some rebellious characters leave a mixed impression about the ideological background of the authors... i'm inclined to think that it wasn't the true intention, but in a word it sounds as nostalgic of feudal orders, an not speculative or fantasy ones... this only doubt kept me seeing it, even if i can't say whether it's a merit or a flaw
Fantastic Children (TV) Decent Good and often very good art and animation, the designs are not my favourite type but i got used to them soon enough. Music and characters are too pathos-aimed, a point that is a mixed blessing in this show. Because pathos is good for this kind of tragic-pattern storytelling, but there's simply too much of it here, and sometimes i found it really annoying. A shame, because the story is really good, or at least has a huge potential, and i say that even considering that i disagree totally with the metaphysical point of view exposed here. But well, this are after all, just my taste of it... no, the real issue is that somewhere in the production things went wrong : a lot of scenes, dialogues and even script choices and sequences are quick done, as if in a hurry to finish or without any money left. Anyways, it's worth seeing if you're on SF and/or old-school tragedy storytelling revisited
Fault!! (OAV) So-so Nothing original, but decent for this kind of production
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (movie) Weak So many things to criticise in this one it doesn't even feel funny, i suppose a lot of hard core fans of the game (which i'm not) have probably said pretty much what i'd have said about it many years ago. On the good side, however, i noted a lot of little good ideas during the battles (pretty classic Hong Kong -ish battles but well done most of the time), some beautiful backgrounds (FFVII setting has to me only one good point, and it's its cyberpunk touch, here it's almost always used, and which is a good thing), and a mountain of wtf details that, just, made me laugh a lot even if i'll never know if it was on purpose or not from the creators point of view (physics are unpredictably exaggerated , sephiroth's dialogues are over-archetypes of some ridiculous over-badass, script is a joke, ...)
Fire Tripper (OAV) Not really good Dated and kind of poorly produced oav, with most of the time a classical scheme, but the plot idea is good, and would have deserved better. Since it doesn't take 136 episodes to tell so, i over rated it a little.
First Squad - The Moment Of Truth (OAV) Decent Very good production with, as always, an excellent script, and lots of originalities, some having more effectiveness than others but none straying away from the subject. It's a pity story doesn't really work out, even if i can't really explain why...
Flashback (OAV) Not really good Despite a weak production and a majority of classic scenes, this one has something with the "traumatic sexual experiences healing" -thing
FLCL (OAV) Good Art, animation and script are very good, characters are original, music is decent, while the story/concept... well, i never found anyone who could have it straight the first time. It's all about coming of age symbols, of a particular generation, at high speed and with a lot of trivia references inside which will perhaps don't make any sense if you didn't get high with the same stuff the authors did. To me, a lot of those are here to mask the difficulties they had in being up to the ambitious task they tried to overcome with this show... Still, i can't just rate it "decent", because i'm partially high on this too and i consider you have to see flcl once, just to experience one of those shows where wtf doesn't mean shallowness
Foxy Nudes (OAV) Weak Funny, if not really interesting nor really well produced
Free! - Iwatobi Swim Club (TV) Not really good Very beautiful and nice animated, arguably good production for the rest, story and characters are interesting enough to make more of this show than just one of those tournament things... but even so, it's not really original nor much more than fanserv, so...
Freedom (OAV) Not really good Art is excellent (those backgrounds, whaa), most of the designs are very good, animation is often awkward, but had in its time some merits. The rest of the production is decent, but as the nissin product placement throughout the show, doesn't feel likely at all. Caught between a sf fable where everything could be possible (but without a good story and world creating this kind of ambiance), and a speculative but believable future (but with a lot of credibility issues and over-convenient scripts, even one or two 'true wtf instants'), this oav succeeds in neither. As for other 'products' of this kind, i could say without exaggerating too much : for a commercial, it's excellent, but for an anime series, it's s**t
Fukubiki! Triangle - Miharu After (OAV) So-so Quite classical and decent production, even if there's nothing really original in it
Fullmetal Alchemist (TV) Decent Despite its many qualities and originalities, this one strays too often from the story and in the end, doesn't really makes sense. Still, considering it isn't a straight adaptation of the manga, it's interesting as a different sight on its topics (and thankfully, without too many 'god' crap)
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (TV) Good Technically, i under-rated it. Specially some battles are some of the better animated ones i've ever seen in anime. Story and characters change from the first series, but in an(other) interesting direction, far closer to the manga, and arguably more mature. Despite this, some ideas are just time-buyers and the last episodes are quick-paced but slow as hell considering 'true' action. Though it doesn't spoil the show, i won't be ecstatic about it neither, a too long climax with shallow cliffhangers and pointless scenes isn't right, even if fortunately, they are as well-produced as the rest, so it's easier to swallow. Concerning the ending itself, well... if the destinies of all characters are quite decent and even good written, i can't say i'm fond of the "god" character, who's just here to point that the hero deserves a lot of good stuff and the bad guy's deserve... well i never understood what exactly but it didn't seem to be anything good to me... considering that the story itself gives much better answers, the necessity to invoke a godly creature to have such a poor role isn't clear. Perhaps excessive humility from the author, but even so, the work deserved better. Anyways, if you don't mind seeing 64 episodes of whatever, go on with this one, it's rather inspiring and entertaining !
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (OAV) So-so Funny and arguably interesting, but not as well produced and really important regarding the main series, just a fan add-on i'd say...
Fullmetal Alchemist: The Movie - Conqueror of Shamballa Decent Amusing and well produced, it explores a little deeper the ending plot of the series, which is essentially not a bad idea. Still, always in the same line, the script is often too convenient and not so deep in itself to really be persuasive
Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos (movie) Not really good Production is somewhat good, with yet another different graphics and animation, quite interesting and sometimes very good, on the other hand the cgi is painful. But the true issue is story and scripting, quite below the level of the original works, and making of this one kind of a poor copy, a shame
Future Boy Conan (TV) Good Dated and 'Ghiblish' as it is (not to mention it's pretty much kid-aimed, which could be hard past 10 sometimes), this show has a lot of merits that won't hurt anyone, regardless of their ages and tastes... Besides, if you're interested in H.Miyazaki's works, you'll see a lot of what Nausica and Lapyuta are made of, and even two or three more ideas revolving around the same kind of setting and characters, i dare say. When i see series like this one, alongside the kind of works were produced in these times, i'm not surprised Ghibli was born and so on, i'm surprised it wasn't earlier !
G-spot Express (OAV) So-so Not so good production, with a classic theme and an unsurprising script, even if nothing's really bad
G-taste (OAV) Not really good Quite cheap, but some ideas are decent, and besides, this is most a soft erotica production
Ga-Rei-Zero (TV) Weak Average production, considering the painful cgi and awful designs. Otherwise, everything is quick and bad done, so that not much of the story or characters make any sense (fortunately, it's only 12 episodes)
Gad Guard (TV) Not really good Really nice art, specially designs, good animation most of the time, and a peculiar and somehow original world. Unfortunately story reveals some weaknesses soon enough, and a lot stack until the pointless ending... Scripts have often a bad rhythm and some big errors here and there. Because of that characters, not so bad at first, become quite boring at some point, and specially (as too often in anime, unfortunately) female characters, who are just as nice as over-tamed doggies and intelligent as 3 years old human kids
Gag Manga Biyori (TV) Not really good Sometimes funny, sometimes not, always nonsensical... depending of how much you like Japanese humoristic shows it's watchable
Gakuen 2 (OAV) Weak Another rude boy/milk slave show
Gakuen Alice (TV) Weak Light production and very classic themes don't help this one to stand out, even more when the story and characters have almost nothing original, and what is worse, in a girly++ way of putting it. If watched by children, something good is that there is love regardless of gender throughout the story, but unfortunately, i doubt it was children-aimed, so...
Gala (movie) Weak Visually good and one or two good ideas, unfortunately the script is messed up and the music just don't sounds so good, which is a shame for a nano-story with 90% of music
Galaxy Express 999 (movie) Not really good As it's a piece of archaeology, i over-rated it a little because... Despite having some good ideas, some good designs, some character merits, most of the show is ruined by a weak scripting and unlikelinesses that even a children disbelieves (i, as a 10 year-old, strongly disbelieved Harlock's and 999's stories... seeing them again today, i just fall asleep). Special price for the end of this movie, a good example of all that mustn't be done in an ending (if aiming for a decent one, that is)
Gall Force - Eternal Story (movie) Weak Despite being not so bad in animation, art and some ideas, most of it is dripping annoying dated stuff and make it hard to watch for, eventually, not being so interesting
Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo (TV) So-so The first time i saw this one i couldn't go beyond the first episodes, because of the aesthetics and (supposedly) 'theatrical' overacting and scripting (which aren't at all my favourites, and even considering this a kind of tribute, those flaws suck even in theatre and even centuries ago)... Seeing it a second time, i decided to over-rate it a little, considering it was quite a gamble and ambitious work, even if still not my kind of stuff. There's a lot of good ideas and if you can stand the hard-core-rococo and even close your eyes in the 3d cgi moments, it can be quite a refreshing view on this classic French book...
Gantz (TV) Weak Some characters and the depiction of the dark sides of humanity are pretty well served by the interior dialogues, which are often good. The plot has potential, and that's one of the reasons it's so frustrating to watch this show. I don't know where to start, since there's so much issues... Let's point the graphics, since i've read here and there they're 'good'... Well not really (a shame considering the manga is at least stylish), they're decent in the better moments, rest of the time they're just bad, and i won't even evoke the 3dCGI of those years that, here too, are a pain to the eyes. Animation is awkward, making battle scenes suffer. Well, this ones suffer from scripting too, which is throughout the series kind of... hmm... SLOW AS HELL ! Seriously you'll be lucky if you don't fall asleep seeing those pointless scenes and tons of time-buyers. But above all, story has so little interesting stuff to tell that basically, Gantz is just about fanserv, and supposedly a "dark /evil/psychological" one, failed because hollow, but even though, big-boobs-rhythmless-violence-potential-spoiling fanserv... and that's all
Gasaraki (TV) So-so Very interesting plot and some 'new' good ideas about a classical anime theme, and to make things more cleverly relevant, about Japan (and a lot of its meanings). Unfortunately, there's a lot of weak stuff that just gets in the way (graphically uneven and often bad, some characters are just ridiculous, scripts emphasize non-realistic points, supernatural themes of the plot too shallow, ...) and kind of spoil the experience, a shame...
Genius Party (movie) So-so Great visual work and all... but that's just a clip of not so awesome music
Genmukan: The Sin of Desire & Shame (OAV) So-so Not very well produced, but at least there's a story and some originalities, which is rare in erotica
Genocyber (OAV) Weak Production is nothing special but not without good moments, plot and background are classic but not uninteresting, and yet, it piles up the issues along the way, spoiling the little interest it had
Genshiken (TV) Decent Decent production, with an otaku subculture aim that can annoy at first, but goes beyond that to tell a quite subtle and interesting story most of the time
Genshiken (OAV) So-so Don't really see any major difference with the previous work, helps connecting the two seasons, pretty short and impossible to note separated from those
Genshiken 2 (TV) Decent Different, lightly, but still different : Pointless and incongruous fanserv glimpses, which are kind of annoying ; characters-inspired BL fantasies scenes, which are kind of fun ; and a boost of production values which, even if it doesn't really change overall quality to me, don't hurt. I regret that there isn't any OAV or such to fill the gap between the end of this one and the beginning of the 'second gen' show... but as always, "you just could read the manga" i suppose...
Genshiken: Second Generation (TV) Decent Still a decent to good production, and the new characters have renewed interesting designs... anyways, pretty much as the first series, it's all about otakus and their subculture, even if the plot goes beyond that with success one more time
Geobreeders (OAV) Weak Plot, script, characters, designs are bad, even for a joke, and production isn't really good, but i must admit that in a way this short show is kind of visionary, wtf-ish and perhaps not intentionally, but still... i mean, if one day IAs arise from internet and somehow materialize in physical world, they'll take form into cats with boobs for sure, don't you think ?
Gestalt (OAV) Weak
Ghost in the Shell (movie) Not really good Well some scenes got very nice landscapes, the few good tracks in the ost and a slow contemplative pace that make it quite beautiful, but that's all about it. Even if everything could be considered decent in terms of production, nothing really stands out as it's often told. Setting is a load babbling just here to sound 'deep and cyberpunk' but it's most hollow (as the sequels proved afterwards). The charisma of any single character equals indeed the charisma of a shell (i suppose it's to sound "cold" and "cyborg"-ish... whooo), and though, they spit such cryptic and unsurprising dialogues (i suppose to make it "philosophical" and "human"-ish... whooo) that truly made me wonder if they weren't possessed by that kind of ghosts you won't believe in if you're past five. In a word, this movie isn't awful, but it still extremely pretentious for the little it has to tell
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (TV) Weak Compared to the graphical beauty of some scenes in the movie this show could disappoint, but i think it's a decent production, in all production respects. I may even add that compared to the meaningless movie(s), this series have at least some setting and characters work, which is a serious improvement. Still, to me lead character is unbearably unbearable, likeness of the setting almost never works and some designs (tachikomas for instance) are just so lazy that i wonder what they were thinking... but as so many people likes that sh...stuff, let's say i'm just being provocative. The true issues are from the script and story though. They just buy time with a very poor storyline, using every single technique to make it last 26 episodes, principally side-stories used from decades in police drama with so little, not to say nothing, new inside. And what for ? Babbling nonsense : 60% ; Uncool/Unsuspenseful/Unrequited action scenes : 20% ; Lame jokes between characters : 10% ; Special mix of dubious cgi so-called "hacking" 5% ; Babbling sense, but it doesn't really matter any more : 5%
Ghost Slayers Ayashi (TV) Not really good There are quite good ideas in the setting and characters, even in stories, and it's fairly good produced. Unfortunately, not only those production values aren't always decent (graphic, animation and script quality vary a lot), but more important flaw is direction, often chaotic and spoiling the likeliness of almost every episode by deus ex machina, poor action scenes or bad timing...
(The) Gigolo - Dochinpira (OAV) Bad Despite its compact format, this technically weak and erotically too soft anime is extremely boring
Gilgamesh (TV) Not really good Well, to see this one you'd better not be allergic to gothic aesthetics, nor slow pace and contemplative. Even so, character animation is clumsy, making battle scenes suck. A lot. Despite this, most of the mystery and characters along with some ideas in the setting are nice, even if they come to a rather wtf end. In short : At first boring, then interesting, lastly frustrating...
Girl's Locker Room Lust (OAV) Weak Cheap produced yuri porn, short enough not to care but...
Girls und Panzer (TV) So-so Half tank academy, half moe... The moe side is just as almost always : annoying. Pet-girls with the intelligence of a... well i'd rather just stop here, this kind of use of moe is one of my most-despised things in anime anyways. The other half is amazingly good, and even a non-tank-nerd will discover a lot and enjoy the action sequences as well as the idea of "senshadou" (may seem quite wtf-ish, but is way better than most mecha+tournaments shows), turning a good load of world war stuff in a big fantasy about girls handling big tanks and 'playing' war. Still, even this half of the show is quite spoiled by a lot of over-convenient writing, making the likeness suffer (and again : no, being a fantasy *does not* excuse lack of likeness). I mean what's the point being so damn accurate about the names and designs of tanks for example and having a scenario with, say, tactics and cliffhangers of awful quality ? I'm not asking for realism here, but just a little depth, which is, as for the moe side, almost non-existent here, under the lazy pretext of being a wtf show... Can't say it works for me
Gokujyo. Gokurakuin Joshi Kōryō Monogatari (TV) So-so Stupid, but at least characters are girls and not 100% brainless pets... plus, it's a mere hour long and doesn't really have any technical flaws so i can't rate it so low
(The) Gokusen (TV) Decent Technically not so good, this show deserves some respect for the interesting characters and their, therefore, not-so-common relationships. I just regret they softened this theme a lot, but it's quite common in anime, and besides, it's still fun to see it once (even if it could be said as always, that manga version is more interesting)
Gold Throbber (OAV) Weak Nothing more than a weak porn show, despite some hopes here and there, but never fulfilled
Golden Time (TV) So-so Good production, sometimes even very good, though i can't be fan of the aesthetics (as most of the designs here), so i don't really think i can consider that 'good' in the first place if i had to be 100% honest... The same goes with the characters, i just put in some examples : Kouko loves people like psychos do (which is unfortunately very popular in 3d world too btw), Chinami is full of moe (that's not so common irl, but hey, it's anime, so shut up and swallow it, remembering just the rare moments she's more than that), Banri is most of the time a complete caricature (so you're an amnesic over-loved boy that... yeah, that's a new concept) with awful tastes (i mean, Kouko...), Linda is nice but too often just one of those sacrificial girls caricature (her attitude is more and more unlikely as the story goes on) ; rest of the cast seeming to me just parts of the machinery without a lot of credibility (oh well... of course i like a lot Nana, but there's no room for anything serious about her here and, i must say, fortunately for her). But it's also true that if i say all that, it's because i just never liked, that kind of depiction of so-called "ordinary people", and this show is surprisingly good enough to turn those characters into common college students or whatever fools they're supposed to be, thus making me being as annoyed by them as i were irl. Story is kind of coldly calibrated to just work as a sentimental show must, which is a technical success (sadly, quite uncommon), but not a lot more. Ending sucks, but what have i expected ?
Grope - Yami no naka no Kotori-tachi (OAV) Not really good The weak production is kind of saved by the not so common setting and characters, even if it doesn't turn it in an good show
GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka (TV) Decent Despite low-level production values (can't say i like those graphics, music and so on..) and some annoying details (main character is far too conveniently served by the script, some poor obsessions about what "manly" stuff should be, some weak second roles), this show got enough good points to be entertaining, and i can't just spoil them all. Well, just one : through the story and at more than one occasion, the ideas about education and its goals in a way of life point of view (specially in the Japanese case, but easily globalized) are not so common and pretty deep despite the looks.
Guin Saga (TV) Not really good Mostly a waste of time, but so raw that's almost a funny waste, so i over-rated it. Production value vary a lot (for instance sometimes battle animations and art are very good, sometimes almost bad...). On a same way, sometimes there are ambitious ideas and characters designs, but often they're just laughably ridiculous, as they are put into cheap clichés so strong that hollywood will seem underground for some time after seeing this. The most serious issue being story, an attempt to create an epic saga, but rarely believable nor interesting because of the poor writing... makes me think of a low-quality RPG (but obviously without any gameplay, which makes it a lot worse). I must add that, as often with 'epic' fantasy, there's a bunch of arguably offensive ideas (racism, sexism, and the like), though i doubt authors were sincere (or smart) enough to have done it intentionally, so i wouldn't care so much. Ending sucks, btw, so watch it for the sake of irony and stop it when it can't make you grin any more...
Gungrave (TV) Not really good It seems to me that's all about an ode to some hollywood pictures (once upon a time in America, the godfather, ...) mixed with some sf (just to bash monsters with super powers, nothing mandatory). Technically decent, because despite some lacks of quality, some originalities balance them, it kind of succeeds to stick to this general idea. Unfortunately, there's nothing original in the mix of the two concepts, the mixing itself isn't very catchy, nor the classic references have anything more than their originals, and even worse, they often exaggerate their issues (stupid female characters, caricatural male attitudes, convenient scripting, unlikely political intrigues,...). Could have been nice, and i suppose to some it is, but i got bored fast enough, even if i managed to reach the (fortunately so-called 'unhappy') end just for the sake of it
Gunslinger Girl (TV) Not really good This is a show with quite surprising pace and ambience, far from what i expected from a 'girls with guns' show, and that's a nice surprise. It seemed to me the aim was to depict kind a metaphor of what super soldiers will be in the future, and more specifically what the psychological issues will be. As far as that, it's ok since it's decently produced and characters aren't totally uninteresting. Still, characters suffer of the "cuteness axis" chosen to create contrast with the 'killer robot' type (if you like cute children ignore this sentence, i guess) ; and story has critical weaknesses. I'd say the main one is to lack any true story to tell to begin with (more a collection of short and mostly superficially quick-written episodes), which added to the slow pace and sad atmosphere could put me to sleep easily. Another one is that, since there's a great deal of realistic emphasis, same-level improbable points abound too (how can people ignore the existence of children killers after all those not really stealth missions, how can this or that gun be used in a wrong context/way, how far can background stray from European history, ...?) eventually wasting likelihood. Lastly, and more personally, what this show tells about government agencies and who they fight is *very* naive, at that point that it's clearly ideologically influenced and not in a way i think it could do any good...
Gunslinger Girl: Il Teatrino (TV) Weak Despite some improvements at first sight, the story can't make it, and moe c**p takes over a lot more than in the first show, so it's pointless. End episode is a pathetic example of laziness and nonsense, hope nobody see it
Gunsmith Cats (OAV) Good A perfect example of what a not so bad show can become with a little work. Technically decent (with even some nice animations at times), the characters, setting and story aren't anything original but they're funny, likely and not a stupidity concentrate, three rare qualities in similar anime. Difficult to rate it too high though, since it's kind of archetypal this far, there's only three episodes, and i don't really know how it would have been if longer, but it would have deserved it much more than tens of others...
Guyver: Out of Control (movie) Not really good Yeah it's technically cheap (could even say bad), as often with those times anime but, at least it's short and straightforward in its wtf-lol way... but not unforgettable even from this point of view
Haibane Renmei (TV) So-so A very nice production, with promising setting and characters. It has a light, poetic, and, in the end, very poor/coherent content, which is an option, and not a bad one in itself (i, too, don't always need explanations and an over-consistent background to appreciate a work). The drawback of this option is that it greatly emphasizes the subjectiveness of the story, and when this one doesn't suit you, well... it makes it worse. Even if not that bad (but enough to feel decently frustrated) i was annoyed by the heavy morals (religious or not) and very partial definitions of such big words as "kindness", "guilt" and "sin" (among others) that the show throws continuously at the characters while, in the same time, the world surrounding them has so little deepness that it makes almost not any sense. Even if i kind of understand what they tried to do, and must admit succeed in more than a few points, i feel like they failed when assuming their beliefs will do some magic to the script. To me, it just didn't. I just got the impression of sharing some slices (the 'interesting' ones from their point of view, which is a strong bias) of the nun's life in a countryside convent. It happens that i visited those kind of places some times irl, and even if i sure can't say it's something i hate, it's definitely not something i want to do so much, nor i'm sure to agree with (when it comes to morals) in the first place.
Hakaba Kitarō (TV) So-so A great improvement over the gegege series i've seen, with originality values and a decent to good production. Unfortunately, stories seemed to me somehow plain and in the en not so interesting. Still, i feel it can be an under rated statement so, see some to tell, could work.
Hanada Shōnen-shi (TV) Very good Simple, yet deep show, overall, a thing that simply requires hard work and inspiration to achieve, things that they had there. Most valuable if you're on retro-japan and/or family-slice-of-life, but still interesting for anyone.
Happy Machine (movie) So-so Nice art and animation, weird but with clear messages, worth seeing if you're not against visual poetry
Jikū Bōken Nūmamonjaa (OAV) Not really good Over-rated, just because i'm kind of fan of the video game. Even so, this will make laugh the stupider of us and will just have the good point of making us play it again and/or wonder how great would have been a true manga and why not anime adaptation...
Kids on the Slope (TV) Decent Very good production (art, animation, music and so on), with a kind of historic setting and some uncommon ideas popping from time to time out of the classic setting/plot. Characters are interesting, but for the main female one who isn't at the same level. Even if not excellent, it's a good work, but i have to say that i felt it wasn't done with passion, as if it was just another adaptation... perhaps it would have been better if they had truly rewrote the script instead of making a 'good product', why not for instance focusing more on the period background and music topics, which are frustratingly shallow
Kimi no Na o Yobeba (OAV) So-so Weak production but interesting psychological view on a lightly weird fantasy... That's not enough to make a good show out of it, though.
Kyūketsuki (OAV) So-so Not very original plot or ambiances, but the second episode is graphically interesting, and the content is extreme enough to be a good match with those twisted animations and art... though i regret a little it focuses on a single fantasy
A Letter to Momo (movie) Weak Art and animation are awesome, and technically, this show is very good. Unfortunately, story, characters and so on are just a marketed product without taste nor interest, all is left is shallow eye candy...
Limit Cycle (movie) Bad I rated it low, because i don't agree with he the author's point of view : We shouldn't judge exceptions strictly but fairly, i mean, we didn't create god for ourselves, those who know god don't truly desire him, and moreover this art don't clarify the relationship between principles, lust isn't a voluntary intention, plus, if you don't know your own sins you won't lose heart, so anyways for 4000 years people won't continue to prophesize about his coming, it's as if... er... sorry, i just forgot what i was saying because of those photoshoped lips coming out my screen, help ! More seriously, this is wtf category, don't watch it in a normal state of consciousness to prevent brain damage or, more likely, shut down
Love Bitch (OAV) So-so Pretty good (but classical) porn, no much more however
Lupin III: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine (TV) Good Impressive graphics, animation, and sometimes even rhythm/script. For its length, a worth-seeing anime, even if it's often messy and almost always a little too "deus-ex-machina-rian" concerning the story.
Magical Witch Punie-chan (OAV) So-so Rather decent parody, with nice graphics and animation and a good sense of humour if you're the martial style... well, this said, it's short and not so unforgettable (i already don't remember 99% of it -_-')
Mission-E (TV) Decent Quite the same as the first gig, plus not-so-bad action scenes and a pretty much decent and complete story. Ideas and scripting still a little too soft, but it's anime after all so it's ok. Despite the production flaws and a often messy pace, i enjoyed it better and must admit it has more merits than it appears at the first glance.
Moondrive (movie) Decent Good production, fun story and characters, but very short and not so original eventually
Noein - to your other self (TV) Not really good At first it's kinda good, i mean art, animation and characters have some very good moments and the setting is quite appealing. Then, around the middle of the series, story begins to make less and less sense (basically how an inter-dimensional frustrated guy bullies a single and defenceless dimension just for the sake of it), of course climaxing in an uninteresting ending. Sad, with a little effort, the first half could have been written into a nice story.
Papa Love (OAV) Weak A classic fantasy, a not-so-bad production, but the better about it's to be short.
Paranoia Agent (TV) Very good Not only very good production, but very very funny. As often with Kon's works, the most eccentric and exaggerated imagination serve the purpose of depicting the most banal and accurate realities, with so good an alchemy that it just works. At any rate, there's no specific unity in this one, but most a succession of one-shots around one mechanic. Again, the purpose is to entertain with true caricature talent, and it definitely does, but doesn't carry much more than that (and to me, it's rare enough)
Ping Pong (TV) Good The story, characters, scripting, art, animation,... are good, and far beyond the ping pong world. Even though, i don't consider it being the best of the author's works, and therefore, of the anime adaptations, but eh, i'm happy enough to see one that actually did it and with even some originalities.
Robotics;Notes (TV) Not really good What a disappointment ! After Steins;Gate, to perpetrate such a thing... so sad ! Well, production is good, and somehow the first half works, though even at this point the lack of inspiration is clear : characters are not so well designed (kind of classical, at best and sometimes plainly caricatural), story is less likely (back to high school = more intimate, forward to save the entire planet from terrorists = edenoftheeast-ish, thus the gap becomes wider, which is dangerous), and there aren't much delusion/reality elements (which are the best thing in the other works). But the final blow are the last episodes, where the story reveals the extent of the joke it is (even the lame Chaos;Head plot was more relevant), the characters falling from common to just low-quality empty shells, and therefore almost everything else becoming pointless, well i ended just praying for it to finish as quickly as possible. Seriously, i feel 'not really good' is over-rated, but for the sake of the first half i felt sorry
Samurai Harem (TV) Not really good Nothing new in this one, even the bushi theme is such a caricature... that even the good production hardly makes of it an average show. Still, situations and dialogues are often funny, specially the first episodes, so i felt like over-rating it a little.
School of Masochists (OAV) Not really good Weak graphics and animation, and quite classic themes, but script and characters aren't so bad, so it's kind of watchable.
Sex Craft (OAV) Not really good Not so bad erotic production, even if not unforgettable
Sex Starved Nurses (OAV) Not really good Nothing new here, but not a bad work neither, maybe because of the horror-like atmosphere...
Shanghai Dragon (movie) Decent Nice job, entertaining and well-produced, even if not very ambitious nor deep
Shape of Love: Do You Hate Girls With Dirty Minds? (OAV) Good Graphics, animation and plot are decent, and characters are quite plausible. Even if i can't say there is anything 'new' in that anime, the voyeur/exhibitionist fantasy has convinced me more in this one that in a lot of others.
Space Adventure Cobra (TV) Not really good Dated material, take a look if you're on archaeology or nostalgia ^^ Well, the first third of this series is quite funny and decent, even considering some art and animation issues, not-so-original stories and the crazy mix of a star wars + james bond setting (+ un j.p.belmondo en héros ;) ), with of course their flaws. Unfortunately, the last thirds have stupider stories and more issues (yeah, really), so it gets very boring...
Steins;Gate (TV) Very good It's quite over-rated for people who aren't quite familiar with anime-game-etc / nerdy memes of a specific generation / period, as it was the case for Chaos;Head... but i felt like rating it this high anyway because it's better, and surprisingly far more brighter, which is difficult to do correctly. Without spoiling, let's say just what i think is so-so/weak and assume the rest is good, to very-good level. First, some characters aren't so interesting, even if all of them are a play on codes of the harem / dating visual novel genres, they're often miss the point or become too unsurprising soon enough. Linked to that issue, the scripting is perhaps a little too game-ish, which is audacious and cool, but risky, and from time to time the "mandatory" game scenes can be kind of strange in an anime rhythm, some other times it's quite well done, so there's a way. Last, what i've said at the beginning, it's quite fan-aimed stuff, which is ok, but not always the better way to put the ideas in a show. Nor the better they can do if they managed to express all the good ideas they have already... Again, there's room for improvement, since there's a way of making evolve some plain and sometimes pathetic moe-commercial-nerdy concepts to a far above level without forgetting their origins, and this show could be an important step to show this way. Hope they'll go on !
(The) Tale of the Princess Kaguya (movie) Decent Beautiful, well-made and somehow original in its ode to "classical" Japanese art. Unfortunately, a lot of symbols and feelings are lost for those like me who didn't have the background and/or insight of the tale in advance, and little is done to make the story captivating or truly personal, so it was kind of frustrating, or, at least pleasant but not unforgivable...
Tales from Earthsea (movie) Not really good Excellent production, and with a very fresh and interesting first fantasy half, including a good idea about the lead character's mind... Unfortunately, everything is spoiled along the second half, where conventional stuff pops from everything and it just gets boring and even wtf sometimes (what's the point with the dragons, anyone understood ?). I suppose the background was either too shallow or too deep to make it likely in a 2 hours movie, but in both cases it's kind of a failed attempt...
Time of Eve (ONA) Not really good Good production (graphics, animation, editing and so on), not so bad plot (asimov-ish slice of life-style), but not very original nor deep, so despite the 6 short episodes duration, it manages to get kind of boring at times
Tohai Densetu Akagi -Yamini Maiorita Tensai- (TV) Good I would have rated it So-so if i hadn't any interest for games (against humans), or gambling. And yet it could sound weird when you know that 80% of the anime is mahjong playing (even if i must say that 'mahjong playing' is suspense, psychology and battle, at the very least...), but, just, graphics, animation, characters, storyline, originality... everything is good/very good, and sometimes even better than that. But, again, it's 80% of playing, ok ?
Tojin Kit (movie) Decent Visually excellent, world/atmosphere seems very good and at least it has some script... anyways, it's far too shallow to know for sure
A Tree of Palme (movie) Decent Animation and art are good. Story and characters are weak unfortunately, but the ideas about them aren't so bad.
(The) Vision of Escaflowne (TV) Weak Production is decent, with some good and bad points, but kind of ok. Would have been even a good show but... Again, good inspiration is wasted by a lot of issues, the worst being the more classic deus ex machina on earth : "fate". "Fate" is the kind of word that most hurt any kind of fiction when it's used to patch a flaw in the scripts, characters, dialogues, you name it... and here, it's almost said at every one of the first episodes, and at every minute of the second half, always to hide the lack of serious writing
Wanwa the Puppy (movie) Weak Despite some original art and animation, there's really nothing special about this one, and what is worse, it fails to make any sense
A Wind Named Amnesia (movie) Not really good Memory-loss idea is a quite good one. The rest is quite common.
(The) Wind Rises (movie) Excellent Not far away from a masterpiece, a shame the director announced his retirement (one more time), but happy he'll do manga again, because here he shows a slightly different way that can lead to even better works... well if better is possible, this man and his crew make you feel they definitely could do it ! The movie itself... well, it could seem less children-aimed than past ones (though i feel this scope is twisted) ; there's some frustration that there's not more contents about the war period itself, could have been very interesting (even if it would have been a different writing sacrificing the strong points of this one) ; and i doubt the insistence on pathos (of the love story) will still have a point after some views (but that's common sense whit those things)
Wolf's Rain (TV) Not really good Production is on slightly above-average level, and the wolf thematics as they are could have been really nice. But everything in this show could have been better and i can't help thinking about it 20 times per episode, and that spoils the experience. Story isn't so bad, but script is bad and even awful at times ; characters aren't bad archetypes, but they relay everything on script, and as i said earlier, that's a bad idea ; last but not least, the design most of the characters have is just plainly ridiculous... Could be ok if you're fond of wolves, and even so, don't expect them to have anything true wolves have.
xxxHOLiC (TV) Very good Best clamp i've seen. Design, ambiances and tropes justify themselves subtly, thanks to the simple and yet rich plots and scripting. As a bonus, you'll probably live a shorter and better life, giving in to the Japanese food and alcohol temptation, which lore is here depicted in such a nice way, you won't resist long...(i could've said the same for Japanese folklore, but this theme is way more common in anime) Still, it's quite adult themes, and revolves around the same character's relationships over and over, which is arguably boring, even if i find those themes and characters appealing enough to make up for it ; besides, graphics and animation are uneven, but this is not such a visual work to begin with... unlike the manga indeed, but i won't do such a poor thing like rate anime comparing it to the manga which inspired it.
xxxHOLiC: Kei (TV) Very good Stories are more interesting, but relationships between characters stay the same 'till a little before the end, so it's quite the same as the first gig.
Zettai Shonen (TV) Very good Very good ideas and well-designed atmospheres... perhaps a little slow but, it makes sense in the end.
