3x3 Eyes (OAV) Good
3x3 Eyes Seima Densetsu (OAV) Good
Adieu Galaxy Express 999 (movie) Very good
Afro Samurai (TV) Good It's pretty much what you'd expect it to be and is exactly what the trailers lead you to believe it is so people who complain about how it is all style with little substance should have figured that out before going into it. All and all, it's an entertaining series and the fight scenes are entertaining to watch and while the series as a whole is definitely not a masterpiece, it's certainly not the worst series out there. Overall, an entertaining and amusing hour and a half worth of content.
Afro Samurai: Resurrection (movie) Decent It's nowhere near as entertaining as the first one, and the writing isn't really that good, but I guess its okay. Probably not something I'd ever want to watch again though.
Ai City (movie) Good
Akira (movie) Decent Overall, i'd say that it is a decent movie and innovative for its time and all that other stuff. However, after reading the manga, I'd have to say that the manga so superior to this movie in just about every conceivable way that it renders the movie obsolete, to me at least. Still probably worth seeing a few times, though it suffers greatly from trying to cram too much stuff into a two-hour slot, but I guess the movie is still okay.
Alien from the Darkness (OAV) Good
Alien Nine (special) Decent
Amon - Apocalypse of Devilman (OAV) Weak
Angel Cop (OAV) Not really good I didn't expect a masterpiece out of this, given it's rather infamous reputation but I will say that it was an amusing series, at least at first. After a while it just started getting old, and I think I lost most of my interest once Angel went from being a heartless tough-as-nails bitch with no regard for anyone else's life to a loving, compassionate character, a change that came very abruptly and with little discernible reason...at least as far as I could see; it just wasn't as much fun after that point.
Angel's Egg (movie) Good
Apocalypse Zero (OAV) Bad Basically, some guy in a stupid-looking power rangers outfit battling a bunch of monsters who use their genitals as weapons in various creative ways. It was amusing at first, but it quickly grew very old and the anime has nothing else to offer, whatsoever. Dialogue (at least in the subtitles) were very cheesy, corny, and cringeworthy, the story isn't all that interesting, and the characters aren't interesting in the least. I guess the artwork is all right. Otherwise save your money unless this is something you have to see out of morbid curiosity (which was why I had ordered it from Amazon.com in the first place). I'm just glad this thing was only two episodes, though I doubt you could stretch such a concept any longer than that. It should've been a flash cartoon found on the Internet that lasts five minutes or so; if it had been I probably wuold've liked it more.
Area 88 (OAV) Very good A very compelling story with very well-developed characters and well choreographed aerial combat as well and it has some good artwork and animation as well, especially for 1985 standards. The ending kind of leaves you hanging, though on the other hand it's pretty obvious what's going to happen next.
Arion (movie) Good
Arjuna (TV) Worst ever Environmentalist themes and aesops in anime don't offend or bother me. I really enjoyed Blue Gender and Green Legend Ran, but Arjuna was just way, WAY too heavy on the preachiness and unlike the other two mentioned animes which had solid stories and characterization, this one seemed to be created mainly for the creators to pound their views into the viewer's heads with little regard for anything else. I'll admit that I pretty much knew this going into the series and I basically only watched it because of a lost bet, but it's still worth mentioning it about this series, and basically, if you agree with its views 100%, you'll love it, but if you're not that extreme about it, you'll probably end up hating it and will at best be really bored with it a great deal of the time.
Armitage III (OAV) Excellent
Armor Hunter Mellowlink (OAV) Good
Armored Trooper Votoms (TV) Very good
Armored Trooper Votoms: Big Battle (OAV) Good
Armored Trooper Votoms: Pailsen Files (OAV) Good
Armored Trooper Votoms: Red Shoulder Document - Roots of Treachery (OAV) Good
Armored Trooper Votoms: The Heretic Saint (OAV) Good
Armored Trooper Votoms: The Last Red Shoulder (OAV) Very good
Ayakashi - Samurai Horror Tales (TV) Good
Baccano! (TV) Decent
Banner of the Stars (TV) Decent Not really as good as Crest of the Stars or Banner of the Stars II but I guess it's okay. I suppose the battles were decent but there wasn't much else there; would have liked to see more character development for Jinto and Lafiel aside from them reflecting on events we already saw in Crest of the Stars, and most of the other characters, while they might have piqued my interest initially, got old fairly quickly. Overall, worth seeing, but definitely the weakest link in the series.
Banner of the Stars II (TV) Very good
Banner of the Stars III (OAV) Decent
Barefoot Gen (movie) Very good
Basilisk (TV) Excellent
Battle Can Can (OAV) One of the most hillarious animes I think I've ever seen.
Berserk (TV 1997) Good Artwork might not be the best but isn't really that bad either, though I initially thought the anime was a bit older than 1997. Animation-wise, there is movement most of the time, but there are times when it feels like you are reading a graphic novel that has an audio track. The music is really good and helps to immerse you into the world of Berserk. The three main characters: Guts, Caska, and Griffith are all very interesting and well developed and for the most part the storyline is interesting as well, though I definitely prefer the manga to the anime, as there is a lot more content in the manga and the manga actually gives a conclusion rather than simply cutting things off with a cliffhanger. Worth checking out, but I'd suggesting going with the manga for this one.
Black Lagoon (TV) Good
Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage (TV) Good
Blood+ (TV) Excellent
Blood: The Last Vampire (movie) Good
Blue Gender (TV) Excellent The quality of the artwork and animation starts to suffer about half-way through the series, but otherwise I have absolutely no complaints whatsoever. The two lead characters are very well-developed, and while this type of story has been done countless times before, its well executed here and still very compelling.
Blue Sonnet (OAV) Very good
Boogiepop Phantom (TV) Very good Very confusing anime, especially the first time you watch it, but I found the stories to be good once I was finally able to at least somewhat understand what is going on with them. Still find it to be very confusing at some parts though.
Casshern Sins (TV) Decent
Cat Soup (OAV) Decent
Chaos;HEAd (TV) Decent
Cobra The Animation: The Psychogun (OAV) Good
Cobra The Animation: Time Drive (OAV) Decent
Cowboy Bebop (TV) Decent Definitely the most overrated anime of all time but still entertaining to watch, though as with any series comprised of mostly standalone episodes, some of the episodes are better than others.
Crest of the Stars (TV) Very good
Crusher Joe: The Movie Good
Crusher Joe: The OVA's Good
Cyber City Oedo 808 (OAV) Good
Cybernetics Guardian (OAV) Decent Artwork and animation are really good. The 80s rock musical score absolutely does not work at all for what is happening in this anime. Fight scenes are still cool to watch despite this. Characterization isn't anything to write home about but is decent considering its only 40 minutes. The characters probably could have been better developed with a longer running time, and the story and plot could have really benefited from a longer running time as well, as there are a lot of things I would have liked to have seen developed better. All in all, while certain aspects could definitely have been handled better, I found it entertaining to watch, and for $10 or less, you really can't go wrong.
Dallos (OAV) Decent
Death Note (TV) Good
Demon City Shinjuku (OAV) Good
Devilman (OAV) Decent
Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei (OAV)
Doomed Megalopolis (OAV) Weak
Elfen Lied (TV) Excellent
Elfen Lied (OAV) Good Not as good as the series and not required viewing to enjoy anything having to do with the main TV series, but if you're a major Elfen Lied fan then its definitely worth viewing, especially if you've ever been curious about how they got Lucy into that lab in the first place.
Ergo Proxy (TV) Good
Fight! Iczer-One (OAV) Good
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (movie) Bad Well the movie started off decently enough and I guess the artwork is pretty good but everything else about this movie sucks. I never played the game so maybe if I had my opinion would be different, but suffice it to say I didn't care about any of the characters at all, the movie didn't seem to have any point, and even the fight scenes were completely stupid. I really wish I could get my money and my time back that this disaster of a movie stole from me.
Fire Tripper (OAV) Decent
Fist of the North Star (movie) Decent
Freedom (OAV) Decent
Future Boy Conan (TV) Very good
Galaxy Express 999 (movie) Very good
Gall Force - Eternal Story (movie) Weak The artwork and animation are excellent. The battles are epic and well choreographed. And that's about the only good thing I can really say about this. It's the type of thing that could have been pretty good but unfortunately wasn't really that good. In the beginning we're basically just thrown into this huge space battle and we don't really know what's going on and this lasts for a half hour, before a bunch of other shorter "stories" happen. There isn't so much a plot to this as there are a series of events, some of which are sort of connected sloppily together, each one having the potential to be good if only they were handled better. I wasn't really expecting good character development given the running time and the amount of characters in it, but basically you don't care about anyone in this at all, and just when someone is about to get interesting, the movie just gets rid of them, either by killing them or making it so for whatever reason we never hear from them again.
Gantz (TV) Decent It's a good show overall and a really cool idea, but it has way too many problems for it to come anywhere close to being a masterpiece. For one thing, there's the ending, which I won't disclose here but will still say that it is lousy. Pacing problems also really hurt the series tremendously, especially during scenes in which the characters are in the middle of a fight and arguing about whether they should save someone, while the monsters/aliens just stand there, and time itself seems frozen. It would also be nice to have found out exactly why they needed to fight these aliens in the first place as the aliens don't really do anything and don't get violent unless they are either defending themselves or seeking revenge for another alien being killed, but perhaps this is revealed later on in the manga. The anime has its good points as well, though: The artwork and animation for the most part is really good though at times it does seem way too obvious that the hand-drawn characters are being placed over computer generated environments, which is pretty weird. The environments themselves though are often beautifully rendered. While most of the participants in Gantz are killed off before they are able to emerge as anything other than one-dimensional stereotypes, the three main lead characters are all well developed and the character Nishi is really interesting as well. Also, if you have a really sick and perverted sense of humor, then you'll probably really enjoy Gantz as well. Overall, a good, worthwhile series, but the problems mentioned herein really hinder it from reaching its full potential.
Genocyber (OAV) Excellent This has to be the most underrated series I've ever seen. Yes, there is a ton of violence and gore, which I don't think there is anything wrong with, but that's just me, but if you pay close enough attention, it does have a plot. Rather, there are about three different storylines spread across 5 episodes, each one about 45 minutes in length, and there is enough character development so that I cared about what happened with them, at least; they might have been better fleshed out if the stories were longer, but the plots didn't call for longer than about 45 minutes so that's okay.
Ghost in the Shell (movie) Very good I didn't really like this movie too much the first time I saw it, but I really enjoyed it the second time I watched it as I was able to understand things better on my second viewing. It also helps to have seen the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex TV series so the main characters will be more familiar to you and you will probably care about them more than if you hadn't seen the show, even though the show and this movie are in two separate timelines or parallel universes, or whatever.
Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (movie) Very good
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (TV) Good
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd GIG (TV) Very good
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex: Solid State Society (movie) Good
Goku II - Midnight Eye (OAV) Good
Goku: Midnight Eye (OAV) Good
Grave of the Fireflies (movie) Excellent
Green Legend Ran (OAV) Excellent Okay so the artwork is definitely not impressive so if you watch anime solely for the art you probably won't like this one, but the storyline is really good and really well-done and the characters are too, so its definitely worth seeing and buying. I also think it deserves a much better DVD release than what it currently has but at least we have something.
Hellsing (TV) Decent I guess it's just one of those series that just didn't click for me. Some of the episodes were pretty good, but after about the halfway point it just went downhill.
Higurashi no Naku Koroni Gaiden Nekogoroshi-hen (OAV) Decent
Iczer Reborn (OAV) So-so
Infinite Ryvius (TV) Decent
Iria - Zeiram the Animation (OAV) Good
Jin-Roh - The Wolf Brigade (movie) Decent
Justy (OAV) Bad
Jyu-Oh-Sei (TV) Decent I'd probably give it a 3 out of 5 stars, simply because I thought the first five episodes were pretty good, but didn't enjoy episodes 6 - 11 as much; it's still worth watching in its entirety if you're a sci-fi/fantasy fan, and I did think it was a decent series overall, but it's probably not something I'd ever want to watch again.
Kino's Journey (TV) Good As with any episodic series, some of the episodes are better than other ones, and given the structure of these episodes, a lot of them probably didn't need to be a full 20 minutes, considering you're presented with a situation followed by a twist, but it's still an interesting series nonetheless and definitely worth watching.
(The) Laughing Target (OAV) Very good
Leda - The Fantastic Adventure of Yohko (OAV) So-so
Lily C.A.T. (OAV) Good
M.D. Geist (OAV) Awful As bad as the English dub was, the Japanese voice acting for this was even worse and if I can tell that acting in a foreign language is bad, then it's BAD! Aside from that, it's like they put no effort into this whatsoever, like they didn't even try and they just didn't care. The artwork and animation even for 1986 standards is just atrociously horrible. The premise, while definitely lacking in originality, could have been developed a lot better and could have been a lot more interesting if only the creators cared enough to bother. The only reason to bother with this one would be out of morbid curiosity to see just how bad an anime can get.
M.D. Geist II - Death Force (OAV) Bad Slightly better than the first, and the quality of the artwork and animation are a little bit better, but it still pretty much sucks.
Maetel Legend (OAV) Decent
Maris the Chojo (OAV)
Memories (movie) Good Favorite one here would be Magnetic Rose but all of the stories are interesting in their own way.
Mermaid Forest (OAV) Very good
Mermaid Forest (TV) Very good
Mermaid's Scar (OAV) Very good
Millennium Actress (movie)
Mononoke (TV) Good
Monster (TV) Very good
Mr. Arashi's Amazing Freak Show (movie) Decent
Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV) Good
Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion (movie) Good
Ninja Ryūkenden (OAV) Decent Ninja Gaiden OVA from 1991. It's an anime based on a video game, and it's a 50-minute one-episode OVA, so with those two strikes against it, I really didn't have very high expectations going into it. The artwork and animation are pretty good and the fight scenes are fairly entertaining to watch. The storyline isn't that good, though I guess it's acceptable considering the length. The characters of Ryu and Irene bare almost no resemblance to their NES counterparts, however, and Ryu doesn't even wear his mask when fighting in this OVA, like he does in just about every Ninja Gaiden game made, both old and new.
Ninja Scroll (movie) Good
Noein - to your other self (TV) Very good I have some issues with the series such as with the sloppy character designs and things of that nature, but the storyline is still very good and it brings up some very interesting theoretical concepts.
Now and Then, Here and There (TV) Excellent
Once Upon a Time (movie) Good
Pale Cocoon (OAV) Very good
Paprika (movie) Good
Paranoia Agent (TV) Very good
Perfect Blue (movie) Very good
Pet Shop of Horrors (TV) Very good
Phoenix (TV) Decent
Princess Mononoke (movie) Good
Psycho Diver: Soul Siren (OAV) Decent
Queen Millennia Movie Weak
R.O.D -The TV- Good
RahXephon (TV) Good
Read or Die (OAV) Good
Record of Lodoss War (OAV) Good
Robot Carnival (OAV) Good
Roots Search (OAV) Good More like so bad its good, at least for me anyway.
Rurouni Kenshin: Reflection (OAV) Awful I thought the Trust & Betrayal OVA was okay, but Reflections was absolutely horrible and pointless. The characters seriously don't do *anything* but cry about stuff that happened in the past and showing vague flashbacks of what happened during the Kenshin TV series as well as the Trust & Betrayal OVA; it probably doesn't help that I absolutely *despise* recap episodes and clip shows. A complete waste of time and had I been a huge Rurouni Kenshin fan, I probably would have been completely outraged at this travesty. I haven't even seen the TV show; however, from what I've read though, the crap that the characters were lamenting and crying about was supposed to have actually been *resolved* in the TV series, which, if true, would really poke some serious plot holes and continuity issues into the very premise of this OVA. In any case, I found this OVA to be just barely watchable and despite the tragic ending, I was so happy it was over. What a joke.
Rurouni Kenshin: Trust & Betrayal (OAV) So-so Feels very choppy in the first episode and the middle is dragged out a bit too much, but the overall storyline was pretty good and the fight scenes are really cool to watch. The artwork and animation are both topnotch. Overall, this is definitely not one of my favorite animes, but it's an okay series overall.
Serial Experiments Lain (TV) Decent
Shadow (OAV) Very good
Space Adventure Cobra (TV) Good
Space Adventure Cobra - The Movie Very good
Speed Grapher (TV) Very good
Spriggan (movie) Good
Strait Jacket (OAV) Good
Texhnolyze (TV) Good
Tokko (TV) Good The series has its flaws and the ending is pretty weak but overall this is a pretty good gorey horror series. Not the best out there but still pretty good and worth your time if you enjoy these types of animes.
Tokyo Godfathers (movie)
Trigun (TV) Decent Way too silly and annoying in the first half for my taste and it takes much too long to get to the main story but the second half is much better and far less annoying. Far from my favorite series, but it's still pretty decent and maybe worth watching. Some very interesting stuff toward the final 10 or so episodes. Artwork and animation are well done and it does a good job with what it is going for.
Trinity Blood (TV) Not really good I had really high hopes for this series and the concept sounded like something I would really enjoy, but ultimately I just couldn't get into it. Some of the episodes were decent, though nothing spectacular, but many of them, particularly the last few just didn't do anything for me. None of the characters were really all that interesting or well-developed. Unfortunately this series just didn't work for me, but it seems to be one of those animes that people either love or hate, so other people reading this might enjoy it.
Twilight Q (OAV) Weak
Umezu Kazuo no Noroi (OAV) Decent
Vampire Hunter D (OAV) Good The artwork is definitely not impressive though its good enough for 1985 standards. The storyline is your standard Vampire story but it is well told and they keep things interesting throughout so it might be worth seeing but I can definitely understand why a lot of people hate this series.
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (movie) Excellent Very beautifully drawn and animated. Not as violent or gory as the first one but still plenty of action. Story is slightly similar to the first one, but far more complex, with a lot of moral ambiguity, making it difficult to distinguish who is truly good and who is truly evil, which makes things that much more interesting.
Venus Wars (movie) So-so I might have liked it more when I was 12; I don't know. I didn't think it was really all that great, special, or memorable, though. The artwork was good, especially for an 80s anime. The plot didn't really interest or engage me though, and all of the characters were one-dimensional and not really the least bit interesting. Overall, it's not the worst anime ever made, but I wasn't impressed with it either.
Violence Jack (OAV) Weak
Violence Jack 2 (OAV) Decent
Violence Jack 3 (OAV) Decent
Voices of a Distant Star (OAV) Well-made OVA but it just wasn't my cup of tea.
When They Cry - Higurashi (TV) Good
When They Cry - Kai (TV) Not really good
A Wind Named Amnesia (movie) Very good
Witch Hunter Robin (TV) Weak Being a fan of the X-Files and hearing that this series had a similar atmosphere made me want to see it more than anything else, but after finishing it I have to say that this series is nowhere near as good as The X-Files, though it has certain things going for it, such as the atmosphere, the musical score which really helps to set the mood of each scene, and the artwork and animation are really good. Unfortunately, all of the characters are caricatures of some kind or another and none of them are really very interesting and the plot, while it had potential, was poorly executed. The first half of the show does the monster-of-the-week format, introducing the characters and the premise of the series. The villains are interesting and there are some good back-stories behind them, but unfortunately they don't really do anything with them. Witch Hunter Robin and everyone else investigates the witches, they find them, they do battle, they capture the witch, lather, rinse, repeat. Once the main story arc gets started I thought it was going to get good, and for a few episodes it did, only to return to its mediocre state once more where things get dragged out too long and then we return to the monster-of-the-week format for a few episodes as Robin investigates and fights people who are hunting her this time instead of the other way around. And then there are a few plot holes throughout that would be spoilers if I mention them, but they seriously just don't make any sense. I guess it might have made a better 13-episode series, but as it is now, Witch Hunter Robin just doesn't do it for me.
Wolf's Rain (TV) Very good
Wolf's Rain (OAV) Very good
Words Worth (OAV) Not really good
