I also don't care much for the voice acting, and the battles were a bit crude for my taste. Basically, Accel World focuses more on strategy than e.g. "Sword Art Online", but it feels as if it also lost the love for the artificial world in the process.

Type(ACTION) Mood(THRILLER) Stage(SCIENCE FICTION) I'm not a fan of outdated CG animation so it took a while before I got used to it and was able to enjoy the movie. Appleseed is kind of similar to the G.i.t.S. franchise as it deals with the philosophical and ideological dilemmas that cloning and A.I. technology give birth to. All in all it's a good story, but the script is a bit stiff, causing the dialogue to be less than dynamic. It suffers from a lack of flow and emotional commitment from the VAs. The good thing is that this movie has a lot of rewatch value and when you have the whole picture, you start reading more into what is said and recognize important hints and details in the dialogue. ~~First viewed: 2015-09-22~~ |

The story develops at a quick pace, and Lelouch is forced to use his "gift" in very creative ways to outsmart his enemies, and with mixed results. The story moves between suspense, tragedy, and comic relief, and between strategic thinking and intense action sequences.

Type(ACTION) Mood(THRILLER) Stage(SCIENCE FICTION) The pace of the plot is sometimes insane, and one episode can feel like a 20min summary of 5 episodes, but played in a non sequencial order; making it very confusing to follow. The tone is darker than in season one, with little room for hope, and the comic relief is brought down to a minimum. The rushed plot feels haphazard and unnatural, and some of the most interresting characters from season one are missing. The focus has moved from a psychological viewpoint, toward blunt technological warfare, with advanced mecha in focus. This all makes the second season a disappointment, compared to the first, but it's still worth seeing.

Type(ACTION) Mood(TRAGEDY) Stage(SCIENCE FICTION) After having seen Cowboy Bebop I have to say that I'm slightly disappointed. I realize that people have different tastes, but this series is so hyped that I thought it surely had to be something special. Many episodes aren't that interesting, silly even, and the quality varies a lot between episodes throughout the series. The characters are the show's greatest weakness and the only one I actually like somewhat is Faye, the others just don't cut it.
The soundtrack is very good, though, and the characters usually drop at least a few clever lines in each episode. The problem is that Cowboy Bebop tries to be a little of everything, but as a result ends up not having any real strenghts. I tries to be both silly and witty, philosophical and thoughtful, as well as cool and badass. Imo it tries to incorporate, and uses clichés from, too many genres (action, adventure, comedy, drama, mystery, romance, and sci-fi), but doesn't shine in any one of them.
I'm not saying that Cowboy Bebop is a bad show, I still rate it as very good (if barely), but it certainly isn't as good as I expected it to be. ~~Started watching: 2015-07-01, Finished: 2015-07-04, Span: 4 days~~ |

Why can only a select few teens pilot those gundams? What's the story behind the angels?What's up with Shinji's psycho-dad? The zombie-like Rey (why is that trope so popular btw?) is only good for fan-service, and the rambling of nonsensical (to me at least) technical terms must be near record-breaking. Misato was the one character who actually provided some humor, insight, and depth to the story, and she's the only reason why I think this movie is even worth a watch. * * * Summary: Depressed, spineless, boy is put through hell by evil and manipulative father, but still wants his approval. Emotionless, brainwashed, girl is put through hell by evil and manipulative "father", but still loves him. Overly dramatical panicking and massive use of effectiveless weapons, is followed by your standard mecha vs monster battles, with boy constantly complaining about his fate throughout the movie. Closeups of manipulative father, with more evil scheming. I realized that the writers/directors behind this show had some serious psychological issues they might want to deal with, but I was also amused at some of the absurdities of the show and sat there chuckling to myself and shaking my head in disbelief. Anyway, I was still enjoying the series up to the fourth episode, but from episodes 5 and 6 it turns into little but an orgy of trash talk, ultra violence and gore, which is refreshing up to a point, but soon becomes predictable and a poor substitute for what could've been an interesting story. Since I'm not fifteen anymore, I wasn't very impressed with all the symbolism and glorified war that were constantly shoved down my throat. On the plus side, the soundtrack is good and Jouji Nakata is excellent as Alucard. If you do like it, though, I can recommend that you also watch Kurozuka, which is a series with many similarities to the Highlander movie. The young traveler Kino, along with the talking motorcycle Hermes, journey to different lands, and never stay more than three days in each land. The story revolves around examining the many cruel acts which people are capable of committing, under the right cicumstances, in order to protect themselves, their way of living, and their status. We also get to see the fear, grief, and despair of the victims to these crimes. It becomes quite depressing to watch, after a while, and I wished the story could've covered a wider range of positive emotions, such as hope, love, and feeling of accomplishment, to compensate for the overwhelming darkness. There's seldom any follow-up on the various plot twists that are introduced and whatever happens seems of little consequence to the main storyline and ends up in limbo. The art is amazing, the classical scores really set the mood, and even the sound effects are spot on. Nausicaä is the cherry on the cake, as she's arguably one of the most well made heroines in anime history.

The movie does have its moments, and is surprisingly good for a movie sequel. The japanese voice actors manage to portray the characters in a realistic way, and it's fascinating to follow the first Slice of Life-half of the movie. I wanted to learn more about this japanese family (or rather clan of families), and about the various social codes between main- and branch families. What upsets me is that the story then changes direction, and becomes something of a Sci-fi Thriller instead, which I feel is an attempt to make the title more mainstream. The producers should've stuck with what they do best, though, which in this case is the Slice of Life part of the movie. The Sci-fi part seems like a drunk guest, who's crashing a otherwise great party, and I feel that the movie lost its direction only to get lost midway through. Since the first half is excellent, and the second half merely good, I suppose the overall rating falls under the very good category. It's refreshing to see a romantic comedy that doesn't stick to clichés, and stereotypes. Though the main protagonist has several potential love interests, this isn't a typical harem plot, and the characters are comparatively more complex. Toradora has good character development, which means that the story gets better with each episode, so whatever you do, make sure you finish the entire series. Stopping midway would be like watching the first season of Clannad, but not watch the After Story.
