Shinigami-sama's Anime

take a look at Shinigami-sama's Manga
Seen allRatingComment
Akira (movie)ExcellentNot even close to being in the same league as the manga, but good nonetheless.
Android Kikaider - The Animation (TV)So-soThe series had a decent plot, but I feel like I'm going to puke every time I see Ishinomori's artwork.
(The) Animatrix (OAV)ExcellentA great complement to the Matrix trilogy, this is everything that an OVA should be.
Armitage III (OAV)ExcellentGreat plot and action with premises and concepts that were fairly innovative for its time.
Armitage: Dual-Matrix (movie)Very goodNot nearly as complex or entertaining as the original, but the action is better and the plot is far from bad.
Battle Royale (live-action movie)GoodEntertaining for one viewing, but drastically disappointing after reading the novel and the manga.
Battle Royale II: Requiem (live-action movie)GoodWith drastic overacting, a seemingly rushed plot and script, and weak if not ridiculous excuses for plot advancement, this does little more than taint the image of the source material.
Berserk (TV 1997)MasterpieceBerserk is like a fine gumbo. There is no better way to put it. Interpret this as you will.
Beyond (OAV)MasterpieceOn first glance it appears to be rather boring, but upon repeat viewings I've grown to love the hidden depths of this anime.
(The) Big O (TV)MasterpieceOne of the best giant robot shows ever, this is also one of the best psychological shows ever. Two for one!
Blame! (ONA)DecentExceptional visual feats, but there is almost no story whatsoever.
Blood: The Last Vampire (movie)GoodInexplicably wondrous animation quality and direction; but the story, running time, and character designs leave much to be desired.
Blue Submarine No.6 (OAV)MasterpieceA true masterpiece that deserved better treatment on television. This is where I first fell in love with Gonzo.
Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040 (TV)Very goodA fabulous adaptation of the original cyberpunk epic. Enthralling from the get-go.
Cannon Fodder (movie)MasterpieceAnimation that is truly innovative and amazing, with direction to match. It also contains some subtle but thought-provoking societal and political commentaries.
Castle in the Sky (movie)Very goodMiyazaki at his best. But why did they have to remove the titular "Laputa" from the English release, that allegory was one of the best parts of the film for literature buffs.
Comedy (OAV)MasterpieceThe second greatest anime of all time, yielding only to Evangelion. Every aspect of this piece exemplifies the definition of perfection. The only reason it is second is because of its short running time.
Construction Cancellation Order (movie)ExcellentA breath of fresh air for an exhausted theme, that of robots taking over humanity. I especially appreciated the ending, though I won't give anything away.
Cookie-san no Newsroom (April fool's JOKE)MasterpieceYes, this is a joke. But the show was great.
Cowboy Bebop (TV)ExcellentI don't think there's a living anime fan who hasn't seen this show. Personally, I enjoyed it greatly but think that its overrated.
Cowboy Bebop: The MovieVery goodA great addition to the franchise, but it would have done just as well as a two-part episodic chapter.
Crest of the Stars (TV)Very goodParagonal example of what made sci fi so popular in the first place. Very good in every aspect but excellent in none.
Dead Leaves (OAV)ExcellentExemplary exercise in oddity that proves to both out-perverse Kentucky Fried Movie and out-gore Kill Bill.
A Detective Story (OAV)ExcellentOutstanding film noir style by modern legend Watanabe Shinichiro.
Digital Juice (OAV)ExcellentThis is an extremely progressive anime which contains some of the most spectacular animation and directing I've ever seen, however only three of the six shorts have any plot.
Dragon Ball (TV)Very goodA great show and my personal favorite of the three television series'.
Dragon Ball GT (TV)DecentA major let down for fans, but at least it was relatively short.
Dragon Ball Movie 1: Curse of the Blood RubiesDecentEntertaining for fans, but not much else.
Dragon Ball Movie 2: Sleeping Princess in Devil's CastleDecentSee movie one.
Dragon Ball Movie 3: Mystical AdventureGoodSee movies one and two.
Dragon Ball Movie 4: The Path to PowerGoodA nice tenth anniversary project, but the execution was disappointing.
Dragon Ball Z (TV)ExcellentThis was a good show before it was butchered, aired, and blown way out of proportion. Not to mention the fact that it could have ended after the Cell saga.
Dragon Ball Z: Bardock - The Father of Goku (special)GoodA very good addition with more plot than your usual DBZ venture.
Dragon Ball Z: Bio-Broly (movie 11)DecentWorst DBZ movie. He was killed by @^$!ing rain! It doesn't get lamer than that.
Dragon Ball Z: Bojack Unbound (movie 9)GoodThis movie was good enough, but I saw it before I saw the part of the show where they introduce Mr. Satan, so that was kind of lost on me initially.
Dragon Ball Z: Broly - Second Coming (movie 10)GoodDecent but not great as far as the DBZ movies go.
Dragon Ball Z: Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan (movie 8)Very goodNot great but who can pass up on Kuririn doing karaoke, it was ingenious.
Dragon Ball Z: Cooler's Revenge (movie 5)GoodI have fond memories because this was the first DBZ movie I saw, it's still a good movie in my opinion.
Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone (movie 1)DecentNot a very good movie, but entertaining enough.
Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn (movie 12)ExcellentBest anime in the Dragon Ball franchise. I love this film. And I've literally seen it more than sixty times. I have wasted my youth.
Dragon Ball Z: Lord Slug (movie 4)So-soAlmost as bad as movie eleven, but not quite.
Dragon Ball Z: Plan to Destroy the Saiyajin (OAV)So-soNot an actual anime per se, but still entertaining for fans.
Dragon Ball Z: Super Android 13! (movie 7)GoodOne of the better DBZ movies. Pure action. I think there were about twenty sentences in the whole movie.
Dragon Ball Z: The History of Trunks (special)GoodAnother plot-driven story in the vein of the Bardock special.
Dragon Ball Z: The Return of Cooler (movie 6)GoodA nice follow-up to movie 5, but not as good as the aforementioned.
Dragon Ball Z: The Tree of Might (movie 3)DecentBetter than #2, but not by much.
Dragon Ball Z: The World's Strongest (movie 2)DecentNot great, on the low side of DBZ movies.
Dragon Ball Z: Wrath of the Dragon (movie 13)Very goodA good movie, but I kind of stopped caring at this point.
Escaflowne: The MovieGoodA good movie in and of itself, but it doesn't live up to the series.
Eternal Family (TV)ExcellentThe Truman Show on a heavy dose of undilluted PCP.
Excel Saga (TV)ExcellentA magnificently funny series that will make you go into a coma if you watch it all at once
(The) Final Flight of the Osiris (OAV)Very goodAmazing CGI and decent in the ways of overall plot development, but little else to speak of.
FLCL (OAV)MasterpieceI can't help it if I have an unnatural obsession with Gainax. But I freakin' love this series. I 've watched it about fifteen times.
G-Saviour (live-action TV movie)WeakA total waste of everyone's time, especially the people who made it. But necessary if you want to see every Gundam title.
Gantz (TV)Very goodI thought this show was awesome until I read the manga. It is still worth watching for the great visuals and interesting conclusion, but I cannot help but feel disappointed with the anime.
Gasaraki (TV)ExcellentVery innovative for its time and with astounding attention to realistic detail. Even several years after its creation it is a breath of fresh air in giant robot anime.
Ghost in the Shell (movie)Very goodAnother classic anime that I thought didn't live up to the manga. Still good though.
Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (movie)MasterpieceA lusciously presented amalgam of everything that has made Oshii loved over the years. Any director would be ecstatic to call this their magnum opus.
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (TV)MasterpieceCloser to both the plot and the spirit of the manga, it is drastically superior to the movie and is one of the best anime in recent memory.
Golden Boy (OAV)ExcellentThe biggest mistake I made was avoiding this for a long time because I thought it looked bad. This is actually one of the funniest anime I've ever seen.
Grave of the Fireflies (movie)MasterpieceOne of the best war films ever made. This is why Ghibli is so acclaimed.
Gunbuster (OAV)ExcellentOh Gainax, how I love thee. Oh Anno, come back to anime. But seriously, it's great.
(The) Guyver: Bio-Booster Armor (OAV)DecentClassic sci fi with an interesting plot, but it is bogged down with redundant action sequences and poor dialogue.
.hack//SIGN (TV)Very goodA well-done series with a concept that reeks of originality, however the story started to drag near the end.
Hellsing (TV)GoodFantastic visuals and characters, but the second half of the series seemed contrived.
His and Her Circumstances (TV)ExcellentAlright, I love Gainax too much. That is now old news. This is no exception. Especially because of Anno.
Howl's Moving Castle (movie)ExcellentDespite some minor shortcomings with regards to dialogue and plot holes, the endearing characters and inexplicably exquisite artwork make this more manditory for everybody whose open to experiencing it, not just anime fans.
Jikū Bōken Nūmamonjaa (OAV)BadI never played the game, but the OVA was ridiculous.
Kakurenbo - Hide & Seek (OAV)Very goodVery interesting animation and great action find an excuse to run rampant in this trite story.
Kid's Story (OAV)ExcellentOutstanding animation and fluid action with a story that actually adds to the overall plot of The Matrix.
Kikaider-01: The Animation (OAV)So-soThe OVA doesn't differ much from the series, just look below.
Kiki's Delivery Service (movie)Very goodSweet, innocent, and gritty; Miyazaki created the perfect picture of adolescence.
Kimagure Robot (TV)GoodProbably the best animation possible on so low a budget accompanies entertaining but frivolous short stories.
Kino's Journey (TV)MasterpieceExquisite writing of a caliber unrivaled by nearly anything is accompanied by beautifully understated art to make the perfect parables for us complex creatures.
Kite (OAV)DecentThe most drastic waste of potential I've ever seen.
Labyrinth Story (movie)GoodAmazing and unique animation and direction, but little in the way of plot.
Last Exile (TV)MasterpieceA truly original work of art that utilizes everything Gonzo has done right thus far, and that's a lot.
Lupin III: Dead or Alive (movie)ExcellentWithout a doubt the best incarnation of Lupin I've gotten to see; a must watch for anyone, even those who aren't Lupin fans.
Lupin III: Return of Pycal (OAV)Very goodThe welcomed return of a memorable character is accompanies by some of the most outstanding visuals in the Lupin franchise.
Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro (movie)ExcellentFantastic as a Miyazaki piece, but not what you might expect out of Lupin.
Lupin III: Voyage to Danger (special)Very goodNot as good as other incarnations I've seen, but very good for Lupin fans nonetheless.
Lupin the 3rd (TV)ExcellentThe original is still my favorite and it would be a crime if this never got licensed.
Lupin the 3rd: The Hemingway Papers (special)Very goodGeneral Lupin fare. Not his best, but far from his worst.
Lupin the 3rd: The Mystery of Mamo (movie)ExcellentOne of the greatest Lupin titles ever, it remains outstanding alongside any modern classic.
Macross Plus (OAV)MasterpieceWhile the writing is certainly intriguing and wonderful, it is the visual aspect which designates a space for Macross Plus as one of the greatest anime of the 1990s.
Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi (TV)MasterpieceThe best anime spoof ever. And its by the demi-gods at Gainax!
Magnetic Rose (movie)MasterpieceBeautifully executed masterpiece of psychological horror from one of the greatest directors and one of the greatest writers in the history of anime.
Manie Manie: Neo Tokyo (movie)ExcellentAn exemplary exercise in innovation that certainly worked to move the medium forward, even after all this time it does not seem outdated.
Matriculated (OAV)GoodThe most insane short in The Animatrix, it is in a similar style to the other works of Peter Chung.
Memories (movie)MasterpieceThe greatest collection of writers and directors in one omnibus since Robot Carnival eight years earlier and until The Animatrix eight years later.
Metropolis (movie)Very goodA stupefying combination of beautiful CG backgrounds and dreadful 2-D characters, this is an anime that would have held better had it been produced forty years ago. Because, despite the fact that its manga is technically the origin of such pastiches, it just seems formulaic nowadays.
Mezzo Forte (OAV)Very goodOutstanding animation accompanies an hour of top-notch, yet nonetheless mindless and sometimes infantile, entertainment.
Millennium Actress (movie)MasterpieceExcellent direction and a beautifully crafted story make this a truly satisfying cinematic experience.
Mind Game (movie)MasterpiecePerhaps the most aptly named anime of all time.
Mix Juice "Jigen Loop - SOS Rescue Version" (OAV)Very goodEither dull or ingenious depending on the viewer. But either way, the animation is stunning.
Mobile Fighter G Gundam (TV)BadThe biggest mistake in the Gundam franchise save SD Gundam Force. This was a severe disappointment.
Mobile Suit Gundam (TV)ExcellentClassic for a reason, this is one of the best anime out there.
Mobile Suit Gundam - The Movie TrilogyVery goodA recap of the Gundam series, but still great.
Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket (OAV)ExcellentAn outstanding change of direction for Gundam, this focuses more on people that mobile suits.
Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory (OAV)GoodNot a great series, but still very good. It was too heavy on the fighting and not enough on the people.
Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: The Afterglow of Zeon (movie)So-soA recap of the series.
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing (TV)GoodI'm probably the only Gundam fan who didn't really like wing. It was good once, but it didn't live up to UC.
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz (OAV)GoodThis is basically the same as the movie.
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz Special Edition (movie)DecentA fitting end to the series. Better than the previous Gundam films.
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Operation Meteor (OAV)DecentNothing special, just a summary of the show.
Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack (movie)Very goodA very well-done ending to the feud between Amuro and Char. One of my favorite Gundams.
Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team (OAV)ExcellentMy favorite Gundam by a different director, this was almost as good as the Tomino originals.
My Neighbor Totoro (movie)MasterpieceOne of Miyazaki's greatest masterpieces, not to mention that Totoro is the coolest character ever.
My Neighbors the Yamadas (movie)GoodAn interesting and comedic look at the everyday Japanese lifestyle. Complemented by beautiful animation.
Nadia - The Secret of Blue Water (TV)ExcellentDesert island episodes aside, this is likely the best children's anime out there. Besides the great characters, fantastic adventures and allegorical splendors, it also has one of the most engrossing romances in anime.
Nadia - The Secret of Blue Water: The Motion PictureBadThis is like the special olympics of anime creation. But honestly, it should be avoided like the clap, especially if you liked the original series.
Nandarou (special)WeakI suppose this was intended to be cute, but it was just a boring commercial with shoddy animation as one would not expect from Ghibli.
Naruto: Akaki Yotsuba no Clover o Sagase (OAV)GoodNot as good as the series itself, but still entertaining.
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (movie)MasterpieceThe best Miyazaki anime ever; this is one masterpiece that should be in everybody's collection, regardless.
Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV)MasterpieceBest anime ever. Any show that I would watch six times in the first month and not get tired of deserves that title. Gainax at their best. Buy it now or I'll kill you. No questions asked.
Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth (movie)ExcellentA recap of the greatest artistic achievement of mankind and the first half of End of Evangelion.
Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion (movie)ExcellentThough the movie is enjoyable, I hate it because of its nature. The original Eva ending was the greatest experience I ever had in front of a television and they had to ruin it with this blatant bullhocky.
Ninja Scroll (movie)Very goodA wonderfully choreographed action anime, this movie has more blood than it does plot.
Noiseman Sound Insect (movie)ExcellentI saw it without subtitles and, thus, couldn't understand the dialogue. But it presented some of the most splendiferous animation, direction, and originality I've ever witnessed.
On Your Mark (movie)GoodThe animation is wonderful but, being a music video, it is devoid of depth.
Only Yesterday (movie)Very goodA charming romance with flashbacks to a realistic childhood and adolescence. Ghibli proves themselves once again.
Otaku no Video (OAV)MasterpieceEssential Gainax. A perfect spoof of both the fans and themselves, this anime is a funny as it gets.
Outlaw Star (TV)Very goodA fun sci fi series that always seems to be compared to and, thus, outclassed by Cowboy Bebop and Trigun.
Paranoia Agent (TV)MasterpieceMasterful societal commentary and character study as well as Kon's signature suspense and constant innovation in animation techniques throughout the show.
Perfect Blue (movie)ExcellentOne of the greatest psychological thrillers ever made, the film is all-around fantastic.
(The) Place Promised in Our Early Days (movie)ExcellentEpitomizes the Eastern storytelling technique of slow yet beautiful development. Great direction and concepts that are regrettably lost at times due to a sluggish script.
Pokémon (TV)BadWhy did I waste my time on this dredge of crap? I was young and naive. I swear.
Pokémon: The First Movie (movie 1)AwfulWorse than the show. That's pretty bad.
Pom Poko (movie)Very goodAwesome anime with great story and accidental comedic elements.
Porco Rosso (movie)ExcellentDo I really need to kiss more Miyazaki butt? Just see it.
(Le) Portrait de Petite Cossette (OAV)MasterpieceTrue art. A story of literary quality is complimented by visuals that play like Eva-esque symbolism high on Faulknerian stream-of-consciousness.
Princess Arete (movie)ExcellentA very slow story with artistic ingenuity and an undercoat of sophistication.
Princess Mononoke (movie)ExcellentMore great Miyazaki. If you haven't seen it, do.
Program (OAV)Very goodGreat action but little else, very reminiscent of Kawajiri Yoshiaki's earlier Ninja Scroll.
Puni Puni Poemy (OAV)ExcellentIts a spinoff of Excel Saga. How else can you describe it?
Read or Die (OAV)MasterpieceA wonderfully intelligent series with allegory up the wazoo.
Record of Lodoss War (OAV)GoodVery good if you like fantasy, but you might as well just read Lord of the Rings instead.
Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight (TV)GoodBetter than the OVA, but still a LOTR ripoff without all of the greatness of the ripoffee.
Reign: The Conqueror (TV)Very goodI think I'm the only person who liked this series. Yes their wearing codpieces. No I don't care. The historical significance is much more interesting and the writing outweighs the groins.
Robot Carnival (OAV)MasterpieceUnrivaled visuals are paired with primarily humdrum stories.
Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise (movie)MasterpieceThe masterpiece that made me first fall in love with Gainax, this is still one of the best films ever created.
Running Man (movie)MasterpieceThe most realistic animation I've ever seen in an anime and that matched with a majestic metaphor for life.
Rurouni Kenshin (TV 1996)ExcellentOne of the greatest anime ever made by someone other than Gainax. This is my favorite shonen anime.
Rurouni Kenshin: Reflection (OAV)DecentA travesty. I'm sorry but you can't fit thirteen volumes of manga into two half hour episodes. Read the manga.
Rurouni Kenshin: The Motion PictureGoodAn interesting additional to the Kenshin storyline, it doesn't quite live up to the show and the manga.
Rurouni Kenshin: Trust & Betrayal (OAV)Very goodThe OVA is even better and the lush animation is reason enough to watch this.
Samurai Deeper Kyo (TV)GoodA fun story with great action, the anime seemed rushed and, therefore, confusing at times. Read the manga.
Second Renaissance (OAV)MasterpieceAn outstanding achievement by Gonzo regular Maeda Mahiro. Probably the best of the Animatrix shorts.
Serial Experiments Lain (TV)MasterpieceA perfectly executed psychological sci fi series, this is very morbid and enjoyable.
Shadowskin (US-Independent OAV)GoodNot a great title, but amazing that it was done by one man.
Shaman King (TV 2001)Very goodA great shonen series with original ideas and style. It's a shame it was put on Foxbox.
She, The Ultimate Weapon (TV)ExcellentThe designs take some getting used to, but once you get past them you will discover a true gem of political commentary and realistic representation of emotional complexities.
Sora Iro no Tane (special)WeakBad animation accompanies a horribly executed axercise in stream-of-consciousness. Whatin the hell were they advertising?
Spirited Away (movie)Very goodVery good in movie terms, however it is probably one of my least favorite Miyazakis.
Spriggan (movie)ExcellentThe only possible complaint would be that there isn't a sequel. Fantastic in every other aspect.
Steamboy (movie)ExcellentI do not exaggerate when I say that it is truly perfect in every possible aspect with the exception of some ridiculous but minor plot devices.
Step Up Love Story (OAV)WeakUnder no circumstances should this be watched. If you even have a passing interest in this series then do yourself a favor by reading the manga and forgetting they ever tried to adapt it into an anime.
Stink Bomb (movie)ExcellentA rarity of a comedy by Otomo Katsuhiro, but he squeezes in a fair amount of satire to keep it balanced. Probably the most simplistic of the Memories shorts.
(The) Super Dimension Fortress Macross (TV)ExcellentDespite the laughably outdated animation and a few silly plot devices, this is undoubtedly one of the most realistic, emotionally gripping and profound achievemnets in sci fi anime.
Tenchi in Tokyo (TV)GoodLet the franchise die in peace!
Tenchi Muyo! (OAV 1/1992)Very goodA very fun series, but I will never forgive it for starting the harem craze.
Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki (OAV 2/1994)Very goodA fitting sequel to the original.
Tenchi Muyo! The Night Before The Carnival (OAV)Very goodA nice, calm break between the first two OVAs.
Tenchi The Movie 2 - The Daughter of DarknessGoodA decent sequel to the original OVAs.
Tenchi Universe (TV)Very goodI didn't really need to see everything happen again but slightly different.
Texhnolyze (TV)MasterpieceImagine a wonderfully artistic amalgum of Gungrave, Serial Experiments Lain, and Wolf's Rain.
Tokyo Babylon (OAV)GoodOutstanding as a standalone title, but it doesn't do justice to the manga.
Tokyo Babylon 2 (OAV)Very goodAgain, very well-done, but they should have made a full-length series out of it.
Tokyo Godfathers (movie)ExcellentNot as good as Kon's first two movies, but still an outstanding work.
Trigun (TV)ExcellentA great sci fi series with a cool spaghetti western twist. But you already knew that because everybody's seen it.
Turn A Gundam (TV)Very goodThe most underrated Gundam series, this was one of the best since the 1979 original.
Turn A Gundam: Earth Light (movie 1)GoodA recap of the first half of the series.
Turn A Gundam: Moon Butterfly (movie 2)GoodA recap of the second half of the series.
Twilight Q (OAV)Very goodThink of the Twilight Zone by Tomomi Mochizuki and Mamoru Oshii plus an extra level of intellectuality a la Kazunori Ito.
Understanding Chaos (US-Independent OAV)GoodMildly entertaing, but a true innovation for the medium due to the consequences of its creation.
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (movie)Very goodA fun horror adventure, it is not much more that a well-written gorefest.
Wolf's Rain (TV)MasterpieceBeautifully executed anime that appeals to fans of complex series and straight up action.
Wolf's Rain (OAV)MasterpieceSeamless transition of quality from the television series.
World Record (OAV)Very goodThe most original take on The Matrix universe with beautifully dark animation to boot.
X (movie)GoodThe animation and direction are outstanding, but it is too hard to fit eighteen volumes of manga into a two hour movie. Just watch the TV series.
X (TV)Very goodThe penultimate CLAMP series, it manages to attract to boys and girls equally while maintaining an outstanding plot.
X OAVGoodArtistic and intriguing introduction to the X series that manages to both pull the uninitiated directly into the story while enriching the plot and characters for long-time fans.
Yu Yu Hakusho The Movie: Poltergeist Report (movie 2/1994)GoodA very good movie that surpasses much of the series in quality.
Yu Yu Hakusho: Eizou Hakusho (OAV)So-soA recap of the first half of the dark tournament.
Yu Yu Hakusho: Eizou Hakusho II (OAV)So-soA recap of the second half of the dark tournament.
Yu Yu Hakusho: Ghost Files (TV)Very goodOne of the best shonen series out there, it manages to stay fresh and interesting to the last episode.
Yu Yu Hakusho: The Movie (movie 1/1993)DecentA silly half hour movie that serves as a nice break from the dark themes of the show.
