A school romance drama centering a girl's point of view but with a lot of focus on the guy she is in love with. As such it appears to be intended for both the shoujo and shounen audiences.
The series is well directed, the characters are initially well designed and unfold themselves during the season in a predictable but likable way. The dialogs and monologues are realistic and, considering the age, intelligent, though, hey do follow a the usual path of feel-good story-line. So even if you start to like the characters and involve yourself with their issues the plot generally doesn't require a deeper analysis, you simply feel satisfied having watched it.

Although I read the manga and prefer the original story I won't degrade this first series. There are not many manga adaptions with an alternate retelling which can even compete with the original. I recommend to watch the anime before reading the manga |

Even if mecha seems to be a genre for kids the Japanese author, I think, use them to process several difficult questions of war and life. So does this series as well and it accomplihes its task pretty well. However, even if the character development, the music and the story are very well crafted it has problems with its repeating scenes and often unsatisfying dialogue. To create an emotional atmosphere important scenes are repeated very often in order to explain the feelings or thoughts of the character but it becomes very annoying in the end.

If you discovered Log Horizon first, I recommend to finish it and take a break for a few days to let it sink in before beginning with Sword Art Online(SAO). Further, I suggest to watch this season in one go to preserve the intended emotional states that especially the latter episodes try to trigger.
Both Log Horizon and SAO brought back the discussion about virtual realities to the mainstream anime. However, you must not carelessly compare them as they touch very different - even opposing - themes which, on the other hand, makes both of them so worthwhile to watch.

Like in some Western series the story involves a desert living place and mainly gun fights with a lecture of how to survive. With it episodic "save a town" adventures and the mysterious past of the protagonist the show reminds you a little of Rouroni Kenshin. |
