11eyes (TV) Not really good Pretty generic and not very interesting.
11eyes (OAV) Not really good Way too sexual.
Air (TV) Good Not what I was expecting. After having watched the whole thing I'm kind of angry...They built up a very interesting story but I feel like they didn't finish it or at least end it concretely. Here are some questions that I wish the story answered: What are the white feathers, where did they come from and why? Possibly they came from the girl in the sky but for what purpose? The feather was a curse to Kano but a blessing for Minagi... Next, why was Yukito transformed (reincarnated?) into a bird...while his original self was still present? I'd understand if the crow form was to show him what he was doing wrong but he doesn't change back so whats the point, or if he died because of the curse and was then reincarnated it would make sense but if so why was he reincarnated in the past? Lastly, I feel a story about breaking a curse should end with the curse being broken and it should be happy if even bitter-sweet but this anime doesn't give you that pleasure instead you don't know if the curse was lifted and it's just confusing and sad.
Air In Summer (special) Good I liked this arch in the main series a lot so it was interesting to see some more of it.
Ajin (TV) Good Pretty decent but needs the second season to make it complete.
Akame ga KILL! (TV) Good Over the top anime like this is refreshing to watch once in a while.
Akira (movie) So-so I wanted to watch this since it is supposedly an anime classic but to be honest I wasn't too impressed.
Aldnoah.Zero (TV) Good See season two for comment.
Aldnoah.Zero (TV 2) Good Pretty much like every other space mecha series. For good or for worse.
Amagami SS (TV) Excellent First of all, I applaud this series for solving the dating-sim to anime dilemma of players choice. The whole point of a dating-sim is to pick the girl you like and date [read: bed] her (at least I assume so... I've never actually played one). So how do you translate that to a non-interactive media such as anime? Pretty much the writers just pick the most stable easy-out girl and follow her story while they give a little taste of the others. In my experience that has always lead me to wish another character was picked because they either match my preference in fake animated women or posses more interesting characteristics/personality or background. In Amagami this is solved because you get to see all the girls, how they are won, and the result. It's simply genius. For me Haruka"s story was my favorite because she is my ideal woman. The way she is always joking and being playful and sometimes caring but also can be serious when she needs to be. Her episodes kind of made me depressed after watching them because I'll probably never get a girl like her and I've long since missed my chance to have that kind of relationship in high school. Oh well... I also liked Kaoru, she is a really fun and attractive girl but she kind of got screwed over since her four episodes where kind of a let down since they were pretty realistic haha. On the other hand, Sae is one of those extremely shy types that only exist in anime, well at least not in America. Again, I didn't enjoy her episodes as much as Haruka's maybe its love? hah The introduction of a narrator for these episodes definitely didn't help since it was extremely annoying and changed the feel from kind of role-playing yourself as Jun'ichi to just being an outside observer. Ai was probably my second favorite because she was a very light tsundere at first and there was actually a good ending with her at the hot spring. If Kaoru's episodes were realistic Rihoko's were too realistic, on the verge of boring. Sadly, she didn't even get a happy ending because she never told Junichi how she felt and even then it seemed like he would have turned her down. Again these episodes switched perspective to Rihoko instead of the main male lead which I didn't like. Tsukasa's episodes were interesting because I liked her secret bitchy side but I would have liked to understand her character better like what was in her notebook and why she hates her sister. In the end her story was sort of shallow. Risa was just plane scary since she was a stalker and a liar and since it was only one episode it didn't have a enough time to be genuine so it was just stupid and made no sense...You stalked me for 2+ years and lied to countless girls cause you love me...yeah right... Recap: Haruka > Ai > Kaoru > Tsukasa > Sae > Rihoko >> Risa.
Angel Beats! (TV) Excellent Great anime that has given me a little hope that anime isn't dead yet. It has action, romance, comedy, and even parts that make you tear up. I thought the story was very unique and generally good its a shame it was only 13 episodes because around the end it got pretty rushed and a lot of the secondary characters didn't get their goodbye. That's kinda lame since why build up a character and then forget about them?
Angel's Egg (movie) So-so Pretty strange movie with a lot of symbolism to try and wrap your head around. Whether the guy with the cross/sword was helping her or not by breaking the egg I don't know but either way I hate him for breaking the only thing that little girl had left in that dead world.
anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day (TV) Masterpiece I put watching this one off since I knew it would make me cry manly tears... I was right by the end I was balling... The story is great, characters are complex and entertaining. One of the best anime to come around in a long time.
Another (TV) Very good At first I thought it was amazing like another "Higuarshi" (admittedly, one of my favorites)... but it turned out pretty mediocre and it didn't really turn out as good as I think it could have. For example, I wish they stopped the curse for everyone and not just themselves.
Aoi Bungaku Series (TV) So-so I haven't read any of the books featured in this series but I felt like they didn't represent them very well.
Appleseed (movie) Decent Probably a good manga but this movie blows through the story so fast that the story's twists are irrelevant. Also the CGI animation was terrible.
Arakawa Under the Bridge (TV) Decent Weird but it made me laugh.
Attack on Titan (TV) Excellent Great series. I imagine the source material must be just as good or better for them to make something like this. I feel that most anime studios would have have concentrated on the fights and especially the titan vs hybrid fights like a mecha anime with a sort of biological mecha. But this series is all about human nature and human interaction shown through the conversations and struggles of all the characters. After watching many anime that are like what I first described this anime is a breath of fresh air and really filled the desire I had for anime with more adult storytelling. My only criticism is that the story didn't really get anywhere and left a lot of plot hanging. This is alright though if more anime is on the way, I hope so anyways.
Ayakashi (TV) Weak I wish I'd done something better with my time. This show was awful. The characters and the story were terrible.
B Gata H Kei - Yamada’s First Time (TV) Decent Not bad but I was not a fan of Yamada. I kind of wish she never bothered Kosuda since their relationship was founded on a whim while Miyano would have eventually confessed and they probably would have been a good normal couple. But no a selfish, unrealistically sex crazed b*tch decided to go after him for no reason, hes not even her type and they share nothing in common except for sexual attraction. but that's the premise of the story. It just doesn't make sense but most anime don't.
Baccano! (TV) Excellent At first I didn't like it that much but the more I watched it the more I enjoyed it. I love Isaac and Miria! lol My only problem is that it's such a deep story and its only told in 13 episodes and 3 OVAs when crappier shows get 24 or 26 episodes. I hope they make more!
Bakemonogatari (TV) Good I waited for the last episodes to come out before rating and commenting on this series and then I totally forgot about it so my rating and this comment may not totally represent my initial feelings. I remember that I liked the characters especially Hitagi, I'm weak for tsundere characters. However, I found the spirits like the crab, snail, cat, etc motifs to be interesting but not really well explained and they seemed to be based on Japanese mythos and language that were lost in translation (Craps = weightlessness?). Furthermore, the story seemed very superficial in that it seems to gloss over things like Araragi's half-vampireness, his relationship with Meme and Shinobu, and why spirits are now dominating his life. It sort of only pretentiously answers the questions it felt like and directs your attention to the “right” questions which in the end created this feeling of artificial depth which in reality was actually very flimsy. Continuing on that note, I found the interjected poems and picture scenes distracting and I feel they were only there to try to make the series appear artistic and deep. I feel that fans of this series will say I, “Just didn’t get it” and they may be right but once you cut through all the bullsh*t it tries to force on you this is essentially just a story about a boy fighting spirits who posses people. So before it can run off and contemplate the deeper meaning of life’s whatevers it at least needs to establish its story foundation. It is undoubtedly an interesting series but I don't know if it’s deserving of the magnanimous praise given to it by its fans.
Baldr Force EXE (OAV) Good It was good but obviously short in OVA form. you can tell where they could definitely add more meat but in all its a pretty interesting story.
Banner of the Stars (TV) Very good
Berserk (TV 1997) Excellent Great series but it definitely was only the beginning which is sad because it's been so long that it will probably never get an anime conclusion. One thing I didn't like though was that the last rescue and demonic transformation seemed way too rushed compared to the many many episodes that repeated the Hawks just winning battles. I watched it alternating between the subbed and dubbed versions, surprisingly I liked the dubbed better because Guts seemed more bad-*ss instead of just brooding all the time.
Beyond the Boundary (TV) Decent Story was pretty meh.
Birdy the Mighty: Decode (TV) Very good Senkawa is an idiot but he's got heart, too bad for him he didn't get the girl in the end. Anyways, this anime is pretty good but its story and animation style remind me of the generic toons we have over here in the states.
Black Lagoon (TV) Excellent The first anime I've seen that was actually obviously made for an adult audience. I really enjoyed it and found its comedy hilarious.
Black Lagoon: Roberta's Blood Trail (OAV) Good To be honest it had been so long since I'd seen Black Lagoon that I kinda lost my connection to the characters so I didn't enjoy this as much as I would have if I had watched it right after the series.
Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage (TV) Excellent Just like the first season never ended. But after watching this I started to see just how over the top it is... the "good" guys have excellent aim, killing guys in single hits while the bad guys who are army trained can't hit a girl wearing a tank-top with a an f'ing chain gun...One growing disappointment I have over this series is I really want rock and two-hands to get together but it's taking forever. Anyways I hope they keep making more.
Black Rock Shooter (OAV) Not really good I've never seen the art or listened to the song that inspired this anime so guess it's my own fault that I was let down. Judging it solely on its merits as anime though I feel the action world was poorly done in that its animation quality, story telling, and intensity were lacking. The real world side was better but the story was tired and depressing. What this anime needed was another hour to better weave the two worlds together, explain how Yomi got to the action world and how Mato is the BRS. Since they didn’t take the time to answer these questions I am privy to think that in reality Yomi isn't coming back and was probably abducted from the hilltop and Mato dreams up this alternate reality to escape the pain of losing her friend. I know I'm supposed to believe the BRS dimension is real and Mato/BRS saved Yomi but due to the fact that the two worlds contrast so differently and have no logical connection it is hard to come to that conclusion besides them telling us that.
Blassreiter (TV) Good Most anime tell their story by giving only tidbits of the main story interjected with filler archs which when done poorly can be boring or try to hide the fact that the story actually goes nowhere and is mostly junk to distract or if done successfully creates a well rounded tale. This series, however, does not follow that tired strategy and instead portrays every arch like its the main one and layers them on top of each other to form one giant main story. This strategy is a double edged sword because ultimately more main story is (usually) better but on the other hand it makes it so that earlier layers become obsolete once a new layer is begun. This layering technique was so successful that after 24 episodes I felt like I had watched 50 and barely even remembered how it all began. But when I thought about it the information, plot turns, general story I received later on could not rationally be reconciled with the way the story was presented in the beginning. That made me feel cheated since whats the point of watching 12 episodes of something that ultimately doesn't affect what happens in the next 12. Each of the layers/archs is good but they don't really work well together and that is what I feel is this series greatest weakness. However, this series was well produced and interesting.
Blast of Tempest (TV) Excellent Very original and well done. However, the whole story is loosely held together by misunderstandings and characters just not being straight with one another even when there is no time dick around. Another thing I didn't like was the transition from island bound to the present-time love-struck Hakaze was done very rushed and felt awkward like they were two different shows. The story suffered from this causing a strange lag that took the rest of the episodes to fix which luckily it did with a pretty stellar resolution. The allusions to Shakespeare's works was an interesting touch even though they were mentioned so much they did sort of get annoying. But it's all forgiven for Aika, got to love Aika.
Blood+ (TV) Good Solid anime. My only problem was that Saya was a little cry baby...so instead of just getting things over with quick she would pretty much let everyone around her die and had to be reminded constantly why exactly she was fighting. Furthermore the series was full of what I can only call "stock 'anime' characters". for example, the faithful brother that keeps fighting even though they pretty much only serve as a reminder of why the main character is fighting which is usually always for the well being of others. For once I would really like to watch a truly unique anime...though I bet I'd say it s*cks...lol.
Blood-C (TV) Decent I haven't read the source material so I don't know how the real "Blood" series is supposed to go but I much preferred the blood+ version. Blood-C was just a terrible story, the build up is slow and the climax is nonexistent. It becomes increasingly obvious that something is amiss right away but besides subtle (and not so subtle to for the people with half a brain) hints they just keep feeding you the same crap till the last episode with the "big" reveal. At that point I was irate, did they actually think viewers would enjoy something like that? I feel they knew what they were doing and wanted to punish us for some reason.
Blue Exorcist (TV) Good Generic but not terrible.
Blue Gender (TV) So-so Boring...
Blue Spring Ride (TV) Very good Ultimately, just the story of a girl trying to save a damaged boy, with some lopsided love triangle thrown in. However, it was well done; art, pacing, characters and story all fit pretty good for a quick story. It also got my shojo feels going which is nice every now and again.
Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai (OAV) So-so
(The) Book of Bantorra (TV) Very good Interesting series that really knows how to use story-archs. In other shows a story-arch is like its own miniseries that utilizes the characters and premises and generally stands alone. But in this series all the archs converge and intertwine to form a background that helps to explain and give greater meaning to the story. Sadly, some of the archs were better than others and the last arch that is supposed to wrap everything up was thought up by someone on drugs and makes no sense at all. For example, in the last episode you can't go "ha ha ha this is my true power that you didn't even know i had and its also very convenient and extremely powerful" Like at least hint at this power throughout the series or give some kind of foreshadowing. It's just cheap.
A Bridge to the Starry Skies (TV) So-so so generic and unoriginal I had such bad deja vu during it that i thought I might have already seen it.
Broken Blade (movie series) Excellent Good story and characters but the story was incomplete so they need to make more pronto.
Brynhildr in the Darkness (TV) Weak Watered-down Elfen Lied with more harem and stupid story. Pretty much a waste of time.
Btooom! (TV) Decent It's like if Battle Royal and Gantz had a child and it grew up in the era of online gaming.
Buddy Complex (TV) Good Generic and the story has a lot of loop holes but it does what it's supposed to pretty good.
Bungaku Shōjo (movie) Decent Not what I was expecting. I didn't like it all that much. The pacing was all over the place and characters were not properly introduced. Also, I found the animation style sub-par.
Buso Renkin (TV) Very good Good but pretty generic. It reminds me of Bleach with more romance.
C – Control – The Money and Soul of Possibility (TV) So-so Could have been really good, but it didn't use what it had to the fullest.
CANAAN (TV) Decent Boring, the characters are so shallow that they just repeat the same lines over and over and no real logic is used in any of their actions. Also this anime paints a poor picture of Chinese and Americans while keeping Japan clean and off to the side, you know...like usual.
A Certain Magical Index (TV) Good A good start but the story is really slow progressing such that in this season we didn't even get to see the real bad guys.
A Certain Magical Index II (TV) So-so I don't know if I'm dumb or if stuff is getting lost in translation but I only got the gist of each arch and never really understood what the bad guy or good guys were trying to do. they throw around all this religious lingo nonsense like it obvious stuff and characters come in and out I can't keep track of whose an esper, whose a magician, whose an angel-thing, or whose a deity. Basically, I only watched it to see Touma hit things...
A Certain Scientific Railgun (TV) Excellent Excellent series I like how this started a story, sort of ended it, more stuff happened, and then finally finished it. However, it should have had more Touma + Railgun action.
A Certain Scientific Railgun S (TV) Very good Good addition to the series but it had been so long since I watched the first season and then with the Index stories too I had this feeling like I had already watched it which took away all the novelty. I forget exactly where but Accelerator getting the crap handed to him is definitely in one of the other seasons so I knew that was going to go down so basically I knew how it would end. Or maybe I watched this already and forgot? Perhaps this is supposed to be Misaka's take on the same events Touma experienced. I'm not sure but because of the time lag of me watching them it didn't really add much. Another thing I didn't like was the Level 6 Shift arc took like 20 episodes then just sorta ends...and then the last episodes are this mini arc that is too similar (more synthetic humans...) to the other arc and really rushed. Instead I think they should have used those episodes to either add more filler in the middle or give the main arc a better well rounded ending.
Chaika - The Coffin Princess (TV) So-so Super generic and the story is pretty obvious but at least it's not terrible.
Chaos;HEAd (TV) Weak An otakus dream. Keep dreaming though...
Chibits (special) Good
Chobits (TV) Good Good show but it just seemed to be lacking something. The story was a little watered down and the romance was a little too lovey-dovey.
Chobits (OAV) Good
Chrome Shelled Regios (TV) Good Good anime but this one seemed like one that probably makes more sense in the light novels/manga. A lot of things are never explained or explained poorly so your really only get the jist. Overall, it was good but pretty ordinary in its anime-ness. However, what was with the interjected bad English television scenes? that was painful. Also, Felli totally makes the show.
Clannad (TV) Good Love triangles galore...but its pretty obvious whose going to win..not that the winner even tried all that hard. The other girls don't really put up much of a fight anyways...and whenever they do its quickly forgotten. Take Kotomi for example, in ep. 10-14 it is beautifully demonstrated how Tomoya has had and (supposedly) always will have a very important role in her life...but bam ep. 15 comes and its like all that happened didn't and Kotomi is relegated back to a 3rd string character. This kinda made me mad because she had an interesting back story and I was looking forward to seeing her character develop and become more open. I wish she at least put up a fight to get her man but they didn't even give her the chance.
Clannad After Story (TV) Excellent Better than the first season and a total baww fest. It's so sad...except they totally cop out and give it a happy ending...but I guessed I liked that way a little.
Claymore (TV) Very good Interesting story but drags along at many points, has all the predictable twists and in the end pretty much nothing gets resolved. Also Rocky was kind of a b*tch too though I guess I would be too if I was a weak human surrounded by monsters...
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion (TV) Excellent Great anime, it was like deathnote + robots!
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 (TV) Very good
Code:Breaker (TV) So-so It's been done so many times... Same sh*t different show.
Corpse Princess: Aka (TV) Decent It starts off interesting enough to be watchable but goes no where fast. Then when it finally gets exciting it's over. The ending events shouldn't have been at the conclusion but rather in the second or third episode. Pretty much this series only exists to launch the next one which I don't get because how could this get you pumped for more? I'm going to make a prediction that this series and its sequel should have just been one whole 26 episode series.
Corpse Princess: Kuro (TV) So-so A jumbled mess.
Crest of the Stars (TV) Excellent
C³ (TV) Not really good It was just a crappier "Dragon Crisis."
D.Gray-man (TV) Good Quality anime its a shame it kinda stops right in the middle though... One thing I didn't like about this anime though was that during every tough battle Allen will almost die and then come up with a new power neither he nor I knew about and then uses the new power to win...How many times can you keep doing that really...I know that's a common staple in anime (hidden powers that come out when your in a pinch...) but Allen manages to do it like 7 times lol.
Daily Lives of High School Boys (TV) Very good Hilarious.
Dance in the Vampire Bund (TV) Good A real novel vampire story, especially the idea of the bund itself, but I feel like it crammed to much into 12 episodes. The Princess is good, then shes bad, then shes good, then maybe bad, and then finally who cares. This really hurt Akira's character, I felt, because basically hes being strung along the whole series and the only feature he has is his loyalty and whether or not to question it. Also, I didn't really appreciate the ecchi loli stuff and found a lot of it to be over the top and unnecessarily for even spicing it up. The lotion scene and the "purity exam" are two that come to mind. But I guess, although appearing very young, the Princess in actuality is a lot older being immortal and all so it would make sense for her to be intimate or playful with Akira but that doesn't really require it be thrust on the viewer and I feel it is really only there for "those" types of otaku. If you think about it most of the Princesses character only serves that purpose so it shows how much faith the developers actually have in the story. Sadly, I'd guesstimate most watch it for the "loli vampires drrr". Thus ecchi (and moe (though not shown here)) are killing anime Hah.
A Dark Rabbit Has Seven Lives (TV) Weak A waste of time. The characters were bland and their was no story.
Darker than Black (TV) Very good Very good series but I feel it could have been much better. It starts off really confusing cause they throw around all this vocab and allude to a history that is never really fleshed out. Also at some points it seems to drag a long with not much excitement. However, the story is pretty unique.
Darker than Black: Gemini of the Meteor (TV) Good What....? This isn't the same series lol. They took a pretty good series and totally butchered it. Reminds me of what happened with the Matrix Trilogy. The plot was convoluted and pretty much made no sense and didn't really lead off well from the first series.
Darkside Blues (movie) So-so Interesting setup with no finish.
Deadman Wonderland (TV) Good Pretty good but it should have been 24 episodes so we could get a complete story. It reminded my a lot of "S-CRY-ed."
Death Note (TV) Excellent The second anime I ever watched...which was by mistake because I was bored and it was on Adult Swim on the Cartoon Network and I just happened to stumble onto it. Then I couldn't get enough of it. It was like cartoons for adults...atleast that was my first impression. Lights and L continuously trying to out think each other it was so captivating. I can't wait for the live action American adaptation. I hope they don't butcher it though!
Demon King Daimao (TV) Decent This show is pretty much an "American Saturday morning cartoon" with the addition of lewd jokes and an obscene amount of panty-shots and unintentional nakedness. They call that "fan-service" but what does that say about the "fans?" In my opinion, it means that the fans are going to ride anime into the ground until every show is just boobs, underwear, explosions, and some crap story that only gets in the way of said boobs etc. Definitely not a good thing but hey I didn't hate this series...
Den-noh Coil (TV) Very good Interesting story but its quality was kind of a rollercoster with some really good parts and some not so great parts. Furthermore near the end it starts to get confusing when they throw around all this lingo and add a twist that doesn't make much sense. What I want to know is how the heck is the Megamass company so incompetent that elementary school kids are doing all this crazy stuff in their systems? Not to mention the fact that they are a pretty evil company by trying to hide some pretty scary things from consumers.
Denpa teki na Kanojo (OAV) Excellent Interesting story could have made a whole series I would have liked to see the characters and relationships develop more.
(The) Devil Is a Part-Timer! (TV) So-so Not bad, but pretty generic and nothing special. One thing I didn't like though is that it's supposedly about this super evil overlord but as soon as he becomes a harem MC he becomes this prefect goodie-two-shoes. It's like the writers are not able to have an MC that isn't super idealized even when he's supposed to be the devil... such a waste. However, one thing I did like is that this series was not set at a school for a change so there were no student councils or school cultural festivals that needed to be planned...You can tell I'm getting jaded huh...
Dimension W (TV) Decent Had an interesting start and the story looked promising but about halfway through it got really rushed and gimmicky.
(The) Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya (movie) Excellent Great continuation of the series. When this story doesn't get bogged down by Haruhi's stupid ideas like making a movie and other stuff and concentrates on what is actually interesting like the alternate dimensions, time traveling, and with actual bad guys this show is amazing. "The Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody" was my favorite episode of the previous series and this was like a whole movie expanding upon that. I would love to see the series continue off of this because the basic story is such an interesting one but they just haven't been using it to it's full potential, well until this movie. You gotta love Kyon too, his narration is just so fresh and witty. Keep it up.
Dragon Crisis! (TV) Decent Could have been better but they spent so much time on fan-service that the actual story was rushed and pointless. I did however, like the idea of lost preciouses. In the future they should just concentrate on finding lost precociouses with added dragon backstory but that will never happen because trips to the beach are what sell.
Dream Eater Merry (TV) Decent Could have been better, the story kinda drags along and then when it finally picks up it's over.
Durarara!! (TV) Excellent For some reason when I watched this I thought it was only 12 episodes so I watched the first half and then later when I realized my mistake I watched the rest. Because of that this series was like two different seasons to me. Personally, I preferred the first "season" because it focused more on Celty and her quest for her head which was the most interesting part of the series. The second half was sorta weak since it was all about Izaya's conspiracy but it was heavily weighed down by fuzzy logic and rampant misunderstandings common traits of bad anime. Another thing that I'm not sure how I feel about was how as the series progressed Celty's moe meter increased. I am not sure if that counts as character development or if the writers were trying to slowly contrast her from monster to misunderstood, or just spiraled into cute monster girl... I hope that they continue the story and have Celty eventually find her head since thats were I think the drama is at. One thing I know for sure though is that Shizuo is the man.
Durarara!!×2 Shō (TV) Decent I think I spent to much time between seasons so I lost all emotion for the characters (besides Celty). I just couldn't get into it like the first time. I don't know of I want to continue the other season now...
Eden of the East (TV) Excellent Why is this only 11 episodes when it was fantastic and meh like Bleach has 250+ episodes? Thankfully this series will be concluded with two movies!
Eden of the East: Paradise Lost (movie) Good Better than the last movie but I still don't understand how the movies could take such a great story shown in the anime series and totally twist it into some far reaching and utterly insensible mishmash. The series was great because it was relevant (to Japan) and had a message but also contained other elements that made it wholly enjoyable. Lastly, I realize that Taki had to go off to complete his goal but he definitively didn't need to leave Saki behind. Movie number 3?
Eden of the East: The King of Eden (movie) Decent What happened? This was no where near as good as the anime series. It lacked the suspense and originality of the first and didn't even tell a complete story rather it just set it up for the next movie and it made practically no sense. I would have been so angry if I had seen this in theaters. Why why why didn't they make another anime series?
ef: a tale of memories (TV) Good I didn't much care for Hiro's story as it was a run-of-the-mill love triangle with nothing unique. In fact, both girls were equally messed up so either way it didn't matter. Renji and Chihiro's story on the other hand was very interesting and dramatic. I could have watched a series just about them.
El Cazador de la Bruja (TV) So-so So unoriginal that it's boring. Definitely, not as good as it could have been.
Elemental Gelade (TV) Not really good Nothing original and rather boring. The characters were annoying (especially Cisqua, she made me want to rip my eyes out) and everything they did was unbelievably brainless which were usually common anime troupes that p*ss me off like bad guys not finishing the job and characters asking stupid questions instead of more obvious ones a normal person would ask. Lastly the story of the Edel Raid, their powers, and the songs, etc were just not very exciting. I don't really have a good reason why I finished this series.
Elfen Lied (TV) Very good Really good anime with some real thought provoking stuff under all the blood and boobs...
Elfen Lied (OAV) Decent
ERASED (TV) Excellent I really liked this one. I watched the whole thing in one go. Admittedly, I am a sucker for this type of premise as I loved Higurashi and Steins;Gate. However, the last episodes ans the pretty obvious twist were a let down compared to the earlier mystery and heavy foreboding tones of the early episodes. Definitely give it a watch.
Ergo Proxy (TV) Very good Pretty interesting story and Re-L is a babe. It's pretty confusing though and some of the episodes don't connect very well so it's hard to follow. After watching it it takes a while to figure out what everything means.
Eureka Seven (TV) Very good Pretty good anime but seemed to be lacking something. This is an anime that I would definitely recommend to young adults.
(The) Familiar of Zero (TV) Good This series has a very interesting story but since its a comedy it doesn't take it seriously at all. In fact, within each episode is around 10 breast jokes and it gets old quick. Furthermore, any situation that stirs any emotion within the viewer is ruined by it's "comedy" that seems to take precedent over any other aspect of the series. At one point the protagonist appears to die in a really touching build-up that is ruined much to quick by a lame joke.
(The) Familiar of Zero: Knight of the Twin Moons (TV) Good
(The) Familiar of Zero: Rondo of Princesses (TV) Good
Fantastic Children (TV) Very good Very interesting story though it drags along at times. However, I didn't see the twist coming at all though it kind of made the ending s*ck, well, for the protag anyway. Also, I'm not usually one to remark on the artistic style of the drawing but this series was a little on the poor side.
Fate/stay night (TV) Excellent Great anime. The only thing I didn't like was that Shiro was so unrealistically sexist. Saber (AKA King F*ing Arther) was summoned by him (though by mistake) to fight for him with her superior abilities but repeatedly throughout the anime he tells her not to fight and that he will fight instead and his only reason for doing so is because "girls shouldn't fight." I think they were trying to show Shiro as a noble person who shoulders all the responsibility but it just seemed ridiculous.
Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works (movie) So-so To rushed and nearly incomprehensible.
FLCL (OAV) Good Pure craziness.
Fortune Arterial: Akai Yakusoku (TV) So-so Too much sugar and spice and not enough vampire action. It's like they took Vampire Knight and stripped away anything good from it but left the vampires and then added heaps of Clannad style romance and drama. The only reason I watched this is because the early episodes suggested an interesting school-wide vampire conspiracy and the possibility that Kohei was more than he seemed. But no, it's just another student council watch-them-have-fun-planning-school-events anime. Seriously, how many times can someone watch a group of people plan a school cultural festival? I've never been to one (as I'm American...) but they seem pretty lame. Who was this anime made for? Japanese guys who like Twilight, abominated vampires, and student council planning?
Fractale (TV) Excellent Really good. Really fresh and interesting. It had a lot of themes that make you stop and think like the role of the internet in our lives, religion, the trials of overcoming sexual abuse, and possessing self-worth. I really like how the key to the fractale system turned out to be some girl that was used as the icon (not quite sure what exactly) for it in the past and then they had to keep recreating her every thousand years. I'll admit I got a little choked up at Nessa and Phryne's unification but I suppose that was actually the best of all the options, and I think everything will work out for phrynessa (see what I did there?) and Clain. I believe that If the anime of today could follow in Fractale's footsteps the industry may be alright in the end.
Freezing (TV) Good Pretty generic, back up boy to super-powered hottie but this time they decided that as action increases the ecchi (ecchi, which to me always meant sexual humor like the comedy of a protag blushing at a panty shot) meter should head towards nudity (nudity, which to me always meant overtly sexual = pornography = hentai ). I don't really like that aspect of it because its just there to appeal to dudes sick of ecchi that is deceptively prudish (can't really blame'em) and not to add another facet to the story or characters. In "Elfen Lied" I really thought the nudity was well handled because I thought that it was used more to show these killing machines as human and beautiful to appeal to us like ordinary women, which is something that should make a viewer stand back and think about deeper questions then what cup size she is. "Freezing's" nudity is just there for the lolboobs and reminds me of "Seikon no Qwaser" in that it was a loosely constructed based on a sexual fetish and not meant be taken seriously. But This just makes me sound like a pretentious a** and what can I say, I finished this series and I enjoyed the boobs with the rest of 'em.
From the New World (TV) Good Interesting and well done. However, I just didn't like it all that much. It had a feeling of dread throughout the whole thing that left me uneasy.
Full Metal Panic! (TV) Very good
Fullmetal Alchemist (TV) Excellent Great Anime...but alas, all good things must come to end. It's kinda too bad I watched this one before FA:Brotherhood because I guess that ones supposed to be more like the manga which will make it better...but I tried watching it and it's like watching the same thing all over again (Which some people do...but I don't like to watch anything twice)...oh well
Fullmetal Alchemist: The Movie - Conqueror of Shamballa Good
(The) Future Diary (TV) Good It's like if someone gave shinji from Eva a deathnote. But that's kinda too generous of a comparison since this anime was sorta a joke since it didn't take itself seriously. Which is a shame because It could have been so much better if it actually slowed down and made more sense. The world in which they lived and the way the characters interacted was absurd. There were no ramifications for anything anyone did and the characters kept flip flopping on whether they were good or bad rather than having any kind of development one way or the other. Lastly, when they started traveling through time I knew that the writers were just trolling us.
Ga-Rei-Zero (TV) Good Pretty good but I have mixed feelings about it since I don't like it when good characters turn bad. Also I don't know how I feel about the first part of the ending being in the beginning so that you know Yomi will turn bad right from the start. That just makes it hard to watch as Kagura and Yomi get close its like watching those crappy Starwars movies that came out recently because you already saw the older better ones so you know whats going to happen: Anakin Skywalker is going to become Darth Vader. But if they hadn't done that I guess the series would feel like it was missing something. Oh and why does this have a yuri tag? The two girls kiss once and it was a joke kiss... come on.
Galilei Donna (TV) Not really good Pretty terrible story but barely interesting enough that I didn't drop it. However, as soon as the little girl said she built a giant flying goldfish ship in three years all by herself I should have known better...
Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo (TV) Excellent Pretty interesting though it was a total bastardization of the original. Also, the animation style was very unique.
Gantz (TV) Good Putting aside the ridiculous premise laden with plot holes this show could have been epic but it had other ideas. Instead it chose a more thought provoking route which is surprising to say the least. This is not an anime about dead people wearing super suits kicking the crap out of aliens even though it seems that way at first. Instead, it is a (sort of) cleverly disguised way of making us think about moral dilemmas; is it right to take life? Is all life precious? the error of being a bystander when you can help others and how we live in a world dominated by death where people would rather watch someone die because it exciting then help them (which is almost reprimanding the viewer for watching this gory anime). Etc.. That's all well and good but I feel like the show got so bogged down trying to shove those down our throats that the character designs and development suffered for it and the plot and story elements were left to die a slow death. It’s a shame because once you learn this fact there is not much to this anime. How many times can you watch people just standing around while people they can help are being hurt or killed. How many times can you watch Masaru refuse to shoot a killer alien that already killed and injured people because he doesn't have the guts or is too morally high then said alien goes and kills more people. I get it. The anime wants me to think about these things but I just don't understand how these characters can struggle with their dilemmas: Kei and his indifference, Kei (girl) and her reliance on others, and Masaru and his reluctance to cause harm even when necessary (and what constitutes necessary?) for 26 episodes. For me this should have been lessons learned early and quickly through these life or death situations. Furthermore this anime differs from convention in that their battle experience should have increased as they survived more battles. Unfortunately, it doesn't and they are practically as useless at the end as they were in the beginning.
(The) Garden of Sinners (movie series) Excellent A little strange but a good story.
Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet (TV) Very good A well done series.
Gatchaman Crowds (TV) Not really good Lame. They spend most of the series just sitting around while the bad guy kills tons of people. Then they reveal themselves and no government entities really care that there are aliens, superheroes, or the ability to turn into a giant freely given to anyone. It definitely was different than other superhero shows but its differences weren't enough to overcome just a generally uninspired story.
GATE (TV) Good
GATE (TV 2) Good An interesting idea that I think would have been even more interesting with a more serious delivery. However, its still a pretty good watch. One thing I didn't like though is that the show kinda reads as Japanese military propaganda and anti-USA. I think if they took off the anime rose-tinted glasses the JSDF probably would have committed a lot terrible acts in the other world because its impossible to think that not one JSDF soldiers were a bad egg. In reality, the Japanese are not a group that really likes outsiders. But in this anime they have no problems dealing with all matter of races and creatures from another dimension. Honestly, I think it would have been a better more realistic story if the soldiers had actual human flaws and desires.
Ghost Hound (TV) Good This anime could have been excellent since it contained such an interesting story and characters but at times the presentation was too slow and the ending was too rushed.
Ghost Hunt (TV) Good Quality series but the stories are pretty predictable and based off stock ghost stories. Also, Mai really made the show unbearable at times. She is so annoying and the fact that she has dreams that are crucial to solving the mystery but doesn't feel the need to share them is moronic. They love to play up how Mai is just a typical high school girl but it gets annoying quick when after every paranormal episode Mai is like "Whoa that's just like a dream I had..." If I happen to be in a paranormal investigation and I have dreams that are predicting the future, revealing clues, or providing out-of-body-like observations I would keep a journal and write them down and then share them with everyone but that would be too clever for Mai...
Ghost in the Shell (movie) Excellent Excellent.
Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (movie) Excellent Just as good as the first. I hope they will make more.
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (TV) Excellent Solid but I liked the movies better. Anyways, keep making more!
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd GIG (TV) Masterpiece Excellent, I liked it better then the first series. Seriously just keep it coming.
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex: Solid State Society (movie) Very good Great story, pretty much if it's GitS its going to be good. The scene where Togasa almost shot himself to protect his daughter was wicked intense. I hope the story continues.
(The) Girl Who Leapt Through Time (movie) Excellent Good story a little touching and there were a few times I thought it might have gotten really sad.
Glass Maiden (TV) So-so Not very good but not completely terrible, however, Manami was absolutely annoying.
GLASSLIP (TV) So-so An over-dramatized simple love story. The art and music are well done but the story is pointless.
Gosick (TV) Masterpiece I really enjoyed this one. It had a great story that intermingled plots and very interesting characters. However, the mysteries were never that challenging because every piece of evidence and any character present was relevant. Add that too the stuff only Victorique could know and the answers were pretty easy to come too. There never were any red herrings or false leads. So basically, it was like saying it was Mr. Green with the candlestick-holder in the observatory since Mr. Green was the only person not dead and then Victorique would say that hes left handed or some piece of evidence that we couldn't find out as viewers and that shows her intelligence and wallah. Another thing I didn't like was that everything was too relevant, like you would learn about an old ghost story which would then be instrumental in solving a case five seconds later. Oh someone was murdered in the cemetery what a coincidence I was just recently told the story of a killer ghost who haunts that cemetery... Another flaw in this series was that time almost seemed warped in that the stories people told seemed old or the books that that contained them seemed ancient but then they would be like oh this happened ten years ago. Ten years isn't a long time and certainly not long enough to have these stories so well known, committed to writing, or turned into plays.
Ground Control to Psychoelectric Girl (TV) Decent Boring, the story was incomplete, and I felt a lot of the conversation/meaning was lost in translation,
Guilty Crown (TV) Good Damn, I had a really good review. but it didn't save for some reason. I don't feel like retyping my thoughts. It was alright.
Guin Saga (TV) Good Not a bad story but pretty pointless to watch since not a single godd*mn plot-line was finished. I'd watch more if they made it and with 130 volumes of source material there has to be some resolution in there somewhere.
Gunslinger Girl (TV) So-so Take girls with depressing pasts and stick them in a hopelessly depressing situation and then go nowhere in the story such that the viewers is thankful that at least it didn't get any worse for them. The end result is 13 episodes of watching someone drag their nails across a chalkboard. Usually in literature, movies and ect. if it starts out tragic it is going to 180 somewhere and become uplifting. I waited for this climax or change, I was hoping for Jose to take Henrietta away or at least give her a truly "unconditioned" happiness but nothing happened at all. I thought this series might be good because it has a foundation like "Phantom" however, as it turns out, its missing everything that made phantom good and is replaced with loli's with guns but its "deep" so it makes sense...
Gurren Lagann (TV) Very good Solid.
H2O ~Footprints in the Sand~ (TV) Weak I did not like this anime for many reasons. Characters should have flaws but that doesn't mean you have put up with them. Hirose traumatized by the loss of his mother goes psycho-blind which is animey and interesting. But it shows right away that he's weak so it's no surprise that when things get tough he goes f'ing insane and beats the crap out of his girlfriend. God d*mn I was p*ssed. But that's not enough, as he then goes on to make her assume the role of his dead mother as he acts like a stupid child. How is this guy the center of a harem situation? He seriously, needs to be in a mental institution. Another thing I didn't like was how Hayami was treated by everyone. How does what your family did when you were a child equal to daily beatings, living homeless life, and being hated by everyone. What makes it worse is when she finally become friends with these people they just complain over and over how their lives suck while her life is 100% worse and yet she consoles them. Another thing I didn't like was the incorporation of the "footprints poem" though its the only thing that makes the title make sense. But, seriously, can you get anymore cliche? Lastly, and most importantly, I hated the last episode and ending with all my heart. Why oh why would they have Hayami die in the same way his mother did? and then they cop out with a reincarnation at the ending. WTF? You can't do that. Why didn't they just have Hirose regain his sight in that instant and save Hayami and in a way his mother? Why not? Because the writers are dicks, that's why. Good ending are for chumps. One thing I do have to give props to was the fact that Hirose never actually regained his sight through the series he just thought he did. They really should have played that up more because that was actually an interesting idea. Man, I'm p*ssed I still can't believe they killed Hayami...
Haganai (TV) Decent A let down. You wait the whole series for the MC to get any feelings at all for any of the girls he hangs around but nothing develops. Also Yozara is a bully and a terrible person I couldn't understand why they just let her pick on Sena all the time. Lastly, for a club that was supposed to be about making friends they don't really do much to try and make friends or really do anything. Seriously, they spent four different episodes playing various video games and only went to the beach because its a harem anime so a swimsuit episode is "a must". Nearly a total waste of time.
Haibane Renmei (TV) Good Very interesting.
Hamatora (TV)
Heaven's Memo Pad (TV) Good Could have been better but I applaud it for taking a more serious direction when most anime today is pretty mind numbing but a safer bet.
Hellsing (TV) Good I liked it due to the characters but the story was pretty lackluster.
Heroic Age (TV) Excellent A complete surprise. This series began like every other space mecha anime and it suffered some of their same ailments. But It had a lot of things that made it great and stand out as a quality anime. I didn't think they were going to be able to finish the story and make me feel content with it but through all odds they did it and I enjoyed it. It's not a masterpiece, barely any anime can claim to be, but it's a diamond in the rough compared to the crap that has been produced recently.
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (live-action movie) Not really good Pretty much awful but if you're a fan of the anime/manga you should probably check it out. You kinda have to give them a break for trying to do such a deep story (even if its just one story arc) in a condensed movie with I'm guessing a really small budget. In the end the movie really doesn't reveal anything the anime/manga is actually about and it just looks like your run of the mill person goes crazy and doesn't know it story except this movie leaves a lot to be answered because its missing all the tidbits from the other arcs. I feel that for the people who haven't seen the anime/manga this movie would just be horrible and makes no sense, which is kinda sad because I think movie adaptations of anything need to be good by themselves so people who are not fans can become fans after watching it.
Higurashi no Naku Koroni Gaiden Nekogoroshi-hen (OAV) Good Didn't really add anything to the story but more is more!
Hoshizora e Kakaru Hashi (OAV) So-so
Howl's Moving Castle (movie) Good I don't think Christian Bale did a great job as Howl...he didn't add any emotion to the role. It was still an interesting story though.
HYOUKA (TV) Excellent Not what I was expecting but it turned out to be pretty good even as most anime is becoming worse. The characters, especially Oreki, were good but a little annoying at times. However, I did find some of the "mysteries" to be pretty lame and contingent on some very big assumptions. I hope they make more because I want to see Oreki grow even more as a character and most definitely a little romance with Chitanda.
Infinite Stratos (TV) Good Pretty generic, could have used more story, and more depth to the many characters.
Interlude (OAV) Decent Not terrible, but not completely original for all its twists and turns. The endings build up was pretty blah but the ending was actually good and thoughtful.
(The) irregular at magic high school (TV) Decent Ive seen worse for sure but this didn't really do anything for me. The futuristic magical school setting seems to be over done recently and the protagonist is a total Gary-Stu (male version of Mary-Sue). If he can make or do anything and beat any opponent then whats the point of anything?
Is This a Zombie? (TV) Excellent This is probably the first comedy anime that made me laugh hysterically... I truly enjoyed it and I hope they make more.
Is This a Zombie? of the Dead (TV) So-so I found the first season hilarious. But this season was just pandering nonsense. A real let down.
ItaKiss (TV) Weak I didn’t actually finish this one. I gave up after their honeymoon (ep. 15) but I feel like I completed it because seriously what is there left for me to watch? Girl is in love with boy. Boy doesn’t return love. Over time boy falls in love. They get married and live happily ever after. So all that was left to watch was “happily ever after” and no doubt it’s going to be a bumpy road to happiness filled with more romantic misadventures but I’ve had enough. For one, Naoki is a jerk, who does not deserve Kotoko's love at all. Heh it’s almost like most real life relationships! Except, this series is not realistic at all at least to my American sensibilities. Their relationship was so flimsy she was always trying to figure out if he actually liked her. Then they get married out of the blue after never actually dating, skipping to fiancées for a couple of weeks and in that time only kissing three times. If people really enter into these kinds of marriages then I understand why divorce rates are so high. Another thing I didn’t like about this series is how it pulls the sudden illness card a lot. Oh no we need a temporary climax!...I know just give them appendicitis!
Jormungand (TV) Good See "Jormungand: Perfect Order" for comment since I watched both together.
Jormungand Perfect Order (TV) Good I liked that it had more adult themes since I feel that anime that have adult topics are few and far between these days. However, I personally, like shows that have a main story line that can be intermittent or direct but its got to have a main purpose. Jormungand chose to not really focus on anything specific besides a group traveling around, selling arms, getting in and out of trouble etc. In that sense it was kinda bland. Then in the second half it starts to have reason but by that point it just seemed tacked on. That aside, I enjoyed it and really liked the characters, as well as the thought provoking subject of today state of warfare.
Jyu-Oh-Sei (TV) Decent The animation style and characters were refreshing but the story was rushed and ultimately sub-par. I think with more episodes, better explanations, time for more in-depth characters this series could have been great but as it stands now it was not that enjoyable. Also, the ending was horrible and the greater meaning was lost because it was so rushed.
K (TV) So-so Reminded me of a watered down "Guilty Crown." But the story telling seems to focus on the wrong things such that it takes a few episodes to figure out how their world even works. When the ground work is finally all set nothing too entertaining or original happens and then it just ends.
K: Missing Kings (movie)
K: Return of Kings (TV)
Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress (TV) Decent Seemed like it was trying to be "Attack on Titan" with trains. It was alright but nothing special.
Kaiji (TV) Decent This series starts off really good but with each new gamble it just got more and more obnoxious and boring.
Kamisama Dolls (TV) Very good Not what I was expecting so I was pleasantly surprised. I liked the op though it didn't fit with the mood of the anime but it was well done. The story was interesting but could have made things a little clearer also it wanted to cover so much in 13 episodes so it never actually got around to the main point of the story..to be continued perhaps? The characters were also very good however what was up with Hibino's bust? I like a nice rack as much as the next guy but her's were just soo large they looked wrong...
Kämpfer (TV) Not really good Fan-service junk and the main character is annoyingly retarded.
Kannagi: Crazy Shrine Maidens (TV) Good Interesting show, I found it pretty refreshing. I liked its self-depreciating aspects hilarious. It's a shame it's so short.
Kanon (TV 2/2006) Excellent Excellent story that was sad but had a happy ending.
(The) Kawai Complex Guide to Manors and Hostel Behavior (TV) Good Not bad, but the jokes got pretty repetitive and the romance progressed at even sub "Kimi ni Todoke" speed.
Kaze no Stigma (TV) Decent Not bad but the characters are annoying and the story progresses too slowly.
Kekkaishi (TV) Excellent Solid series that seemed to me to be a pretty good contender in the "big anime" category. I'm pretty satisfied with what happened in this series so I don't really have any complaints only things that I hope they show in future installments (wishful thinking?). I would really like them to delve more into the secrets of Karasumori and why it is so powerful. Also, it would be interesting to see what happens after a few years like when Yoshimori is 16 and Tokine is 18, maybe then we could see some real romance. Or I guess I could read the manga but I have so much more anime to watch.
Kids on the Slope (TV) Excellent Music and anime work well together. This series was like "Nodame Cantabile" for dudes. Great story, characters and art, however, the last two episodes were extremely rushed and condensed a huge chunk of story.
Kiki's Delivery Service (movie) Good
Kimi ni Todoke - From Me to You (TV) Good Pretty good story though I somehow feel weird for watching it because it is 100% Shojo. But, hey I like a good love story too. However, Sawako is borderline disabled with zero social ability. Furthermore, her line of thought is so innocently immature its unrealistic but after watching the show you start to like her and begin to see her innocence as a strength. And of course it has the Japanese motif; as a women if you're not happy or who you want to be all you have to do is find a boy/man. I would Recommend this anime to lonely teenage girls, aka the target audience.
Kimi ni Todoke 2nd Season (TV) Good Not as good as the first season but good none-the-less. However, where the misunderstandings were cute in the first season they were grating and hard to watch in the second season. For a shojo series and with such an uninteresting seeming premise I surprisingly like this a lot.
Kino's Journey (TV) Good I'm not a big fan of stories without a purpose so I found this series a little boring specially since a lot of the episodes had reoccurring themes. However, it was different, still sort of interesting and thought provoking.
Kiss×sis (OAV)
Kiss×sis (TV) Its like porn, its only good when your in the mood. But, at leat porn delivers.
Knights of Sidonia (TV) Decent Just like every other unknown alien versus human mecha series. Seriously is there some kind of guide book out there? Also the character animations really fell into the uncanny valley with some pretty creepy looking faces.
Kodomo no Jikan (TV) Good Man I must have really sunk to have watched this loli crap. But the story wasn't so bad sexually expressive elementary school girls aside
Kurau: Phantom Memory (TV) Good At first I wasn't too into this series but it gets better the more you watch it. In the end it's nothing special but not a complete waste of time.
Kurenai (TV) Decent This anime was so bland but it had potential. It opens up a lot of possibilities but just ends up slice of life with other crap thrown in. Like what's with the horn? it just seemed really out of place in this anime. Which is funny because it was the only thing I found interesting. Also, Benika looked exactly like "Carmon San Diego."
Kurokami The Animation (TV) Very good Pretty cool story. It reminded me a lot of Shana. One thing I didn't like was the bad guy whose really good twist. Why couldn't he just be honest with everyone instead of acting all evil.
Kurozuka (TV) Decent An interesting idea taken in the wrong direction with not enough episodes to do it correctly. Furthermore, the action was subpar and the bad guys were too extreme to be believable.
Last Exile (TV) Good Interesting but I often found it confusing cause the story is pretty contrived.
Last Exile: Fam, The Silver Wing (TV) Very good It had been so long since I watched the last "Last Exile" that didn't think Fam's story really had anything to do with it until the recap episode. I totally forgot about Dio from the first season and I really liked how his character developed and the appearance of Alvis was great. But I didn't really like Claus and Lavie showing up since it really makes the horrible timeline obvious. Rather than two years it should have been a few generations since the exiled people returned since kingdoms aren't created in just a few years. None of the immigrant nations act like they just got of a giant spaceship two years ago and started settling down. No, they look like they've been around for a few decades and where did the Exile that Alvis can control go? And why doesn't anyone know about exiles or how they are controlled until one falls from the sky? These questions made the story muddled and if they didn't try to quickly mash the two stories together could have been better answered. Anyways, I don't think I liked this one as much as the first but I don't know since it's been so long. This series suffered from heavy anime logic but I did like Giselle though, she's great.
(The) Legend of the Legendary Heroes (TV) Good First of all, this anime has to have one of the worst names of all time. Secondly, this anime could have been great but it used weird relationship dynamics that make no sense reminiscent of Berserk, tried to tack on a preposterously deep understory reminiscent of Tears to Tiara, then added horrible humor based on dango reminiscent of every crappy anime ever. Luckily the characters and world are interesting enough even though they are running around being illogical. Sadly, this anime uses its 24 episodes to beat around the bush when it could have accomplished the same amount of plot in 12 and then continued the story with the remaining 12. This series only exists to prepare you for more but it's not like all that much occurred making it necessary to watch before the sequel, a pet peeve of mine.
Level E (TV) Decent Not what I thought it was at all. I'm still not sure how I feel about it. Some of it was interesting while some of it was insanely stupid.
Log Horizon (TV) Excellent
Log Horizon (TV 2) I watches season 1 and 2 together so I will comment on them both together. The show is great. Instead of focusing on just the players, like similar 'trapped in a video game' anime, it focuses on the world and the NPC's that live in that world. It's really a novel idea. The characters are interesting and the way it talks about common things in MMOs like grinding is funny. However, the end of the second season started to get a little weird with the communication with the moon. I hope that they make more so that all of that can be sorted out. I'm also interested to see what the bad guys plans are which have really only been alluded to.
Lord Marksman and Vanadis (TV) Decent Nothing special, but not a total waste. It's a good watch for some fantasy anime war that doesn't take itself too seriously.
Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions! (TV) So-so Autism - The Anime. Basically, this anime was a copy of "Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko" just replace aliens with magic. I wasn't a big fan.
Lovely Complex (TV) Decent It starts off like Toradora but the characters are much more annoying. Basically, it becomes the story of a great girl who tries so hard to win over a piece of crap guy. However, you can really only fault him for stringing her along for like two years just because he "hasn't decided his feelings" or some other anime bull. But, At least he doesn't take advantage of her feelings (besides receiving a bunch of gifts). In the end, he turns out to be alright, and better yet they are a pretty good match. One thing I liked about this series is that it chronicles pretty much their whole high school experience so we got to see a wide range of h.s. drama unlike similar anime that usually cover only like half a year.
Lunar Legend Tsukihime (TV) Good Pretty good, nothing too special though.
Maid Sama! (TV) Excellent I really enjoyed this series. I liked the characters and I actually found the comedy funny which was refreshing. However, one thing I didn't like is that, although more is always good, was 26 episodes really necessary for Misaki to finally confess her feelings? It's not like anything new happened within the 13 extra episodes it would just mean Usui only got to save her 10 times instead of 20. Cause that's pretty much all he does and he is always there. I really enjoyed Usui's character but I feel that he has a serious obsession with Misaki to always be near her, watching her, and listening in on her conversations. When she calls him a "stalker alien," I feel like part of that was actually true. But of course it's not sketchy at all because he is attractive lol. I can't really blame the show though because it's based on shojo principles and everyone knows that girls secretly want to be saved by knights in shining armor and the only way for Usui to accomplish these many many tasks would be for him to always be around. Either way I'm glad they finally got together they make a very entertaining couple.
(La) Maison en Petits Cubes (movie) So-so
MAOYU (TV) Very good An interesting take on the demon-king vs hero genre. The economic aspects were sort of interesting in a Spice and Wolf kind of way but it was so watered down it was like economics for dummies. Also, the civilization improvements were kind of laughable in the way Maoyu kept cranking them out like she was playing a real time strategy game. In the end though, I wanted to see the results of their master plan but 12 episodes is just never enough.
Mardock Scramble: The First Compression (movie) Very good Very interesting and well done but pretty cheap since it doesn't tell a complete story. One thing i would have liked is if they explained more about mardoch scramble and how their world works since I still don't kinda get it.
Mardock Scramble: The Second Combustion (movie) Not really good I still don't really get it. I feel like they had some good ideas somewhere but then did some acid and this is the result. Again the movie didn't tell a complete story. Also, it's not even as good as the first movie.
Mashiroiro Symphony - The color of lovers (TV) So-so Pretty boring story. I thought the guy was too good or rather the girls thought he was too good when he was actually pretty lame. Also, the drama was way forced.
Mayo Chiki! (TV) Not really good the epitome of mass-produced moe crap.
Mekakucity Actors (TV) Decent This anime tried to tell way to much in too short a span. I understand what happened but because it was so rushed I didn't have time to care about what was happening. I feel like this anime focused on the visuals and not so much the story. They didn't seem care if the story made sense, was original or even entertaining as long as there was something artsy going on in the background.
(The) Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (TV) Good Its an interesting idea...but the story never gets really exciting...there are so many twists it could take but it never picks any of them and instead ends up just like pretty much an ordinary school situation...For example, in part 4 Kyon is almost killed and his attempted killer says that more people will try to kill him...but that never happens...Who are "the Agency", the Data Overmind, and the time travelers...it would be great if we could learn more about them...I feel that if this manga/anime took itself more seriously it could be really good
(The) Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (TV 2009 renewal) Good It was good to see a little backstory to some of the older version episodes especially "Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody" but the "Endless Eight" episodes were so boring...imagine seeing the same episode eight times in a row...that is basically what it was...I kinda can't believe they got away with that...
Mermaid Forest (TV) Good Interesting story but you get pretty sick of hearing about mermaids fast and jeeze mermaid are overly-amazing in this since their flesh, blood, livers, ashes, and whatever else has all these varying degrees of granting immortality/turning you into a monster...
Mirai Nikki (OAV) What was the point of this? Either make an OAV with a few full length episodes or a series this is just a waste of resources. Could be interesting though I think they should make it more serious like a new Deathnote but I don't know anything about the manga.
Monster (TV) Excellent Excellent anime...but it really made me angry watching it...my moral sense tells me that if you can save at least one person from being murdered by killing a murderer you should do it...but Tenma had several chances to kill Johan...literally with a gun pointed right at him... but he just couldn't do it...instead he just watches Johan rip chaos across Germany...slaughtering pretty much every single secondary character....I would kill Johan...and if that makes me a monster than so be it...To stop Johan you have to get your hands dirty...plain and simple...Tenma is willing to do everything to stop him...except stop him and quite frankly its just ridiculous.
MoonPhase (TV) Good I liked this one a lot for some reason.
Moribito - Guardian of the Spirit (TV) Good Very well produced and a real solid anime however, I found the story and characters to be very boring.
Mōryō no Hako (TV) Very good Very well made though I'm not sure exactly how I feel about it. The story is both good (deep, filled with symbolism, and over-arching) and bad (boils down to not all that much, with the obvious answers being correct and contingent upon some dumb ideas), and also the presentation is both interesting and deceptively confusing. One thing that I specifically didn't like was that these guys sit around figure out who the murderer is (the obvious guy) and who he is going to murder next and they don't stop it. However, as far as psychological anime go this is probably a must see.
Mōryō no Hako: Hako no Yūrei no Koto (OAV) Decent A compilation of the series from the point of view of one of the characters that got forgotten about. Doesn't add anything new.
My Neighbor Totoro (movie) Decent Cute but sort of lacking.
My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU (TV) Decent Basically, a classier "Haganai" where the club actually does stuff. And once again, the premise is so stale that it was boring though the characters were interesting, this time around. Also, I think I may have graduated from harem anime to the point where if no real romance develops between any of the characters after repeated set-ups I just start to lose interest. Additionally, I need a story and not just more of the same over and over or at least an over-arching back-story or I will also get bored.
My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU (OAV)
My-HiME (TV) Very good Pretty typical anime story though I liked that it was long and had some interesting characters. One thing I didn't like was that it had the typical person who could tell the main character everything right from the start and prevent everything but for some reason doesn't. I hate that. Another thing I hate was all the characters were quick to make hasty decisions and if they just stopped to think they could have prevented themselves a lot of grief but I guess that is a tragic flaw.
Myself; Yourself (TV) Decent Man, I've never seen so many characters with problems. I didn't like this series all that much because it just kept hammering away with awful things happening to good people. It tried to make up for it with a quick "10 years in the future scene" where everyone's happy but it was too little too late and this series just left me bummed.
(The) Mystic Archives of Dantalian (TV) Good Could have been better with more direction. I liked its mood though.
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (movie) Excellent
Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV) Good Overrated. It tried to be so deep and philosophical but in the end it had so many lose ends it barely made sense. I hate Shinji he is the worst protagonist I have ever seen. He has the biggest daddy complex, and is a cowardly weak person. He disgusts me.
Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion (movie) Good A better ending but still a mediocre ending to a mediocre series. It also made me hate Shinji even more.
Night Raid 1931 (TV) Good Not bad but but something was definitely off. I don't know if they just assume since it's Japanese and Chinese history the viewer knows whats going on but I found it hard to follow and felt that it painted a pretty lopsided view as most historical anime tend to do. Also once you strip away its historical influence the story is pretty generic with the typical evil boss that no one ever suspects (even though everyone does) and the bad guy turning out to be not that bad just misunderstood. We're better than that, give us something fresh...
Nighthead Genesis (TV) Not really good This series is decent till episode 12 then starts to go down hill. There are too many lesser stories and not enough of the main one. Then when its over....they go out and stop an earthquake (sorta)...what a bad finish... Shows like this make me mad that they got 24 episodes but much better shows only get 12.
Nisemonogatari (TV) Not really good I don't get it. Sure the girls are cute but the story, the way the characters talk and interact, and the setting is just so absurd. But when you strip it all away and see what the characters are trying to say the story and interaction isn't even meaningful. I seriously think that the people who think this series is ground breaking are deluding themselves so that they can watch a guy molest pretty girls including grade-schoolers and his own sisters and say that it's deep man you just don't get it. It's the worst kind of trash, trash that thinks it's art.
No Game, No Life (TV) Very good I liked it. I found the premise to be interesting and the strategy exciting. Some of the schemes Blank pulled were pretty far-fetched but thrilling none-the-less. I could do without all the ecchi humor but anime doesn't think it can survive without it so I guess I just have to deal with it. Hope they make more, Blank still needs to conquer 14 more races.
No. 6 (TV) Good Maybe I've never had that kind of friendship but Shion and Nezumi had a very intimate relationship that kinda creeped me out. The story was pretty uninspired and went for the crazy scifi conspiracy when a simpler story would have sufficed since it was more of a story of dualism between the insider and the outsiders.
Nodame Cantabile (TV) Masterpiece I almost didn't watch this because I thought the music aspect was going to be lame (same reason I don't watch sports related anime) but once I started it I realized the music complements the romance beautifully. I really liked the characters because they weren't over the top for example anime has a tendency to make jerk characters exaggerated to the point that they are unrelatable and utterly irritating to watch. However, Chiaki has just the right amount of dickishness that you start to like the guy and find it funny rather than offensive. Noda, was a little overblown and annoying sometimes but somehow I found it funny and she still had depth that made her well rounded. In conclusion this is a great series, you can tell it was put together by people who appreciate music as well as anime and it really shines brightly.
Nodame Cantabile: Paris (TV) Good It didn't give me the same feeling as the last one or maybe it does but its just too similar that I've grown tired of it. Either way I didn't like it as much and I don't think it added much of anything to the story. The characters and the romance just seem to be cycling over and over through the same developments such that it feel like nothing is never really gained.I should probably watch the last season now just to get it over with but I need a break...
Noein - to your other self (TV) Good Interesting story but its kinda hard to understand and doesn't make much sense but out of the anime that are like that this one isn't that bad. One thing I didn't like is how Yuu was sort of an anti-protagonist since he's always brooding and is not brave at all but I supposed not every story has a knight in shining armor and if they did that would be pretty boring. Also, I'm not usually one to critique the animation quality but this one was a little poor and during high intensity scenes the quality was so horrible it looked as if it were scribbled.
Noir (TV) Decent Boringgg. For top class assassins these girls sure b*tch a lot. Also, they don't dodge bullets they just stand there and let the bullets fly by them because in this anime they are the only ones who can hit a target.
Noragami (TV) Very good A pretty good show all around. Made me laugh and was interesting... plus Hiyori was cute but not too cute that she was annoying. I was pleasantly surprised since I haven't found a show I liked in quite a while.
Now and Then, Here and There (TV) Excellent Tough to watch but really gives you an appreciation for your own life. Sure, war, genocide, torture, hunger, thirst, rape, and child exploitation have happened and continue to happen in our world but have any of us had to personally live through it? If you haven't you're lucky and you probably never even thought about it.
Occult Academy (TV) Very good This series starts off amazing but burns out very quickly. You can literally see the degradation of story and animation quality episode by episode. It was still an interesting idea but once you strip away its uniqueness in anime its story is actually pretty poor with no real substance and a lot of filler. It basically turns into Scooby Doo and when they actually get to the point you're left wondering why the writers went the way they did when they started with pure excellence. Furthermore, episode 11-13 had so much magic and witches it turned into something like “Nagi” which didn’t hold with the feeling of the show. One thing that really bugged me was the shows idea of time travel which really made no sense at all. In the end, it really s*cked for Maya because she is around 17 and the only Bunmei left is 5 so she had to wait 13 years to pursue the man she loved and by then she was 30. In conclusion, the show was good but it could have been excellent with more direction, luckily, Maya being a tsundere babe totally helped.
Ōkami-san & Her Seven Companions (TV) Decent The fairytale aspect was lame since the tales became almost unrecognizable accept for the obvious names. Whats the point of using fairytale as a base if you don't follow the tale at all? In my opinion, the fairytale hindrance made the bank mission fillers weird and kind of retarded. Also, I found the narrator, although I know she is a famous anime voice, to be totally annoying and for Ryōko the animators pretty much took one of their earlier characters and made her taller...can you guess who? I found this series to be a let down, the only reason I didn't drop it was because I was sort of interested in the main story and Ryōko and Ryōshi's relationship. But even these were a let down because neither went anywhere.
Okamikakushi - Masque of the Wolf (TV) Decent I was expecting something like Higurashi but this was nowhere near as good.
Oreimo (TV) Good Not bad but I suspect it was not what fans of this genre were expecting. But seriously, the way this anime is presented it ended it the only way it could, with nothing really changing. I really liked its serious yet nonchalant view of otaku, their culture, and how it is views by outsiders. However, I did not like the characters, Kirino is a selfish jerk and is too much "tsun" and not enough "dere" that I absolutely hated her. Kyouske, on the other hand was a likable character, but the way he lets his sister walk all over him just did not make sense to me. For the life of me I can't understand why he, who is not a masochistic, would go to such lengths for someone who treats him so horribly and gets no real thanks in return.
Our Home's Fox Deity (TV) Very good This show could have been anything with its interesting characters and intriguing premise but sorta squanders it with generic slice of life. Never-the-less, I contemplated putting it in my all time favorites since I liked it despite it's lack of any main story besides "what should we do today?". Though, I think I would probably like anything with a character like Tenko Kugen in it.
Ozma (TV) So-so Boring.
Pale Cocoon (OAV) Weak It didn't keep me interested and the twist didn't blow me away. However, it's so short it's worth a look.
Pandora Hearts (TV) Very good Interesting story but a little contrived. The characters were good but could have been richer, especially Oz who learns the same lesson every episode or so it would seem. The pacing was horrible with extra time spent revisiting the same places for extraneous tidbits while the "ending" was completely rushed. I remember looking at how many episodes I had left, realizing there was only two, and sadly coming to the conclusion that there was no way that they could bring the story to any meaningful conclusion...bummer. So where's the end? Are they planning a second season? If not what was the point of the first since it gives no conclusion at all. Perhaps this wasn't successful enough to continue but either way I enjoyed it.
Paprika (movie) Good
Parasyte -the maxim- (TV) Very good Really good but it doesn't go anywhere. At first its really interesting and then part way through it just sorta crashes.
(The) Perfect Insider (TV) Good
Persona -trinity soul- (TV) Bad I saw Persona 4 and I thought it was pretty good so I though I would check this one out too. Boy was it a waste of time. 26 episodes of unintelligible story, straw-characters, and pseudo deepness. I should have dropped it. Seriously, why didn't I?
Persona 4: The Animation (TV) Good The characters were "beary" interesting but the main story and persona fights were pretty lame. Yu is probably the most level-headed protagonist ever, which was refreshing.
Phantom ~Requiem for the Phantom~ (TV) Masterpiece Amazing series, if only all anime could be as good. Good characters and great story. My only qualms are that at some points it seemed too long and at other times it seemed not long enough with three seasons worth of material crammed into one. Another thing I didn't like, though the story is the story, is what happened to Cal...One episode shes a sweet little girl who you thought met a tragic end but a couple of episodes (a year) later shes a hateful gun toting women. Her story was really sad and she didn't even get a good finish, instead just your typical anime emotional craziness that makes no sense what-so-ever. Lastly, what was the deal with the ending? It felt like a big slap in the face to the viewers.
(The) Place Promised in Our Early Days (movie) Decent Very well made but the story was a little lacking.
Polyphonica (TV) Decent Good but missing a lot. It has a good foundation but doesn't really go anywhere.
(Le) Portrait de Petite Cossette (OAV) Decent Interesting story but because it was only three episodes it was so crammed that half the time you didn't know what was going on.
Problem children are coming from another world, aren't they? (TV) So-so Reminded me of "No Game No Life" but it lacked all the interesting characters or incentive to watch it.
Psychic Detective Yakumo (TV) So-so Nothing special.
Psycho-Pass (TV) Good A well done take on pretty tired story. Needs a conclusion though.
Psycho-Pass 2 (TV) So-so Not as good as the first season. Pretty convoluted and lost a lot of its charm.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica (TV) Excellent This series was good but not as amazing as it is touted everywhere, it definitely has amazing parts but it has just as much drag. It starts like any light and airy magical girl anime..until one of the girls gets decapitated...and then this overwhelming feeling of despair just get heavier and heavier as the series progresses. It definitely wasn't what I expected and I found it hard to watch since you have to admit the story lags terribly in the middle and I wasn't predicting a good finale. Luckily, this series has a stellar ending that puts a good finish to the story. Some other highlights include the characters which actually have depth and an interesting art-style that found pretty lame but hey at least they tried something new.
R.O.D -The TV- So-so I wasn't a big fan of this series or it's characters. It also got more in more absurd as the story progressed.
Rage of Bahamut: Genesis (TV) So-so Story and characters were to videogamy. I wasn't really impressed.
RahXephon (TV) Decent Seems to me somebody wanted to redo Evangeline with less s*ckiness and I think they succeeded partly but in the end I was still wondering what the h*ll I watched.
Read or Die (OAV) So-so What is going on...who are the bad guys...who are the good guys...? Nothing is explained well at all.
Recorder and Randsell (TV) So-so funny but really weird.
Red Data Girl (TV) Good This show was like if you took "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" and instead of espers, aliens, and ect you have spiritualism and folklore. Then, switch out Haruhi with Sawako from "kimi ni Todoke" and you get the female lead. It was interesting, but as stated, felt all done before. Also, the story seemed rushed since it only had a measly 12 ep. I'd watch more, if they promise to take the story somewhere.
Redline (movie) So-so Great characters but not enough story.
Rental Magica (TV) So-so I dropped this one a while ago but decided to give it another shot. Man, I wish I had stuck with my gut. This series is pretty blah. The characters were interesting even though they just kept using the same spells over and over, and their relationships stayed in a never developing recursion. But man the stories and the stupid magical explanations, its like they were just vomiting ancient occult words so they had a reason for dragons and magical robots. Ah yes, the reason this giant flying neon green swordfish is attacking people is because an energy field powered by the trismagistical array of those unsuspiciously placed ancient Egyptian rune stones is reverberating through that nearby fish market and channeling the hatred and fear of the souls of the dead fish. That's elementary magic! It needed more direction and an actual story would have helped.
Requiem from the Darkness (TV) Good Interesting series that reminded me of "Hell Girl" in the way it was an odd group of supernatural people bringing punishment on the the wicked. But, unlike what I've seen of HG it had characters and sort of plot and every episode wasn't stand-alone. I also enjoyed seeing some of the cultural Japanese ghost stories since they are pretty far out and much different from over here.
Robotics;Notes (TV) Good Pretty good but exponentially less good then Steins;Gate. Maybe it's because I'm not into giant robo anime that I wasn't blown away by the premise. Still pretty good. I look forward to more anime with a semicolon in the middle!
Rosario + Vampire (TV) Good
Rosario + Vampire Capu2 (TV) Good
Rozen Maiden (TV) Decent weird. A guy plays with magic dolls. Ha Ha. It's really strange since they are only like three feet tall and he carries them around. Plus there is some kind of romance brewing with him and one of the dolls...
Rozen Maiden: Detective Kun-Kun (special) Not really good Pretty funny. I imagined the dolls watching this and being all excited...hah
Rozen Maiden: Ouvertüre (special) Good A good bit of information to the story. Guess this is the end of the anime though...
Rozen Maiden: Träumend (TV) Good Better than the first season since it actually gets into the alice game and Jun isn't as much a wimp.
S-CRY-ed (TV) So-so I felt like watching an anime where the protagonist develops a power and just gets stronger and stronger throughout the series and in that regard this series was a success. However, the story didn't make much sense and everyone is always trying to achieve their goals by doing the exact opposite of what they should be doing. The characters were also shallow and each could be summed up in a few words. I feel that no matter what an anime is based on, in this case superpowers, it still needs to be well rounded to be a completely entertaining experience.
(The) Sacred Blacksmith (TV) Decent Good basis but the story does not develop, is needlessly confusing, and doesn't even show a complete story. Not to mention the lead character was prone to breaking out into emotional speeches every 5 seconds that I just wanted her to shut up.
Sacred Seven (TV) Decent Pretty generic but if you don't think too much about that it can still be entertaining.
Samurai Champloo (TV) Excellent Really good series. Great characters and some really good mini-archs. But I didn't like the zombie and baseball episodes since they seemed out of place. The ending also seemed rushed with the addition of extra bad guys and a pretty poor conclusion. I don't understand why they all split up in the end since they are all each other has but I'm sure that's just some setup for the sequel.
Sands of Destruction (TV) Weak Poor story, characters, and world. Might as well watch stateside cartoons.
Say "I love you." (TV) Good Pretty basic sorta reminded me of "Kimi ni Todoke" without the humor.
School Days (TV) Excellent This is what would happen if Tomoya from Clannad was a jerk. Makoto deserves what he got, he was never honest with any of the girls or himself...he was so selfish. I truly felt bad for Kotonoha and Sekai.
School Days: Magical Heart Kokoro-chan (OAV) Decent
Sci-Fi Harry (TV) Weak Pretty terrible. I never thought I would find a character more pathetic than Shinji from Eva but Harry takes the cake. This anime had some interesting ideas but in general the story didn't make sense and was boring.
Scrapped Princess (TV) Decent This is like if the Matrix had a love-child with Dungeons and Dragons and everyone wore huge shoulder pads.
Seitokai Yakuindomo (TV) Decent Just a string of dirty joke after dirty joke most of the time barely even connected. Also, most of the jokes were play-on-words which as a non-Japanese speaker were lost on me. So I was never laughing at the jokes just (if I laughed...) the situation because the girls were crazy. However, I liked the way it was presented and I feel the show knew what it was so it wasn't going to try and put up fronts.
Seraph of the End: Vampire Reign (TV) Decent The story is just too anime-y. Its the same rehashed story of two friends who ended up on opposite sides in a war. The protagonist is the same edgy youth quick to violence but follows his moral compass. That's fine but why does it have to be so shallow? How can he join the military but still do whatever he wants? How come everyone seemingly has a magical weapon that was destined for them and yet they all look the same... All these little things add up to the world and setting just being a facade to tell the dame tired story.
Serial Experiments Lain (TV) Weak I watched this anime from start to finish because I heard it was supposed to be awesome and a total mindf*#K...but it turned out to be more of the latter...In the end I didn't really enjoy it all that much.
Shadow Star Narutaru (TV) Weak Pointless. The story went in so many directions that it actually went nowhere.
Shakugan no Shana (TV) Very good
Shakugan no Shana S (OAV) Very good
Shakugan no Shana Second (TV) Excellent
Shakugan no Shana SP: Koi to Onsen no Kōgai Gakushū! (OAV) Good
Shigofumi - Letters from the Departed (TV) Excellent I liked it but the story was pretty bi-polar with a beginning that is all death and suicide reminiscent of "Hell Girl" (well the episodes I've seen) but then it does a 180 and it's all daisuki! daisuki! Anyways, I generally enjoyed it.
Shiki (TV) Good I started watching this when it came out but I had to stop halfway since the feelings of despair it gave me was overwhelming. For nearly all of the series you sit back and watch helplessly as all the characters are being out played and consequently either murdered or turned vampire. And by outplayed I mean they literally do nothing and when some people finally get conclusive proof that the village is being overrun with vampires they do to little to late so it just keeps getting worse and worse. I guess it is an accomplishment that an anime can make you feel this way but it made it hard to watch. Eventually, I had to know how it ended so I reluctantly picked it back up. Looking back on it the slow rising action that takes place after the introduction was pretty unnecessary since it kinda just keeps showing you the same thing over and over again. Basically, you only need to watch the first couple of episodes, know that pretty much everyone is dead/vampired, and then skip to episode 17 when the humans begin to actually start fighting back. But, I totally got what they were trying to show with people not wanting to accept that something strange was going on and I also got how when the people did start brutally attacking the vampires your supposed to be like wow and I thought the vampires were the demons. But after 17 episodes of watching the vampires be total jerk to everyone I wanted to see them all purged.
Shuffle! (TV) Very good As far as ecchi harems go this is pretty good...but its just so darn sexist (but i guess all ecchi harems are)...and I'm no feminist or anything...lol. It's just Rin really doesn't do anything for these girls except show them kindness and they will do anything for him (which is usually making him food because everyone knows girls belong in the kitchen). Maybe I'm being to rough on it since the series is based off a hentai computer simulation...but I was really sad at how he treated Kaede. It's the fatal flaw of every harem story. The main character is never honest with the girls so they never stop trying to win his affection and he just keeps using them until he finally picks the one he wants. But this time it all worked out (even though they all still love him...) unlike in School Days.
Simoun (TV) Good Basically, this anime is just a bunch of girls b*tching nonstop. However, It does slightly improve after episode 8. Besides relationships its "'yuri' content" is based on kissing which seems to occur every five minutes because of some bullsh*t ritual that they have to kiss before they can fly (ahem writing staff...). In my book this is a good thing since if I wanted "that" I would just go watch hentai. Another thing that I didn't like was that there are a ton of Ri Mājons but they all do the same thing pretty much -> make things explode and that's kinda lame. In the end I would recommend this to older lesbians that miss their youthful years.
(The) Sky Crawlers (movie) Decent Weird, not what I was expecting and had a horrible ending.
Sola (TV) Good Not bad but was missing something.
Soul Link (TV) Bad Completely forgettable.
Speed Grapher (TV) Excellent I really enjoyed this series and I don't understand why its never talked about and it received a poor reception. The story line is very original in some aspects and I really liked the characters. How critics can rate this poorly and give the run-of-the-mill moe crap more acclaim I do not know.
Spice and Wolf (TV) Excellent Liked it a lot. Kinda fell in love with Horo a little bit...It's just something about those tsundere types..I wish they actually existed though I bet I wouldn't know how to handle one. lol...Also the fact that Horo has a tail and wolf ears is kinda weird since I'm not into "furry" stuff...but I guess I could let that slide. lol...
Spice and Wolf II (TV) Excellent
Spiral (TV) Not really good I did not like this story. This anime thought itself deep and thought provoking when it was actually shallow, repetitive, and lacking in almost every area.
Spirited Away (movie) Excellent
Star Driver (TV) Very good At first I was like, "what?" with the whole "Galactic Pretty-Boy" stuff but once I got used to the flamboyancy I started to like it. I read somewhere that the GPB stuff is the writers way of creating a male magical girl that isn't too terrible and I think it was a success. I hate magical girl anime but I liked this. One thing I didn't like though was the reuse of the transformation sequence though I guess I can't expect them to reanimate it different 25 times but it got old quick. Another thing I didn't like was that the fight scenes we literally 3 minutes long and were pretty terrible but watchable. the drama was pretty top notch and we diffidently need an OVA to see what happened to the trio now that the this saga is over and Wako can leave the island. Seriously, I'm all for giving the creators credit but an old school credit curtain? seriously? they definitely needed to montage a more robust end in there.
Steins;Gate (TV) Masterpiece This is my favorite anime up to this point. Need I say more...
(La) storia della Arcana Famiglia (TV) Decent This anime has a good base but kinda ruins it with generic characters and pointless story. However, Felicità was pretty sweet, it's too bad they reversed harem'd her such that she will get no one...(cause you know Libertà would win)...
Strain: Strategic Armored Infantry (TV) Decent Not bad but pretty anime-y. It never really tries to be awesome and is just fine with basic anime troupes.
Strike the Blood (TV) Decent Kind of a let down since the premise seemed interesting but it just turned into a generic ecchi harem fest.
Strike Witches (TV) Decent The story was so slow it degenerated into cute girls doing cut things...but golly get these girls some pants...seriously if you were to add all the crotch shots up it would make up a majority of the footage and I don't even get them because they weren't even sexualized they were like here is a girl and now we are going to zoom into this girls crotch for no apparent reason, let it linger for a few seconds, and then move on. I tired of that almost immediately.
Summer Wars (movie) Decent Funny but pretty ridiculous.
Sunday Without God (TV) Good Not bad. It had some interesting and original ideas but was lacking in a central goal so it just turned into a bunch of mini-arcs. The main character has a pretty generic anime personality and looked like a Card Captor Sakura rip-off. Ugh those Moe faces uguhh...I'd watch more though.
Suzuka (TV) Weak I admit I didn't actually finish the whole thing. I actually could only make it to episode 18/26 and I read recaps of the rest. It was just too boring, too cliche, to obvious. The story has been done before, many times, and this series tries in no way to innovate or tell it in a unique way. The characters are boring and uninteresting. Yamato is flaky pr*ck, Suzuka is a b*tch, and Honoka is nice but insecurely annoying. I could have cared less how the story ends since the show is called "Suzuka" that doesn't give it away or anything. One thing that did surprise me was the track and field aspect. I've never (I think) watched a sports or game themed anime cause I assumed it would be boring or get in the way but now I think that only counts for sports I find boring (so no baseball or boxing anime) but as a former track runner I found this aspect interesting. However, it was too bad they don't really focus on it and it was only used as a plot device.
Sword Art Online (TV) Excellent Great anime that really surprised me the direction and pacing of the story. Pleasantly surprised. It's been a while since something this good has come out.
Tales of the Abyss (TV) So-so Surprisingly, I felt this anime was too long and didn't deserve it's 26 episodes. The story is so obvious and its twists are so labored that I was literally waiting 6 episodes for the charters to figure out something that I felt all the viewers already new. This can be done but it should add suspense not make the story drag on forever. Furthermore, the story is needlessly elongated by the fact they need to go here, then there, then back to there, over and over. This is probably an artifact of its video game based story. I probably would have enjoyed it more and liked the characters had I played the game first. But I didn't like any of the characters in this anime. Every single one of them was illogical (I decree that since my daughter is not my blood daughter she must be executed...[fast forward] Never mind that I was being selfish...it's okay I love you dad, Seriously WTF) I just could not follow the thought process of any of these flaky characters.
Tears to Tiara (TV) Decent Pretty generic with really no substance or depth but not absolultely terrible. It's sort of a "Utawarerumono" with even more one dimensional characters and story that makes sense half of the time.
Tegami Bachi: Letter Bee (TV) Excellent Great story, though I wish they found out more about the sun and Lag's mother. Niche is my favorite.
Tegami Bachi: Reverse (TV) Excellent
Terror in Resonance (TV) Good An interesting story but it had a bad case of "Anime Logic." It's like the Rube Goldberg machine of exposing a conspiracy. Gotta love that American hate too.
Texhnolyze (TV) Weak Without even looking I can tell this is the same bright and cheery bunch that brought us Serial Experiments Lain...That said, I did not like, nor enjoy watching this...I know that psychological stories can be hard to understand because of various reasons that are supposed to enrich the story etc etc...but even if you watch this and finally understand whats going on it's not even a good story.
This Ugly Yet Beautiful World (TV) So-so This anime had a somewhat interesting beginning and twist but really it is just a super-watered-down version of the cinematic classic "The 5th Element." But saying that makes this anime sound good which it certainly is not since it doesn't take it's story importantly at all and instead focuses on typical anime teenage angst like hitting the hot springs and the beach and the awkward romance between the main characters. It would be like if Korben Dallas and Leeloo never faced any fighting and instead had a successful pleasure cruise on-board the Phloston Paradise cruise ship and they fell in love. Leeloo never sees any of the travesties in this world so shes not conflicted on whether she should save it or not but just makes the easy decision to save the world so she can stay with the man she loves. You can see how that takes away the main point of the movie which is that humans have done many bad things to one another but there is also a lot worth saving like love thus our world is ugly yet beautiful. I can't help but feel that they wanted to be as deep or deeper than "The 5th Element" but the genre of anime was all off and they just went the boob route instead. Which kind of bothered me since there is fan-service and then there is just nudity and this one had both and I don't get the nudity, it wasn't necessary (even symbolically), and the fact that these girls are high school and younger creeped me out. In, "Elfen Lied," which is the only other anime that I've watched that showed tits (as of now), it kind of made sense because you are supposed to see these killing machines as girls as human and have sympathy for them and maybe the nudity was for that. But even if it wasn't there there was so much blood and violence that it was obviously made for adults so who cares if there is some boobage? On the other hand, "This Ugly Yet Beautiful World" was your standard slice of life abominated by fantasy themes so I can't see why they weren't satisfied with normal fan-service.
Time of Eve (ONA) Excellent Amazing story that we have only got to see the cusp of with any luck more will be made.
Tokyo ESP (TV) Decent At first I really liked it because it throws you right into the action at the beginning. However, it wasn't able to maintain that momentum for long. Then the little things just started to accumulate that diminished the story. Like if your going to give people ESP powers why also make them unnaturally strong or acrobatic (even when they don't have powers). Creating your own world with it's own rules is fine, even great, but you need make sure your characters obey the rules you lay out or the world just makes no sense. Another thing, what was with the really racist Chinese scene? I understand Japan and China aren't the best of friends but it was a pretty uncomfortable.
Tokyo Ghoul (TV) Decent Decent but ends before it gets anywhere at all.
Tokyo Ghoul √A (TV) Decent Not as good as the first part. It just doesn't go anywhere interesting.
Tokyo Majin (TV) So-so Boring and shallow in story.
Tokyo Ravens (TV) Decent Generic and filled with cliche but not a total waste. Some of the characters are interesting and the story isn't too bad though lacking.
Toradora! (TV) Excellent Great series with interesting characters though they all seemed to be a little exaggerated.
Toward the Terra (TV) Masterpiece Great anime. Interesting story and characters and it's pretty original in that I never would have expected the story to unfold the way it did. It did however suffer from anime nonsensical actions but it's not anime without them is it?
(The) Tower of Druaga: The Aegis of Uruk (TV) Decent Son-of-a-b*tch, I thought I was watching this but I was really watching the sequel. After, watching seven episodes of “Sword of Uruk” and absolutely hating it because I didn’t understand what was going on I realized that I was watching the wrong one. Jeeze, why did they name them so similar? So then I started “Aegis of Uruk” and it was a lot better because it cleared up all the questions I had but I spoiled the ending which wasn’t much fun. In the end the story was subpar with little making any sense and the characters are so shallow they just repeat the same mantra over and over again. Lastly, the series end on a cliffhanger which is lame but of course I already know there is a sequel.
(The) Tower of Druaga: the Sword of Uruk (TV) Good Pretty good finish for what the first series started. However, the story was pretty contrived with the shadow king thing, the whole now that you've reached the top of the tower...there's another tower...and also the fact that the tower was a weapon. It seems like a pretty messed up system to have in place. Another thing that was super lame was that Neeba's sole reason for being evil was because he was jealous of his brother Jil. I'm so mad at my brother (for no specific reason shown) I'm going to betray everyone and try to kill God... that's such an anime thing to do.
(The) Troubled Life of Miss Kotoura (TV) Good The drama was forced but the comedy made me laugh.
True Tears (TV) So-so It tries to be deep with chicken metaphors and random poetic statements but it's not deep it's just a bunch of people getting into relationships with the wrong person for the wrong reasons. It gets pretty convoluted and you need to make a diagram to make sense of who likes who but is stuck with who. What makes it horrible is that these characters have very few redeeming qualities and only seem to be truthful when they have already tried everything else. I almost thought it was going to turn into School Days, too bad because perhaps that type of ending may have been better. Sadly, this anime left me feeling bummed.
(The) Twelve Kingdoms (TV) Masterpiece Great series with a world so big and interesting 45 episodes wasn't enough to cover it. I really liked the character development. Basically, many of the main characters start off as horrible people so much so that its painful to watch but eventually they become people you can look up to and in retrospect you see that their earlier failings are what made them stronger. If you think about it, it is really hard to do this in any meaningful way when writing a script yet this series does it exquisitely multiple times.
Umineko - When They Cry (TV) Good Interesting story but it's just too abstract. Their world is so crazy that anythings possible so it's hard to grasp what the h*lls going on. At some points I loved it and at others I wondered why I was even watching it. When I finally got to the end I was let down because there is literally no end...
Un-Go (TV) Good I liked the characters but the story was a little lacking since nothing was very concrete. For instance if you ask Shinjuurou why he solves crimes and he'll say something poetic like to make people's souls beautiful... but how does that pay the bills...what is really the point? At the end of the day the viewer can strip all that jazz away and see the nitty-gritty and when you do there's nothing all that special going on. This anime is going for deepness in artistic sense but not in the details and for me details are what make an anime transcend "cartoons." Lastly, the mysteries weren't all that hard to figure out but I can't hold that against it since I'm convinced It's impossible to create a good mystery in 20 minutes while setting the scene and characters without giving up the culprit. In that regard it follows the mystery anime tried-and-true method of making up stupid plot devices (Artificial Intelligence, superpowers, etc) to make it new while keeping the twists flowing so that you have no choice but to solve it with the detective. Overall It was pretty good and I'd watch more.
Unbreakable Machine-Doll (TV) Decent This is pretty much a copy of "Dragon Crisis" with magical robots instead of dragon girls. However, this time around I found the pandering to be excessive.
Unlimited Psychic Squad (TV) Decent Nothing special. Sort of a rip-off of X-men.
Utawarerumono (TV) Excellent Good anime with interesting characters and a pretty good twist. But it was missing something, the story was a little rushed in places, and the ending was pretty meh. This anime also suffers from the disease of villains that are so ruthless and evil that they are totally unrealistic and unrepeatable, you can't help but want to see them destroyed and of course they will be eventually by the "defenders of justice."
Utawarerumono: The False Faces (TV) So-so It had been so long since the earlier series that I forgot what had happened. Bit since this wasn't a sequel I can review it on its own merits. Sadly, I didn't like it all that much because not much occurred and sort of just fell into a typical fantasy harem of cute girls doing cute things. By now I've come to grips with anime's love of cute girls just acting so darn cute and doing the cutest things but please at least try to develop a story that has an actual purpose.
Valkyria Chronicles (TV) Excellent Amazing anime. Solid story with the trials of war and the travesties of subjugation a vulnerable class with a touch mysterious fantasy. Interesting characters such as Alicia whose moe-ness adds a little spice to the mix but isn't over the top. Also the death of Isara choked me up a bit as they really picked the perfect person to kill off to affect the characters as well as the viewers.
Valvrave the Liberator (TV) Very good See second season for comment.
Valvrave the Liberator (TV 2) Very good Sometimes you just need to watch giant robots fight in space. This anime has that and more; an interesting story and good character designs that actually have some growth for example. However, it definitely has its flaws, anime logic everywhere, and a pretty lackluster ending.
Vampire Hunter D (OAV) Decent Not bad for an 80's movie. The dubbing was pretty poor though.
Vampire Knight (TV) Excellent I wanted something dark...and it had some of that...in the end I really enjoyed it and I hope they make a third season.
Vampire Knight Guilty (TV) Excellent
Vandread (TV) So-so Typical anime junk. This anime is anime and nothing more. Take a somewhat interesting idea, gives it enough back story to be legible but not enough to make complete sense, throw in a weak protagonist whose character is as deep as just being a jerk then give him infinite power. Add in women for the boobs and illogical actions and some senseless bad guys so there is something to fight but never any real danger. Lastly, distract viewers from all the flaws and holes with hi-jinks, super-powered fight scenes, uncomfortable blushing, and other junk. Personally, I prefer anime that take a more serious approach and are not hindered in story and depth by the fact they are animated. The thing that brought me to anime was that the stories are unlike anything that is comparable to live action shows because through animation anything is possible. After watching several series like the ones described above I feel I may have watched all there is that fits my preference and with the direction anime is going there will not be anything for me in the future.
Vandread: The Second Stage (TV) Decent Better than the first season but still nothing special.
Vexille - 2077 Isolation of Japan (movie) Decent A pretty interesting sci-fi movie but like all anime movies it was way too rushed.
(The) Vision of Escaflowne (TV) Very good
Waiting in the Summer (TV) Very good A little boring at times with the concentration on love that takes forever to be brought out in the open. But the idea, though not totally original, was interesting and the characters were well done especially Remon. It has the same end as every love triangle anime though with few actually together but all happy that they could finally get their feelings out...
WATAMOTE (TV) Decent I liked it and found it funny at first but she never improved so it just started to get sad and repetitive.
We Without Wings - Under the Innocent Sky (TV) Decent This show had some great ideas but the execution was way off. If they wanted to make a generic ecchi harem they could have done that a million easier ways but instead they tried to insert a dramatic story and blast it with ecchi and hope for some deeper understanding. They then neglected the story since they never cared about it to begin with as they were to busy rushing to fill their panty shot quota. For example, the pacing was way off with a lot of time wasted reaffirming the same things (these girls are kawaii!) and not enough detail was given to the ending, resolution of the protagonist illness, and the dynamic of the personalities and their corresponding girl. Each girls revelation of the multiple personalities should have been shown in a more dramatic way and the fact that none of them really cared showed how much depth they actually had. This could have been a really good one but I think to much ecchii got in the way, but hey whatever sells I guess...
Welcome to the NHK (TV) Excellent A humorous yet uplifting story that is a must watch for any discouraged NEET, hikikomori, overly-obsessed otaku, online gaming shut-in, or a person contemplating suicide.
When Supernatural Battles Became Commonplace (TV) Very good A refreshing story. I hope it develops more and focuses on the war in the background.
When They Cry - Higurashi (TV) Excellent Watching the first few episodes I was really into it but I didn't know it was broken into chapters that repeat so imagine my surprise when everyone dies in one episode but in the next it starts totally over. Once I got used to that I enjoyed it even more and really liked trying to put the whole picture together.
When They Cry - Kai (TV) Excellent Once I got over how ridiculous of an explanation this season was for the first one I really enjoyed it. It was awesome. I was so pumped for all the characters getting their happy ending, finally! My one quip is that these kids went up against a mini army without touching (excluding Shion cause I guess shes the only bad*ss) a gun. It was like "Home Alone"...Oh no what do we do these bad guys want to kill us?...I know we'll set up ridiculous traps...Great idea! But seriously, this is one of my all time favorite animes.
When They Cry - Rei (OAV) Excellent At first I was really upset that all the work the characters went through was erased but I really like how it turned out. My only problem is why was it so short? they definitely could have made it a whole season instead of an OVA...I want more!
Witch Hunter Robin (TV) Good Pretty good series but the story progresses really slowly and as most anime stories go it was highly illogical. Why do characters that are bad but you don't know it take so long to show there true colors when in the end they don't try to hide it all? If any of the organizations were serious they would have just wiped out the others instead of playing it safe. I just get the feeling that this series could have been much better if the story was smoother.
Wolf's Rain (TV) Excellent I really good anime but admittedly I didn't like it as much as I should have. I like long anime but this story was like a roller coaster that appeared like it was going to end 5 times but every time it would just reset and with each reset I found myself getting less and less interested. Furthermore, the story could have used a bit more explanation, it had a just enough so that you know whats going on but not enough to know why. Also, what was with the four recap episodes? I understand one in the middle to bridge a hiatus or something but four? that seemed unnecessary even if they were narrated differently.
(The) World God Only Knows (TV) Very good An interesting take on the harem genre. I liked that Keima wasn't a wimp and rose up to the challenge even though it seemed out of his league. But Keima is actually the man and could really get these girls if he wanted too but he doesn't he would rather play his dating-sims instead. Which I'm sure a lot of the audience who are similarly addicted to sims found this to be a ray of hope. But sadly I doubt that's the case for most. However, this anime is sort of a self help for those in that situation that shows them in a media that they are familiar with that maybe they can talk to and date real girls too and all the fake interaction they have racked up in sims can be put to use once they strip away the anime banalities. I hope in the second season Keima will realize that he likes real girls better then sims but I doubt it will take such a serious route.
(The) World God Only Knows Season Two (TV) Very good Very good, I'm a big fan of this series. I didn't think this season was as good as the first but it was had a lot to offer. As I watched this season though I saw how alone Keima really is and that made me sad because the series needs to keep milking him in order to keep going so he will never find his happiness. I could never imagine working so hard to win a girl over, getting her and then losing her in an instant. At first I thought since he was so into games and 2D that he just liked the thrill since it was like bridging games into reality but you can tell its starting wear on him. I haven't read the source material so I can only speculate but I'm hoping that eventually Keima will have to rescue his ideal girl from a loose soul and fall in love in the process, then refuse to give her up after he saves her. His love will break his demon contract and then he will win her over again. I've been thinking this over Keima-style and this is the only ending that would work since Elsie is definitely not his type. Anyways...I hope they keep this anime coming.
(The) World God Only Knows: Goddesses Arc (TV) Good A good addition to one of my favorite series. It tried to shake it up a bit with the introduction of an enemy but since this series isn't about action or suspense it didn't really add all that much. Instead it just put a needless sense of urgency on the whole chapter causing them to rush so much that they didn't have time to give it the full ending it deserved. They didn't even explain what happened to the goddesses or tell if all the girls still remember what happened. Facts like these would really influence where the story can go next. However, this one fel
Xam'd: Lost Memories (ONA) So-so The characters were interesting but the story didn't make any sense to me.
xxxHOLiC (TV) Decent Interesting story ideas but I found Watanuki to be so annoying that it was discouraging to watch. Also I didn't really like the drawing style because often the characters were extremely lanky or had tiny heads on huge bodies (though intentional). Another thing I didn't like was that ultimately there was no main story rather there was a new struggle every episode. I don't really like that because in the grand scheme of things nothing actually changed from the first episode to the last. There is a sequel, an OVA, and a movie to follow but I don't know if I'll ever get around to them.
Yona of the Dawn (TV) Reminded me a little of "12 Kingdoms" only it was no where as good (at all). Besides reason for the initial betrayal the story was very predictable with a checklist like feel. I know that it is shojo and has a male harem for obvious reason but all the characters seem so boring as they all are strong, handsome men, whom fulfill some sort of tored archetype and will do whatever Yona says. (snore...) However, now that Yona has brought together all her dragons it will be interesting to see what she does next.
Yosuga no Sora - In solitude where we are least alone (TV) So-so With the addition of nudity, sexual content, and an incestuous relationship I thought this series would be more edgy but all the girls problems were just rehashed and very mild. The series just felt tired and bland. However, the "Choose Your Own Adventure" book style is an interesting way to do a harem anime that is close to their dating-sim roots. It was a step in the right direction but I think it could have been done better such that you could see the decisions Haruka made that changed his path rather than external factors changing it for him like someone appearing where they weren't before. For example Akira and Kazuha should always take the same amount of time in the changing room and if he doesn't hide he will always be caught by that adult.
Yozakura Quartet ~Hana no Uta~ (TV) Weak Maybe I'm being pretty harsh since it really wasn't that bad. It just wasn't good either. Too many side characters, not enough actual story, the world has no logical frame work so they can just make up things as they go, it doesn't tell a complete story, and anime logic everywhere.
Zetman (TV) Weak Not really my thing. It was like a comic book with a pointless story and crippling anime logic.
Zoids (TV) Good Probably the first anime I ever watched...I didn't even know what anime was back then...
Zombie-Loan (TV) Weak Interesting idea, poor execution. The story was boring, the characters were annoying and always yelling, random side characters would come in and out and the bad guys weren't even truly divulged or fought. It just seemed like they tried to cram so much into 11 (+2) episodes that ultimately it failed in all respects.
